NOSKE LOGISTICS TAKES DELIVERY OF THEIR FIRST MANS Tony Noske and General Manager Jayden Tonkin, of Noske Logistics, pictured here with MAN Regional Sales Manager Don Meluccy and Sales Consultant Tony Lamanna, are accepting delivery of the first three of their initial order for five MAN TGS 26.540 6x4 prime movers. 02

Noske Logistics, founded by Tony Noske in 2004, specialises in the bulk haulage of wood chip, grain and fertilisers throughout Victoria via its two depots in Geelong and Portland. Tony Noske’s had a long term friendship with Roger Penske, Chairman of Penske Commercial Group since meeting Roger at the Indianapolis race track in 1975. Last year Penske Commercial Vehicles (PCV) became the importer and distributor of MAN Trucks in Australia and it was Roger Penske who personally recommended that Tony consider MAN for his particular needs. The high powered 540 Hp MANs will be based in Geelong and used specifically for short haul ‘ship-to-shore’ work from the Geelong port into the surrounding Victorian countryside, along with occasional trips as far north as Mildura, towing both single and B-Double trailers. Although early days, Jayden reports that the MANs are performing extremely well and living up to high expectations in terms of comfort, reliability and the all important fuel efficiency.

PERSONALISED SERVICE THE KEY TO G’DAY TRANSPORT’S SUCCESS

Graeme Day has spent a mighty 33 years in the transport business, initially as a courier with Regal Transport for several years driving early model 1 tonne taxi trucks.

04

For the past 26 years, Graeme’s company G’Day Transport’s main area of business is the transportation and delivery of laboratory equipment, chemicals and medical & hospital supplies to and from distributors to end users such as food processing companies, hospitals, universities and research laboratories.

The loads may include many items used to test and manufacture foodstuffs, such as fine grade chemicals, petrie dishes, specimen jars and the like. “I started off working with a pharmaceuticals company, Merck, doing a lot of work for them and then gained

“I learnt it was important to my business building strategy to specialise in one area of industry, so I made sure the business kept expanding within the same sector,” Graeme went on to say. It has proven to be a successful strategy as Graeme’s clients are interlinked; for instance he has pick ups and deliveries to and from many of the same clients every day, and on to other related clients. He also picks up and delivers from all the major hospitals every day which means his delivery systems can be streamlined, adding to driver and company efficiencies. G’Day’s client relationships are important and the company’s customers are able to rely on personalised service. Because of the ongoing daily work, Graeme and his drivers are familiar with and have come to understand and anticipate their clients’ needs. In addition, Graeme will go out of his way to make sure that he can respond to any unusual or unexpected requests outside of the regular day to day routine. The majority of the work is for packages less than 10kg, but G’Day has the capability to do heavier weight materials and pallets if required. The bulk of the work is in Melbourne Metro and sometimes Geelong. G’Day is currently running four Isuzu vehicles and a 1 tonne van. Graeme purchased his first 1 tonner 33 years ago from Dealer Principal Terry Jewson who was a junior salesperson at the time. The relationship has grown and strengthened since then. Graeme has bought a new vehicle most years ever since then and at one point was running up to eight Isuzus. “They’ve always been good to me,” enthused Graeme about the Patterson Cheney team. “I’ve dealt with Terry and Paul Leggerini for over thirty years. Whenever I have been looking for a new vehicle I would look around but always go to them and they would look after my needs. The last 10 trucks – I haven’t even bothered going

anywhere else – I just let them know that I am on the market for one soon.” Over the years Graeme has purchased 27 Isuzus. He purchased his latest Isuzu NQR just a few months ago. “My city driver loves the new AMT – it makes it so easy for him to get around doing lots of drop offs and pickups in tight spaces and heavy traffic. Another two of my drivers much prefer manuals, which was a bit of a surprise but in fact so do I!” laughed Graeme. The reliability of the Isuzus has kept Graeme going back for more as he has had so few problems or breakdowns over millions of kilometres. Patterson Cheney also takes care of the servicing requirement of Graeme’s new vehicles and he speaks highly of the excellent service he receives.

“I know that when I need something done, the guys at Patterson Cheney understand I need to get the vehicles back pronto because of my regular workload, and they always come up with the goods” offered Graeme. Graeme was keen to add that Patterson Cheney also know to keep him aware on an ongoing basis of upcoming events such as stock runouts, new models etc so he can keep up to date with any happenings. “As long as I keep getting good service out of them I won’t change. My drivers always stay with me for quite a few years and so do my trucks. It’s a family business and I like to deal with Patterson Cheney as they know the vehicles and my needs well.” CONTACT: Graeme Day T: 0412 399 047 E: gdaytran@tpg.com.au

more and more work from their supply chain of distributors to laboratories within the medical and food industries. All food industry businesses that develop and manufacture new products have research laboratories,” said Graeme.

ROCKBROOK TAKE DELIVERY OF FIRST CUMMINS ISXe5 WESTERN STAR ROCKBROOK HAS RECENTLY TAKEN DELIVERY OF A NEW 4864 FXB WESTERN STAR POWERED BY CUMMINS’ LATEST ENGINE, THE ISXe5 . THIS NEW CUMMINS MEETS EURO 5 EMISSIONS COMPLIANCE THROUGH SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) TECHNOLOGY. 06

“ The power from the 550hp motor is great and my driver is rapt in it – basically I’m just really happy with it.” Rockbrook is the name of both the farm and transport company owned by the Bucknall family, based just outside Avoca. It is managed on a daily basis by Ian Bucknall and his sons John and Hugh. The decision to enter into the transport market was taken a few years ago to better facilitate the transport of Rockbrook’s own grain, lime and gypsum together with sub-contracting for other farmers and businesses in the area. Today the sub-contract component of the business accounts for around 80% of the turnover with a busy schedule that includes regular daily runs to Geelong and Melbourne ports. John Bucknall’s positive experience with his first Western Star, along with his driver’s preference for the brand encouraged him to look again at Western Star when the decision was made to purchase a new truck. John had a key preference for Cummins engines and was primarily interested in

purchasing one with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. So the recent introduction of the new ISXe5 engine was perfect timing.

developed by Cummins Emissions Solutions (CES), dosing urea into the exhaust stream to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions.

The ISXe5 has the same base engine design as the current Cummins EGR engines but incorporates a new common rail fuel system, a wastegate turbocharger and a single overhead camshaft.

John dealt with Ryan Hardiman at Westar Truck Centre. “Ryan made the entire purchase process a pleasure, it all went really smoothly and overall Westar did a great job,” John said.

The XPI (extreme high pressure) common rail fuel system provides very precise injection and combustion control. It operates independently of engine speed and provides injection pressures greater than 30,000 psi. As the only diesel engine manufacturer with in-house integration of all critical subsystems from air handling to exhaust after treatment, Cummins is able to optimise the combustion process to maximise fuel economy. The SCR exhaust after treatment on the ISXe5 is a fully integrated system

“Ryan then did an outstanding job setting the truck up and making sure everything was spot on for us; it looks awesome with all the extra chrome we specified,” John went on to say. “The Stratosphere sleeper cab is also terrific - you can easily stand up and walk around, which is a really good feature for our driver,” John added. “After living with the Star for month I couldn’t complain at all. The power from the 550hp motor is great and my driver is rapt in it – basically I’m just really happy with it,” John summed up.

GENNADY KUPERMAN’S INTRODUCTION TO AUSTRALIA IN 1989 HAD AN INTERESTING TWIST WHEN HE WAS WORKING AS A COURIER WITH A 1 TONNE UTE AND WAS ASKED TO DO AN INTERVIEW ABOUT HIS WORKING LIFE BY WELL KNOWN INDUSTRY MAGAZINE, OWNER DRIVER. ALTHOUGH HE HAD LIMITED ENGLISH HE FELT IT WAS A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE AND IT PROPELLED HIM TO WORK HARDER AND GROW HIS BUSINESS. 08

Gennady graduated from 1 tonne ute courier work to purchasing a semi trailer and continued to subcontract for several years, taking on additional drivers and undertaking a variety of local and long haul work. After being involved in an accident with a wayward kangaroo at Wagga Wagga, Gennady decided to work closer to home for a while. He purchased another truck and started transporting containers to and from the wharves. It was then that he spotted a niche in the market. Most empty containers were being taken back to a container yard after being unloaded and then had to be re-transported back to the wharf. Gennady made the decision to approach shipping companies with a view to returning the empty containers direct to the wharf for them to be reloaded back on to the ships and on to their country of origin. In 2008 Gennady formed a partnership with Mark Alexander who had many contacts in the shipping industry and they continued to build the business – today they handle around 80% of the Melbourne empty container business.

SPOTTING A NICHE MARKET PAYS OFF FOR KUPERMAN AND PARTNERS

More recently they have expanded into the Sydney market and are now in the process of progressing the business to the Brisbane arena with another partner. They have also expanded the business to full containers, such is their good relationship with large shipping firms such as Maersk. The first MAN Gennady purchased from Westar was a TGM which was specially made to his specifications – a TGM 12.250 4x2 prime mover. As his business flourished, Gennady kept purchasing more MANs, primarily due to the quality and reliability of the trucks coupled with another major drawcard the long service intervals. He now runs a fleet of 7 MANs – predominantly the larger TGS models in both 4x2 and 6x4 configuration. “I can attract the best drivers with these trucks” stated Gennady. “They can come with their white gloves on and stay clean, the interiors are so clean and comfortable! They are the Rolls Royce of trucks with the quality European styling,” he added. “The long service intervals is a major advantage of the MANs because we

have a lot of business and we need to keep them working,” Gennady went on to say. Gennady has dealt with Sales Consultant Johan Middag at Westar Derrimut who has been instrumental in making the purchase of Gennady’s vehicles a positive experience. He is also quick to compliment the service staff at Westar. “All the service staff are good people – they know our trucks and are very helpful. Service technician Kevin Ramage has been particularly good. Our company is growing and I know we will be doing more business with Westar in the future,” Gennady summed up. From spotting a niche in the market, Kuperman and Partners sees a bright future further developing their business and their ongoing relationships with MAN and Westar. ISUZU D-MAX Volume 4 Issue 3

RESALE VALUE A KEY REASON FOR BUDGET’S PURCHASE OF MORE ISUZU D-MAX UTES FRANKSTON/DANDENONG BUDGET FRANCHISEE PHIL MOLONEY HAS RECENTLY TAKEN DELIVERY OF MORE OF THE LATEST GENERATION ISUZU D-MAXS DUE TO THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES THAT THEIR CUSTOMERS’ HAVE HAD WITH THE PREVIOUS MODEL. “Customer satisfaction, along with ‘whole of life’ costs is key to whether we re-order the same model again, and that’s where the D-MAX has excelled,” said Phil. “In particular, the resale value of the D-Max has been very good” added Phil, “and coupled with excellent feedback from customers in terms of driver comfort, safety and performance it made the decision pretty easy,” he went on to say. All D-MAX models come equipped with a host of safety benefits, including 4-channel 4-sensor Anti-skid Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Brake Assist (BA), along with six (6) airbags (dual front, curtain and side). Budget’s D-Maxs are predominantly 4x4 Crew Cab models along with a few cab chassis, in both auto and manual to allow for customer preferences. All are fitted with tow bars to take advantage of D-Max’s 3 tonne braked towing capacity and tub liners to protect the tubs – another important factor in maximising resale value.

The well proven fuel efficient 3.0 litre turbo common rail diesel engine generates 130kW and a peak torque output of 380Nm at 1800rpm. The torque is delivered across a flat curve through a large part of the rev-range to aid drivability and makes for relaxed towing.

“Downtime is something we obviously take very seriously and work to minimise. On that front our service guys are also advocates for the D-MAX’s reliability - by virtue of the fact they don’t seem to see them in the workshop much at all!” Phil added.

Phil has been a long term customer of Patterson Cheney due to the excellent service he receives – particularly in relation to the delivery of new vehicles.

Budget tends to keep the Utes for around three years prior to resale. As with the previous models, the new D-MAX’s class leading 5 year/130,000km warranty will no doubt add to the vehicles’ resale value when Phil trades them in next time.

“It’s important the vehicles are delivered to us without problems, and this is where Patterson Cheney does a very good job. They make sure that when the product is delivered it is to our specifications. This avoids any unnecessary timewasting.” Phil said.

CONTACT: Phil Moloney T: 0418 582 597 E: pmoloney@budgetvic.com.au

The Utes are hired out to a variety of customers on both short and long term rentals which could involve anything from a 24 hour house move, a need for a 4x4 vehicle, contractors on short term hires right through to a 12 month job contract. D-Max’s 3.0 turbo charged diesel engine also received a lot of praise from customers – particularly in relation to its class leading fuel economy and overall performance. 11

MAINTENANCE TIPS

BATTERIES: Your battery is the electrical source for your vehicle so it pays to keep it in good condition.

In cold climates a low battery will freeze and be worthless in the future. One bad battery can spoil the remaining batteries; test your batteries to find a weak or bad cell battery. If age and cold cranking amps are within specs, replace the one bad battery only.

Keep your battery cases clean and ensure all connections are clean and tight. Have your batteries tested every year. If you have a truck that may be sitting stationary for a period of time, unhook the battery cables or install a quick disconnect and shut them off to prevent time drain.

If the battery is three to four years old and the CCA’s are a few hundred lower than original you may want to replace all batteries. Check the terminal lugs or clamps for corrosion and if they appear to be affected, cut them out and install new ones. Check the cables for soft spots, rubbed cases,

18

and corrosion and replace any questionable cables and loops. Make sure the batteries are tied down and feel secure to touch. When it comes to choosing a battery, ensure you select one that is in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended specifications and suitable for your specific needs. How long a battery lasts depends on the outside temperature where it is used, and how well it’s maintained. So remember, look after your battery and it will look after you.
