Vicar’s letter

As I write this article, it’s hard to believe that we’re approaching a year since covid 19 changed our world! As I reflect over this time and how it has changed me, I wonder if you might be doing the same? I would like to think that I have become more creative in how I use my time, talents, and abilities. I’ve become more flexible in how I use my time and have appreciated the interruptions in my day - the surprise knock at the door, text, telephone call or facetime. I have also learned to achieve real connection with others – the quality and depth of conversation has changed, and I am much more present with people. I hope that I am a better listener and less me-centric and seize the small moments to celebrate and see them as priceless. What have become important are the shared moments, with family, friends, church and wider community. In the words of Geraldine Granger (The Vicar of Dibley): “Life goes on and this will pass…We shouldn’t dwell too much on the sadness. Try and think about all the happiness… Lockdown gives us the opportunity to read that book we’ve always been meaning to read (holding up the Bible) … The message of Easter (which we will be celebrating next month) is that things can get really very bad indeed, the crucifixion was very bad, but like Jesus we will rise again from it stronger than ever…The more you read the New Testament what comes through is that we must all be gentle and kind. For as Jesus says in the Beatitudes, ‘blessed are the peacemakers…’ “Be safe, be kind, eat chocolate, praise the Lord and the NHS!” The wounds of the past year will take time to heal but I think we have learned new ways to be there for one another and maybe we have become our best selves. God Bless, Rev Nat BBC iPlayer - The Vicar of Dibley - In Lockdown: Compilation https://youtu.be/En58VidqeS8

All Saints’ Church The church building remains closed but the church community is very much alive! The services will continue to be recorded each week and can be accessed via our YouTube channel – All The Saints Online Church – go to playlists, Sunday services. Before Christmas we made a short film of good news stories from our church. If you haven’t seen it on the youtube channel, please do watch it. If you can’t access youtube and please contact me and we’ll try and get a copy to you on DVD instead. Rev Nat will continue to send out the service booklets. The zoom coffee time will take place each Sunday at 11.30am. This is a really good time to connect with others from across the 3 churches, so please do give it a go. This has been a really valuable support for many, and it would be good to see more people joining in. You do not need the internet to join in and can join in on the phone. Please ask Rev Nat for the phone number or the zoom link. The Mid-week Communion service will take place on Wednesdays at 7pm via zoom. Please let Rev Nat know if you would like to join and she will send you the link. You can access this via phone as well. If you are affected in anyway by the current lockdown, needing practical help or someone to talk to, please give Rev Nat a call 01788 890298.

Parish Nurse

Hello, Maggie here again, your parish nurse. It has been lovely to hear from some of you over this past month. Unfortunately at the moment I’m still not able to do any visits, however I’m still available to support you in any way I can, and If I can’t, I will try my best to put you in touch with someone who can help you. Even if you just want a chat, please call. I’ve been thinking a lot about children and young people lately and how the pandemic has impacted their lives, particularly as it was Children’s Mental Health Week 1st to 7th February 2021. Nearly every area of their lives has been impacted, their family life, education, their social life and ultimately this will have a bearing on their health both physically and mentally. This in turn has had a massive impact on parents and teachers. The Place2Be’s website has really helpful resources for schools, youth groups, parents and carers and of course children and young people themselves. They published new research on ‘parents’ attitudes to mental health’. It was interesting that in a survey of over 1000 parents, they found that almost a third of parents are embarrassed to seek mental health support for their children and feel other parents would judge them. They shared blogs from children and experts, including from Stephen Scott a Professor of Child Health and Behaviour at King’s College where he gave advice for parents and carers. https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/news/how-parents-andcarers-can-support-childrens-mental-health-and-wellbeing/. I hope this may be of interest to some of you.

Not forgetting those less agile, I’ve also included a link to the ‘Move it or Lose it’ site below with resources to help support keep fit & healthy during these strange times. I completed this course in December, so I am now fully qualified to teach you these exercises in your home. We can hopefully manage to have some fun in a group in the near future when safe to do so. Meanwhile we can do them at home together when I am able to visit. If any of you do not have access to the internet, it is possible to receive DVDs. Contact me if interested. https://www.icloud.com/notes/0LgSXtmzF5d9QJN1QHtO98qg#COVID_support_pack_updated_Oct_2020 https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/get-up-and-go/id1470505716 Look forward to hearing from you and seeing you as soon as possible. Food Share Many thanks to all those who have donated so generously to the Food Share. The Food Share remains busy and we have seen an increase in those now using it. Please do keep your donations coming, they really do make a huge difference and helps us to support as many people as we can at this very difficult time.

Braunston to Daventry cycleway The plans from Middlemore to the Canal are now available on the DDC website. Handrail Welton Road We have received a request to install a handrail on the final set of steps along the Welton Road. A quote has been obtained of £1,258.80. A letter is being sent to Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) because of safety issues with the steps. Parking on verges Concerns have been raised about damage to verges in Archer Avenue. A letter is being sent to NCC to request repair to the verges. It was noted this is also a problem in other parts of the village. We ask that people try not to park on the verges and to consider applying for the installation of driveways where this is feasible. Canal and River Trust property This item was on the agenda as there has been a lot of conjecture about the Stop House. The Parish Council have asked that the Canal and River Trust keep us informed.

Braunston C of E School January is now a very distant memory. With the arrival of spring, we are hoping to see new life start to flourish around us and with that, the return to school for all of those children who we have missed so much. Currently, we still continue to operate our school during this global pandemic. By operating, we refer to the obvious elements of teaching and learning. However, as you already know, teaching ‘live’ means not only face to face in person, but also face to face virtually. Our provision has continued to be refined and with parental input and thoughts through consultation, we have altered the timings for our learning sessions. Additionally, we check in with our school community regularly to make sure that there is food on that table at home, no-one goes hungry and that if anyone needs to talk we are here to listen, support and signpost. The Church continues to work closely with our school families to make sure that everyone is supported. Our pastoral lead, Mrs Becky Craig has gained an additional qualification and is now officially our school ‘Mental Health Champion’, which further extends the invaluable support that school is able to offer. We worked with a willow expert (Chaz) to create a 3 metre length living tunnel (picture left) which, through coppicing, will allow our Forest School to create tools and resources for activities.

.

12

Through the generosity of you, our local community, we have been able to support those families where a device is not accessible. We have loaned out and even given devices to our families to allow all children equal access to learning opportunities, as we, as a school, continue to strive to do the very best for the children in our care making sure that no -one is left behind due to financial constraints during these turbulent and unsettled times. Your daily exercise route may take you by Braunston School and you may notice the love and kindness reaching out to you (our community) on the front fence (see picture). The School is sending wishes to you on different coloured hearts and we have put them up so that you can look, read them and know that you are loved and valued by school. We would love for you to add to our wall of hearts with your messages of love and kindness to brighten everyone’s day. Feel free to add your own.

un

Sending best wishes from the school to our local community. Take care.

Lost Elves found in Braunston!

If you noticed some ‘lost Elves’ scattered around Braunston you were not alone. Over 25 Braunston households including young & old braved the cold to search for them as part of Braunston Heart Elf and Treasure Hunt, some much needed post-Christmas lockdown fun and games. Competitors sought answers to 50 clues as well as the 10 Elves to record their names and what they had in common (dogs). Well done to all taking part we hope it provided some much needed fun. Congratulations to the following prize winners.

Trees are not just for the Birds By Tony Renshaw, Braunston CAN (Climate Action Network) In their response to the threat of Climate Change both Braunston Parish Council and Daventry District Council have objectives to increase tree cover in their areas, thus aiding the Government's aim of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emission by 2050. But why trees? Trees are the most effective carbon capture machines on the planet. Throughout their life they suck the main greenhouse gas CO2 out of the atmosphere and lock this in their leaves, trunk, branches and roots to such an extent that 50% of dry wood is carbon. Major additional tree planting is now recognised throughout the world as a simple, cheap and safe tool for mitigating the effects of the climate crisis we face. This is illustrated by the world leaders' pledge at their meeting in Davos, Switzerland, to plant at least one billion trees worldwide over the next decade. The UK Government has plans to increase tree coverage from 13% to 19% by 2030.To aid this programme it is offering grants for large numbers of trees. Smaller batches can be obtained from the Woodland Trust; Jetty Field has taken advantage of this to plant over 200 saplings for hedging in the last two years, and is planning to plant a further 100 this spring. The Parish Council is not a large landowner and Braunston CAN is seeking to identify where additional trees can be planted. It has also explored the requirements of some of the grant giving bodies. Recently we were offered at short notice a quantity of free saplings but could not take advantage of the offer as we had nowhere organised to plant before spring. If you have land, no matter how small an area, where trees could be planted, please let us know. We intend to compile a register of locations before the next autumn/winter planting season and hope where we can to provide assistance in applying for saplings. A recent article shows what can be done. Search for ‘the guardian digging in a million trees’. If you are interested in joining Braunston CAN, please message 07989 421836 or 07554 264742. 19

The Alternative Book Club – Easter Fun! We are holding two activities at Easter, entry is free and you are all invited to take part. One is an Easter egg decorating competition and there will be prizes for three age groups. The other is our Egg Hunt on Easter Saturday in and around the centre of Braunston, open to children and grown-ups alike. It shouldn’t take you very long and there will be a prize of an age-appropriate book (and perhaps some other treats if you are lucky!) for everyone who hands in a completed questionnaire. Just come along to the village green to register between 11am and 1pm and enjoy yourselves! For full details of both events, including a down-loadable egg decorating sheet, go to: www.facebook.com/thealternativebookclub. For those who don’t know, we in The Alternative Book Club are a motley crew who like to read books. We take turns in setting a book for all to read and we meet monthly to tell each other exactly what we thought of it! On a different night each month we gather to read poems on a given theme and to have a light-hearted quiz. We usually meet in The Wheatsheaf over a drink or two or, in the summer, perhaps in someone’s garden (more drinks!) but during Covid restrictions we have been getting together on Zoom. Our meetings are informal and light-hearted and we usually end up chatting about all and everything under the sun! Why not come and join us? You’ll be very welcome. Just drop an email to Laura at thealternativebookclub@braunston.org.uk for more details.

Weather report January 2021 Please note that the weather station is approximately 4 metres above the ground and as such ground temperatures may be a couple of degrees lower. On the 25th of Jan at 5am the temperature had fallen to - 6.20 C. We had a relatively nice warm day on the 28th of Jan when we reached 12.60 C at about half past two in the afternoon. It is amazing just how the temperature can fluctuate so quickly. The barometer reached a high of 1020.5hpa on the 15th and dropped to a low of 959.9hpa on the 20th. The wettest day was the 28th Jan when we had 17.1mm of rain and the wettest week was the week finishing on the 30th with 32mm of rain falling during the week. The total rain for January was 87.1mm or nearly 3.5 inches, so making this the wettest January since our local records began in 2015.

It was also quite windy at times with the wind reaching an average high of 31.5mph on the 21st and we had a gust of 42.3mph on the 21st at 2:11 am. I am sorry but there is no max sun reading this month as I forgot to write it down before I zeroed the month’s readings on my weather station. Adrian Pell. January rainfall in mms

Features Recollections and letters Sent to us from a Braunston resident Billy S. In 1956 I met Margaret Rutherford, Richard Todd, Jeffrey Hunter, Barbara Murray and Peter Sellers. For those too young to remember these were all famous actors. It was 2am in the morning and the occasion was the celebration of the first year of ITV which had launched in 1955 on channel 3 in London. A party was in full swing on board a boat moored up in London. I asked Peter Sellers if he had seen William Holden, he said he hadn't seen him. Why did I ask this?, well my wife loved William Holden, she was a great fan of his and I had told her I would try and get his autograph. No luck, so disappointed I had to walk a long way home (like walking from Braunston to Weedon and back!) William Holden was one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s, starring in some of Hollywood’s most popular films. In 1987, the first time Her Majesty used a carriage during the Trooping of the Colour I was watching it on television. Prior to this for 18 consecutive years she had ridden side saddle on a black horse called Burmese, wearing the uniform of the regiment whose colour was being trooped. As I watched Her Majesty stepping down the steps of the carriage I involuntarily held my arm out as if to hold her arm to help her down……..but I know you don’t do things like that. So I wrote to Her Majesty and said one of her soldiers should have been at hand to assist. I had a nice letter back form Buckingham Palace thanking me for being concerned about Her Majesty. 26

Lockdowns is not just a thing of the present, but how fortunate we are now to have modern technology. Extract from the BVN May 1997 by Dick Herne. Braunston’s Annual Wake, a traditional fair, used to be held in the week following All Saints’ Day in November. In 1834 the celebrations were cut short by an outbreak of cholera which had come from northern England via several midland towns. The first two cases attracted little notice, but at the beginning of Wakes Week the disease spread among the boatmen and labourers living in Cross Lane. The number of deaths led to the calling of a parish meeting on 18th November. A board of health composed of doctors, overseers of the poor and the curate set to work to counter the spread of the disease decided to close down the fair and the public houses and forbade gatherings of people, even for funerals. Piles of refuse suspected of causing the outbreak were cleared and all the bedding and clothing of victims was destroyed. New cases were isolated in empty parish cottages fumigated with burning lime and pitch. As a result the outbreak was halted, only one more person died, making a total of nineteen. The outbreak cost the parish £460 - a considerable sum in those days. Journals and essays from a quintessential Englishman Stephen Dawson, who spent his childhood in Wolfamcote. In the 1920s life was simple and without technical complexity, although there were already occasional motor cars to be seen travelling at a sedate 20 mph. There were many light horse drawn vehicles but a carriage and pair was becoming unusual, so as a small child I paused when one went slowly by. The closed carriage was driven by a man in full livery, well wrapped up against the night chill. On the door was a coat-of-arms and from the window above I met the eyes of an enamelled face of a very old lady. She had been born well before the age of aeroplanes, telephones and wireless she was looking at a small boy who would live beyond the time of the conquest of space. I later found out that it was Lady Riddell of Bragborough Hall. Born during the reign of King William the fourth. 27
