Letter from Principal & Chair A strong foundation isn’t just built once, to support a single edifice. A sustained vision requires ongoing support. The 2020-21 school year is testament to our community’s continued generosity and support for students, families, employees, alum, past parents, grandparents and other friends, through what was a most turbulent year. Indeed, though these times have been a challenge for us all, we are so incredibly grateful to have nevertheless seen a tremendous increase in the number of donations from our community members. We gained 30 per cent more donors, surging from 656 to 851. What a wonderful example of your commitment to our students and our administration. Throughout such disruption, the message you sent was a clear, bright light; we continue to strengthen our foundation, together. Many fault lines appeared around us this year, including a shared reckoning of the long overdue and still unfinished changes needed to end systemic racism. We have undertaken foundational work in support of our key strategic priority of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, with initiatives that include curriculum changes and the launch of a DEI audit. Building on a rich tradition of leadership across our entire community, donors came forward to support student need and plurality of perspective, establishing landmark scholarships and bursaries for Black and Indigenous students. To ensure no student misses out because of unanticipated circumstances, a total of $1.04 million in support for financial assistance enhanced our students’ experiences.

Our foundation for the future is also embodied in our plan for the Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (ICAST). This innovative, multi-purpose, collaborative space will ensure we are well-prepared to adapt and thrive on campus, offering flexible space for imagination and creativity to soar. Our school’s senior leadership is deeply committed to this project, and we look forward to embracing our broader community’s participation in bringing the ICAST to life. We trust this Donor and Giving Report reminds you of the impact of each contribution, as we co-create a Branksome that reflects both our history and our ever-evolving mission to empower students with the future-focused skills they require to flourish, collaborate, contribute and lead, in a diverse range of fields. With gratitude, thank you for ensuring our community’s foundation is, and will remain, stronger than ever.

Gifting the Desire to be Great WITH A FOUNDATIONAL GIFT TO ESTABLISH THE ICAST BUILDING, CHETAN MATHUR AND CLARA ANGOTTI ARE BRIDGING THE GENDER DIVIDE IN STEM INDUSTRIES

Accolades for pioneering female leadership have followed Clara Angotti throughout her career in the heavily male-dominated field of tech entrepreneurship. As the president of Next Pathway, which she co-founded with husband Chetan Mathur, Clara leads the development of software that migrates on-premise corporate data warehouses and applications to the cloud. “There is no shortage of female entrepreneurs, but there are not many in the technology space,” says Clara, who is also a Branksome Board of Governors member and was named one of the “Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Technology” by the National Diversity Council in May 2021. Her remarkable journey to the top started in 2012 when she was awarded an RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award in recognition of Next Pathway’s launch and her work as a mentor. Now, with a foundational gift to break ground on the ICAST, Clara and Chetan are thrilled to help cement the school’s vision, a facility that will give Branksome students an edge on innovative, interdisciplinary thinking and prepare them for the opportunities and careers of tomorrow. “What separates Branksome from other schools is the value it places on strong, scientific, exploratory inquiry,” says Chetan. “One of its core foundations of inquiry is that being innovative requires that you put aside your ego and what you believe to be true. Embracing trial and error is where real learning and innovation happens. We live and breathe this, and that’s why we want to help redefine what a school building looks like. We ‘get’ that world so clearly, and now’s the time for Branksome to build the structure to support this vision.”

Parents of Grade 8 student Berlin, Chetan and Clara have enjoyed watching her evolve into an inquisitive, open-minded thinker. As benefactors of the Athletic and Wellness Centre just as Berlin was beginning her Branksome journey, they now welcome the opportunity to leave Branksome a better place with this foundational support. “With a studio theatre, fabrication space, and computing and engineering tools, students will be learning in a more tactile and visual way,” says Clara. “The complete flexibility of the configurable space, and its invitation to collaborate will encourage the girls to take risks, learn through experimentation, and apply critical thinking to overcome challenges.” “Most importantly, the opportunity to inhabit this inspirational space will support the leadership skills of tomorrow,” says Clara, “and that’s really what it’s all about.” “The traditional ideas of a ‘leader’ are being redefined,” she says. “The best leaders are humble and thoughtful in their guidance; they have the confidence to ask questions, seek opinions from diverse voices and inspire people through action. In my opinion, important qualities for young girls include empathy, curiosity, and gratitude. And of course, a healthy dose of competitiveness, fearlessness, and the desire to be great.” 2020-21 DONOR AND GIVING REPORT 4

Establishing a Legacy of Diversity and Cultural Understanding KURANKYE SEKYI-OTU & CHERYL NORONHA’S WALK STRONG SCHOLARSHIP WILL SHAPE HOW GIRLS PERCEIVE SUCCESS

Kurankye Sekyi-Otu’s father was not born with that last name. After emigrating from Ghana to the US—accepting positions at Harvard University to study and then at York University to teach as a philosophy professor for 35 years—Kurankye’s father went by Walker. “As a former British colony, it was common for Ghanaians to have a British name,” says the newly instated Branksome Board of Governors member and Chief Strategy Officer at Polar Asset Management Partners Inc. “My father changed his last name to one of Ghanaian heritage to remain connected to the country of his birth. We’re the first generation of Sekyi-Otu children to carry the legacy of that name.” Kurankye and wife Cheryl Noronha, who is of South Asian descent, want their daughter Safia (Grade 4) to see others who look like her in the school, especially in light of the school’s strategic priority of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. To that end, they have established the Sekyi-Otu & Noronha Walk Strong Scholarship, a four-year, $200,000 gift to support a student entering Grade 9 who identifies as Black. “There are so many studies about how girls perceive success,” he says. “And if they don’t see examples of others who reflect their identity, it’s harder to internalize the dream of, ‘That could be me one day.’ Walk Strong is a term we use to remain confident, whenever you are the only person of colour in an environment or situation. I’m in finance and Cheryl spent more than 20 years

in banking, and it’s so important to remember you belong; walk strong.” Cheryl, whose parents moved from India to England and eventually Canada, when she was two, says she was inspired to rediscover her own cultural heritage as a result of observing Kurankye’s family embracing their own. “My parents had focused on assimilating, to help us integrate, so in some ways I missed out on my heritage,” she says. “They’ve both since passed. Learning about Kurankye’s background has been an important illustration of how embracing your heritage sets the foundation for inner strength and confidence that every child deserves.” The family hopes this gift may inspire others to step up. They also hope Safia will step up to take on leadership opportunities at Branksome and that she will share her background with others. “We all want our kids to do great things,” says Kurankye. “Part of this journey started with my parents wanting a better life for us. We’re now in a position to have Safia go to a great school and we want to pay it forward by having a child who identifies as Black attend this great institution.”

Timely Award Honours Historical Turning Point PRICE FAMILY BURSARY ESTABLISHED TO SUPPORT INDIGENOUS STUDENT

This year, Canada marked the beginning of a new tradition: a federal day of observance and commemoration. Our first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 honoured children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

At this historic moment and with Branksome’s community focus on making a difference in others’ lives in mind, Foundation Board Trustee Tim Price and his wife Frances have established the Price Family Bursary to support an Indigenous student in Grades 9 through 12. “We applaud Tim and Frances for having the imagination and intuition that this is the moment for a young Indigeneous student to have the remarkable education and leadership that Branksome offers,” says Karrie Weinstock, Head, Centre for Strategic Leadership. “We aim to offer connections to both the Branksome community as well as to the student’s own Indigenous culture and language. This is great learning for us all, especially in light of the tragic history we are all intensely aware of.” The Prices, whose daughters Rosamond (‘95) and Louise (‘98) are alum, along with their grandchildren, Grade 4 student Olivia and Grade 7 student Grace, have all had an “extremely positive” experience at the school, says Frances.

“Branksome has offered and continues to offer my family the opportunity to make a huge difference in their lives at an extremely impressionable time,” she says. “The school years are so fundamental to development.” After a conversation with Principal Karen Jurjevich about an alum who was connected to the Indigenous community, and in light of the current national conversation about rethinking Indigenous history and the path forward, the Prices made a decision to establish an award that would offer an important opportunity. “We were very taken with this conversation,” says Frances, “We felt we should take a stronger role in growing leadership opportunities that a student could take and bring back to support their community.” “We hope this is the start of others in our community picking it up and making a difference,” says Tim. “It’s really about building bridges and our common humanity.”

HONOURING THE LEGACY OF RUTH BAYNE HOW HER FAMILY IS ENSURING RUTH’S MEMORY AND VALUES WILL LIVE ON IN THE COMMUNITY SHE LOVED

In retrospect, the pandemic lockdown last March gave Chad and Ruth Bayne the gift of family time when they didn’t know time was running out. Mother to twins Lesley and Anna, now in Grade 2, Ruth lost her 14-year battle with cancer last December, following a swift and unanticipated decline.

was the sense of community and strong support that initially drew the Baynes to Branksome, and then sustained their twins’ success and the family’s emotional resilience, first when Ruth’s health began to fail, and then through the incredible pain of tragic loss.

“The fact that Lesley and Anna were able to excel, notwithstanding, and were engaged and so excited by learning within this close-knit community, is testament to the quality of the school,” says Chad, whose $150,000 gift will establish the Ruth Bayne Leadership Through Action Fund. It will celebrate up to five Junior School students who demonstrate community service, along with support for servicelearning activities and programs.

The fund is a living memorial to Ruth’s lifelong focus on giving back, cemented as a young child when her father was ill; “Tikkun olam [a Hebrew word describing the Jewish imperative to engage in social action] was very much part of her upbringing,” says Chad. “Ruthie was always the first to collect snowsuits or donate half the twins’ Halloween candy to Ronald McDonald House,” he says.

“We had all that time together at home,” says Chad. “Nine months.” The twins started at Branksome last September and Ruth had the opportunity to meet fellow Branksome families last August in Rosedale Park, when she still had her health. It

“She had a very strong desire to set an example for the girls by giving back,” says Chad. “She was my wife and my best friend. What we’ve done for Branksome is our way to honour the best qualities that she had.” 2020-21 DONOR AND GIVING REPORT 8

PLEASE, CHEW GUM IN CLASS TO HONOUR HER DAUGHTER’S SUCCESS, JACKIE SANZ’87 HAS MADE MONTHLY GIFTS TO LEARNING STRATEGIES SINCE HER OWN GRADUATION. When Jackie SANZ’87 was a Branksome Hall student, the Learning Strategies program had not yet been created. Now, a monthly donor to it since her own graduation almost 25 years ago, she is at the top of her game as managing director, risk and compliance at global consulting firm, Protiviti. The reason for her support? “Girls need to know, from an early age, that they are valued and can be successful in whatever they do.” Jackie credits the progress of her daughter Samantha MOFFATTSANZ’21, who attends university in Montreal, to the essential support of Branksome’s Learning Strategies. “Samantha excelled in auditory comprehension but needed support with sensory control, such as sitting still and not fidgeting,” says Jackie. “She benefitted from special tactile input; that’s why she was the first to advocate chewing gum in class!”

Established when Samantha was in Grade 2, “The Learning Strategies department is invaluable to so many students because it helps them identify and capitalize on their areas of strength, and learn strategies and unique tools to excel,” says Head, Student Support Jane-Anne Tateishi. “Thanks to donors such as Jackie, Learning Strategies teachers are able to engage in professional development opportunities and ensure access to evidence-based resources to stay abreast of best practices to support all learners.” “I see what a difference this program made in my own child’s life,” says Sanz. “Continuing to give, to play such a beneficial role in the everyday life of the school, is a way to stay connected.”

ALUM PUSH ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION ENDOWED BURSARY FUND PAST $1 MILLION Thanks to momentum from our alum community overall, and a generous matching gift from Dr. Frances SHEPHERD’64, the Alumnae Association Endowed Bursary Fund has sailed past the $1 million mark. Providing needs-based student financial assistance to deserving students whose families are unable to afford the full cost of tuition, this is the largest single endowed fund held by the Branksome Hall Foundation — providing more than $30,000 in student financial assistance each year. “I give because Branksome played a big part in my

personal development. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without access to Banksome’s supportive teachers and staff, various leadership and volunteer opportunities, and exceptional resources”, says Hubie YU’08, lawyer and Branksome Hall Alumnae Association Treasurer (BHAA). Topping up a big year of giving from our alum, the BHAA has also committed $100,000 towards the ICAST project, adding an additional, collective show of support to sustain a legacy of opportunity for future generations of Branksome alum.

MONTANNA DIAKUN’11 REINVENTS HER REUNION FOR A GOOD CAUSE Without an in-person Reunion, and with many Branksome alum feeling Zoom fatigue, 10-year Reunion rep Montanna DIAKUN’11 knew that she had to find another way to help her classmates catch up with each other and with the school. And she wanted a fun way for all of them to contribute to their community. Inspired by a similar fundraiser held at her workplace every year, she created “Branksome Survivor: The Decade Edition,” with entry fees raising $650 for Branksome’s Principal’s Fund. Similar to the survivalist TV show, Montanna wrote short, suspenseful stories about how each participating classmate “left the island” (or Branksome, in this case), drawing names out of a hat throughout the month of May until only one person remained. Each story took place in a different area of the school, allowing participants to hear what had changed and stayed the same over the past 10 years. And each alum’s exit was unique, reflecting their own interests, career paths, and high school memories. At the end of it all, Maxine ZENTIL’11 won a gift card for a local business or charitable organization of her choice. Maxine chose to donate her prize to The Daily Bread Food Bank.

CRAFTY GIFTS FUND JUNIOR SCHOOL BURSARY

The level of quality and commitment that goes into student-produced stuffies, bath bombs and jewelry for Branksome’s annual Holiday Bazaar could give the much-loved Oneof-A Kind holiday show a run for its money, says Action Coordinator Kristin Buchanan. This year’s Junior School fundraiser allowed Grade 6 student Cameron Burke, who was passionate about recent conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion, to work with schoolmates to establish and raise funds for a new scholarship that supports a student from a racialized community. Already valued at $5,500, the Bazaar alone raised more than $4,500 and a Pyjama Day raised an additional $1,000. A committed staff donor, Kristin always makes sure she’s part of the fundraising, not just the organizing. “It’s important to model philanthropy,” she says. “We talk to the kids about giving time and talent, but financial support is also an important way of taking action. I love the Bazaar because it’s a great way for them to use their creative talents to make a difference.”

Donor Impact & School Achievements DONATIONS TO BRANKSOME HELP SHAPE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE IN ALL AREAS, FROM THE INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM TO A WIDE RANGE OF CO-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES. 1. THIRD IN THE WORLD! Branksome debaters had a world-class showing at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, hosted virtually by South Korea. The only school with two top 10 finishes, Branksome sent all four of our competitors (Emma, Amonda, Maylee and Nia) to finals. Nia placed sixth in the world and Maylee placed third! To watch their speeches and see how it’s done, visit Branksome Hall on YouTube and click “playlists.” 2. CLIMATE ACTIVISTS WIN NOODLE As forest fires impacted countries around the world, Grade 11 twins Kaitlin and Lauren won our inaugural Noodle pitch competition and the $10,000 grand prize with TreesCO2, a large-scale tree-planting initiative leveraging student brigades. A first-of-its-kind student business accelerator, “Noodlers” created companies that solve realworld problems. TreesCO2’s goal is nothing less than one trillion trees planted – 1,000 for every global youth aged 15 to 24. 3. CURE FOR COLOUR-BLINDNESS Grade 11 students Seungmyoung and Crystal earned a Toronto Science Fair Silver for designing a theoretical contact lens prototype that delivers CRISPR technology into the eye to repair colour blindness. Their winning research paper was accepted to the highly competitive Korea Scholar’s Conference for Youth and will be published in Yonsei University’s annual scholarly journal. They keep in contact with mentors from Brown University’s O’Connor-Giles lab specializing in CRISPR gene editing.

4. MODEL STUDENTS It was a weekend of achievement for our Model United Nations delegates on April 24-25 at Appleby College, where Grade 9 students Margaux and Thea won Best Delegate awards in their committees. At the Southern Ontario Model UN, hosted by University of Toronto Schools, Grade 9 student Yara earned the Outstanding Delegate award in her committee, while Grade 11 student Miranda and Grade 9 student Ari won honourable mentions.

5. 21ST CENTURY PHYSICS A refreshed Physics lab is providing a more innovative and collaborative learning environment for the increasing number of students taking physics, engineering and other STEM-related courses. 6. “DEAR 2020, I THINK WE SHOULD BREAK UP.” This year, we were all Grade 10 student Elizabeth, whose prose poem earned her First Prize from the Conference of Independent Teachers of English (CITE). Her work was selected from more than 90 student entries from 20 independent schools. “At the start of the lockdown, I was so excited to use this time for my dreams and aspirations, but it felt like it went by in a flash,” says Elizabeth, “and looking back, I could barely recall what I had done day by day. I wrote this prose poem to capture this sense of regret over wasted opportunities and how it has helped me grow as a person.” 7. NEW RESEARCH EXPLORES RECESS EXPERIENCE IN JUNIOR SCHOOLS Recess can make or break a child’s day. Despite its impact on social development, this cornerstone of student life has rarely been researched. Lead Social Worker Carolyn Mak launched an action research project exploring how feedback skills can impact girls’ abilities to forge stronger relationships and navigate peer conflict during elementary school recess periods in an all-girls school. The study’s findings were presented at the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools conference in June 2021.
