DONOR AND GIVING REPORT

Fiercely Independent

OUR STUDENTS ARE AT THE FOUNDATION OF ALL WE DO TO MAKE WAY FOR THEIR FUTURE TOGETHER

At our Make Way Campaign launch in September 2023, our students painted rocks. They were recently poured into the very foundation of the Karen L. Jurjevich Innovation Centre and Theatre. As an integral design feature of this issue, they acknowledge that you, our donors, are the bedrock of our 121-year mission to advance excellence in girls’ education.

CLEAR A PATH

THANKS TO YOU, THEY ’ RE COMING THROUGH

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND CHAIR

What an amazing start to our 2024–25 school year! Our Welcome Back Carnival was a shining example of the singular Branksome school spirit, with more than 1,000 community members coming out to celebrate a dynamic leadership transition and kick off our 121st year.

Speaking of community, we wouldn’t be in such an incredible position without our amazing donors, who were such a special part of a banner year of fundraising at Branksome Hall.

In 2023–24, we raised more than $12.5 million, thanks to an astonishing outpouring of generosity. We’re ecstatic about the milestone $5-million gift last June, the largest in our history and among the largest to a girls’ school in Canada. In the lifetime of the Make Way Campaign, more than 1,800 community members have come together to support the future of girls’ education. We are so proud of this bold and united community!

Our strong culture of philanthropy plays a key role in sustaining and invigorating our students’ curricular and co-curricular activities, providing endless opportunities that define their passions and ambitions.

As we move ever more resolutely to future-proof our girls’ education and dissolve gender barriers that exist in the top careers of tomorrow, the Karen L. Jurjevich Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST) is at the very heart of this vision. Building projects like this simply don’t happen without philanthropic support, and your impact on the future of girls’ education couldn’t be channelled more effectively. Nothing speaks more clearly to our community’s support for our students’ future than the success we have enjoyed thus far.

And we’re far from done yet. We’ll continue to Make Way until iCAST’s completion in the fall of 2025. To illustrate, our cover image offers a distinctly Branksome twist on the iconic 1932 photograph Lunch atop a Skyscraper. This building is the embodiment of our innovative spirit—leading by example for other schools. Your support helps ensure Branksome Hall continues to be a catalyst—empowering and launching a new generation of learners and leaders. The original image contained men only; in this updated version, our girls are sitting on top of the world!

In these pages, we invite you to learn more about the tremendous impact of donations from our current and past community of parents and grandparents, amazing alums and employees, all of whom are stepping up for girls in so many ways.

In an age that makes constant demands on your attention and philanthropic resources, we’re profoundly grateful for your decision to prioritize our students’ success and Branksome’s enduring future. On behalf of our graduating class, who received a combined 724 offers from 113 universities across four different countries—not to mention $4.3 million in scholarship offers—and those students who will benefit hugely from the impact of your support in the years to come, thank you for being part of our Branksome community!

WELCOME BACK CARNIVAL

MAKES WAY FOR PRINCIPAL GRACE M c CALLUM

It’s a much-anticipated annual tradition, but this is surely the first time our annual Welcome Back event has included a Brazilian conga line with festive drumming and dancers.

More than 1,000 students, parents, alums and community members embraced the Brazilian theme to welcome our eighth principal, Grace McCallum, her husband, Chris, and daughters Lila and Avery, from the American School of Brasilia in Brazil and back to Canada (Grace hails from Miramichi, N.B.).

Make Way Campaign Chair Claire MacNamara announced the grand total to date: $32,729,325! Thank you to all our donors whose gifts contributed to this historic outpouring of giving with incredible impact on transformational girls’ learning. And we’re not stopping now! Our donors are also accelerating momentum for broader community participation—because we’re not done yet. With a goal to raise an additional $5 million in 2024–25, Branksome will raise the bar both on philanthropy to girls’ schools and on their representation in male-dominated careers.

With iCAST at the centre of our three funding priorities (along with the Opportunity Fund and Financial Assistance), our donors aren’t just supporting bricks and mortar. They’re also supporting the creativity and innovation the space will make possible, and the profound impact it will have on both our daughters and the broader community.

PRINCIPAL GRACE M c CALLUM THANKS DONORS

A special reception before the Carnival was a wonderful opportunity for our most generous donors to meet with our new principal before heading out to celebrate. Principal McCallum (above) also had a chance to share a communal toast to Make Way’s leadership donors.

The grand total raised to date was revealed at our Welcome Back Carnival on Sept. 13.

TRIBUTE CAMPAIGN FOR KAREN JURJEVICH

After 26 years as Branksome Hall’s seventh principal, it was a long, emotional and altogether unforgettable goodbye to Karen Jurjevich. An unprecedented groundswell of philanthropic support from around the world and every corner of the Branksome community resulted in donation levels previously unseen at Branksome. Here’s a recap of Karen’s Tribute Campaign, and why so many felt compelled to give in honour of a principal who had such a transformative impact on the school and generations of its people.

HISTORIC $5-MILLION GIFT IS LARGEST IN BRANKSOME HISTORY

It was huge news about a record-setting gift in support of the Make Way Campaign in May.

This gift was a celebration of Karen Jurjevich’s 26-year tenure of remarkable leadership and supported her final passion project. The Karen Jurjevich Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST) was thus named and funded and will forever stand as the final chapter in her transformative legacy.

Additionally, more than 300 alums from around the world, past and present parents and grandparents, as well as colleagues and friends of the school, stepped up to raise an additional $1.5 million for a total of $6.5 million in support of Karen’s Tribute Campaign, including significant gifts.

A special thank-you is due to the Tribute Committee chairs, including former Board Chairs Wayne Barwise, Wendy Cecil, Raj Chandaria, Jim Christie, Jean Cloutier, Tony Graham and Peter Singer. Along with other community members and Board Chair Mona Malone, they played a pivotal role in galvanizing support for this initiative.

The gift was announced at a special farewell gala on May 4 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, where colleagues and community members feted Karen and the final feather in her cap of Branksome “firsts,” which also included ushering in the IB World School Programme, establishing Branksome Hall Asia and building the Athletics and Wellness Centre.

“We are sincerely grateful for this historic gift in support of girls’ education and to all our donors who have boldly united to create a legacy of transformational learning befitting this extraordinary leader,” says Board Chair Mona Malone. “Throughout her life and career, Karen has championed girls’ education and opportunity. We’re never afraid to lead, and there aren’t enough buildings named to honour women. Again, on that front, too, we’re proud to lead the way.”

Thanks to a total of $6.5 million raised for the Tribute Campaign for Karen Jurjevich, the Karen L. Jurjevich Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre was funded and named as a lasting legacy in her honour. ▲

KAREN JURJEVICH’S INTERNATIONAL FAREWELL TOUR

Farewell tours aren’t just for rock stars!

Karen’s final year included a whirlwind visit with colleagues, alums and parents at Branksome Hall Asia and a series of wellattended branch receptions outside Canada, including in Seoul and Hong Kong in March and in New York and London in April.

So many alums came forth from across Europe, Asia and the U.S. to support Karen’s Tribute Campaign. They honoured a principal who personified the school’s reputation for taking risks and leading from the front, making it possible for Branksome to do things no other school had ever done—and for the students inspired by her leadership to model her unique, energetic and entrepreneurial-minded approach.

“As Karen’s tenure comes to a close, it is our chance to show Karen how thankful we are for all she has done to transform Branksome,” said U.S. Tribute Representative C.K. PURKS Hoffler’80. “With our students and alums always at the forefront, she has helped build a school and community that is rivalled around the globe.”

Thank you to our other International Tribute Representatives who gave their time to work on this historic initiative: Claire ANGUS’83, Findlay CAPLAN’12, Bridget HORNE Colman’87, Louise PRICE Doyle’98, Rosamond PRICE Minson’94.

EMPLOYEE TRIBUTE CAMPAIGN

After 26 years of Principal Jurjevich's leadership, it was time for an appreciative outpouring of staff and faculty generosity.

Hats were off to Karen, literally, at a very fond, and often teary, final farewell party on June 21. Employees were invited to “saddle up for a shindig like no other to tip our hats, dust off the cowboy boots and don your finest denim” for a westernthemed “Soo Do.” (If you know, you know that Karen proudly hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, a.k.a. “the Soo.”)

It was the culminating celebration in a year that saw an outpouring of employee generosity towards Karen’s Tribute Campaign. Denim was also the exception to workwear on two special “Jeans for Jurjevich” days in April and May, where the price of the hall pass was a campaign contribution.

Great appreciation to those Employee Tribute Committee members, including former employees, who enthusiastically led this fundraising effort: (front row, left to right) Sandra BOLTÉʼ73, Michelle Iwata, Edith Louie, Chevon Cragg, Judith FRIENDʼ75; (back row, left to right) Andrea Mills, Danielle Bourgon, Deepa Raj.

▲ Karen Jurjevich hosted her final Branch Reception in the U.K. on April 29.
▲ Employees wore "Jeans for Jurjevich" to raise spirit and funds in April and May.
Employees signed this cut-out of Karen at her “Soo Do” on June 21.

“WHY I GAVE”

So many community members have stepped up to honour Karen and her gifts for leadership, friendship, strength of character and strategic vision. Here are just a few of their reasons for giving to her Tribute Campaign.

You are the reason we chose Branksome Hall, Karen! We wish our girls could become women like you— intelligent and elegant, ambitious and charming. Thank you for what you have done for the school, making it such a beautiful and outstanding environment for our girls.

Helen Luo (Jennifer QU’18 and Victoria’26)

iCAST itself is a phenomenal building project. What it will give the students is beyond what I could have imagined when I was at Branksome. But it’s Karen’s vision. So it’s important to acknowledge that this is her legacy and that she came up with this idea.

Louise PRICE Doyle’99

Karen has never forgotten what it’s like to be young and to have goals and dreams. She’s incredibly aware of the elements you need to get to the point where you’re ready to strive for your dreams. She’s also amazing at recognizing that in people as well, even if it’s not obvious to them. We’re not only recognizing Karen and the extraordinary things she has done for Branksome. In a sense we’re also recognizing women. There’s something special about Branksome, and I think it’s very important to recognize when greatness has happened—and this is one of those cases.

Karen and I started at Branksome Hall the same year! She has contributed so much to education globally with Branksome Hall Asia, and she has dedicated 26 years of her life to the school here in Toronto. Through her leadership, this remarkable role model for women has changed my life and shaped my career. She has an ability to anticipate changing times and prepare for the unknown. She lives by the vision and mission of our school and always has everyone’s best interests at heart. She has equipped generations of students, employees and alums to develop the skills, insight and imagination to shape a better world.

SHAPING THE COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION AT BRANKSOME HALL

GET TO KNOW KEVIN

worked for 11 years at Apple Canada. On my first day at Apple, no one was around. It was just me and my Mac and an iPad, nothing else. The message? If you’re waiting for someone to tell you what to do, you’re in the wrong place. Start asking questions! That’s what iCAST is about. You have the opportunity to shape your learning experience. When a student has an idea to explore or a problem to solve, our community of educators can support and nurture it.

iCAST gives students the opportunity to think about challenges in daily life as they build the grit and persistence to embrace multiple failures before they achieve success. James Dyson built 5,127 prototypes of his vacuum before he got it right! All ‘technology’ is just a new solution to a real-world problem. For example, consider the battery, the Tesla, or if you go further back, the Gutenberg Press, which allowed people to print pages quickly.

To get there, the integration and synergy between the various design spaces and the Noodle business accelerator in iCAST is going to be powerful. And the exploration of the arts also intersects with technology. Visual art is a language. Computer code is a form of language. We need to be mindful of the connections students can make between disciplines. iCAST will teach students that every subject can inform, inspire and be part of the same thing–innovation.

Apple Ace

Kevin worked with Apple Canada for 11 years, most recently as an educator on the Leadership and Learning team, helping school districts create unique technology-based solutions. As co-chair of Black@Apple, he advanced Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) program delivery.

From Education to Entrepreneurship

In addition to setting out as an entrepreneur in freelance web development and Internet startups, he worked in education extensively, as director of IT at St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School and director of new media at Appleby College.

Full STEAM Ahead

Kevin loves the arts! He started his teaching career as a media, music and visual arts teacher at the Bishop Strachan School and holds a double bachelor of education and musical arts from Western University. (He plays clarinet, saxophone and all the band instruments!)

Daria LEE’24 and Cate MIRVISH’24

Robotics has been a staple of extra-curriculars, but with the Robotics Lab in iCAST, so many more students will be inspired to try it and maybe find that they’re passionate about it. In the past we had to actively seek it out, but now everyone will be able to be aware of and interact with technology, meet student mentors and other experts and figure out their paths. It’s amazing that there will be such a large space devoted to STEM in the school, with the STEAM Lab and the Woodworking and Metal Shops. We didn’t have access to iCAST ourselves but we’re really excited for what’s to come. Our advice? Don’t be afraid to get involved, and be curious about every opportunity, even if you’re terrified at the start!

Daria and Cate were the 2023–24 co-heads of the Robotics Team; Daria was also chair of the STEAM Council and was the only Graduating Year student to earn an Emerald Pin, the highest award for commitment to performing arts. Daria is studying Mechanical Engineering with Management at the University of Manchester. Cate is studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

i CAST: END-USER MEETINGS HELP INFORM STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Think of it as a multi-level playground for imaginative ideation—with all the tools, faculty support and expert input needed to invent almost anything. Thanks to a series of end-user meetings last winter, student leaders and faculty came together to discuss how best to optimize iCAST for cross-disciplinary learning and curricular integration. Our debaters are anticipating the opportunities of the Pitch Space. Our Robotics Club heads can’t wait to bust out of their current classroom space and start preparing for competitions in the Robotics Arena. Others said: I can’t wait to create virtual-reality content in the Media Studio; It’s going to be amazing to have a dedicated Robotics Arena!; So, Noodle [our business incubator] is going to have a permanent pop-up space?; iCAST is so beautiful! And the tension grid hanging high above the flexible Studio Theatre space allows students to design and execute incredible lighting set-ups for all kinds of performances. After a well-attended informal student session, with a “fly-through” video presentation featuring animated architectural renderings, one student won’t be the last to say: “That tension grid is fire!”

MAKING WAY FOR i CAST

SUSTAINING A FAMILY LEGACY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Joel and Melissa Feldberg have named the Centre for Entrepreneurship within iCAST. It includes both headquarters for our Noodle business incubator and the Ideation Garage.

Joel Feldberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Furniture Group, and Melissa Feldberg, Family Physician and Investigating Coroner, Central West Region

We invested in iCAST because it is such a unique space that will enhance the girls’ learning opportunities in ways that didn’t exist before. Entrepreneurship is particularly important to us since we own and operate a family business established by my father almost 60 years ago. Canada was built on the success of so many entrepreneurs from that era. We need to continue to foster that entrepreneur mindset to enable our students and our country to thrive and compete on a world scale, today and in the future. We are most excited for the creative opportunities that will be available for both Eden and Lucy, using leading-edge technology in an environment that will foster inspiration and collaboration outside the typical classroom. Having access to a multimedia Studio Theatre, robotics and other media applications will allow them to discover and develop new interests, enabling them to understand the Innovation Mindset, to prepare them for university and beyond.

(Eden, Grade 10; Lucy, Grade 7)

THANK YOU FOR MAKING YOUR MARK WITH OUR STEPPING STONES DONOR WALL

MAKING THEIR MARK. MAXIMIZING THEIR IMPACT.

Ian and Gail Brooker, and Kimberly and Ashlyn Carter

We have such a long history with Branksome Hall. My [Ian’s] mother, Jane MORGAN Brooker’37, went to Branksome and so did Gail’s sister, Sue WILLIAMS Beverley’61. So when our daughter, Kimberly [Branksome’s Executive Director of Enrolment Management], told us about the Stepping Stones as a way to commemorate our legacy with the school, we knew it was a perfect way to honour all the generations who benefited from this exceptional institution while supporting the future of girls’ education.

We’re so supportive of Branksome Hall because of how it impacted our daughter. We value this community because it set up Kimberly for a wonderful life. Among the highlights, she was a Clan Chieftain and loved co-curriculars like hockey and the symphony orchestra. The school really encouraged the girls to be the best they could be. Of course, it’s evolved since then, especially its academic standing.

When we attended the Noodle Expo [the tradeshow where Senior & Middle School student entrepreneurs in this business accelerator program show off their ventures] in April, it really blew us away— watching the students build their own businesses and learning about the products they’d developed.

[Our granddaughter] Ashlyn is in JK and she is very outgoing. We know she’s absolutely going to thrive at Branksome, engaged in this wonderful environment and these incredible opportunities.

(Parents of Kimberly BROOKER Carter’96; grandparents of Ashlyn, JK)

GOING PLACES STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

In 2023–24, we were the champions in so many sports and on top of the “Worlds” in public speaking, tallied up star showings at Canadian math competitions, found time to put on some amazing shows and much more.

Our graduating class received a combined 724 offers from 113 universities across four countries (40 per cent from the U.S., 49 per cent from Canada and 11 per cent from overseas)—not to mention $4.3 million in scholarship offers! Their achievements were remarkable: six Ivy League acceptances; six direct-entry medical program offers; over two-thirds entering competitive STEM programs and top business schools; and one-third joining prestigious arts, humanities and social sciences programs.

⊳ We were the CISAA champions in seven sports, including Junior Ultimate Frisbee, U13, U14 and Junior Tennis and Junior Volleyball, U14 Cross Country and Intermediate Squash.

Green Jewels is a recycled jewellery company and the first profitable Noodle company to sell its wares outside Branksome at various markets. It also shares 15 per cent of profits with Fridays for the Future Toronto, a youth-led grassroots environmental charity. Founders Apple and Jordin are definitely both doing good and doing well. They are also donating 15 per cent of their profits back to Noodle, to give back to the program that supported them.

Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs Are Thriving (and Giving Back) with Noodle

It’s a good thing Noodle will have a new permanent home in iCAST because the popular business incubator keeps expanding. Participation more than doubled in 2023–24. When launched for Grades 7–12 in May 2020, 13 students on five teams test-drove the ambitious 38-week program. Now, 90 Grades 7–12 students in 41 companies are involved.

At a two-day Dragon’s Den –style pitch on April 10 and 11, companies pitched for a portion of funds, based on need, with 16 receiving a share. Additionally, our Noodle Expo on April 24 showed our community that our girls are getting set to close the gender divide in entrepreneurship. Impressive guest speakers were Kaitlin and Lauren GRIERSON’22, founders of TreesCO2, a tree-planting venture that won the inaugural Noodle pitch contest. Now at Queen’s University, they shared how their connections and partnerships with Noodle shaped and helped direct their current successes. In March, the Noodle Jr. Tradeshow showcased the Noodle feeder program, now in its second year, for students in Grades 4–6 students, with 13 companies and 36 students.

School-Wide Star Showings for Math Competitions

Six Pi-Landers Math Club members placed first in the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC) at Pickering College in April. To support students in fostering a love for math, dedicated math faculty organize and host 20 local, national and international math contests each year. The rigorous three-part contest was a success for Angela (Grade 12), Catherine, Alana, Janice and Sylvia (all Grade 11) and Erica (Grade 10). “Sometimes students see problem-solving as an individual activity, but team competition showed me how collaborating to solve a problem can be fun,” says club co-head Janice. Graduating co-head Angela took her math to the next level at the University of Waterloo, after scoring 90 out of 100 on the Euclid Math Contest (part of the application process), the best result from a Branksome student in over 25 years! Not to be outdone, in November, Grade 6 students Amira, Victoria and Vianna tallied up impressive results in the Fibonacci Math Contest! Amira was crowned Canadian champion and Team Branksome finished second nationally.

Come One, Come All!

Arts events offered something for everyone.

As the Senior & Middle School Integrated Arts Team’s mission statement reads: “We ignite artistic wonder and empower our community to connect while creatively exploring the shared human experience.” That they did! Highlights included the Senior School’s production of She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen, exploring “the geek and warrior within us all,” in November, and the Middle School production of Soundscapes by Claudia Haas and Sarah Kraning, an exploration of neurodiversity, in February. (Both were held at the Aga Khan Museum’s theatre while iCAST construction continues.) At the Junior School, students shone in performances, including the Grades 1 and 2 production of Cinderella in May and the Grades 5 and 6 musical performance of The Little Mermaid in November. Our Diploma 2 Visual Arts Exhibition in April offered a fascinating peek into our students’ creative evolution, featuring their artworks spanning JK to Grade 11.

In addition to winning “Worlds,” Class of ’24 valedictorian Anna earned a prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship and is studying public policy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Grade 12 Student Anna GAGEʼ24 Crowned World Champion at 37th Worlds

When 117 of the best speakers in the world come together, there’s no disputing it will be a world-class debate. At the 37th World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships, hosted by Canberra Girls Grammar School in Australia last April, Anna Gage made it to the finals in all four events—debating, impromptu speaking, interpretive reading and prepared speech. Her persuasive speech on “evergreening” addressed how pharmaceutical companies prolong patents to vital medication. Anna was named this year’s overall World Champion, the first time a Branksome student has won since 2010, when Zeenia FRAMROZE’11 took the top spot.

THE POWER OF DOING IN POSITION FOR THE JOB MARKET OF TOMORROW

Chad Bayne, Partner, Emerging and High Growth Companies,

Technology has become more pervasive in everyday life, and as the pace accelerates, it’s more important than ever to be fully tech-literate. We need our daughters to be immersed in an environment where it can become second nature. There is nothing like iCAST in Canada—where students have it all readily available. It’s a real game-changer.

always talk about the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration and project work at the university level, but it’s an incredible opportunity to have this all in one building at such a young age. To problem-solve, you need engineering and design and creativity all working together, but you also need to factor in how the real world works. You can build the best mousetrap, but if it doesn’t suit the user, you haven’t solved the problem.

It’s essential to draw together different viewpoints and user experiences to create innovative products and solutions. For example, [my daughter]

Lesley took a filmmaking course. But imagine if she were working on a film in the iCAST Media Studio with actors from Branksome’s drama program? That’s how you gain inspiration—from the synergy between those two programs.

iCAST will allow faculty to teach differently with this amazing range of hands-on tools at their disposal. Everyone gets excited about doing, like actually doing lighting for a theatrical production. You may not end up in a related career, but exposure to opportunities to build and do so many creative and tech-driven projects produces an invaluable knowledge base and makes every student more well-rounded, whatever career they choose to pursue.

(Anna and Lesley, Grade 5)

We’re witnessing the fourth Industrial Revolution as we move from a labour-focused economy to a digital economy. If we want our kids positioned where the puck will be tomorrow, we need to make that investment early. Related to that is the change in what it means to be an ‘employee.’ We’ve moved from the days of lifelong employment to a situation where, at some level, everyone will have to be an entrepreneur, selling their own service and employing other contractors.

By offering the hands-on design and technology-based skills so essential for tomorrow, iCAST opens these opportunities for our daughters. They’ll be ready to embrace a career that involves innovation or entrepreneurship. Even for students who aren’t necessarily interested in science, technology, entrepreneurship and math (STEM), parents might not realize that their daughters just need to know how to leverage technology. You don’t need to code, because over the past 30 years it has become ‘drag and drop.’

Do you need to know how a car works to drive one? iCAST is going to teach students how to use technology creatively and enable it.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are two great career choices. iCAST will help our students get hooked early, and this is why Carryn and invested in this building. Rome is so excited about embracing the opportunity to explore it. She doesn’t want to be a coder, but she may want to build a company. When grew up, success was dictated by my ability to be a professional, a doctor or lawyer. That was the absolute pinnacle. Now, 30 years later, being an innovative thinker takes you to the top of the pyramid. It’s a fascinating shift.

(Rome, Grade 10)

ANNUAL FUND OPPORTUNITY FUND

The Annual Fund is the bedrock of our fundraising. Capital projects such as iCAST simply can’t happen without philanthropic support. In 2023–24, 60 per cent of donors made their Annual Fund gift to support iCAST.

Additionally, Annual Fund gifts also support school life, including curriculum development, financial assistance, the Athletics program, arts instruction and resources, and many vibrant co-curricular activities such as the Model UN Club. While tuition supports the school’s operations, the Annual Fund is pivotal to ensuring an exceptional education for our students.

THE ANNUAL FUND HAS THREE FUNDING PILLARS: i CAST, THE OPPORTUNITY FUND, AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

YOU MADE WAY FOR A RECORD YEAR! THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS ANDGRANDPARENTS—PAST AND PRESENT—ALUMS, FACULTY AND STAFF WHO HELPED RAISE

FUND.

(See complete Giving Highlights on page 10.)

Our donors give for all sorts of personal reasons that are meaningful to them. And, we also need—and thank— those donors who provide funds designated for general purposes in response to student needs throughout the school year. Their generosity provides resources for renovations and upgrades, guest speakers and enhanced curricular and co-curricular experiences.

Alex Pizale

With so many giving opportunities, we chose to give to the Opportunity Fund because we felt the school is in the best position to allocate resources to its advantage. Since her first year at Branksome, Astrid has truly loved everything about the school, and we’ve especially been blown away by her teachers. We don’t have backgrounds in science ourselves but Astrid loves it, and she has even set up a lab in her room with a microscope! We gave because we are giving back to something larger–an entire community that also includes Astrid’s older cousin! Since Astrid started at the school in JK, we have realized that the opportunities for academic and personal growth are just so phenomenal. We’re giving back because we’re so happy to have a partner in Astrid’s upbringing, not just in her education but in her emotional and social growth as well.

(Astrid, Grade 1)

OPPORTUNITY FUND

Here are some of the interesting, popular, entertaining and elevating ways our donors to the Opportunity Fund made a tremendous impact on our students’ experience.

Model United Nations Primed Tomorrow’s Leaders

It was a jam-packed year for our future stateswomen! Our Branksome Model UN team had a successful conference at The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) in the Netherlands in January. Our donors allowed 13 of our most advanced Model UN delegates to travel there to debate and create resolutions for important world issues such as human rights, international security and disarmament, and climate change. Branksome is honoured to have been continuously invited to this conference for many years, along with the most academically prestigious schools around the world.

In April, students took on Cornell MUN at one of the most competitive Ivy League MUN conferences in North America, in Ithaca, N.Y. The delegates learned about international relations by leading debates about significant world issues and passing innovative resolutions.

The Shows Goes On … Thanks to Our Donors

The Annual Fund continues to enable Branksome Hall’s school-wide calendar of student performances at the Aga Khan Museum’s auditorium, including the Middle School production of Soundscapes by Claudia Haas and Sarah Kraning, an exploration of neurodiversity, in February. See more under “Student Achievement,” page 24.

Blue Sky Thinking? Enter Red Sky

Middle & Senior School students have a unique opportunity to partner with Red Sky Performance, an internationally renowned Canadian Indigenous dance, theatre and music company. Students first engaged with the innovative community partnership in September and will continue to do so throughout the 2023–24 school year. Further collaboration is scheduled throughout the school year.

Heydon Park Formal

Thanks to our donors’ support and our community’s efforts to provide unused formal wear, Branksome hosted a prom for the students of Heydon Park Secondary School on June 7. Heydon Park is TDSB’s only small, student-centred public high school for young women, transgender and non-binary students, dedicated to the common goal of ensuring students reach their full potential. Fuelled by a clothing drive to provide formal wear, led by faculty and student leaders, the night was an authentic prom experience. It allowed students to celebrate the achievement of high school graduation without the barrier of cost and upheld a key school value, Sense of Community.

Supporting Healthy Friendships

Navigating conflict in peer relationships is never easy but skill-building can help young girls ride the waves. Expert guest speaker Dr. Wendy Craig returned to the Junior School in January to speak to parents as part of the donor-funded Well-Being Series. A Canadian leader in bullying prevention and healthy relationships. Craig is a Professor of Psychology at Queen’s University and Scientific Co-Director of PREVNet, a network of scholars and practitioners devoted to healthy relationships and bullying prevention.

Equipping Our Rowers

Rowing Canada selected our rowers, alum Thea LAPHAM’24 and current students Sabrina and Jaime, as crew members for the Canadian team. They competed in the CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico in August, and in the 2024 World Rowing Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario, in August.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS LIFE LESSONS IN GENEROSITY AND LEADERSHIP

What a meaningful way to say goodbye to the Junior School. Now in its third year, the Grade 6 Legacy Fund enables parents and students to demonstrate a shared commitment to health and well-being while building community and a lifelong appreciation for the power of giving back. All decisions for purchases were entirely led and approved by the Grade 6 students themselves, a tremendous lesson in advocacy, empowerment and leadership.

Thanks to the generosity and leadership of our parent volunteers, the fund provided resources to support Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), including sports equipment for the lower field; a guest speaker on the healthy use of social media, a topic the Grade 6s overwhelmingly agreed would be of most value to their peers; a makeover with soft furniture for the Forum; and online resources to incorporate SEL into the classroom.

“This initiative not only enriches the Junior School but also teaches the students valuable lessons in philanthropy, teamwork and leadership,” says Aida Schwan-von Brasch, mother of Amelie, who served on the fundraising committee for the initiative.

Her fellow committee parent Molly Watsa, mother of Chloe, also enjoyed the sense of camaraderie as they modelled the power of working towards a shared fundraising goal throughout the year. “Branksome does a wonderful job of raising support, but it creates such a unique and powerful sense of community when parents themselves also set such a positive example for our children about the importance of community involvement and support.”

The Grade 6 Legacy Fund is the culminating project in values first learned at the JK level–supporting people who need it. For Junior School student leaders, the full year has been filled with opportunities to model leadership, including, as always, each student choosing books for the SEL reading nook in the Junior School Atrium. This year, for the external recipient of duplicate copies, the girls decided on Ronald McDonald House, associated with SickKids.

With gratitude to the entire Grade 6 Legacy Fund Committee (back row, left to right): Heather Cooper (Nelly, Grade 6), Sholeh Popatia (Hannah, Grade 6; Leila, Grade 9; Amelia, Grade 3), Alaa Halem Matar (Maya, Grade 6; Maria, Grade 2), Elizabeth Denham (Marlowe, Grade 6; Everleigh, Grade 8); (front row, left to right) Molly Watsa (Chloe, Grade 6), Aida Schwan-von Brasch (Amelie, Grade 6).

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Thank you for removing financial barriers to provide talented students, regardless of their economic situation, access to a Branksome Hall education.

Financial Assistance amplifies our commitment to open our doors to diverse and promising students, regardless of their financial situation, enriching the learning environment for all with a range of perspectives and talents. Thanks to the efforts of our Reunion 2024 classes and our 2024 Graduating Class for allowing deserving students to fulfill their promise and dreams.

GRADUATING YEAR CLASS GENEROSITY

Class of 2024 Over-Achieved on Giving

As is tradition, efforts to fundraise collectively as a generous goodbye was part of the Graduating Year experience. The Class of 2024 raised a total of $81,523 towards the GY Bursary, far surpassing its original goal of $50,000. Thank you to all who joined in to cement the class legacy while forging a path for future students to achieve their own successes. As part of the effort, when students paid for their prom tickets in January, the GYs agreed that any money leftover from that account would be donated to the Class of 2024 Bursary, eventually totalling $5,000. The prom itself was a first-ever, and the Branksome Hall Parents’ Associations’ generous donations to the prom made this contribution of $5,000 possible.

Recognition and our gratitude are in order for those GY Class parents who led this collective effort: Michael Gans and Nancy Wittman (Leah); Caroline and Chris Newall (Madee); and Robin and James Porter (Jamie).

I’m here to provide students without the means to pay tuition fees to access the opportunities of a Branksome education.

REUNION REPPING! REUNION GIVING

What a reunion year! We had 340 alums come back to school for Reunion 2024 and two days of celebration, May 31 to June 1. While it was our 4s’ and 9s’ time for hugs, laughter and catching up, it’s always a special tradition to enrich the fun with some meaningful fundraising efforts. And what a success it was, with $21,737 in total raised to support our Annual Fund priorities. A special shoutout is for the Class of ’04, which stole the show with the highest attendance rate, with more than half of its alums coming out to celebrate their 20th reunion.

Reunion Class Rep Meg BUSH Jansen’04 explains why her class shares such a special connection and why giving back remains so meaningful to this class after two decades apart:

Our 20-year reunion was a very special cycle. During previous reunions, we were living abroad, building our careers, getting married and having babies. This year was a moment to come together and reconnect. Many of our classmates found themselves back home–from Western Canada, New York, the U.K. The fundraising effort was about honouring our time together at Branksome Hall that has kept us bonded, even decades later. While the school partnered with us, we owned this initiative because it was our time to give back; we were joined together by our belief in the school and the benefit of our experience. Now my daughter, Laine’37, is at Branksome, and I know she will graduate with all the confidence, fearlessness and talents Branksome gave us to make our way in the world. The Class of ’04 is very much still ‘all in’ on Branksome.

(Laine, SK)

OUR COMMUNITY BUILDERS

Stepping up, leaning in and demonstrating excellence in engagement is what you all do best. We are so appreciative of your time and profound commitment to our values of Sense of Community and Making a Difference. As our school champions, you raised participation rates across so many initiatives, elevated spirit and enthusiasm in so many ways, and brought us all together to create a sense of collective ownership of our school community. We couldn’t do it without you.

Established in 2004, the Branksome Hall Foundation manages Branksome’s endowment assets—valued at $26.31 million in 2023–24.

The Foundation’s holdings are held and invested, with a disbursement provided to the school each year for priority projects and programming. Endowment income supports Student Financial Assistance, capital improvements, facilities maintenance, curriculum and program enhancement such as Arts, Athletics and Music, and school prizes and awards. We are grateful to our independent, volunteer board of trustees who oversee the Foundation and serve as judicious stewards of its resources. They are guided by the important trust placed in them by Foundation donors.

The Foundation’s holdings are held and invested, with a disbursement provided to the school each year. In 2023–24, that disbursement was 5 per cent and will remain at that level in 2024–25. To protect the endowment’s principal, any additional earnings above the disbursement are reinvested.

have such great respect for the school and am inspired to keep giving because it offers so much and gives students such an incredible background. It’s such a well-rounded education. ended up becoming a teacher myself, at Dixon Grove Junior Middle School in Etobicoke. I have such wonderful memories of all the special ceremonies, like Installation, and of singing in various music festivals. And I cherished the school’s Scottish heritage. My brother became a pipe major, representing police forces across Canada.

Denise HINCHCLIFFE Carre’62 has been giving to Branksome Hall for 40 years.

Denise HINCHCLIFFE Carre’62 went to Branxholme Castle [Branksome Hall’s namesake] in Scotland this summer with her husband, Eric, and daughter Laura. She was there on June 7, which is the same date she graduated from Branksome Hall in 1962!

Our family has such a long history with the school. We’ve been giving for 41 years and I don’t want that to ever stop. I want our name to be continually associated with Branksome Hall and I want my children to see how the Sandra BOLTÉ’73 & John L. Burns Endowed Fund will continue to benefit students. When I redid my will, I wanted to leave a planned gift to the school because it sends so many outstanding women into the world. My lawyer had to bring out a Kleenex when I was talking about this incredible legacy my father started. He felt so deeply about volunteering and giving back to the community. Dad instilled the importance of this in me and my children, Stephen and Andrea. He was a role model for us. I am so grateful that the Bolté Family will always be a part of Branksome Hall through this endowed fund.

The Sandra BOLTÉ’73 & John L. Burns Endowed Fund was established in 2016 by Sandra’s children Stephen Amell and Andrea AMELL Rees’03. Her mother, Diana BECK Bolté’46, and her father, Auguste, were longtime loyal donors and volunteers. Sandra retired in 2022, having worked at Branksome since 1991, most recently as the Senior & Middle School Coordinator.

With a gift to Branksome Hall in their estate planning, these community members are deeply committed to investing in future generations of Branksome students. We thank those donors for whom a planned gift is a personally meaningful way of committing to our long-term vitality and success. We acknowledge our 10 Elm Society members, including those who choose to remain anonymous, for their foresight and generosity.
