Well Jack Frost has reached our house and told us it is indeed winter. It’s funny though, one day I’m reaching for the merino cardi, and the next I’m wearing short sleeves and sandals! I can always tell winter is here not so much because of the weather, rather the fact half the household starts sniffing and coughing and complaining about the tissue box running out of tissues. This month we’ve got some great tips to try beat those winter ills and chills – turn to page 16 for more information. Coughs and colds are the bleak side of winter…but I have to say, putting on the heating and closing the curtains in the living room for the first time in months was cosy, and I quite liked it. It even prompted me to put a lamb roast in the oven! I quite like winter cooking – slow and easy as a cold old afternoon turns into darkness…and there’s always something left over for a good sammie the next day. The giveaway this month is a DSLR camera. There’s nothing like having the ‘real thing’ and looking like a pro behind the lens. Turn to the back cover for more information and how to be in to win. Hibernate indoors and catch you soon!

THE FACTS ABOUT ASTHMA New Zealand has one of the highest rates of asthma in the world ranking second only to the UK. It’s still not clear why the prevalence is so high but possible factors include; diet, climate, immunisation rates and economic conditions. What is known is that it hits New Zealand hard, with one in nine adults, and one in seven children taking medication for asthma. We turned to the Asthma Foundation for some facts and figures about asthma.

DID YOU KNOW: • Over 500,000 New Zealanders take asthma medication • Prevalence of asthma was higher for the most deprived in New Zealand • In New Zealand it costs about $1,200 per day to treat a child in hospital for asthma • In 2013 asthma was responsible for 7,400 hospitalisations • People still die from asthma, with 69 deaths in 2011

THE BURDEN OF ASTHMA CAN BE REDUCED Many people do not have optimal control of their asthma – often because they don’t know that better control is possible, or because of barriers to accessing primary health care, the Asthma Foundation says. For good asthma control it is important to keep using your medication as prescribed; to visit your health team regularly and to get an asthma management plan. Asthma management plans should be filled out with a health professional, they are designed to help manage asthma and recognise when it is deteriorating before it gets to an emergency situation.

When you need to keep up,

you don’t want muscle or neck pain Whether you’re an All Black or a supermum, when you need to keep up with the team, the last thing you want is muscle or neck pain. When it strikes, try Voltaren® Emulgel®. It is an anti-inflammatory rub for muscle and joint pain associated with acute soft tissue injuries. Unlike heat rubs that mask pain, Voltaren® Emulgel® penetrates the skin to the underlying tissues and treats the cause of inflammation. It’s proven to deliver a triple benefit. It relieves pain, treats inflammation, and helps get you moving sooner*. The unique formulation also has a cooling effect with no strong odours and is easy to rub in. That’s how it can help keep the All Blacks moving, as well as you. 6

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO GET INJURED • In the first 48-72 hours following an injury, rest and apply ice packs to the affected area. • After this initial period, it’s important to get moving again, because inactivity can cause stiffness, limit mobility and actually prolong the pain.

• If appropriate, compression bandages and elevating the affected limb can also limit bruising and swelling. • Gentle exercise and physical manipulation such as physiotherapy may help you feel better. Using an anti-inflammatory gel such as Voltaren® Emulgel® can also help you keep moving.

Build a strong immunity this winter Having a strong immune system is actually a science, especially when it comes to Vitamin C. The longer it’s in your system, the more your immune defences will be supported over winter

8

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

THE BETTER VITAMIN C We all need Vitamin C – it supports our immunity, eyes, skin, teeth and bones. As a powerful antioxidant, it supports the fight against ills and chills. You can get Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables or a vitamin supplement, but hanging on to all that goodness is the hard part. Ordinary Vitamin C supplements break down quickly in the body and are flushed out fast, so often after just two hours, all that Vitamin C is gone.

ESTER-C® BENEFITS • Faster absorption • 24-hour immune support • Gentle on the stomach, non-acidic.

That’s why Ester-C® from Nutra-Life® is the better Vitamin C. Unlike ordinary Vitamin C, which only lasts a few hours in your system, Ester-C® lasts 24. And, while Ester-C® 1500mg is one of the most potent* Vitamin Cs on the shelf, the non-acidic formula makes it gentle on the stomach. It’s all in the science. Thanks to the unique way it is made, Ester-C® is rapidly absorbed by your white blood cells and helps with around-the-clock immune support.

Only in pharmacies and health food stores *in tablet format Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional. Got asthma? Rather be symptom free? If you have asthma you might already be using an orange preventer. However, if you find you are reaching for your blue reliever to ease symptoms most days, ask your doctor about the purple Seretide Accuhaler. It’s easy to use – a dose counter tells you how much is left – and, importantly, Seretide is so good at treating asthma, you might not get symptoms in the first place.1,2 With Seretide you can have five symptom-free days per week, allowing you to get on with the activities you enjoy.1,2

10

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

IS SERETIDE RIGHT FOR YOU? Your doctor is the best person to talk to about your asthma control. The most important thing is to let them know what symptoms you’re experiencing and how often you’re having them. You could also visit www.seretide.co.nz where you’ll find FAQs, as well as tips around nutrition, exercise and daily living with asthma.

ASK YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT FULLY FUNDED6 SERETIDE – THE PURPLE INHALER

LEAVING SYMPTOMS BEHIND In a major New Zealand asthma study, 81% of people thought their asthma was well controlled, yet three-quarters were using their blue reliever at least once daily and the remainder were taking at least 3-4 puffs a day.3 In short, most people overestimated their level of asthma control. The fact is, if you’re using your reliever more than twice a week, chances are your asthma is not as good as it could be.4

HOW SERETIDE WORKS Seretide's dual action formula is so good at treating asthma, it can actually help prevent symptoms in the first place. As a result you could have symptom-free days for most of the year.5

Chesty cough... Is cough liquid the only answer? The most common way to relieve a chesty cough and congestion is with a liquid. But it might not be the most convenient. Winter colds and flu bring a range of uncomfortable symptoms, but none can be as lingering as a phlegmy or chesty cough.

WHY DOES A CHESTY COUGH LINGER? When you get a cold or flu, mucus can increase. Excess mucus becomes congealed, thicker, and harder to move through your respiratory system. It can result in a wet cough, wheezing and shortness of breath. Treatment should both thin and loosen mucus in the chest to help clear the airways and relieve symptoms. 14

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

ARE COUGH LIQUIDS THE ANSWER? If you’ve tried to clear chest congestion with a liquid, you’ll know the routine. You often have to take liquid formulations multiple times during the day especially when symptoms persist. But when life is busy and you’re on the move, re-dosing can be a hassle. Liquids are not easily portable and it can be difficult to measure the correct dose every time. Well there is an easier way: One Mucinex Maximum Strength tablet will give fast, effective and long-lasting relief for 12 hours. That means uninterrupted relief through the day.

WINTER 101

Simple steps to help keep you smiling through the colder months Gone are the long, hot days of summer. As we head into the colder months, the risk of getting sick may be on your mind, with good reason. Each year young children get around six to eight colds and adults pick up between two and four. More worryingly, GPs had around 116,000 flu-related consultations last year, and 1500 people were treated in hospital. Up to 500 people die of flu-related illnesses each year. That’s why, if you haven’t already had your flu jab, it’s important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about it. It’s not always easy to determine if you have a cold or the flu, but know the difference may help bring a quicker end to your symptoms. The common cold is a respiratory infection and the leading cause of doctor’s office visits. This ailment usually resolves quickly but symptoms can last for weeks. Unlike the flu, these symptoms are mild and probably won’t lead to any serious health complications. Influenza is also an upper respiratory infection but can develop into a more serious condition such as pneumonia. Seasonal flu is caused by the influenza A, B and C viruses and active strains vary from year to year. Here are our tips to stay in top form this winter and keep those ills and chills at bay.

1. DO I REALLY NEED A FLU JAB? Yes, influenza can affect anyone, no matter how fit, and people die from it. Contact with the flu virus is almost unavoidable and can be dangerous particularly if you suffer from asthma, diabetes or have another ongoing medical condition. To maintain the most effective protection against influenza, annual immunisation is required. The flu jab is free for qualifying patients. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

16

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

2. HYDRATE We know drinking plenty of water is important for us and this is one of the reasons why. Nose mucous is a key barrier to keep germs at bay. But dry, crusty mucous is not as effective as a well-lubricated nose. So keep up the H2O this winter.

3. WRAP UP When the body has to concentrate on shivering and raising the temperature, it can’t focus on warding off germs. Keeping warm, with attention to gloves, a hat and shoes is important. Of course, in New Zealand we can have fourseasons in one day, so layer up.

familyhealthdiary.co.nz

17

4. HAND-WASHING – ARE YOU DOING IT RIGHT? Germs can spread easily, so hand washing is one of the best ways to keep the numbers down during winter. The World Health Organization says washing hands properly takes time, about as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday! Because germs love damp surfaces, drying hands properly may be just as important as washing them. Hand sanitisers are convenient if you are out and about

5. SHAKE IT OFF We’ve heard it a million times – exercise is important for our health. The sad reality is many of us find it hard to fit in time to go to the gym or run around the field. This is when incidental exercise can be helpful. Jump off at an earlier bus-stop so you have to walk a wee bit further, take the stairs, dance with your kids, all of this counts to your overall daily exercise.

6. ME TIME Stress is a major factor for depressing your immune system, so it’s important to unwind. Great ways to de-stress include yoga and meditation. If this doesn’t sound like you, simply try taking 10 minutes each day to focus on slowing your breathing and relaxing each muscle.

18

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

7. SERVE UP THE CARBS (IN MODERATION): A balanced diet rich in fresh, seasonal fruit and veges will help improve overall health. And, while there may be a temptation to fill up on comfort food during the cold, try to remember to keep things in moderation. Serotonin, the body’s mood booster, can decrease as it gets dark, but complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and Omega-3 fatty acids can help bring levels up.

Dark chocolate has also been shown to be a mood enhancer – look for kinds made up of at least 70% cacao.

8. FLICK THE SWITCH Dark days can play a part in dark moods, but research suggests light therapy as a way to boost mood. A light box can be used or, if it’s easier, try take a 30-minute walk in the morning even if it’s cloudy.

9. BATTLING DRY WINTER SKIN Colder weather, heaters and drier air can make dry skin worse. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, here are the top ways to keep skin moisturised: • Close the bathroom door • Limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes • Use warm rather than hot water • Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser • Apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil, but avoid using so much that you see a thick lather • Blot your skin gently dry with a towel • Slather on the moisturizer immediately after drying your skin.

Bupa understands this and offers a way to remain independent, but with peace of mind that help is at hand should it be necessary. A simple way to ensure there is a safety net for people aged 65 years and older living in their own home is to install a Bupa Medical Alarm. 20

Family Health Diary Winter 2015

John never thought of installing a medical alarm, but did so to please his daughter. “I’ve always done things my way, I’m not the type to make a fuss,” John says. However, he soon discovered the importance of help at hand when the alarm ended up saving his life.

“I am so grateful for the help from Bupa. They stayed on the phone with me and kept me calm until help arrived. I hate to think what could’ve happened if I hadn’t have my alarm,” John says.

CHOOSE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU Bupa Medical Alarms are different. Clients have the freedom to choose the kind of help they require – whether it be from a neighbour, friend, family member, police, fire service or ambulance.

Conjunctivitis – stop the spread, easily Applying eye treatments up to five times a day can be tricky. But it’s important to keep on top of treatment as conjunctivitis is contagious. Over-the-counter conjunctivitis treatments need applying up to five times a day. Applying eye drops can be fiddly at any age so the fewer times a day you need to do it, the better. Fortunately one uniquely formulated product, available on prescription from your doctor, only needs to be used twice a day. It’s called Fucithalmic® and now it’s fully funded.

Designed for both adults and children, its ease of use will be welcome relief for both parents and little ones.

CONVENIENT FOR ALL THE FAMILY Its convenience means Fucithalmic® fits better around family commitments, such as work, school, preschool and daycare. For busy parents, being able to apply eye drops in just the morning and evening means it’s easier to follow through with treatment.

CONJUNCTIVITIS – A COMMON PROBLEM You may know conjunctivitis as ‘pink eye’ or ‘red eye’. Common symptoms include redness, itching, swelling of the eyelids and a discharge that may cause the lids and lashes to be matted together in the mornings. There can be a scratchy feeling, pain with bright light, or tearing. Conjunctivitis affects approximately 12% of New Zealand’s population and peaks from winter through to springtime. The three most common ways you can get it is through an allergic reaction, from bacteria, or a virus.

Haemorrhoids… Half of us will get them at some point It may be a tricky subject, but haemorrhoids are so common, half of us will get them at some point. And both men and women are affected. SO WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY? Despite the notoriety, there’s often a lack of understanding about haemorrhoids. Also known as piles, they are inflamed veins in the region of the anus, caused by pressure. They can be internal or external, and lead to the following: • Pain and itching • Blood on toilet paper, in stools and the toilet bowl • Painful swelling or hard lumps.

They can be painful, stubborn, and in many cases they can keep coming back. But if you think there’s not much more you can do other than ‘put up’ with them, then think again. What can really make the difference is seeing your doctor: the expert who can also prescribe an expert treatment.

Getting a flu shot? Ask about getting the Shingles vaccine at the same time.

If you’ve ever had chickenpox, the Shingles virus is already inside you. About one in three people will get Shingles in their lifetime. If you want to help prevent Shingles ask your doctor or vaccinating pharmacist about ZOSTAVAX, the Shingles vaccine. And ask about getting ZOSTAVAX at the same time you get your flu shot. Shingles is unpredictable; it can strike at any time but we cannot predict who will get it, how painful it will be or how long the pain will last. But we do know that about one in three people will get Shingles in their lifetime, and those over 50 are more at risk.

But, there is a way to help prevent Shingles. ZOSTAVAX, the Shingles vaccine, is a single dose vaccine that can help reduce your risk of Shingles, and its associated pain. So when you visit your GP or vaccinating pharmacist to get your flu vaccine, ask about getting ZOSTAVAX.

SYMPTOMS OF SHINGLES Shingles can appear as a painful, blistering rash, that can last weeks. The rash forms where the nerves from the spinal cord connect with the skin. This area is called a dermatome. Usually the rash will appear along a dermatome located on one side of the body. Because the nerves along the path become inflamed, Shingles can be very painful. Pain that lasts after the rash has healed is called post herpetic neuralgia (PHN). As you get older the risk of developing PHN increases. Patients have described PHN as burning, throbbing, stabbing or shooting pain. This pain can last months, even years.

ZOSTAVAX – THE SHINGLES VACCINE ZOSTAVAX is a vaccine to help protect you against Shingles and its associated acute and chronic pain. You must be 50 years or older to be vaccinated with ZOSTAVAX.

HOW TO GET ZOSTAVAX ZOSTAVAX is available from your doctor, and some pharmacists. And yes, you can get it at the same time as the flu vaccine. ZOSTAVAX is not funded, so charges will apply.

Ask your doctor or vaccinating pharmacist about the Shingles vaccine THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE USING ZOSTAVAX (zoster virus vaccine, live) 19,400 PFU as 0.65 mL vial for injection: ZOSTAVAX is used in adults 50 years of age and over to help prevent shingles and associated pain. ZOSTAVAX should not be used in people who have a weakened immune system. Common side effects are: headache, localised injection site reactions and pain in the arm or leg. All medicines have risks and benefits and the protective effect of vaccines can vary from person to person. Consult your health professional to see if ZOSTAVAX is right for you. If you have side effects, see your health professional. For additional product information, consult the Consumer Medicine Information, available on request from 0800 500 673, or refer to the Medsafe website www.medsafe.govt.nz. ZOSTAVAX is an unfunded prescription medicine. Ask your health professional the cost of the vaccine and any other medical fees that may apply. Based on data sheet prepared 18/06/2014 .
