Profile of Life Mildred Dunbar Roberts was a shining example of what it means to trust in God, show his love and care for us, and continue to have faith in his amazing plan. Lovingly delivered on April 29, 1929 to Henry Dunbar and Margret (Leese) Dunbar in Savannah, GA, Mildred was an independent force to be reckoned with. In her childhood, her grandmother, Leah Menervah Jenkins, taught Mildred that presentation counts both at home and out in the world; a lesson she would later impress upon her future grandchildren. Contrastingly, you could also find young Mildred playing with her sister Ruby, or out fishing in canals with her brother Percy. When Mildred and Percy went to Alfred E. Beach High School, they both played trumpet in the band and were inseparable. After graduating from high school, Mildred went into nursing school, where she honed her hallmark trait of caring for others. Mildred’s career as a RN and Home Health Aide with the Chatham County Health Department, allowed her to ensure that those who needed someone to nurture them back to health got the care they needed. She went on to be recognized in 2006 by the Coastal Empire Polio Survivor Association for her amazing standard of care during the polio epidemic of the late 1940’s and early 50’s in Savannah. It would be hard to find someone who hasn’t been on the receiving end of her care. From her stepmother Victoria Dunbar, to church members with low blood sugar in the middle of a Sunday service; Mildred was always there with a blood pressure cup,a stethoscope and an eagerness to help. Mildred’s love for her family ran deep. On October 17th, 1960, a beautiful baby girl was brought into the world by way of Mildred and her husband Claude. Mildred named this angelic soul, Celeta, a name she heard on her rounds as a home health aide. Mildred loved the way it sounded and how rare it was, and that name was perfect for the rare jewel her daughter was. Mildred showed her love in as many ways she could. Celeta grew into a kind, creative, smart and fiercely independent woman. She married Lawrence, and they had two children of her own.

Around Brandon and Devin, Mildred transformed into superwoman attending every choral concert, Grandparent’s Day and school play. Devin as a child, bestowed Mildred with the name everyone knows her as, Meme. She took Brandon to so many Senior Ministry meetings at Happy Home Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a long time member, that the other Seniors called him Little Mister Senior Citizen. When God called Celeta home in 2011, Mildred steadied herself by holding on to God’s steady and faithful hand. Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning. That joy came on February 18, 2015; when Devin had her daughter, Skylar. As Mildred held her great-granddaughter, her face beamed with unbridled joy and her soul soared. There were many consistent things about Mildred’s life. In her later years, you could find her sitting doing her Sunday school readings, rooting on a tennis match on TV from her sofa, or on the phone with someone she loved. She loved to talk to her family and friends because they were reminders of how blessed she was. She would sit in awe of all her blessings, and count them one by one. Mildred’s life can not be counted by the people that survive her, rather by the numerous lives she touched. The sheer reach of one woman to impress and effect as many people as she has is a feat. Mildred Dunbar Roberts was called home on November 30, 2020 after 91 years of doing what God put her on this earth to do. Whether you called her Mildred, Little Mil or Meme, she was a master class in what having a little trust and faith in God can do for you. Mildred was welcomed to her heavely home by: Henry Dunbar (Father), Margret Dunbar (Mother), Victoria Dunbar ( Stepmother), Celeta Sadler (Daughter), Ruby Dunbar (Sister), Percy Dunbar (Brother), Moses Tolbert ( Step-brother), Hurbert Tolbert (Step-Brother) Mildred left many behind with cherished memories including; Devin Sadler of Savannah, GA; Brandon Sadler of Brooklyn, NY; Lawrence Sadler of Savannah, GA; Dorothy Soloman of Boston, MA; and Henry and Aileen Champen of Aurora, Il. and countless cousins, godchildren, friends and family.

Happy Tears Though the path ahead might feel unstable, the God I serve, is always able. Holding on to His unchanging hand, for it’s God’s bigger and perfect plan. In this season, our hearts may ache, but God built us to bend, not break. Is it not God who turns the night into day? I trust the bigger picture, so bitter words I’ll not say. Who are we to doubt? For the life we celebrate today, I will shout. Thankful for the love, and care I’ve seen, for all the laughter and the lesssons I’ve gleaned. So whenever you might feel a little low, think of a happy memory and that gift of love will glow. Let yourself smile and if a hard cry is near; remember what Meme always said, “ These are happy tears.”

Acknowledgements The family extends a warm and heartfelt “Thank You” to our family and friends who continue to keep us lifted up in prayer and care as we remeber our beloved Mildred. As we continue to walk the path ahead, we know that you will be there. Special thanks to: Pastor K.E. McNeal and the Happy Home Church Family David L.
