Welcome... Bawtry

– one of Doncaster’s most affluent suburbs - packed with designer boutiques, elegant tea rooms and coffee shops, sophisticated interior shops and a social scene that is stylish, sassy and right on trend. Welcome to the first issue of ‘Visit Bawtry’ – a publication dedicated entirely to what this most sophisticated of towns has to offer to businesses and consumers alike and, with over 120 independent businesses located within the town its offering is diverse and successful. You probably don’t need us to tell you what a great place it is – day or night but we would like to remind you of what it offers beyond a trip to the bank or butchers, or the occasional evening out to your favourite restaurant. Bawtry by day, is visually enticing with elegant shop fronts, tantalising window displays and this summer hanging baskets, kindly donated by property landlords Tomlinsons, adorn every shop within ‘The Courtyard’ - a small shopping area offering bespoke retailers including a wine and whisky shop and contemporary art gallery. Elsewhere, there are other superb floral displays by other businesses including the simply magnificent display at Coco Ice Cocktail Bar. By night, the social side of Bawtry springs to life with a host of places available to grab everything from a pint after work to evening cocktails, or Yorkshire tapas to authentic Japanese Teppenyaki or Tuscan dishes. Recently, the Bawtry Evening Partnership has been formulated to protect visitors to the town each night by providing visual security and assistance, ensuring the reputation of the town as Doncaster’s most exclusive night out is maintained. Provided by Key Security, the night time ambassadors can help with directions, first aid or calling a taxi at the end of the evening if you find yourself stranded. Whilst Bawtry is available for business seven days a week, Sunday is a day where it has sprung to life for shopping and socialising. Many shops are now open and The Crown Hotel – an iconic landmark in the market place – is a great place to enjoy one of the best Sunday lunches for miles around!

Also temporary home to many a celebrity, boy band McFly was one of the most recent guests to enjoy the hotel’s legendary hospitality and signature executive suites. The boys also enjoyed visiting Bawtry Health and Fitness where they were so impressed with the lack of ‘celebrity adoration’ that they felt compelled to comment on how much they had enjoyed being there and were able to just get on with their training. Let’s face it; there are so many celebs in Bawtry these days such as Boyzone, Peter Andre and local hero Howard Webb football referee, that we barely bat an eyelid!! 2011 is ‘Happy Birthday’ for a few Bawtry businesses. The Turnpike and Robinsons celebrate 25 years in business and China Rose an admirable 20 years. So, in our inaugural ‘Visit Bawtry’, we wish you all happy times as you discover just what Bawtry has to offer. And don’t forget to check out ‘Visit Bawtry’ on twitter for the latest happenings, oh, and don’t believe everything you read about parking!

Brilliant Bawtry

As more and more businesses discover the merits of being located in Bawtry, occupation of vacant premises is burgeoning. When you really dissect what the town has to offer it is amazing that within 120 businesses you can pretty much get everything that you need for everyday life and for those special moments. We take a look at what’s going on both within the business plans, and out of them, in a few well known Bawtry businesses.

HAIR STYLE

In the New Year, The Laser Hair Clinic, located within Bliss Travel and Beauty on Swan Street, opened its doors. It offers revolutionary treatments from America that can re generate hair growth providing the hair follicle is alive. With a client base that is already hugely impressed with the results that can be achieved, proprietors Lesley and Sandra are offering a free initial consultation. Helping you to keep your head up is Harrington’s of Bawtry located on Church Walk. A traditional barbers and beauty salon everyone, from hardened bricklayers to executive men, are hooked on the Harringtons experience. Congratulations to Jo and staff at The Head Office on Dower House Square completing their first 12 successful months in business. Over at the Elite Hair Salon, young Ashley is now a fully fledged stylist and all the staff are excited by the arrival of the new Macadamia hair products which protect and nourish hair wonderfully. Perhaps the best hair extensions available, Balmain, continue to be hugely popular as well as their range of new fantastic hair pieces too. Oh, and whilst you’re there don’t forget to check out Englishman’s Castle, next door, for the latest additions which feature tempting jewellery, gifts and home furnishings.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

If the outdoor life is more for you ‘Brookes of Bawtry’ is a sister company to the iconic Brookes in Doncaster and supplies a great range of labels to keep you warm, dry and stylish. Managed by the fifth generation of the same family, they stock iconic brands such as Joules.

IMPRESSIVE INTERIORS

Womacks, whose windows are now the envy of shop keepers everywhere, saw a new owner take over the reins in November. Acclaimed interior designer David Womack is bringing his signature style to Bawtry and you are all loving it! Further down the street, Living Interiors and Utopia Fireplaces have undergone a bit of a refit and is definitely worth a visit, as is Limited 2 Art, a fantastic contemporary art gallery who was recently featured on BBC3’s ‘ Mad about the House’ which gave Bawtry its five minutes of fame, even though they filmed for hours and hours. The gallery also hosts many famous artists such as Todd White, Caroline Shotton, Peter Smith and Paul Kenton so it is worth registering for their newsletters, if you are an art enthusiast.

NAILED ON! Moving from heads to toes (and fingers) Clare O’Malley, who previously worked for Robinsons for over 10 years, has now started a new venture quite literally in their back yard! Clare is now based at Perfect 10 and offers the latest in nail treatments and technologies including Shellac Nails, Bio Scuplture Gels and Minx Nail Art.

DISTANT SHORES When you tire of your own interior, they say a change is as good as a rest, so a holiday may be just what you need. Bawtry Travel has now relocated to Branton to offer a bespoke service to old and new client’s, recognising that people generally tend to source and book holidays over the phone and internet rather than visiting a travel agent. And, to make arranging your travel plans really easy, owner Kath is offering a ‘Travel Surgery, at The Crown Hotel the last Friday of every month between 2-4pm.

FANTASTIC FASHION Should you fancy treating yourself to a new outfit you could always go to Voulez-Vouz located in the Courtyard. Also new to The Courtyard is Devernois, a fantastic French clothing boutique, perfect for a stylish treat. Yasmine of Bawtry at Dower Square established in 1974 by Annette, has recently completed the newly extended premises. New labels have been sourced from the UK and the Continent to enhance the Yasmine brand portfolio.

Joined by daughter Emma, the extended Yasmine has a dedicated studio for mother-of-the-bride and special occassionwear.

ALL WRAPPED UP!

Ample Parking in Bawtry There is ample Pay & Display Parking in Bawtry, it’s just 60p per hour! Plus it’s free on Sundays and evenings after 8pm.

ON THE MOVE

Sometimes a holiday, or complete interior re-design, is just not enough to satisfy those itchy feet. If you’re on the move visit the new owners and premises of Fine & Country, who will be happy to provide you with a market appraisal for your property and find you a new one.

For indulgent girly treats, visit ‘The Gift Box’ opened by Bev Soper, who has been a familiar face in Bawtry for over nine years. As well as offering some unusual little girlie gifts Bev offers a superb gift wrapping service for all your presents, whether you buy from her or not! It’s a great way to make any gift look extra special!

Ah, where to start here? We are loving the new premises of The Town House Tea Rooms & Restaurant who offer a great place for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. It is now open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 6.30pm and the menu they offer is far from that of a tea room! Pick up a menu next time you visit for a well earned cappuccino. The fabulous Crown Hotel had a super stylish bar refurb earlier this year - it really is the place to see and be seen for either drinks or dinner as is the fantastic Zinis Italian Restaurant, whose new Courtyard outside bar is going to be just perfect this summer! Coco Ice bar is proving to be hugely popular. Salsa Classes and Sunday afternoon jazz sessions will be a real Zinis Restaurant & success, as is Sam Martin, Wine Bar Head of Training and Bar Manager, who is a self confessed Rum geek! Whilst they are known for their cocktails, Peroni and Prosecco girls are available all night ,to save you queuing at the bar. Seems they’ve thought of everything! Coffee shops are always popular and Pure Coffee and Pure Books offers something that little bit different. You can enjoy delicious coffee, tea, snacks and light bites in Upstairs at Pure Coffee premises which are deceptively spacious, and on the first floor there is a great little bookshop. On a sunny day, buy yourself a book and settle on The Courtyard – just perfect! And, whilst not strictly in Bawtry, we and half of the surrounding area, have fallen in love with the Mayflower Bar and Eatery located in Austerfield. Great food, great service, great hospitality, guest beers, a decadent wine list and friendly service makes it a simply lovely place. And, with four boutique suites having recently been opened, you can even rest your head after a special occasion. Bawtry is certainly on the up – make sure you are part of it!

...it’s all here!

If you spend over £200 in one transaction in May 2011 at Robinsons Of Bawtry you will receive a complimentary express manicure or wash & style at Harringtons.

Fueling an Obsession What is it about our obsession with cars? Why do they depict our status and success so succinctly? If you are one of the many people who like to travel in style, then we are going to reveal to you one of Doncaster’s best kept automotive secrets, where car buying is a whole new experience. Portland Autos is owned by Clive Watson and has a stock list that reads like a wish list for any car enthusiast! It’s not unusual to see a stunning Ferrari or a gleaming Range Rover parked in front of his show room doors, or something equally eye catching. At the moment an amazing Mercedes SLS tops the line up at £162,500, and with just 1,000 miles on the clock, is quite simply fantastic! Arriving at the showroom, located in the four acre grounds of his home where Milly the dog and a handful of chickens roam freely, you can see immediately that this is one buying experience you’re going to enjoy. Specialising in 4 x 4’s, executive, prestige and sports cars Clive can offer finance solutions and part exchange and this, combined with his honest advice, means that over 50 per cent of his business is repeat – a real testament to the complete service that Portland of Bawtry offers.

6

MODEST BEGINNINGS... Always a car enthusiast, the story started 32 years ago when after a brief tussle with employment at International Harvester’s and The Coal Board, Clive decided that self employed was the way for him and his car business was created. From modest beginnings Clive’s story is one of success based on exemplary customer service and products that attract customers from throughout the UK and the globe with his cars being exported to New Zealand, Malta, Cyprus and most recently Mozambique! With a simplistic buying process entirely managed by Clive, it is the perfect solution particularly for busy executives who are short on time but want premium quality cars and premium service. Whilst the business enjoys successful longevity and prides itself on good old fashioned Yorkshire service, Portland of Bawtry has embraced technology so that all of its sales are driven thorough its impressive website. All of the cars have at least twenty images featured on the website, together with finance details and detailed profiles. It all adds to the Portland experience - one where when you go to see the car, you have already pretty much made up your mind to buy.

Business Spotlight ...it’s all here!

“Any strong business should have a web presence these days,” commented Clive. “For us, we recognised that people, who are in the market for a new car will more often than not start their search on the internet and then choose just a handful of cars to go and view. It beats trailing around car show rooms on a Saturday afternoon and, the beauty of buying from us, is that we are not brand specific.” With around 80 cars at the showroom, featuring premium brands such as Bentley, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche and a price range that may tip £150,000 or come in at just a few thousand, there is something to suit many tastes and budgets.

runner who can often be seen along Great North Road coaching others to reach their goals. Sons Adam and James are both at University. James is currently travelling Europe (whilst his girlfriend Portia works on Saturdays at Robinsons). Not surprisingly both boys are interested in cars but are unsure whether they will follow in their father’s footsteps at the moment! “I feel privileged to have such a well respected business and to have a career doing what I truly love,” commented Clive. “Buying cars, new or used, can often be a very stressful and time consuming process for the client and it was this element that I wanted to remove. If you buy from us at Portland of Bawtry, we think you’ll discover that car buying can be uncomplicated and enjoyable – why not put us to the test?”

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY... A glance at the stock held at Portlands. Clive is supported by sales adviser James Barthorpe, who Clive first met when he coached Branton Juniors Football club where James played. Aged 21, James gained experience in the industry at a local dealership before moving to develop his career further under Clive’s expert guidance. Also part of the team are father and son, Barry and Matt, car preparation technicians who are master’s at getting that showroom look on any car and have worked there for over twelve Great North Road, Bawtry, Doncaster, DN10 6DF years. Viewing is by appointment only. Many of you may already be familiar with Portland of Bawtry and know that Clive’s wife Maggi is a marathon

The finer things in life...

Saturday 5th March saw a new era dawn on one of Bawtry’s most individual and eclectic social experiences – Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar. The fantastic blueprint that had been created by previous owners has been developed and extended by new owners Russell and Wendy Jones who, together with resident Chef Kevin Bracha, have made Caviars even better than before. A new menu, bar area and extensive wine list means that Caviars Restaurant and Wine Bar is a great place to enjoy lunch, dinner, or a glass or two of wine whenever the mood takes you. Delicious dishes, which change frequently, utilise seasonal and local produce to create a menu that is truly mouth watering. The sumptuous and stylish interior is pleasantly welcoming but sophisticated, providing an individual drinking and dining experience, quite different from other places within the town. A small wine bar is perfect for drinks and tapas, or for pre dinner drinks for those that manage to secure a table in the intimate restaurant on its busy weekend nights. A fantastic wine list will delight even the most dedicated oenophile and those that just enjoy a tipple or two. Caviars of Bawtry is a great place to enjoy the finer things in life - great food, great wine, great service and great company. Forget your day and enjoy your evening at Caviars Restaurant & Wine Bar Caviars of Bawtry.

Business Spotlight

Bawtry Natural Health ‘You are what you eat’ or so the saying goes. Worth pondering for a moment or two, before we tell you why what you are putting in your body might not be doing you much good at all. Although food intolerance testing has been available at Bawtry Natural Health and Therapy Centre for many years now, the arrival of the latest piece of diagnostic testing equipment from America (The Asrya) has resulted in even more precise results through a more simplistic process. By holding two copper probes, the results are available in minutes allowing speedy and accurate diagnosis of intolerances which may cause other health problems. It can test for deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, hormones, foods and other sensitivities and environmental contra-indicators that can manifest themselves in a whole host of health complaints that includes weight gain, insomnia, depression and skin complaints. “We offer a huge range of service and products from our shop in Bawtry and food intolerance testing is just one way in which we can help clients improve their overall health,” commented Helen Thomson proprietor Bawtry Natural Health and Therapy Centre. “Many people suffer complaints that can be attributed to diet or food allergies and we are keen to help people treat any health problems in the most natural way possible.” All the team at Robinsons took part in the test which normally costs £80. Thankfully, no startling discoveries were made, although interestingly all showed signs of dehydration a very common discovery which can impede concentration and mental agility amongst other side effects. In addition to the well stocked shop that offers a range of health foods, vitamins, supplements and natural beauty products, there are two treatments rooms located on the first floor where health professionals offer a range of holistic treatments. “Most of the practioners have worked with me for 10 years now and they can provide a range of therapies to alleviate or prevent health issues,” said Helen. “Sue, Victoria, Noah, Mel, Kenny, Claire, Margaret and Julie offer a full complement of treatments including Reiki, acupuncture,

colonic hydrotherapy, counselling, foot care and Osteopathy, all of which play a major part in treatment, management and rehabilitation of conditions.” The centre, which has been established for over 10 years, has gained a fantastic reputation for the wealth of treatments and products they offer, the knowledge that the staff have and their ability to do everything with a smile! “So many people have Derek eagerly awaiting his results discovered that there is an alternative to medication in many instances and we enjoy helping people discover how to feel their best,” concluded Helen. “We are proud to be an independent specialist and the launch of our new website www.bawtrynaturalhealth.co.uk means you can now buy online and also access lots of information too.” Whether you have an ongoing health complaint, have niggling aches and pains, or perhaps just want to take better care of yourself, Bawtry Natural Health and Therapy Centre will, most probably, be the perfect place to put a spring back in your step.
