Did You Know? Waco Economy Continues To Break Records Home construc,on and home sales paced the Greater Waco economy in February, and revised figures from the Texas Workforce Commission show the area created 2,900 jobs between February of last year and this year, according to a monthly economic snapshot produced by Amarillo-based economist Karr Ingham. Ingham said the workforce commission each year analyzes employment data and makes revisions to the monthly es,mates it made throughout the year when necessary. With that process completed, Ingham said, the monthly average for the Waco Metropolitan Sta,s,cal Area, which includes McLennan and Falls coun,es, was revised upward by nearly 1,000 total jobs on average for 2016. Ingham said employment grew at a 2.7 percent monthly average applying the revised figures, compared to 2.2 percent per original es,mates. These changes raised the values for Ingham’s Greater Waco Economic Index, which he prepares for the First Na,onal Bank of Central Texas and the Tribune-Herald. He uses data da,ng to the year 2000 and considers factors including spending, employment, construc,on, vehicle sales and lodging revenue. Though Ingham crunches the numbers and prepares a report, his findings typically are presented to a sampling of local business leaders by Whitney Richter, manager of business development and marke,ng for the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce. However, Ingham on Wednesday visited First Na,onal Bank of Central Texas to discuss his methodology and to join Richter in discussing the February results during a 90-minute session. “This area has seen quite a post-recession economic recovery that has lasted for about 60 months,” Ingham said. Extraco Events Center and Heart O' Texas Fairgrounds Expansion Project Early vo,ng for the May 6 elec,on starts in a liZle more than a week, and McLennan County residents have a chance Thursday to learn more about a ballot measure for a new tax that would support a $34.4 million overhaul of the Extraco Events Center. Extraco Events Center officials will host a “Sip & See” at 5:30 p.m. at The Backyard, 511 S. Eighth St. They will give a short presenta,on to explain a referendum on a proposed new tax on hotel stays and car rentals. Organizers say the renova,ons supported by the tax would put the Heart Of Texas Fairgrounds at a compe,,ve advantage over like-size ci,es in Texas, allowing mul,ple venues to operate at the same ,me. Proposed work at the 60-acre site off Bosque Boulevard includes building an 80,000-square-foot, state-of-theart mul,purpose center that would connect to the exis,ng coliseum. The proposi,on includes a 2 percent hotel occupancy tax and a 5 percent tax on short-term car rentals. Organizers hope to see a crowd of 300 as they share how money would be collected and where it will go, said Charva Ingram, marke,ng director for the HOT Fair & Rodeo. A poli,cal ac,on commiZee formed to support the ballot measure and proposed expansion will have members on hand to answer ques,ons. “The big thing for us is we want people to vote and be informed on what they are vo,ng for,” she said. People who stay in hotels or rent vehicles in the county, primarily people from outside the county, will pay the tax, said Wes Allison, Extraco Events Center president and CEO. Allison has said a Baylor University study projects improvements to the fairgrounds could boost its economic impact from $47 million to $60 million. Inside Waco's Multi-Million Dollar Downtown Development Project Waco, Texas, a city smack dab in the middle of the Lonestar State, famous for its storied history, beloved Baylor Bears, and of course, Chip and Joanna Gaines. However, the face of the city is changing like never before. Thanks in part to a mul,million dollar downtown revitaliza,on project, Waco Texas is looking to cement its place as a marquee des,na,on. The project was first proposed to the city council this past October, and for Paris Rutherford, Principal at Catalyst Urban Development, the Dallas based company behind the project, Waco offers a unique opportunity. "Everything that we do is customized; its about the place we are in. This is a very big investment, it's on a scale that Waco hasn't seen yet." He says. The project is broken down into three phases. The first will focus on adding 294 lol apartments and more than 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space to an already bustling waterfront area, while also transforming the popular downtown farmers market. Waco mayor Kyle Deaver insists that despite a hely price tag, this project is absolutely crucial for the city to con,nue to move in the right direc,on. "I think we are already experiencing unprecedented growth in tourism and this can only help." That momentum is thanks in a large part to the success of the Magnolia markets, a tourist des,na,on that brings in people from across the country daily. City Manager Dale Fissler says Magnolia will serve as a good center point for the project to build around.

Waco Founder's Lions Club Celebrates 101 Continuous Years of Service The Waco Founder’s Lions Club in a few days will celebrate its 101st anniversary, which makes it the oldest con,nually opera,ng Lions Club in the world. The Waco Founder’s club was organized in 1916, along with 22 others that were the original Lions clubs, but Waco club is the only one of those original clubs that never has suspended ac,vity. “There are others, like Aus,n, that are just as old, but they, during World War II, suspended opera,ons so they’ve not been con,nually in opera,on,” Lori Roller, a club spokeswoman said. The Interna,onal Lions Club, which is celebra,ng its centennial this year, wasn’t founded un,l a year later, so the Waco club is older than the interna,onal organiza,on. The interna,onal organiza,on includes more than 45,000 clubs in more than 206 countries and it is the largest service organiza,on in the world with more than 1.35 million members, a Waco Founder’s Lions Club brochure says. “We serve our community, state, na,on and world, aiding visually impaired, hearing impaired and disabled individuals and providing disaster relief, medical supplies, clothing, food and educa,on to those in need,” the brochure says. Most visibly the Founder’s Lions Club owns and operates Lions Park, on New Road at Bosque Boulevard, and that effort is part of the club’s early purpose, to provide service to the community and its people. Before it was Lions Park, the site was Rich Field, a World War I military airfield that served as the city’s airport un,l World War II, when it designated an auxiliary training field to Waco Army Airfield.
