Tai Chi

RUTA BRIEDE The Ernest Saville Room, City Hall 11am (45mins) £3 Ages 6+

Queen of Seagulls Angry, irritable Renata is on a journey of self-discovery. People see her as a run-of-themill grumpy neighbour, but clues emerge about a life she has forgotten. What are the seagulls trying to tell her? What is the meaning of the accordion player’s mysterious song? Will Renata remember who she really is?

The concept of the taiji appears in both Daoist and Confucian philosophy, representing the fusion of yin and yang into a single ultimate. Tai chi training involves five elements; solo hand routines; breathing and meditation; response drills; and self-defence techniques. Since its health benefits were widely promoted in the 20th Century, tai chi has developed a worldwide following, with its focus on gentle movements bringing calm and clarity.

Ruta Briede joins us from the Latvian Academy of Arts to read her captivating story about magic, seagulls and true love that will help all children to think about how we overcome our problems. Queen of Seagulls is a refreshing, contemporary picture book that appeals as much to adults as children, and has wisdom to offer everyone.

We are delighted to welcome Yanxia Zhao, Reverend Lei Ma, and Xeuchen Li to deliver this introductory tai chi workshop.
