TO REITERATE CORITA KENT: RULE ONE: Find a place you and then try trusting it for a

trust, while.

RULE TWO: General duties of a student: Pull everything out of your teacher; pull everything out of your fellow students. RULE THREE: General duties of a teacher: Pull everything out of your students. RULE FOUR: Consider everything an experiment. RULE FIVE: Be self-disciplined: this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way. RULE SIX: Nothing is a mistake. There’s no win and no fail, there’s only make.

RULE SEVEN: The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It’s the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things. RULE EIGHT: Don’t try to create and analyze at the same time. They’re different processes. RULE NINE: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It’s lighter than you think. RULE TEN: We’re breaking all the rules. Even our own rules. And how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities. HINTS: Always be around. Come or go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything. It might come in handy later.

Is production inherently about product?

values of quantity, then might the same true of production?

Does possession entail a quantitative valuation of product? I don’t think so...

Again I say yes.

ON

I think the intersection of possession and product is much more about the relational qualities of those ideas To understand this better, it is important to have a common understanding of what possession may mean in this context. A group of medieval monks developed a theory of ownership that I think is relevant to this argument:

AND

Use: Object is exhausted. (ex. glass of water) Usufruct: Right to use, not individually own (ex. streets, buildings) Possession: Look after something for the next generation. Temporal ownership Dominion: Right to kill or destroy something. Complete ownership.

PRODUCT

Referring once more to the monks framework, possession cannot be created for the self. This means that production must be about a relationship. At some point, some person produced a product who’s affective qualities would be exclusively be experienced by another. Theory is great but ultimately of very little value if it cannot be applied to the work that we do. I think that’s where this discussion starts to get deeply interesting. We live in a time where the wealth of knowledge is vast and technology greatly extends the capabilities of the individual. More and more, the technical aspects of product and production matter less and less. This is great!

PRODUCTION.

If this is our framework, the idea of possession is wholly incompatible with financial and quantitative value. If possession is defined as a relationship with product through time and especially a time removed from the self, then it can be understood that the value of product is purely relational in nature. “tsukumogami” is a concept within the Shinto faith that frames tools (product) as vessels for spirits to inhabit. Specifically, tools that have been in use for 100 years acquire a kami, or spirit, that imbues them with a living quality. While I do not practice Shinto and by no means claim to understand the faith or even the concept of tsukumogami fully, I would assert that even at the most basic read, this concept points to a fundamental cultural idea about possession. In short, tsukumogami implies that objects, through extended use, develop a character of their own. And more importantly that this character develops at a rate that exists independently of the aging of the human “owner”. In this way, product generates qualitative and affective value. If we believe that product can exist outside of

This means more people have more time and better access to the ways of production! The more people can produce for themselves and those they love, the less related quantitative value and product become. I think this is wonderful! The closer production can be related to human-ness, and the closer product can be to the emotional human, the better!

?ARE THEY A

NOVICE?

I THINK IT’S A BOTHNESS

THERE IS NO PERFECT TEA CUP. FURNITURE IS FOR EVERYONE. FORMAL QUALITY HAS VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH THE EMOTIONAL WAY WE EXPERIENCE THE WORLD. TRUE MASTERY IS UNATTAINABLE AND NOBODY IS A COMPLETE NOVICE. WE ALL KNOW SOMETHING AND NOBODY KNOWS EVERYTHING SO WHO CARES? RULE SIX: NOTHING IS A MISTAKE. THERE’S NO WIN AND NO FAIL, THERE’S ONLY MAKE.
