Beginning of a long race Being a freshman comes with a lot of challenges being in sports. Here is how two freshman girls are doing and what it takes. Girls track has begun and for two freshman it has been challenging, hard and tougher competition. Freshman Cassy Praska and Kendall Berg have been running since last season at Wachter Middle School. Praska and Berg have been apart of a relay team along with a sophomore and a senior. At their last meet they placed 2nd overall in varsity and JV placed 3rd. Also, at the NDSU varsity meet the team placed 8th out of 14 teams. “We all try our best and push ourselves to the limit when competing” Berg said. Due to how the weather was in the start of the season, the girl’s meets have been indoors at the University of Mary. It was very exciting for them to have their first outdoor meet of the season last Friday at the BSC bowl. ¨We have a great group of girls out and I am excited to see what they do this season, Girls Track coach Tim Kolsrud said. Praska and Berg are not letting only being a freshman stop them. Praska and Berg have goals set for the rest of the year both personal and their team. Berg wants to accomplish setting her own personal record in all her events, to try in practice and work hard so she can accomplish these goals. Team goals would be to place at WDA. “I feel like if we put our best effort forth we will get the best out of what we put in” Berg said. Praska would like to shave off 5-8 seconds off of her 400 meter time so it will help her other teammates go to state as a relay team. Praska would also like to shave off 3 seconds in her 200 meter so she could possibly qualify for state.

When Praska gets older she would like to have the endurance of sophomore Jilee Golus and senior Madi Mo.” They are always so fast and have so much energy from one race to the next “ Praska said Berg likes running with the upperclassman because it gives her more of a competition so that it makes her run faster. They also act like a role model and it helps her in wanting to improve and encourages them to do their best and support the new things. “The upperclassman push us and our teammates to do our best and to not give up”Berg said.

New York, New York Over 8 months on preparing for this show, dancers showcase what they have learned throughout the 2018-2019 season. For over 20 years Just For Kix coach Michelle Stockert has put on a dance showcase at the end of the season for friends and family to see all the hard work their dancers have done throughout the season. The theme was inspired by a trip that was taken last summer with coach Stockert and a couple dancers when they went to New York to experience a broadway show and what it was like. This is what inspired the theme this year. “Each year there is a theme, and this spring show’s theme is New York, New York based on the trip taken last summer,” Stockert said. The show is not just full of dances throughout the season, Coach Stockert also gives out awards to dancers who have been with Just For Kix for five years and also 10 years. Dancers who received the 10 year award get a plaque with their first year picture and this years picture on it. “We like to recognize the dancers,” Stockert said. During the season we learned a total of three dances and this where we debeaut our last ones and our competition dances. It is very exciting because you will see the improvement and the difficulty of dances increase at the end of the season. At then end of every show all grades 2-12 come out onto the floor and come together for the final dance they have been rehearsing for the past month or so. The song is usually picked to go with the theme. The final dance was a very broadway feel from an old Frank Sinatra remix. “ I am excited for a lot of the dances, but I am most excited to see the finale,” Stockert said. 6

Editorial Sick of not enough sick days Students can not help if they get sick or get injured in a sport. These absences lead to taking semester finals which students do not enjoy. The problem here at Bismarck High School is that students are allowed only two unexcused absences and that counts for sick and injuries. For some students, they never use them or if they are gone from school that wouldn’t be excused. That is alright, but for others that are sick or accident prone it isn’t what’s called ideal. There are students coming to school sick because they do not want to take semester finals. Students will be gone for illnesses they can’t control. Every Student should be allowed 5 sick/unexcused absences and if at the end of the semester your grade is a D or F in any class it is required to take the final. The rest should be an option. If students do have to miss for whatever reason and get the work and have the work done when they return.

Column There are a lot of animal lovers in this world and I am one of them. Many of you may disagree with this because it seems more people are drawn to a dog than a cat, but frankly I don’t really care. Cats are better than dogs. Yes, I did just say that. Don’t get me wrong dogs are great animals who do great things for their owners. Cats are good for certain types of people, and I am one of those people. Cats are so easy to manage because they are such a laid back animal. I mean, they sleep for over half the day. All people need to do for cats is clean the litter box and make sure they have fresh food and water. Dogs on the other hand can be very high energy. Dogs can be very high maintenance and need more attention than a cat. Dogs go out for walks, like to run in the yard and they might even go hunting. Cats nothing like that is required and for me that is great. Did I mention that cats also clean themselves, yes themselves. Which means I do not have to go and take my cat to the groomers for the reason they do not go outside, and they do it for themselves. That is such a win for cats. Cats can shed a lot, but dogs do too, and that is why people own vacuums. In conclusion cats are better than dogs because cats are less work and do not need as much attention.

rants When teachers threaten to call on students that do not have their hands raised. Don’t you think if we knew the answer our hand would be raised? So please, for the sake of our embarrassment, teachers do not call on us when our hands are not raised just to make sure we are “paying attention.”

It really is annoying when you are in-between sizes in shirts. Depending on the shirt if it is a t-shirt go up to a medium so it will fit looser and comfier, but if it is a dress shirt and something more nice, get a small - but sometimes it is hard to tell. I

When people have the audacity to hate on country music, but hype up “Old Town Road” to be one of the greatest country songs ever. Just because a song talks about a horse and wrangler jeans is very stereotypical to assume it is a country song. Until the artist of “Old Town Road” has had over 50 number #1’s in country music

Raves HydroFlasks. Probably one of the greatest water bottles that have been made. They keep any liquid hot or cold for literally hours even days. Therefore everyone should invest in a hydro if they haven’t already. My Camelback water bottle could never do it like this.

Pop Tart Minis are the greatest new thing to hit the shelves. I find it way more convenient than a normal Pop Tart because of them being literally mini and easier to grab and eat. Everyone should keep then in their backpacks incase they need a mid day snack.

Apple juice, nothing new but that does not matter. I find it to be the best juice and very convenient to grab a box and go. Plus it is good for all hours of the day not just a breakfast thing.

A 4 star rating Nardello’s An authentic taste of the East coast pizza. The owner is from New Jersey and when they moved here in 2013 they wanted to open up a pizzeria and share the taste of East coast pizza with us. Located on Broadway Avenue, open Monday-Saturday, walk in and you will place your order of pizza, calzones or maybe even some garlic knots to name a few items and in a reasonable time the workers will bring it out to your selected seat. I highly recommend trying the pizza. You can add extra pizza toppings that will start out at .50 cents. The pizza is really good and decently priced for the amount you get. The environment is a very modern pizzeria with an italian artwork on the walls and with the red and black colors. Being a smaller restaurant the employees are very welcoming and nice. I would rate this restaurant a 4 out of 5 stars.

Nips, a hard, chewy and long lasting flavor candy. Rating this candy at a 4 out of 5 stars because it is really good with the flavor of the Nips lasting for a good 10-15 minutes after putting it in your mouth but not the best candy I have had to rate it a 5. The signature flavor is the coffee flavor but the company Pearson Candy Company also sells a caramel flavor. All the magic is in the candy because the box is very plain and comes in a very basic wrapper. I would recommend this candy to any coffee lover, but would not recommend this product to anyone who does not like candy stuck in their teeth, or if they have braces.

Jenz Trendz A local boutique that started out as a group on facebook and shipping out of their homes to growing out of two locations and their current location now. Located right next to Bruno’s Pizza. It started with a just a dream of two friends both named Jen. They sell a variety of shoes, t-shirts, jeans for all the different seasons. Prices are ranged from $15 to over $50. Jenz Trendz ranges from size XS to plus sizes and really have something for everyone and even have little girl clothing too. For a local boutique, that isn’t the main job for these two Jens which they also both have 4 children of their own. I would really recommend checking it out for some new summer clothes. Rating this store a 4 out of 5.
