NOTICE TO EACH CANDIDATE: 1. The coursework you submit for assessment must be your own individual work. 2. It must be executed in school under the supervision of your teacher. If you submit coursework which cannot be authenticated by your teacher, you will not receive any marks for either the artefact or the design folio.

3. When using research sources, including the Internet, the sources must be acknowledged. Research material copied directly from the Internet or from other sources and presented as your own work will not receive any marks.

4. If you submit coursework where the similarities with the coursework of another candidate are such that it is evident that the coursework is not your own individual work, marks will be lost.

5. You must submit separate, distinct coursework – artefact and design folio.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES: 1. Select one from either the Higher Level or Ordinary Level design briefs opposite. 2. The completed coursework should include a design folio which should contain:  Analysis of the selected design brief  Investigation/research relating to the proposed solution  Development of design ideas, their evaluation and preferred solution  Sketches, notations and working drawings required for the completion of the preferred solution  Evaluation of the design, its completion and the finished artefact. 3. The completed coursework - both artefact and design folio - must be available for assessment by 29 April 2011. 4. Your Examination Number should be written clearly on both the completed artefact and the design folio.

COURSEWORK - DESIGN AND REALISATION Design Briefs - Ordinary Level 1.

Design and make a decorative artefact to hold and display a personal music player. The artefact should be lightweight, contemporary in appearance and should incorporate a music theme.

Design and make an elegant artefact to hold and display at least six eggs on a kitchen worktop. The design should incorporate a theme to reflect aspects of Irish wildlife. The artefact should complement the style of the existing kitchen.

Design and make a decorative artefact to display a small number of medals and trophies. The artefact should be designed to sit on a flat surface. The artefact should be elegant in appearance and should reflect a theme of personal interest.

Design Briefs - Higher Level 1.

Many young people like to use a laptop computer at home. Design and make a freestanding artefact to hold and support a laptop computer when in use. The artefact must be mobile and capable of being stored in a confined place. You should demonstrate how you minimised your carbon footprint in the design, selection of materials and in the processes used to manufacture the artefact.

In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of forests and biodiversity, the United Nations has dedicated 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Design and make an artefact which celebrates the importance of forests in maintaining biodiversity and in preserving the world’s fragile resources. The design should reflect the interdependence of all life forms on earth. The finished artefact should be inspirational and elegant in its setting.

Young people often have small personal items which they wish to keep close at hand. Design and make a decorative artefact to hold a number of such personal items. The design should be inspired by the natural beauty of wood and should celebrate the visual appeal of hand-crafted joints. The artefact should be of pleasing proportions and be attractive in appearance.
