Message Message I

T is my pleasure to welcome all exhibitors and visitors to the third edition of the two-day Borneo Post International Education Fair at the Borneo Convention Centre. Development, much like our people, come in all sizes and packages. You can take the “build it, and they will come” kind of approach, but what we hope to do with the education fair is teach a man to fish, because lasting development comes from the community. We have many education fairs being held in Kuching, but what

BPIEF strives to do is broaden the horizon for you to see the multitude of options you may or may not have thought of before. The BPIEF provides opportunities for students, parents and school counsellors to learn about where to study and what to study including where to obtain the financial assistance. Working adults may also take this opportunity to chart their career paths by looking at institutions or skills training providers for their skills certification. The initiative on the part of The Borneo Post to organise this

international event year after year is commendable. People, are our best asset, and the fair truly complements the Government’s efforts in raising the quality of life in the state, as well as developing the human resource needs, whether academically or in skills-training, towards meeting the requirements of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). It therefore pleases me to extend my support to the Borneo Post International Education Fair 2012. To all our participants and exhibitors, I wish you a fruitful and enjoyable sojourn in Kuching.

igher secondary school is the last frontier to cross before the responsibility of adulthood takes center stage. The students need to decide what they are going to do with the rest of their life and that is no small decision to make. What they decide to do shapes their future. This is where The Borneo Post is proud to play a role. Through our third installment of BPIEF, representatives of various universities, colleges, institutions and training centres come together to advise students and their parents on courses that

pertain to the chosen career paths. Fees, financing of their studies, scholarships, accommodation and other related information are all available to guide them to make the right choice. For this, we are thankful to the Chief Minister YAB Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Adenan Satem Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department and Special Functions Minister, YB Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare, Women and Family development & BPIEF Patron, Human Resource

Global Institute Of Tourism Pioneer Tourism Training Provider GONE are the times when professional courses like engineering, law and medicine alone were sought after. Now, new generation courses tailored to suit the needs of the tourism and the service sector have been receiving overwhelming responses from the student community, quite often bypassing the medical and engineering courses. Along this line, Global Institute of Tourism (GIT) is doing its part as a tourism training provider to groom interested, potential and prospective young candidates and retirees, especially teachers, as professional tourist guides to handle the frontline of the industry. The institute has been in existence for more than 10 years already and has trained hundreds of professional licensed tourist guides throughout Malaysia. Currently, GIT has centers in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, Ipoh and now Kuching. There are 3 intakes yearly and each course lasts about five months in line with the NOSS (National Occupational Skills Standard) syllabus. GIT adopts the ASK (Attitude, Skills, Knowledge)-based methodology, particularly for its tourist guides course. There will also be field trips every weekend for students to have a feel about real tour-guiding tasks including a week’s grand outing to Peninsular Malaysia to interact with other GIT course mates. At the end of each course, students will be prepared by qualified trainers to sit for Ministry of Tourism (Motour)

examinations. The vacancies in the tourism sector are still unoccupied. GIT offers guaranteed jobs upon graduation if students are willing to work anywhere else in Malaysia. This industry is frantically in search of other designations and anyone who is equipped with a tour-guiding licence should have a good start. Tourism vacancies are available year in year out. There are a good number of international, national and domestic tour operators awaiting new recruits. The modern syllabus moulded by Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK) will help the tourism industry in understanding the trends and needs of the tourism field.

SEGi College Sarawak has RM500 deal for BPIEF KUCHING: SEGi College Sarawak is offering students an attractive package which will allow for them to pursue their degrees or diplomas with just RM500. Under this programme, students need not look for financing as it is backed by a government loan. This means they can start and complete a degree or diploma with just the initial payment. Students can find out more about this RM500 offer at the next Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF) 2012 to be held today and tomorrow at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching or come to the College. The college welcomes all school leavers to understand more about the admission into tertiary institutions and to quickly continue their education beyond high school, as having higher qualifications will open doors and forge better opportunities for them in the future. This also goes to the working adults who are looking for an opportunity to gain advance knowledge and make informed choices on suitable courses to take and thus elevates their career standing. “And because students have the option to complete their entire degree or diploma programme in Kuching, they can save thousands of ringgit especially when gaining a UK Honours Degree or an American Bachelor of Science Degree,” said SEGi Marketing Manager, Joseph Wong. SPM students can also save time by entering the foundation programme, linking them directly to a degree programme, instead of opting for STPM, which takes 2 years to complete. This golden opportunity will enable the students to complete their UK Honour degree up to one year ahead of their peers. Another partner university of SEGi, Upper Iowa University in USA, allows direct entry from the SPM level into the foundation year of the 4 year bachelor degree. “SEGi has structured its programmes as well as linking itself with many reputable

In addition, choosing the option of studying in Kuching will shave off additional expenditures like accommodation and living expenses overseas, not to mention the higher currency exchange rates. SEGi is one of Malaysia’s largest private education groups, serving the best education to over 27,000 local and international students. With six major campuses and a new campus opening in Perak, the SEGi Group has embarked on an ambitious expansion programme to materialize their educational visions. “Parents who are concerned about helping their children select a programme should come along to our booth during the exhibition,” said Wong. “The College has in the past helped many students and we are continuing to do so year after year, from guiding them into the ideal programme of interest to sorting out their financial constraints so that they may gain qualifications to secure better jobs.” This event will also be an opportunity for potential students to further

Swinburne Sarawak – Gearing up for SCORE KUCHING: Highly skilled and knowledgeable workers are needed to fill the more than 800,000 jobs to be created with the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). To meet the demand for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce, the state government has turned to Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. For the last two years, Swinburne Sarawak has been tasked to design and conduct courses specified by the Sarawak government. To date, it has trained close to 100 individuals in the shaping of metals, basic foundry and casting, and basic condition monitoring and maintenance for industry. The courses were intended to provide manpower for the aluminium and steel industries that are expected to have the highest economic impact on Sarawak. These are among the 10 industries identified as priority industries. SCORE is a major initiative to develop the Central Region of Sarawak by 2020. It aims to accelerate the state’s economic growth and development, as well as improving the quality of life of the people. The confidence the state government has in Swinburne Sarawak to produce the much needed human capital for SCORE is based on the university’s long track record of close links to industry. According to Professor Ken Heskin, who is the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the university’s Sarawak Campus: “Swinburne has a history of more than 100 years of offering training, education and research designed to support industry and we engage in a range of training and education experiences. “At Swinburne Sarawak, we are happy to be able to contribute to SCORE. With more funding, we hope to have more people involved in this vital training for the development of Sarawak” he said. The courses designed and conducted by the university were funded by the Sarawak State Planning Unit via the State Ministry of Industrial Development. Swinburne, a not-for-profit university, has a reputation in Australia for its practical, career-oriented programmes. They have a strong emphasis on hands-on learning where students work on real-life scenarios facing businesses and the community. Moreover, the university’s close links with industry ensure that its programmes are in tandem with the future needs of industry. Swinburne Sarawak’s programmes in

engineering, science, commerce/business, design and ICT are undifferentiated from those of its home campus in Melbourne. They are accredited by professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers Australia, Institution of Engineers Malaysia, CPA Australia and the Australian Computer Society. The university is also planning to offer chemical engineering in 2012. The introduction of this programme will give students completing the foundation studies in engineering and science an additional engineering major to choose from. On campus, students have access to technologically-advanced facilities. The 16.5 acre campus houses 34 laboratories for engineering, 10 for research, 15 for science and 24 for computing, including a Mac laboratory.

Swinburne has a history of more than 100 years of offering training, education and research designed to support industry and we engage in a range of training and education experiences. Professor Ken Heskin, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the Swinburne university’s Sarawak Campus

Students and staff also have access to 37 tutorial rooms, a 350 seating-capacity lecture theatre and a library that can accommodate 750 students. Other facilities are a multi-purpose hall offering sports facilities for badminton, squash, basketball and volleyball as well as a gym. Tennis courts sit atop a seven-storey car park that has bays for about 500 vehicles. Two blocks of fully-furnished and WiFienabled hostels on campus accommodate

more than 430 students. Swinburne Sarawak is one of only 18 institutions in the country rated in the ‘Excellent’ category of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency’s Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA ’09). Last year, it was awarded self-accreditation status by the MQA following an audit, signifying that the university has in place an effective quality assurance system that meets the stringent MQA

Islamic Information Centre THE unique architecture of the Centre, featuring a combination of the various ethnic identities, is the first physical confluence of ethnic designs and matrices – underlying a bedrock of the true Islamic universality, with no distinction between racial and cultural differences or territorial isolation and parochial sentiments. Foremost though will be that the Centre aims to be an internationally recognised Centre of Excellence in communicating, educating, disseminating, learning, sharing and acquiring information and knowledge on and about Islam.

This is to contribute towards K-society and to correct Islamophobia, bringing the Islamic faith to greater civilisational dimensions in line with the changing lifestyle of modern societies around the world where Islam is a global religion. Situated at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee in Kuching City, the centre plays a role as a depository for data and information on Islam while at the same time acts as a virtual library for the global community. It is going to be an outward looking centre; it will forge partnerships with other organisations within the state, nation as well as

regionally and internationally so as to strengthen its position as a catalyst for knowledge and learning. These key principles of the centre are pertinent in fostering better understanding among peoples of all religions around the world while providing a better understanding of Islam. In its efforts to engage in current issues and concerns at both national, regional and international levels, the centre will be an information provider and contribute positively towards achieving greater understanding

and resolving of misconceptions and bias statements that bring negativity and ill feelings in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society like Sarawak. To achieve these objectives, the centre will as much as possible utilise information technology and the new media to reach out to the younger and more IT-savvy audience within and outside the nation. It is expected that these challenges will become more critical in time to come as more and more people seek information through the

alternative media and web-based channel. With these innovative and virtual action plans, the centre expects to become an important avenue to share and explore knowledge and know-how, leading to a better world for everyone regardless of religious beliefs and origins.

International Medical University – Driving Healthcare Education Excellence

THE International Medical University (IMU) began in 1992 as the International Medical College, or IMC, Malaysia’s first private medical college. IMC became a University in 1999, but the University has remained true to key elements of the original IMC vision, which are to widen access to professional healthcare education, and to use innovative, integrated and studentcentred means in providing that education. This vision required strong links to be forged, from the outset, with reputable Partner Medical Schools committed to excellence and who

share our educational philosophy. It was our progressive, systems based, integrated medical curriculum that first caught the imagination of our Partner Medical Schools, and today we collaborate with partner universities in Australasia, North America, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This successful collaboration then expands to the pharmacy and health sciences programmes at world-class universities in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and China. Since 1999, the University’s focus has been in developing clinical schools in Seremban, Batu Pahat and Kuala Pilah, and develop our own Honours degree courses in Pharmacy and Nursing, and in establishing research as a core activity, together with development of postgraduate research-orientedMasters and PhD programmes. We are already the preferred and leading

private education for medicine and pharmacy in Malaysia. Our growth has been supported by heavy investment in infrastructure development and expansion at Bukit Jalil and Seremban, and in the recruitment of staff of high calibre. In 2008, we introduced Honours degree courses in Dentistry, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical Biotechnology, Psychology, Biomedical Science and in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Just like our MBBS, BPharm and BNursing, these courses have been designed from first principles by our faculty. Bachelor of Nursing Science (Hons) was introduced in 2009, a programme targeted solely for registered nurses to upgrade their qualification from diploma to degree level. In 2010, we introduced the Chiropractic programme, the first of its kind and only complete educational programme in Malaysia and in Southeast Asia. In February 2011, IMU launched the Chinese Medicine programme.

The programme focuses on combining medical education and scientific research, offering the full array of l both Chinese and Western medicine. To date, the University offers undergraduate degree programmes in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Nursing, Nursing Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Psychology, Biomedical Science, Medical Biotechnology, Chiropractic, Chinese Medicine as well as postgraduate degrees such as MSc in Medical Sciences or Community Health by research and PhD in Medical & Health Sciences by research. We believe our courses to be progressive and innovative, and we strive to use best practices in their delivery and assessment. We continue to seek to widen access to healthcare education, and to grow into a centre of healthcare educational excellence in the AsiaPacific region.

Singapore Institute of Management The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM Group) is the leading provider of higher education and professional training in Singapore, reputed for its dedication to lifelong learning and high standards and quality. Founded in 1964 by the Economic Development Board to support Singapore’s economic development, today it is a diverse and vibrant organisation with a wide range of programmes and services. SIM Global Education (SIM GE) is one of four core businesses under the SIM Group, which includes SIM University (UniSIM), SIM Professional Development and SIM Membership Services. SIM GE was awarded the coveted EduTrust certification by the Ministry of Education (MOE)

in May 2010. It is amongst the first private educational institutions (PEIs) to be awarded the EduTrust Certification. EduTrust-certified PEIs must have robust academic systems and processes, and attain quality standards in the delivery of education. In 2010, SIM GE was voted best private school for the third year running at the annual AsiaOne People’s Choice Awards – a public acknowledgment of the best brands and products in Singapore and the region. SIM GE was also voted top choice in private education in the JobsCentral Learning Survey for three consecutive years since 2009. SIM GE has several successful partnerships with renowned universities from Australia, the UK, US and Switzerland. Together, they offer a wide spectrum of more than 50 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

Over the years, more than 91,000 SIM GE graduates have achieved their aspirations through SIM. Its current student enrolment includes more than 19,500 full-time students from Singapore and the region. The SIM campuses include SIMHeadquarters at Clementi, the SIM Global Education Campus at Ulu Pandan and a ‘Campus of the future’ slated for completion in 2014. The SIM Headquarters along Clementi Road is SIM’s main and largest campus with a capacity for 120,000 students. Facilities include over 90 lecture theatres, tutorial and seminar rooms, as well as computer laboratories, a multipurpose hall seating 1,600, a student lounge and a management library. The Tay Eng Soon Library is Singapore’s largest and most comprehensive management library.

The SIM Global Education Campus at Ulu Pandan is the most comprehensive lifestyle campus combining residential, sporting and recreational facilities for both local and foreign students. The 4.5 hectare campus provides accommodation for up to 428 students and has tennis and futsal courts, gym, outdoor yoga pad and fitness area, as well as well as a student’s lounge and dance studio. Themed short-stay studio apartments are also available for parents and visiting faculty. To cater to our fast-growing student population, SIM embarked on a Campus Development Master Plan to more than double our main campus at Clementi over two phases to be completed in 2014. Costing some S$300 million, the expanded SIM campus will be a setting that engages the students through the ‘third teacher’ – the campus environment.

Besides state-of-the-art classrooms and lecture theatres, it will provide fully wireless environment with amenities such as an extended library, study spaces with open courtyard and a student hub with cyber stations. Phase 1 of the campus extension will be ready by 2011. For more information about SIM Global Education, visit www.simge.edu.sg or contact Market Management Services Sdn Bhd at 082-246795 or email market@mms.com.my. SIM will also be a participant of the third installation of the Borneo Post International Education Fair (BPIEF) being held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on March 3-4 from 10am to 6pm. THE SWISS HOTEL MANAGEMENT SCHOOL SHMS’s goal is to ensure an international approach to education. Within a multi-cultural classroom atmosphere, students gain an international awareness of the industry and develop the ability to effectively communicate in the global environment. Programme Structure English is the medium of instruction at SHMS. Each year of study consists of a 5-month academic term at SHMS and 4 to 6 month paid internship in the hospitality industry. SWITZERLAND’S reputation for Hotel Management training results from an emphasis on practical skills and experience. A profound understanding of all aspects of hotel management creates the multi-skilled and multi-talented professional employers are looking for. Whilst similar Swiss Hotel Schools are increasingly moving away from practical input, becoming more like business schools, the Swiss Hotel Management School (SHMS) maintains its focus on practical aspects whilst still incorporating key management elements, including Human Resource, Marketing, Finance and languages into the curriculum. A combination that provides graduates with the best possible foundation for their future career.

Emphasis The emphasis at SHMS Caux is on applied Swiss practical hospitality expertise combined with management competencies. At the SHMS University Centre, Leysin, we offer a broader range of Higher Diplomas, reflecting the increasing diversity within the service sector. Programme Intensity Our intensive programmes offer up to 30 hours a week of instruction. The fully recognized BA (Hons) programme can be completed in only 3 years, the MA degree in 4 years. This means a lower educational investment and an earlier start into your career. SHMS provides a number of different programmes for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The

programmes range from 1 to 4 years in length. Advisory Board The SHMS Advisory Board, consisting of experts from the hospitality industry and academia , reviews the SHMS curriculum for each programme, to ensure our programmes are contemporary and industry relevant. Academic Faculty All members of the faculty have a solid education and practical experience in the subject they are teaching. Regular evaluation of teaching ensures the methods and content are contemporary. In addition, all staff participate in ongoing development programmes. Teaching Materials SHMS uses the latest books and course materials, imported from all over the world, to ensure that the content of every programme is “State-of-the-Art” Study Advisor Students have, in their 1st and 2nd year of study, the option to request a study advisor. Study Advisors are usually 3rd year students who assist new students (often in their native language) to overcome any initial study difficulties they may encounter. This service is free of charge,

however the Study advisors receive an hourly compensation from SHMS. Graduation Students are awarded their qualification at the end of the programme upon successful completion of their academic term(s) and the required internship(s). Internship The internship is an integral part of the academic programmes at SHMS. The SHMS Internship Office assists students in finding employment in a hotel or restaurant. Students who complete their internship in Switzerland are paid a salary at current industry trainee rates. accommodation is sometimes provided by the employer during this period. Alternatively, students rent and share an apartment. The gross salary is approximately CHF 2,075 to CHF 2,450 per month (less deductions for food, taxes, accommodation, insurance = approximately CHF 1,075 to CHF 1,400 net per month). Over the course of the internship, students in Switzerland are usually visited by an SHMS internship coordinator and assessed by their employer. Students must successfully complete their internship to pass their programme at SHMS.

Internship Abroad Students may also complete their internship in their countries. The selected employer and position must be approved by SHMS. The salary will vary depending on the chosen country. The SHMS Internship Office offers many contacts for internships abroad. SEG Career Advisory Service SHMS prides itself on its graduate placement services provided through the SEG Careers Advisory Services. SEG has links to some of the finest hotels around the world and has an excellent reputation amongst employers for several reasons: • SEG is Switzerland’s largest Hospitality Education provider and therefore very attractive especially for large international employers seeking large numbers of new staff. • Employers appreciate the fact that SHMS Graduates have gone through an intensive training of practical modules and therefore are ready to respond to the needs of the industry. The fact that SHMS specializes in the delivery of practical subject and skills makes our graduates particularly attractive to employers. • SHMS’ outstanding success story over the past years is proof to employers that SHMS educational quality is of the very highest standard.

UPNM UPNM was formerly known as Akedemi Tentera Malaysia (ATMA) or the Malaysian Armed Forces Academy which was established on June 1, 1995. The institution was also branded as the sole organization responsible in upgrading the knowledge and academic status of the armed forces by offering bachelor degree courses in fields of engineering, sciences and managements while not neglecting the basic requirements of military training. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) UNIMAS is an ISO-certified university. It was granted the prestigious MS ISO 9001:2000 certification for excellence in its core management processes – from the intake of new students to certification of its graduates. Our undergraduate programmes have been designed to suit the needs of society and industry. Our strong emphasis on technology has awarded us with the prestigous Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Status on 17th Nov 2003. An award granted for our role and ability in developing manpower for MSC and related needs, through our strategic learning and training programmes. UNIMAS has won the Premiere Information Technology Award from the Malaysian Government, the “Bridging the Digital Divide” category of AFACT’s eAsia Award. It has also won the Industry Innovators Award for System Development and Application from the US-based Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), for its success in setting up a telecentre in the remote community of Bario, Sarawak, to assist the community in communication, education, e-commerce, health and government services. UNIMAS has been successful in the acquisition of research grants, coming up with publications and useful scientific findings. The university’s Institute of Health and Community Medicine has successfully developed a candidate vaccine for dengue through collaboration with an international company, Bavarian Nordic. And the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology has successfully developed a process to convert sago starch to lactic acid for the production of environmentally-friendly plastic. The knowledge discovery initiatives at UNIMAS are premised partly upon the wealth of natural resources and diverse socio-cultural make up of the State of Sarawak. While UNIMAS is strong in biodiversity study, this and most of other research activities at this university are firmly based on contemporary technologies. For example, the conservation of the natural resources of the state, through combined strength in computer science and IT, with expertise in molecular biology and biotechnology, have effectively synergized several collaborative

research, both locally and internationally. The cultural diversity and social uniqueness of Sarawak communities offers opportunities for studies in health and medicine, by offering a look at the influence of environmental factors and socio-cultural practices, on the interactions of various pathogens; as well as other issues related to community health. UNIMAS commitment to research has already been recognized by the stakeholders and partners in industry by the provision of endowments for the establishment of eight research chairs; these include the Tun Zaidi Chair for Medicinal Chemistry, the Tun Openg Chair for Sago Technology, the Shell Chair for Environmental Studies, and the Sapura Chair for ICT. Today, UNIMAS’ strength in research is being acknowledged by peers in at least three niche areas of research: • Biotechnological research in epidemiology (dengue, JE, FMHD, malaria), biogeography (phylogenetics) and agriculture (sago); • ICT, specifically on rural communication and image analysis; and • Biodiversity, natural resource and environmental management. The university management has upgraded, based on their strength in research, the status of some of their research groups at UNIMAS to Centres of Excellence which are: • The Malaria Research Centre • The Centre for Water Research • Rural Informatics • Image Analysis and Spatial Technologies • Semantic Technology and Augmented

Reality • Renewable Energy • Sago Research Prestigious R&D awards recently received by UNIMAS include 5 gold medals and 2 Special Jury Award during the World Exhibition on Innovation and New Technologies 2010 (INNOVA’ 2010) in Brussels, Belgium on the November 18th - 20th2010.
