Former Washington State Football player Torey Hunter began his career with the Vandals during the 2011-12 season as the cornerbacks coach. Hunter’s coaching career that began in 2002 wasn’t necessary the path he was looking to go. After playing professionally for seven years, coaching was something Hunter tried and fell in love with – he knew this was the career for him. “He’s played at a very high level,” head coach Robb Akey said. “And he’s been able to teach it. The thing that’s important to me is his ability to teach. He’ll bring a swagger to that position. Corners have to have that.” The part that is most overlooked in Hunter’s eyes is one of the key aspects that keeps him in the game. He enjoys teaching and nurturing, most importantly being able to sit down with a young man and help him shape his life and help him make the proper decisions for himself. Akey said that Hunter’s extensive defensive knowledge, which was honed during his four years as an all-Pac10 cornerback for Washington State, made the Tacoma (Wash.) native his first choice. Hunter’s first collegiate coaching stop was as the secondary coach at Western Washington in 2002. He then went on to be the secondary coach at Idaho State University from 2003-2006. He spent the 2007 season as the receivers coach at Central Washington before he went on to coach at Eastern Washington with former Central Washington coach Beau Baldwin. Baldwin accepted the EWU post position and recruited Hunter to follow. Hunter’s most recent rise to the top was coaching the Eastern Washington secondary during its 2010 Football Championship Subdivision title run. During Hunter’s playing days at Washington State, the Cougars won the Alamo and the Copper bowls. Hunter was a thirdround draft choice of the Houston Oilers and played professionally in the NFL, NFL Europe, CFL and Arena Football League. He is a graduate of Tacoma’s Curtis High School, where he was senior class president.
