a culture est le trait d’union qui rassemble les hommes par-delà leurs différences. Elle exprime sous différents modes ce qu’il y a d’essentiel en nous et qui nous unit. Dans la joie comme dans la douleur. Face à la douleur, précisément, le Palais des BeauxArts tenait à exprimer sa solidarité avec les victimes du séisme qui frappa le Japon, il y a deux ans, et qui donna naissance à la catastrophe de Fukushima. Le Wiener Philharmoniker, dirigé pour l’occasion par le grand chef Zubin Mehta, a accepté de s’associer à cet hommage. La culture nous rassemble également dans la joie, et même dans le bonheur. Le 20 mars, en effet, nous avons le plaisir de nous associer à la première Journée internationale du bonheur, une initiative de l’Organisation des Nations Unies, soucieuse de sensibiliser chaque pays à la nécessité d’accroître le bonheur de ses citoyens. Nous sommes ravis de contribuer à ce formidable projet qui nous rappelle, en cette période de crise, l’importance des valeurs immatérielles. My Left Foot, le chef-d’œuvre que son metteur en scène Jim Sheridan viendra nous présenter en personne, est un exemple frappant de cette réalisation possible du bonheur à travers l’art. Un rapprochement que le Palais des Beaux-Arts essaie d’incarner depuis de nombreuses années en mettant la culture au service des hommes et de leur bien commun.

Om dat verdriet te verzachten wil het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten zijn medeleven betuigen aan de slachtoffers van de aardbeving in Japan en de kernramp in Fukushima. De Wiener Philharmoniker, voor de gelegenheid onder leiding van maestro Zubin Mehta, luistert ons eerbetoon op. Maar ook in tijden van geluk brengt cultuur mensen samen. Zo werd 20 maart door de Verenigde Naties uitgeroepen tot ‘Internationale Dag van het Geluk’, een initiatief dat elk land ertoe moet aanzetten om het geluk van zijn inwoners voorop te stellen. We werken maar wat graag mee aan dit geweldige project dat in volle crisisperiode wijst op de onschatbare waarde van wat zich niet in cijfers laat vatten. Regisseur Jim Sheridan komt in eigen persoon zijn meesterwerk My Left Foot voorstellen. Het is een schoolvoorbeeld van hoe geluk zich via kunst kan verspreiden, een gegeven dat het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten al jaren onderschrijft door cultuur ten dienste te stellen van het algemeen welzijn.

Faced with sorrow, the Centre for Fine Arts sought an opportunity to offer an expression of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that struck Japan two years ago and led to the catastrophe at Fukushima. The Vienna Philharmonic, conducted for the occasion by the great conductor Zubin Mehta, has agreed to join us in this tribute. Culture can also bring us together in joy, and even happiness. On 20 March we will have the pleasure of joining in the celebrations to mark the first International Day of Happiness proclaimed by the United Nations, which is eager to remind every country of the need to increase the happiness of its citizens. We are delighted to make a contribution to this great project – which reminds us, in these times of crisis, of the importance of non-material values. My Left Foot, a masterpiece that will be presented by its director, Jim Sheridan, in person, offers a striking example of how it is possible to achieve happiness through art. A connection that the Centre for Fine Arts has worked to bring about down the years in its endeavours to place culture at the service of humanity and the common good. Paul Dujardin, Director-general

En mars, BOZAR CINEMA réserve de très belles choses aux cinéphiles. Avec The Story of Film, le critique de cinéma irlandais Mark Cousins nous livre un bel exploit. Dans ce documentaire de 15 heures, il nous raconte de manière très personnelle l’histoire du septième art, mettant en lumière les effrontés du cinéma et la contribution des pays non occidentaux, loin du glamour hollywoodien. En exclusivité pour BOZAR, Cousins viendra le présenter en personne (les 01, 02 et 03.03). Le cinéaste palestinien Elia Suleiman, connu pour ses perles d’humour caustique (Chronique d’une disparition, Intervention divine), nous rendra également visite. Il défendra une série de courts et moyens métrages qui n’ont pas encore été diffusés chez nous (12.03). Dans le cadre de l’Offscreen Festival, nous accueillerons l’enfant terrible du cinéma John Waters. Le roi du film culte, qui n’hésite pas à franchir les limites du bon goût avec le sulfureux Pink Flamingos, foulera les planches de la salle Henry Le Boeuf pour un one-man-show retraçant sa vie. Le spectacle sera suivi par la projection de Polyester en Odorama,

accompagnée de cartes odorantes. Kitschissime ! (09.03) Ensuite, la programmation virera au vert-blanc-orange, les couleurs de l’Irlande. Le réalisateur Jim Sheridan présentera My Left Foot (22.03). Ce film est surtout connu pour l’Oscar qu’il a valu à Daniel Day-Lewis pour son interprétation du peintre Christy Brown, qui souffrait de paralysie cérébrale. La CINEMATEK consacre une rétrospective à ce cinéaste fascinant enraciné dans le théâtre, qui voyage entre l’Irlande et l’Amérique. Très irlandais encore, le fabuleux documentaire Rocky Road to Dublin (18.03). Ce document authentique de 1968 retrace les influences culturelles des Irlandais à cette époque. In de maand maart heeft BOZAR CINEMA voor de filmliefhebber heel wat moois in petto. Met The Story of Film bracht de Ierse filmjournalist Mark Cousins een huzarenstukje voor elkaar. In een documentaire van vijftien uur vertelt hij op hoogst persoonlijke wijze de geschiedenis van de zevende kunst, met bijzondere aandacht voor eigenzinnige rebellen en de inbreng van niet-westerse landen, ver van de glitter en glamour van Hollywood. Exclusief voor BOZAR komt Cousins zijn film persoonlijk voorstellen (01, 02 & 03.03). Ook present is de Palestijnse cineast Elia Suleiman, bekend van droogkomische pareltjes als Divine Intervention en Chronicle of a Disappearance. Hij licht een reeks korte en middellange films toe die niet eerder in ons land te zien waren (12.03). Een andere gast is eeuwig enfant terrible John Waters, die langskomt in het raam van het Offscreen Festival. De koning van de cultfilm, die met schandaalprenten als Pink Flamingos de grenzen van de goede smaak een paar kilometer verlegde, geeft op de planken van Henry Le Bœufzaal een onemanshow over zijn

leven en werk. Daarna tonen we Polyester in Odorama, mét geurkaarten die de toeschouwer eigenhandig moet bedienen. Kitsch in het kwadraat (09.03)! Vervolgens kleurt de programmering groen-wit-oranje, de kleuren van Ierland. Regisseur Jim Sheridan presenteert My Left Foot (22.03). De film is vooral bekend vanwege de Oscarwinnende vertolking van Daniel Day-Lewis als de aan hersenverlamming lijdende kunstenaar Christy Brown. Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). La Leçon de Musique souligne la place majeure qu’occupe l’art musical dans les œuvres du peintre. Cette vaste exposition se double d’un cycle de concerts qui évoquent l’atmosphère des toiles de l’artiste à travers la musique de son époque. Cet événement transversal permet pour la première fois en Belgique d’explorer et de ressentir l’univers de Watteau à travers différents modes d’expression artistiques. Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). La Leçon de Musique vous fait pénétrer dans l’univers bucolique, raffiné et énigmatique de la fête galante, peuplé de danseurs, de musiciens et de personnages aux allures d’acteurs sortis de la commedia dell’arte. L’imaginaire de Watteau a puisé dans l’art des maîtres flamands, français et italiens, mais aussi dans les arts non-plastiques, la poésie nécessaire à l’expression du sentiment amoureux. Grâce à une collaboration exceptionnelle avec le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, la Bibliothèque nationale de France et William Christie, commissaire

général de l’exposition, BOZAR présente une programmation transversale qui reflète la démarche de Watteau. L’exposition rassemble une quinzaine de toiles et une trentaine de dessins de l’artiste, une soixantaine de gravures et de partitions, ainsi que des instruments et des traités musicaux de l’époque, mais aussi de nouvelles créations du grand photographe belge Dirk Braeckman, inspirées par les œuvres du peintre. Un cycle de conférences qui réunit musiciens, historiens de l’art et musicologues (07 & 26.03, jusqu’ au 02.05) et une série d’activités destinées aux familles (ateliers et visites guidées 17 & 24.03) vous plongent au plus près de l’artiste. Et la musique ? Elle est très présente ! Watteau et les muses décline jusqu’en mai une série de concerts autour de l’artiste (voir p. 9 & 11). De plus, tous les jeudis soirs, des concerts sont proposés au centre de l’exposition par les étudiants de conservatoires belges et français.

Antoine Watteau (1684-1721): De Muziekles benadrukt de belangrijke rol van muziek in het oeuvre van de schilder. Deze grote tentoonstelling gaat gepaard met een reeks concerten die via muziek uit de tijd van de kunstenaar de sfeer van zijn doeken oproepen. Dankzij dit transversale evenement krijg je voor het eerst in ons land de kans om Watteaus wereld vanuit verschillende invalshoeken te ontdekken en beleven. Antoine Watteau (1684-1721): De Muziekles dompelt je onder in het idyllische, verfijnde en mysterieuze universum van een ‘fête galante’ vol dansers, muzikanten en personages die wel uit de commedia dell’arte lijken te komen. Watteau putte uit de kunst van Vlaamse, Franse en Italiaanse meesters, maar ook uit niet-beeldende kunst, namelijk de poëzie die nodig is om uitdrukking te geven aan de liefde. Dankzij een uitzonderlijke samenwerking met het Palais des BeauxArts in Rijsel, de Franse Bibliothèque nationale en William Christie, algemeen curator van de tentoonstelling, kan NL

BOZAR een gevarieerd programma voorstellen dat de werkwijze van Watteau mooi weerspiegelt. De tentoonstelling omvat een vijftiental doeken en een dertigtal tekeningen van de kunstenaar, een zestigtal gravures en partituren, en zelfs enkele instrumenten en muziekverhandelingen uit die tijd, maar ook nieuwe creaties van de Belgische fotograaf Dirk Braeckman die zich door het oeuvre van de schilder liet inspireren. Door diverse lezingen met muzikanten, kunsthistorici en musicologen (07 & 26.03 t.e.m. 02.05) en activiteiten voor het hele gezin (workshops en rondleidingen 17 & 24.03) leer je de wereld van de kunstenaar van nabij kennen. En ook muziek is op de afspraak! Tot mei kun je onder de benaming Watteau en de muzen genieten van een reeks concerten rond de kunstenaar (zie p. 9 & 11). Dans le cadre de notre cycle de concerts autour de Watteau, l’esprit virevoltant de Terpsichore, la muse de la danse, souffle sur le Palais avec la Compagnie Fêtes Galantes et les Talens Lyriques. Au programme, des ballets mis en musique par Händel et Rebel, l’inventivité du compositeur germano-britannique et l’esprit français au tournant du Grand siècle et des Lumières. Avec pour trait d’union, la beauté des corps, la sensualité des gestes, la chaleur des couleurs et la virtuosité des notes. Béatrice Massin est une chorégraphe qui œuvre depuis longtemps en faveur d’une danse baroque contemporaine. Dans l’esprit du début du XVIIIe siècle, « Terpsichore met en scène la naissance de la couleur en mouvement ». Un mouvement porté par Christophe Rousset, qui a su en restituer toute l’énergie musicale. Venez vous aussi célébrer Watteau à la faveur de ces fêtes de sons et de lumières (20.03). (O.B.) FR

NL In het raam van onze concertenreeks rond Watteau komt Terpsichore, de muze van de dans, in al haar beweeglijkheid voor het voetlicht met Les Fêtes galantes en Les Talens Lyriques. Op het programma staan balletvoorstellingen opgeluisterd door Händel en Rebel, dus Duits-Britse inventiviteit in combinatie met Frans enthousiasme ten tijde van de verlichting. Beide componisten worden bondgenoten in hun ode aan de sensuele bewegingen van het lichaam en de hartverwarmende kleur en virtuositeit van de muziek. Choreografe Béatrice Massin pleit al jaren voor een barokdans met een hedendaags tintje. Ze neemt ons mee naar de achttiende eeuw en brengt met Terpsichore ‘het ontstaan van kleur in beweging op de planken’. Christophe Rousset weet het geheel een vernieuwd muzikaal elan te geven. Un vivier de jeunes chanteurs prometteurs Kweekvijver van jonge en beloftevolle zangers

Elle n’est pas passée inaperçue, notamment parce que William Christie est également le commissaire général de notre grande exposition consacrée à Watteau – un incontournable ! Lors de son concert de clôture, le fondateur des Arts Florissants nous présentera les chanteurs de la 6e édition du Jardin des Voix, une « académie » qu’il a fondée au sein du Théâtre de Caen dans le but de donner un coup de pouce aux jeunes talents à l’aube de leur carrière. Six chanteurs se plongeront pendant deux semaines dans le répertoire baroque, sous la direction d’une équipe de spécialistes. Ils révèleront ensuite le résultat de leur travail lors d’une tournée internationale, qui fera aussi escale à Bruxelles. L’occasion idéale de découvrir les stars de demain. Xavier Verbeke

Ze is niet onopgemerkt voorbijgegaan, want Christie is ook algemeen curator van onze grote Watteau-tentoonstelling, een topper die je niet mag missen. Tijdens zijn slotconcert stelt Christie de zangers voor van de zesde editie van Le Jardin des Voix, een ‘academie’ die hij aan het Franse Théâtre de Caen oprichtte met de bedoeling jonge talenten aan het begin van hun carrière een duwtje in de rug te geven. Zes zangers verdiepen zich twee weken lang in het barokrepertoire onder leiding van een team specialisten. Daarna laten ze het resultaat horen tijdens een internationale concerttournee die ook Brussel aandoet. De ideale kans om nu al kennis te maken met de sterren van morgen. NL

BOZAR présente en Belgique la première exposition consacrée à Neo Rauch, une œuvre puissante, au langage très personnel, qui synthétise différents courants esthétiques du XXe siècle.

L’exposition du peintre leipzigois Neo Rauch (* 1960) présente plus de quarante grands formats et un ensemble de dessins exemplaires. Elle propose une immersion intensive dans une œuvre contemporaine fascinante et permet d’en suivre à rebours l’évolution des principales étapes, de 2012 à 1993. Comme Luc Tuymans, auquel BOZAR avait consacré une rétrospective il y a tout juste deux ans, Neo Rauch est une figure emblématique de l’art contemporain. Son esthétique, toute personnelle, synthétise différentes influences telles que l’« ancienne » École de Leipzig, les grands maîtres italiens, les peintres américains ou la bande dessinée futuriste. Ses toiles sont de grands points d’interrogation qui vous marqueront par leur force expressive. Car Rauch peint avant tout pour l’œil du spectateur, vous

entrainant dans un monde à narrations multiples, fondé sur la juxtaposition de nombreuses références, hétérogènes en apparence, mais dont le rapprochement inattendu est créateur de sens. Adepte de l’œuvre ouverte (« opera aperta », selon l’heureuse expression d’Umberto Eco), il puise dans la tradition iconographique classique les ressources de sa narration, à mi-chemin entre le figuratif et l’art abstrait, pour mieux questionner la société moderne. Il ne faut pas s’y tromper : derrière la dimension intemporelle de ses œuvres, c’est la modernité qu’il critique. Il la compare au Démiurge, créateur illégitime d’un monde imparfait, une « figure symbolique de l’esprit de l’âge moderne et de la volonté qui en découle de refaire le monde », comme l’explique Harald Kunde, curateur de l’exposition. Venez découvrir une œuvre forte, qui vous interpellera par son traitement et vous intriguera par sa composition. Il vous appartient désormais de reconstruire son sens.

BOZAR organiseert de allereerste Belgische tentoonstelling over het werk van Neo Rauch, een krachtig oeuvre met een hoogstpersoonlijke taal, dat de verschillende kunststromingen van de 20e eeuw samenbrengt.

De tentoonstelling over de Duitse schilder Neo Rauch (°1960) toont meer dan veertig grote schilderijen en een verzameling tekeningen. Ze wil het publiek intens laten genieten van een fascinerend hedendaags oeuvre en belicht de belangrijkste evoluties in zijn werk van 1993 tot 2012. Net als Luc Tuymans, aan wie BOZAR twee jaar geleden een retrospectieve wijdde, is Neo Rauch een toonaangevend figuur in de hedendaagse kunstwereld. Zijn persoonlijke vormgeving brengt verschillende invloeden samen, zoals de ‘oude’ school van Leipzig, grote Italiaanse meesters, Amerikaanse schilders en futuristische strips. Zijn doeken zijn grote vraagtekens die treffen door hun expressieve kracht. Rauch schildert voor het oog van zijn publiek dat

hij meeneemt naar een wereld vol boeiende vertellingen en kruisverwijzingen die op het eerste gezicht niet bij elkaar passen, maar door de onverwachte combinatie net meer betekenis krijgen. Neo Rauch is een voorstander van open kunst (of ‘opera aperta’ zoals Umberto Eco het zo mooi zegt) en put uit de klassieke iconografische traditie in zijn vertellingen die het midden houden tussen figuurlijke en abstracte kunst. Zo kan hij de moderne maatschappij beter in vraag stellen. Maar vergis je niet. Ondanks de tijdloze dimensie van zijn werk bekritiseert hij wel degelijk de moderniteit. Hij vergelijkt ze met de demiurg, de onwettige ‘schepper’ van een onvolmaakte wereld, een “figuur die symbool staat voor de moderne tijd en de wil om een nieuwe wereld tot stand te brengen”, aldus Harald Kunde, de curator van de tentoonstelling. Dit krachtige oeuvre spreekt aan door de unieke aanpak van de kunstenaar en intrigeert met zijn compositie. Aan jou om er betekenis aan te geven. (O.B.)

Avec Changing States: Contemporary Irish Art & Francis Bacon’s Studio, BOZAR vous invite à découvrir l’art contemporain irlandais et l’atelier de Bacon. Un événement d’envergure européenne.

Le Palais des Beaux-Arts accueille Changing States: Contemporary Irish Art & Francis Bacon’s Studio grâce à une étroite collaboration avec deux grandes institutions de Dublin, l’Irish Museum of Modern Art et le Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. L’exposition contemporaine regroupe 28 œuvres de 20 artistes émergents ou à mi-carrière, qui ont contribué de manière significative à l’essor des arts plastiques d’aujourd’hui sur la scène internationale. Ils utilisent de multiples modes d’expression artiswtique (peintures, sculptures et installations multimédias, vidéos et films d’animation, images de synthèse ou photographies). L’intitulé Changing States reflète le renouveau qu’ils ont induit dans leur traitement des champs politique, social, économique et culturel. Dans un contexte de plus en plus globalisé, ils explorent des thématiques transnationales, questionnant les idéologies dominantes.

Changing States présente également des documents d’archives et des œuvres inachevées en provenance de l’atelier de Francis Bacon (1909-1992), l’un des plus grands peintres du XXe siècle. Né à Dublin, mais de nationalité britannique, il vécut une jeunesse marquée par la violence et l’angoisse, très présentes dans sa peinture. Ayant passé la plus grande partie de sa

Een project op Europese schaal.

Het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten verwelkomt Changing States: Contemporary Irish Art & Francis Bacon’s Studio, in samenwerking met twee grote instellingen uit Dublin, namelijk het Irish Museum of Modern Art en de Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. De tentoonstelling groepeert 28 werken van twintig jonge of gevestigde artiesten die de beeldende kunsten hielpen groot maken en internationaal in de belangstelling brachten. Ze maken gebruik van verschillende kunstvormen zoals schilder- en beeldhouwkunst, installaties, video, animatiefilm, fotografie en computertekeningen. De titel Changing States weerspiegelt de vernieuwing die ze op politiek, economisch, sociaal en cultureel vlak teweegbrachten. In een context die steeds verder over de hele wereld uitdijt, tasten ze transnationale

thema’s af en plaatsen ze een vraagteken bij de dominante ideologieën. Changing States haalt ook archiefdocumenten en onafgewerkte schilderijen van Francis Bacon (1909-1992) uit zijn atelier. De schilder, geboren in Dublin maar met Britse nationaliteit, wordt beschouwd als een van de grootste kunstschilders van de twintigste eeuw. Na een jeugd vol angst en geweld komt zijn verleden in zijn werk sterk naar boven. Het grootste deel van zijn leven bracht hij in Londen door. Daar trok hij zich in 1962 in Reece Mews 7 terug en schilderde er tot aan zijn dood verschillende van zijn beroemdste werken. Maar weinig mensen kregen de kans Bacon in zijn atelier aan het werk te zien. Via een selectie uit duizenden teruggevonden documenten krijg je nu een ongewoon portret van de kunstenaar. Werp een blik op zijn inspiratiebronnen en ontdek de bezieling van een schilder die onmiskenbaar zijn stempel drukte op de recente kunstgeschiedenis. (O.B.)

Le Palais des Beaux-Arts a concocté un programme très particulier pour ses visiteurs. L’exposition consacrée à Antoine Watteau sera le théâtre idéal pour vous plonger dans la musique intime de l’époque du peintre à travers la performance de l’Ensemble Il Caravaggio. La musette, cet instrument oublié présent dans les peintures de Watteau, n’aura plus aucun secret pour vous grâce aux explications de Jean-Pierre Van Hees. De jeunes étudiants vous guideront à travers les expositions Focus on Ireland et Neo Rauch au gré de leurs coups de cœur. Dans la galerie Ravenstein, Patricia Barakat se glissera dans la peau de femmes célèbres. Het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten, enthousiast als nooit tevoren, heeft voor de bezoekers een bijzonder programma op touw gezet. De tentoonstelling rond Antoine Watteau is de perfecte omgeving voor intieme muziek uit de tijd van de schilder, uitgevoerd door het Ensemble Il Caravaggio. Jean-Pierre Van Hees geeft tekst en uitleg bij de musette, een vergeten instrument dat te zien is in de schilderijen van Watteau. Jonge studenten vertellen je alles over hun lievelingswerk in de tentoonstellingen Focus on Ireland en Neo Rauch. In de Ravensteingalerij neemt Patricia Barakat de poses aan van verschillende bekende vrouwen. Mehta Conducts Trésors de la musique tonale Schatten van de tonale muziek

Zubin Mehta © Wilfried Hösl FR Zubin Mehta dirige le célèbre Wiener Philharmoniker pour un sommet du romantisme tardif : la monumentale Huitième Symphonie de Bruckner. Ce concert, qui a lieu deux ans après la catastrophe de Fukushima, est dédié aux victimes du séisme.

Zubin Mehta, le célèbre chef indien d’origine parsi, a délaissé pour un soir son cher Orchestre Philharmonique d’Israël pour prendre la tête du Wiener Philharmoniker. Cette formation prestigieuse, que tout mélomane, même le néophyte, connaît au moins de réputation, est un pilier de la scène musicale internationale et une incontournable référence discographique immortalisée par de nombreux grands labels (DG, Decca, EMI, etc.). Vous avez certainement, sans le savoir, la sonorité de l’orchestre à l’oreille pour l’avoir au moins entendu interpréter une œuvre classique. Car la couleur musicale du Wiener Philharmoniker se distingue par l’utilisation d’instruments spécifiques qui possèdent leurs timbres propres, et par la transmission de

l’esprit hérité du classicisme viennois. L’ensemble, fondé en 1842, n’a cessé de fasciner le public, mais aussi les plus grands chefs et les compositeurs tels que Wagner, Brahms, Mahler, Strauss et Bruckner, dont il interprète pour cette soirée la dernière grande symphonie menée à son terme. La « Huitième » du compositeur autrichien atteint le paroxysme des possibilités tonales. Elle en domine la logique musicale et en signe l’achèvement. Cette soirée a lieu deux ans après le séisme qui secoua le Japon et provoqua la catastrophe nucléaire de Fukushima. En mémoire aux victimes, l’orchestre interprète la Scène des grues, extraite de Kuolema, écrite à l’origine par Sibelius pour la pièce éponyme d’Arvid Järnefelt. La scène évoque une grue – associée à la longévité et à la guérison dans la culture nippone – apportant un enfant au jeune couple de cette pièce métaphorique, symbole du renouveau. Ce concert constitue une belle occasion de vous associer à l’hommage que nous rendons au peuple japonais. (O.B.)

Zubin Mehta dirigeert de beroemde Wiener Philharmoniker in de monumentale Achtste symfonie van Bruckner, een laatromantisch hoogtepunt. Het concert wordt opgedragen aan de slachtoffers van de kernramp in Fukushima, precies twee jaar geleden.

Zubin Mehta, de beroemde Indiase dirigent van Parsiafkomst, laat voor één avond zijn geliefde Israëlisch Filharmonisch Orkest in de steek om de Wiener Philharmoniker te leiden. Dit prestigieuze orkest, waarvan elke melomaan en zelfs de grootste leek op zijn minst de reputatie kent, is een vaste waarde in de internationale muziekwereld, mede dankzij zijn legendarische plaatopnamen bij tal van grote labels (DG, Decca, EMI enz.). Zijn typische klank klinkt de luisteraar meteen vertrouwd in de oren. Uniek voor de Wiener Philharmoniker is het gebruik van specifieke instrumenten met een eigen timbre en de bewust voortgezette traditie van het Weense classicisme. Het in 1842 opgerichte ensemble heeft het publiek altijd

al weten te fascineren, maar ook de grootste dirigenten en componisten, zoals Wagner, Brahms, Mahler, Strauss en Bruckner. Van die laatste vertolkt het in BOZAR de laatste grote voltooide symfonie. In de Achtste verkent de Oostenrijkse toondichter de absolute grenzen van de tonale muziek. Ze vormt er het ultieme sluitstuk van, met een tot in het extreme doorgetrokken muzikale logica. De concertavond heeft plaats twee jaar na de zware aardbeving in Japan die de kernramp in Fukushima veroorzaakte. Ter nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers staat ook de Scène met kraanvogels uit Kuolema op het programma, het symfonisch gedicht dat Sibelius schreef voor het gelijknamige toneelstuk van Arvid Järnefelt. De scène beeldt een kraanvogel uit – in de Japanse cultuur symbool voor lang leven en genezing – die als symbool van vernieuwing een kind brengt naar het jonge echtpaar van dit metaforische stuk. Een mooie gelegenheid om samen met ons eer te betonen aan het Japanse volk. (O.B.)

Chaque printemps, BOZAR MUSIC s’associe avec plaisir à Ars Musica, le festival bruxellois qui met la musique contemporaine à l’honneur. En 2013, Ars Musica fête son 25e anniversaire : l’occasion de revenir sur le passé, mais surtout de se tourner vers l’avenir.

Iván Fischer sera bientôt au Palais ! Le chef hongrois dirige son orchestre depuis des années et il suscite toujours autant d’enthousiasme. Public, presse, musiciens, tout le monde l’acclame. Sa sympathie n’est pas étrangère à cette popularité. Sur son blog vidéo (www.bfz.hu/en/category/blog), Fischer explique : « Lorsque des musiciens sont amenés à vivre ensemble, ils apprennent à connaître leurs points faibles respectifs. Il est essentiel d’identifier ce qui rend chacun d’entre eux tout à fait formidable. Lorsqu’on leur montre les bons côtés des autres musiciens, on parvient à former une équipe qui se sent bien et qui aime faire de la musique. » Cela ne doit pas faire oublier pour autant qu’Iván Fischer est un chef d’orchestre magistral. Pour ce concert, l’artiste a fait appel au hautboïste François Leleux. Ses atouts ? Un son pur, un style pétillant et inventif et de la réserve. (L.V.) FR

Komt Iván Fischer naar het Paleis, dan is het feest. De Hongaarse dirigent leidt zijn orkest sinds jaar en dag, en nog straalt het enthousiasme van hem af. Hij wordt bejubeld door publiek, pers en musici. Hoe doet hij dat toch? Allicht heeft zijn aimabele persoonlijkheid er veel mee te maken. Op zijn videoblog (www.bfz.hu/en/category/blog) vertelt Fischer vol vuur: “Wanneer musici samenleven, dan leren ze elkaars zwakke plekken kennen. Het is van cruciaal belang om te zoeken wat er aan elk van hen zo fantastisch is. Wijs hen op de goede kanten van anderen. Zo krijg je een blij team dat graag muziek maakt.” Muziek die vertrekt vanuit een goed gevoel, het is een mooie gedachte. Blijft natuurlijk het feit dat Iván Fischer gewoon een topdirigent is, punt uit. Voor dit concert nodigde hij hoboïst François Leleux uit. Zijn troeven? Le Palais accueille toujours avec plaisir le Quatuor Ébène. Avec Haydn, Mozart, Brahms ou Ravel, l'ensemble livre à chaque fois une interprétation impressionnante de grands quatuors à cordes. Depuis quelques années, les musiciens avaient envie de faire découvrir au public leur alter ego, L'Autre Ébène. Sous ce nom, ils présentent leur projet Fiction, un mélange de jazz et d'arrangements cross-over. « Nous voulons ainsi sensibiliser un public classique à une autre musique. À l'inverse, nous voulons aussi faire écouter du classique à un public branché pop et rock. Et si nous pouvons proposer un projet avec percussions et amplificateurs, par exemple, nous le faisons avec plaisir ! » Bruce Springsteen, Chick Corea ou Brad Mehldau, les Ébène ont des goûts éclectiques. Tout est dans le titre ! Le bassiste John Hébert a monté un projet afin de partager son admiration pour Charles Mingus. Ce dernier est considéré à juste titre comme le père de tous les bassistes modernes. Originaire de Louisiane – l’accent aigu sur son nom vient de ses ancêtres cajuns – Hébert est depuis une dizaine d’années l’un des piliers de la scène newyorkaise du jazz. Le pianiste du groupe n'est autre que Fred Hersch, (Hébert assure les cordes dans son trio), lui-même très admiratif de Jaki Byard, le pianiste de Mingus. Le saxophoniste Tim Berne, le trompettiste Taylor Ho Bynum et le batteur Ches Smith sont eux aussi des musiciens acclamés qui ont déjà fait le succès de nombreuses formations newyorkaises. Ensemble, ils font renaître le chaos orchestré et le sens de l’aventure de Mingus sur les derniers morceaux de Hébert. Épatant ! (GdH)

De titel zegt het helemaal. Om zijn bewondering voor Charles Mingus kenbaar te maken besloot bassist John Hébert een huldeproject op poten te zetten. Mingus geldt niet voor niets als de vader van alle moderne bassisten. Hébert komt uit Louisiana – het accent in zijn naam wijst op zijn cajunvoorvaderen – maar is sinds een jaar of tien een van de sterkhouders van de New Yorkse jazzscene. De pianist van het gezelschap is niemand minder dan Fred Hersch, in wiens trio Hébert aan de snaren plukt en die zelf Minguspianist Jaki Byard als zijn grote voorbeeld ziet. Ook saxofonist Tim Berne, trompettist Taylor Ho Bynum en drummer Ches Smith zijn gewaardeerde instrumentalisten die in talrijke formaties in New York het mooie weer maken. Samen brengen ze in nieuwe nummers van de hand van Hébert de georkestreerde chaos en zin voor avontuur van Mingus weer tot leven. Stomend! (GdH)

Passa Porta Festival Imagine ! La littérature dans le feu de l’actualité Imagine! – Literatuur in het brandpunt van de actualiteit

Fin mars, les amateurs de littérature déferleront à Bruxelles et BOZAR ne sera pas en reste ! Dans le cadre du Festival Passa Porta placé cette année sous le slogan Imagine ! des auteurs de renom seront les invités du Palais.

Une série de rencontres littéraires dans la salle Terarken fera le point sur les défis qui attendent les pays du Printemps arabe. Plusieurs auteurs de la région évoqueront leur combat contre la censure. Ibrahim Al-Koni, originaire de Libye, écrit des récits enracinés dans la culture touareg.

Tous prononceront un plaidoyer en faveur du pouvoir de l’imagination et ce n’est pas un luxe à une époque où l’actualité déborde de mauvaises nouvelles. Des écrivains de prestige s’arrêteront au Palais. L’auteur britannique francophile Julian Barnes, célèbre pour son Flaubert’s Parrot, nous parlera de son nouveau roman, The Sense of an Ending (Une fille, qui danse, lauréat du Booker Prize 2011). Le candidat au prix Nobel Cees Nooteboom est l’un des auteurs néerlandais les plus traduits et s’est forgé une excellente réputation en France. Ce globetrotter est aussi un grand amateur d’arts plastiques, comme le montre sa monographie de Zurbarán (en janvier 2014, BOZAR EXPO consacrera d’ailleurs une exposition à ce peintre). Deux ans après le succès retentissant de HHhH (prix Goncourt du premier roman), l’écrivain français Laurent Binet plonge au cœur de l’actualité. Avec Rien ne se passe comme

Eind maart wordt Brussel weer ingepalmd door de literatuurliefhebbers, en BOZAR blijft niet achter. In het raam van het Passa Porta Festival – dit jaar onder de slagzin Imagine! – zijn een reeks belangrijke auteurs in het Paleis te gast.

Stuk voor stuk houden ze een pleidooi voor verbeeldingskracht – bepaald geen luxe in een tijd waarin onheilstijdingen niet uit het nieuws zijn te slaan. De schrijvers die het Paleis aandoen, zijn niet van de minsten. De Britse auteur en francofiel Julian Barnes, bekend van het spraakmakende Flaubert’s Parrot, heeft het over zijn recente roman The Sense of an Ending (Alsof het voorbij is, winnaar van de Booker Prize 2011). Nobelprijskandidaat Cees Nooteboom is een van de meest vertaalde Nederlandse auteurs en geniet ook in Frankrijk een stevige reputatie. Dat deze globetrotter eveneens een groot hart heeft voor de beeldende kunsten mag o.m. blijken uit zijn Zurbarán-monografie (in januari 2014 wijdt BOZAR EXPO trouwens een tentoonstelling

The International Day of Happiness Et si l’on essayait d’être plus heureux ? En als we nu eens trachtten gelukkiger te zijn?

FR L’année dernière, l’Assemblée Générale de l’ONU a proclamé le 20 mars Journée internationale du bonheur, avec l’idée forte selon laquelle la recherche du bonheur était un objectif humain fondamental. Le Palais des Beaux-Arts s’associe à l’événement en proposant une soirée-débat autour de ce concept universel, en partenariat avec les Nations Unies.

Et s’il y avait une autre approche possible pour mesurer la richesse d’un pays que son Produit National Brut ? Et si un État veillait au bonheur de ses citoyens avec la même énergie qu’il en déploie pour sa prospérité ? C’est en substance le raisonnement de l’Assemblée Générale de l’Organisation des Nations Unies, découlant d’une initiative lancée par le petit royaume bouddhiste himalayen du Bhoutan, qui a adopté comme statistique officielle le Bonheur National Brut, à la place du Produit National Brut. Et pour concrétiser sa décision, l’ONU a proclamé le 20 mars Journée internationale du bonheur.

Comme d’autres institutions dans le monde, le Palais des Beaux-Arts s’associe à l’événement. Et pour plusieurs raisons. D’une part, la recherche du bonheur est une démarche fondatrice dans nos sociétés depuis les philosophes grecs. Elle occupe une place centrale dans l’art et la culture. D’autre part, la crise économique et sociale que traversent l’Europe et ses citoyens pose avec une acuité nouvelle la question du bien-être matériel et de la vision que l’on veut offrir à l’avenir de notre continent. Dans le contexte de l’Année européenne 2013 de la citoyenneté, ne peut-on pas trouver dès lors d’autres voies – spirituelles, relationnelles ou individuelles – pour créer de nouvelles formes de bonheur que la prospérité n’apporte pas toujours ou peut même parfois voiler ? Autant de questions cruciales abordées à l’occasion d’une projection suivie d’un débat autour de cette première Journée internationale du bonheur (20.03).

NL Het afgelopen jaar riep de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties 20 maart uit tot 'Internationale Dag van het Geluk'. De zoektocht naar geluk is een fundamenteel menselijk streven. In samenwerking met de Verenigde Naties presenteert het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten een debatavond rond dit universele concept.

En als we de rijkdom van een land nu eens niet met het bruto nationaal product maten? Wat als een land met dezelfde energie zou ijveren voor het geluk van zijn inwoners als voor hun welvaart? Dat is in essentie de denkwijze van de algemene vergadering van de Verenigde Naties, die hiervoor inspiratie vond in Bhutan (klein boeddhistisch land in het Himalayagebergte). Dat verving het bruto nationaal product als officieel statistisch gegeven door het bruto nationaal geluk. De VN-leden hebben dit gedachtegoed in een concrete vorm gegoten en 20 maart tot 'Internationale Dag van het Geluk' uitgeroepen. Net als heel wat andere

instellingen over de hele wereld steunt ook het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten dit initiatief. En daar zijn verschillende redenen voor. De zoektocht naar geluk vormt al sinds de oude Griekse filosofen de basis van de samenleving en neemt ook binnen kunst en cultuur een centrale plaats in. Bovendien doet de huidige economische en sociale crisis die Europa en zijn inwoners teistert nadenken over het materiële geluk en de toekomst van het continent. Nu 2013 (het Europese Jaar van de Burger) aangebroken is, kun je je afvragen of er geen andere spirituele, relationele of individuele wegen naar nieuwe vormen van geluk zijn. Welvaart staat nu eenmaal niet altijd gelijk met geluk en kan dat ook in de weg staan. Naar aanleiding van de eerste Internationale Dag van het Geluk (20.03) komen deze cruciale vragen tijdens een filmvertoning aan bod. Daarna volgt een debat. (O.B.)
