OUR MISSION

To inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, and entire Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos family, we are proud to present the 2020-2021 Annual Report. No one could have imagined the challenges that our country and the world would face this past year, but we are inspired by the strength and resilience displayed by our youth, and moved by all the ways our staff, community, and partners have come together to rally for local kids and families. Through the uncertain times, your decision to invest in Great Futures was more important than ever. Your commitment to local youth is the root of our Club’s strength and resilience. You made it possible to not only pivot, but to move forward and innovate new ways to serve the community—distributing thousands of emergency meals to local families, safely reopening to serve children of first responders and essential workers, connecting students with technology and social-emotional wellness resources, launching the Distance Learning Center, and more—all while still delivering our signature programs to help kids reach their full potential. As we look toward the future, we acknowledge that there is still much work to do. The equity gap has been widened and youth will undoubtedly face the effects of this pandemic for years to come. But we are ready to face the challenges ahead. Our Club is committed to continuing our mission-driven work with one goal: to do whatever it takes to ensure that every child has the tools they need to build a great future. Thank you, again, for building great futures alongside us.

YOUTH OF THE YEAR In February of 2021, Jared Diaz Barrios represented the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos in the San Diego County Youth of the Year competition alongside several outstanding teen members from neighboring Boys & Girls Clubs, ultimately earning the title of San Diego County Youth of the Year. Jared’s story of determination, commitment to the Club, and selfless service has made him a role model for fellow members. Introduced to the afterschool program at San Marcos Middle School in 2016, Jared is now 16 years old and attends the Teen Center at the Jennifer Loscher Branch on a daily basis. Aside from completing over 200 community service hours as an active member of the Club’s Leaders in Training program, Jared’s impressive resume includes maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Mission Hills High School, where he is active in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and plays setter for the JV volleyball team. His sights are set on attending UC Irvine with an ultimate goal to become a K9 officer with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

The Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos has definitely become a significant part of my life, a place that has taught me how to grow as a person and how to become a success. I’ve been lucky, fortunate, and blessed to be able to come to such an amazing place every day. - Jared Diaz Barrios, 2021 Youth of the Year

COVID-19 IMPACT When a shelter-in-place order was issued in March of 2020, Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos moved swiftly and with purpose, determined to continue serving the community in new and innovative ways. Throughout a brief closure, Club staff continued to engage with youth and families by distributing free grab & go meals, completing wellness checks, creating take-home activity packets, and establishing the Virtual Clubhouse with a library of online programs led by staff members who youth had grown accustomed to seeing on a daily basis — all while quickly working to create the Safe Reopening Plan to resume inperson services for Summer Day Camp.

DISTANCE LEARNING CENTER On August 18, 2020, Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos launched its Distance Learning Center at the main Jennifer Loscher Branch, pivoting services to best meet the needs of the community as the school year began with remote instruction. The Distance Learning Center remained open for the entire 2020-2021 school year, supporting working families by providing a safe space for students to attend virtual classes, offering homework help and tutoring, access to stable internet connection, assistance troubleshooting technology, social-emotional wellness supports and more.

Our family has always appreciated the role the Boys & Girls Club has played in our daughter’s development, but this year it has never been clearer the value it brings to our lives. My daughter has thrived in the [Distance Learning Center’s] small groups, and our family will forever be grateful! -JoAnn, Club Parent

BUILDING GREAT FUTURES

This fall, Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos is partnering with the City of San Marcos to open a brand-new standalone Clubhouse at 413 Autumn Drive, immediately serving up to 150 additional youth per day upon its opening. In the BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SAN MARCOS heart of the newly-revitalized Richmar neighborhood, a CAPITAL CAMPAIGN community working hard to rewrite its checkered history of gang violence and drug activity, we will create a new space where great futures start. The City has provided nearly 6,000 square feet of vacant building space and an additional $1.2 million for tenant improvements—truly an investment in the San Marcos community and its youth! Designed for both fun and function, the new Clubhouse will be outfitted with spaces to provide youth access to the tools to reach their full potential, bringing our successful Club experience to the young people in our community who need us most. When kids dream, they dream big—and so will we! To realize this dream, we need your help. Championed by our Board of Directors, we have launched a $2 million capital campaign to transform an empty concrete space into a welcoming and exciting Clubhouse that will have an immediate and lasting, positive impact on our community for generations to come. We invite you to join us in Building Great Futures!

The new Clubhouse on Autumn Drive will provide youth with access to the tools they need to build a brighter future, featuring: • Game Room - The heart of every Boys & Girls Club, which will include pool tables, air hockey, foosball tables and more • Performing Arts Area - Enabling youth to explore their creativity with a stage, lighting and state of the art sound system for performances • Maker Space - Providing access to tools, equipment, and supplies to encourage and foster curiosity, discovery, and learning • Learning Lab - Fully outfitted with technology and support for completing schoolwork and gaining skills for future careers • Tech Center - Offering access to cutting-edge technology, resources and training to make, create and innovate • Demonstration Kitchen - Promoting healthy lifestyles through cooking and nutrition education and resources

Every $1 invested in the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos generates a positive impact of up to $32 While the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos was operating at a loss of approximately $6,000 each month serving as a Distance Learning Center, the program was a critical resource for working families, a majority of whom were classified as essential workers, who otherwise would not have access to affordable childcare. In Spring of 2021, the Club partnered with the Senior Experience Program at California State University, San Marcos’ College of Business Administration to conduct an economic impact study to measure the tangible benefits that Club programs create in the local economy. The final report’s findings illustrated that each dollar invested in the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos returned between $26 and $32 in economic and social impacts.

I’m a single father and we don’t have any family in the area. I would be unemployed, and we would be homeless if the Boys & Girls Club wasn’t open. -BGCSM Parent
