What’s Ahead MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A six-game winning streak and a win over No. 8-ranked Wayne State highlighted the 201314 season for the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. The Dragons finished 16-11 overall and 12-10 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
All-NSIC Honors Seniors Morgan Zabel and Megan Strese each earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors in 2013-14. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC First Team while Strese was named to the All-NSIC Second Team. In 2012-13, Strese was a first-team selection while Zabel earned second-team honors.
The 16-11 record gives MSUM 14 straight winning seasons under Karla Nelson, who has never had a losing season as a head coach. Nelson is 240-159 at MSUM.
Records set The Dragons set three records in 2013-14: Individual free throw percentage (single-season): Meghan Roehrich (.897) Individual three-point percentage (single-season): Meghan Roehrich (.477) Team free throw percentage (single-season): (.798)
The Dragons started the season strong with a 4-0 mark, highlighted by wins over Wisconsin-Parkside (71-68) and then No. 23-ranked Michigan Tech (68-63) at the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic on Nov. 15-16. Senior Morgan Zabel was named MVP of the tournament. MSUM then lost four of its next six games to fall to 6-4, but rebounded with three straight wins, highlighted by an 81-68 home win over Concordia-St. Paul on Jan. 10. The Dragons then dropped four of five -- with the one win being a 75-70 victory at Minnesota Duluth -- to fall to 10-8 on the year. MSUM reversed its fortunes starting with an unbeaten four-game homestand, which included wins over Upper Iowa, Winona State, St. Cloud State and MinnesotaDuluth. The Dragons then hit the road and recorded big wins at Augustana and then a 61-50 victory at No. 8 Wayne State to stretch the winning streak to six and move their record to 16-8. The regular-season ended with tough losses to Minot State and Mary at home, putting MSUM on the road in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. The Dragons battled tough at Augustana before losing 90-79. MSUM will graduate three seniors -- Megan Strese, Haley Thomforde and Morgan Zabel. The team will return several letterwinners in 2013-14, including Meghan Roehrich, who was third on the team in scoring this season, and Savanna Handevidt and Morgan Banasik, both of whom started all 27 games for the Dragons this season.
Century Club The three Dragon seniors -- Megan Strese, Haley Thomforde and Morgan Zabel -- all have surpassed 100 games played at MSUM. Strese and Zabel finished 109 games each (tied for 10th all-time in school history) while Thomforde is at 107. Strese and Zabel Join 1,000-Point Club Megan Strese became the Dragons’ 20th player to reach 1,000 career points during MSUM’s loss to No. 17 Minnesota State on Jan. 11, 2014. Strese scored less than two minutes into the game to surpass 1,000 for her career. She finished with 1,228 career points, 11th-best all-time. Days later, Zabel became the 21st women’s player to hit 1,000 career points with her basket in the closing minutes in the win over Winona State on Feb. 1. Zabel finished at 1,115 points for her career, 15th-best in school history. Thomforde Finishes in Top 5 in Assists Thomforde climbed into the top 10 in career assists earlier this season and finished with 336 career assists, fifth-best in school history. The senior point guard also finished with 762 career points and 381 career rebounds. Dragons Rank in Free Throws MSUM ranks third in the nation in free-throw percentage at 79.8 percent. Roehrich is 10th in the nation at 89.7 percent.

COACHING RESUME • Karla Nelson was promoted to head coach in March of 2000, becoming the 12th Women’s Basketball Coach in the 46 year history of the program. • 2012-13 is her 19th year in coaching at MSUM and the 13th as a head coach. • The fastest coach in MSUM basketball history to reach 200 wins. • Nelson served as a coach at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years prior to arriving at MSUM. • Played four seasons of basketball at the University of North Dakota, twice being honored as UND’s Best Defensive Player.

The 2013-14 season will be Karla Nelson’s 14th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 13 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success. Nelson has 13 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 14 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -including in all 13 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 224-148 in 13 seasons. Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools. Nelson has also coached 30 all-conference honorees in 13 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four AllAmerican teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010. The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Junior Morgan Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection. The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09. The Dragons of 2004-05 led the nation in rebounding for a second time in five years after a fifth-place finish in 2003-04. The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota. In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season. A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM, where she was an assistant coach from 1994-2000.
