True Transformation A DEVOTIONAL BY: JEFF INGRAM

I

believe it is significant that the only time the word translated “transformed” is used in all the gospels is on what we call the mountain of transfiguration where Jesus was transfigured before His disciples and His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light.

What a beautiful picture of something completely new, completely different but still recognizable. This something new, something different begins with a renewal of the mind. The renewing of the mind is that space and time where your will is brought into agreement with the Father’s will. His thoughts become your thoughts and His ways become your ways. This process of renewal, and make no mistake about it – it is a process, is intimately connected with the Word of God but it does not stop there.

Much like a treasure map has value because it leads to

something greater, the Word of God also has value because it leads to the One who is greater.

It is this One who brings about renewal of our minds which leads to transformation within our lives.

We must also remember the subtle but significant point that renewal of our minds is not simply changing our minds but rather actively exchanging one thing for another. It is both natural and supernatural.

Renewal of the mind is replacing fallible worldly knowledge and logic with the infallible knowledge and logic of God’s truth.

We ignore the truth of God at our own peril. We must realize that God isn’t trying to get us to embrace His will because it does Him good, but rather because it does us good. Much as a doctor prescribes medicine not for his benefit but for the benefit of the patient. Simply put, we are all different in our thinking to one degree or another whether

we realize it or not and we desperately need our orientation of both heart and mind.

You see, God doesn’t just desire any transformation – He desires true transformation.

True transformation leads to a reality; wrong transformation leads to a false reality. True transformation leads to healing; wrong transformation leads to brokenness. True transformation leads to Life; wrong transformation leads to death. But this authentic, lifechanging, and life-giving true transformation follows proper renewal of the mind.

oyd Buchanan is dedicated to building spiritual growth and inspire a spirit of servanthood in students, faculty, and families. Spiritual life is not just a segment of our day; it is how we seek to live every day.

All three schools seek to provide a spiritually enriching environment through worship, the Word, and volunteer work.

s we further the 67-year legacy of academic excellence at Boyd Buchanan School, there are many plans to enhance the learning experiences of students in the coming years.

Classes where students are building trebuchets, competing in boat races on Buccaneer pond, experimenting in engineering and science labs, and engaging in S.T.E.A.M. activities all encourage creative and critical thinking in our students.

Looking ahead to what our BBS community of learners need to know, we see an opportunity to develop programs of study that prepare students for a diverse society filled with professions that currently do not exist. The fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (S.T.E.A.M.) will continue to grow and change offering a wide array of careers that we want our students to be prepared to create and conquer with joy, courage, and wisdom.

In order to ensure that BBS graduates are prepared for the selective colleges and universities of today, we must provide pathways of learning that adequately meet the rigorous standards necessary to gain acceptance to colleges and universities across the nation.

To prepare students for this journey, we will also identify and implement the most current and innovative professional development for faculty. In the BBS vision for the future, it is essential that we train students

to be expert learners and problem solvers. This begins in the elementary school and is embedded in the secondary school culture. The addition of career pathway programs will further bolster the multitude of options for BBS students at every level.

With strengthening of the academic program alongside the various extracurricular opportunities available to students, Boyd Buchanan will continue to be the rare and special place that God blesses and oversees.

BBS RECEIVES FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA DESIGNATION

n March 2018, BBS announced it recently became a chapter of the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) as part of the Tennessee FFA Association. According to FFA officials, Boyd Buchanan is the first-ever independent school FFA Chapter in the state of Tennessee. “After years of cultivating our agri-science program through our on-site farm known as Blue Thumb

S.T.E.A.M. AHEAD

T

he vision for S.T.E.A.M. began for BBS alumni, Jason Owens, when he was hired in 2005.

In his first year of teaching he launched the Trebuchet catapult competition in the

high school. "We were following S.T.E.A.M. priniciples before it became

mainstream, says High School Principal Renee Hood. BBS hosts many S.T.E.A.M. events throughout the year including the Physics boat races, engineering labs, and robotics competitions. "Even the agri-science program is part of S.T.E.A.M.," Hood adds. As Dr. Warnack

transitioned to be the Dean of Academics she alongside the principals set forth a vision to create a K-12 school-wide 'S.T.E.A.M. Day' planned for the 2019 spring semester. "I'm most excited about the high-quality instruction the students will be receiving that will better prepare them for the

core curriculum. For example, the middle school is in it's fourth year of applying Reader-Writer's Workshop. This workshop influences student learning in reading and writing by allowing teachers to individualize instruction as students work independently to meet goals. Students participate in peer conferences and individualized teacher conferences intended to

tailor learning and improve critical thinking across all learning. Middle school students also work directly with elementary students as part of our peer-topeer reading and writing program to help build basic skills and confidence.

Elementary students use Google ChromeBooks in an exploratory approach to prepare them for secondary school.

PRINCIPAL'S SUPPORT A STRONG CULTURE FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES

T

he fact that 72% of BBS middle and high School students participate in athletics is a strong number that continues to grow each year.

Since 1952, athletics have been the "physical" aspect of the BBS mission, "to fully nurture the physical potential of each student." There are several exceptional benefits to participating in sports. The three schools are committed to this growth from elementary to high school.

Mrs. Hood is passionate about the fact that student athletes have "dual careers" which provides motivation for training and preparation, stimulating athletes intellectually and relieving various forms of stress.

Dr. Bischell believes that athtletics can help build self-discipline and a sense of camaraderie that is amplified far beyond the classroom.

Elementary Principal, Mrs. Risley, is committed to growing athletics in the elementary with the support of new elementary A.D., Todd Ledbetter. She believes BBS uses sports as a measure to help each student grow as Jesus did, in wisdom and stature, and in favor of God and man.

uccaneer athletics has a long history of top teams, athletes, and coaches. The 2017-18 school year was a time of transformational growth and enhancements within the BBS athletics program.

The transformation started before hiring Tommy Brown as Director of Athletics. As President and Head of School, Jill C. Hartness, boldly reminds us, "Timing is not ours, it belongs to God," President Hartness, Trustees, leadership, and coaches had the vision to grow and develop athletics with a fresh perspective.

God was once again on the move and Boyd Buchanan athletics started to change.

Boyd Buchanan School boasts a tradition of excellence in athletics. My vision is for our head varsity coaches to have a vertical approach with our athletic programs, which for us means a K-12 approach. We want each head coach to be responsible for the development of their sport for the entire institution. Dustin Walker, head varsity soccer coach, is a great example of this. He takes a

vested interest in all soccer programs at BBS including the elementary summer camps.

SILENT AUCTION ItEMS Last March, we followed the yellow Buc road to an emerald city themed school-wide spring auction at Stratton Hall. Over $20,000 was raised through live and silent auctions.

Monies raised from the auction go towards immediate needs across each school, such as classroom and facility upgrades, academics, athletics, and community-related projects.

MATT HOGAN, '11 Director of Partnerships, Q Conference Boyd Buchanan Young Alumni Annual Fund Chair

"Boyd Buchanan was a foundation for my life. Putting athletics, academics, and the beautiful campus aside - BBS helped frame my worldview, and out of that worldview came a love for God and others. The BBS community does this exceptionally well and I’ve taken that with me 8 years since I left the campus. BBS is uniquely positioned to speak life and hope into our

community and to our neighbors, and that’s why Hannah and I continue to serve and support President Hartness and the rest of the BBS family. Simply put: BBS is a family. It doesn't matter if you’re an alumni or not, grandparent, local business owner, or current student - you can always come home. Most importantly, Hannah and I were

married last April and have been living in Franklin, TN. When I am not working as the Director of Partnerships for Q Conference, we visit Chattanooga often to support my sister, Gracie, at BBS. I am thrilled to serve in this Young Alumni role and look forward to fostering existing and new relationships at BBS."

Congratulations to BBS Alumni WILL HEALY, '03

W

ill Healy, '03 an Eddie Robinson Award winner as the National FCS Coach of the Year, has been selected as the head football coach for the Charlotte 49ers. Healy, who has coached at Austin Peay State University for the last three years, is known for infusing energy and enthusiasm in his program, engineering one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history. A gifted recruiter, he has helped attract top five FCS recruiting classes in four of the last five years.

Healy spent seven years as an assistant coach at the University

of Tennessee at Chattanooga before taking over as head coach at Austin Peay.

Healy was a two-time all-state quarterback at Boyd Buchanan High School. He was named all-state honorable mention twice and was a four-time allregion selection. A Tennessee "Mr. Football" finalist as a senior, Healy holds the Chattanooga area career passing record with more than 7,700 yards. Healy comes home to Chattanooga often to visit family and stop by Boyd Buchanan. He remains passionate about BBS Athletics and supports the school in various ways.
