Boulder County Events: What to do and where to go

LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL. 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., Boulder, 303-786-7030.

JOEY MARTINEZ

When Willie Nelson is your dad, you know a thing or two about hittin’ the road, about playing guitar... about legacy. In fact, Lukas Nelson understands legacy so well that he knows better than to rely on the legacy of his family name, so he’s spent some time showing folks what he’s got to offer, blending rock ‘n’ roll, country, soul, folk and R&B into original songs with his band, Promise of the Real. And when he’s not busy doing that, he’s leading Neil Young’s band, or making BAFTA-winning soundtracks with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for ‘A Star is Born.’ Nelson’s newest album, ‘Turn off The News,’ showcases his musical range and appeal with cameos from Neil Young, Margo Price, Kesha, Lucius and, of course, the Redheaded Stranger himself, Willie. —CR

MODERN MASTERS: TAYLOR & WHEELDON. Friday, Feb. 21-Feb. 23, Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut St., Boulder, 303-440-7826.

Taylor choreographed 147 dances between 1954 and 2018, pre- miering his last work only a few months before his death at the age of 88. Boulder Ballet will also premiere ‘Five Movements, Three Repeats,’ an example of English choregrapher Christopher Wheeldon’s signature blend of ballet and modern dance, set to music by Max Richter and Dinah Washington. ‘DAVEY, DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT?’ 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, Muse Performance Space, 200 E. South Boulder Road, Lafayette, 720-352- 4327.

Based on the true accounts of trapped miners and their days deep underground in a Pennsylvania coal mine, ‘Davey, Do You See the Light?’ is an epic poem, an Americana folk concert and a mesmerizing multimedia experience. Created by Denver songwriter Jim Broyles, it’s also a personal telling of a childhood memory and an unexpected voyage to dimensions beyond this world. Jim (guitar) is joined on stage by Steef Sealy (banjo), Chris Sealy (mandolin), Benjamin Cowhick (bass) and Luke Halpin (fiddle). Together, they present an emotionally engaging tale in rhyming verse, woven together by a collection of original songs with elegant harmonies and vivid instrumentation. Tickets are $15 at coloradoboxoffice. com. CITIZENS’ CLIMATE BENEFIT FEATURING LATE FOR SUPPER. 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Nissi’s, 2675 Northpark Drive, Lafayette, 303-993-5431.

THERE IS A REASON why visitors to Demry Frankenheimer’s studio have been known to weep in front of her art. Using specific, unusual methods and tactile materials as her vocabulary, Frankenheimer has developed an elegant yet visceral artistic language that strives to visually capture and articulate the world within her and around her. The juxtaposition of these materials give Frankenheimer the ability, she says, to “write what I see and sense.” ‘The Ties That Bind: Demry Frankenheimer,’ is on display at Bricolage Gallery at Art Parts Creative Reuse Center Feb. 21-April 4.

For 50 years, Agnès Varda lived on Paris’ Rue Daguerre, a quiet street of merchants not far from Montparnasse. She saw the men and women (mostly husbands and wives) who ran the shops, cut the hair, baked the bread and carved the meat. What are their stories? Varda wondered, and with her trusty camera, she took to the street, photographed their faces and hands, asked for their tales, and preserved these perfectly ordinary Parisians for future historians, sociologists and archeologists. Forty-plus years later, we are the archeologists investigating those faces, most of whom are long since dead. As is Varda. But, as long as there is electricity to power projectors, their faces will never fade. Such is the beauty of cinema, and ‘Daguerreotypes’ — a play on the street’s name and an early form of photography — feels closer to the daguerreotypes of the 19th century than it does to the commerce of ours. Simultaneously enchanting and tragic, Varda allows a neighborhood magician to preside over her documentary, further emphasiz- ing cinema’s hypnotic powers. Culminating with a silent curtain call of the rue’s shopkeepers, ‘Daguerreotypes’ is a work of kindness and curios- ity that will leave you breathless. —MJC

‘SHOCKHEADED PETER’ is a delightfully macabre adaptation of 19th-century German children’s book ‘Der Struwwelpeter.’ The book recounts several varieties of misbehaving children and their dreadful ends. This punk opera adaptation, which opened on the West End in London in 1998 and ran for several world tours, cranks up both the comedy and Grand Guignol to 11. In artistic director Amanda Berg Wilson’s multi-generational, immersive staging, The Catamounts will examine how terrifying parenting can be, especially when we try and let children be their strange, independent selves. Showing now through March 7 at the Dairy Arts Center.
