The State of Boulder’s Urban Forest Over the past year, we’ve talked with you about trees - Boulder’s trees. The trees that line our streets and beautify our parks. The Urban Forest Strategic Plan (UFSP) outlines a long-term strategy for making our tree canopy more sustainable and resilient in the face of serious threats from insect pests, weather events and climate change. Join us Saturday, March 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Upslope Brewing Company, 1898 South Flatiron Court (off Central Avenue) to learn about the plan, share your thoughts before it goes to city council, and meet volunteers working on this effort including the PLAY Boulder Foundation Tree Trust. For more information about Boulder’s urban trees and plan, visit BoulderForestry.org.

Boulder’s Outdoor Aquatic Facilities Are Changing! We’re diving head-first into the deep end on two major outdoor aquatic facility improvement projects set to begin sometime this summer or fall (after the 2018 summer season)! After a culmination of extensive research, community input and planning, the Scott Carpenter Pool facilities will be completely renovated/replaced prior to a projected re-opening in 2019. Thank you, Boulder voters and PLAY Boulder Foundation for supporting the efforts to approve its funding! Likewise, the Boulder Reservoir’s Visitor Service Center will undergo a major improvement project beginning this fall. The decades-old structure will be replaced to better serve visitors and the community. Additional planning is also underway for future phases of the Reservoir’s Site Management Plan. Now is the time to provide your input and ideas your desires for the reservoir’s future. For details, visit BoulderParkNews.org.

O

ver the last decade, obesity rates, especially among children, are on the rise in Colorado and Boulder. That’s why Boulder Parks and Recreation (BPR) has committed to improving our community’s health and well-being through ensuring that our facilities and programs offer the latest designs, equipment and techniques for attracting and engaging young people. Our parks offer numerous health benefits like encouraging residents to get outdoors, interact with nature, be physically active and interact with neighbors. Did you know that in the 1970’s a similar conversation about physical education and activity, drove the creation of one of Boulder’s favorite parks: Arapahoe Ridge Park (ARP), affectionately known as “Rock Park?” The park’s property was deeded to the city in 1970 as part of the development of what is now known as the Arapahoe Ridge neighborhood. ARP’s design was influenced by its proximity to Eisenhower Elementary School. The city collaborated with Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) to develop active recreational play features and facilities complimentary to the school’s existing playground and physical education program. The two organizations entered an agreement to enhance the district’s land around the school with the installation of two backstops, sod, irrigation, and a fencing design allowing visitors to flow between the two properties and enjoy the unique sports fields, tennis courts, and play features found there. Likewise, ARP’s distinctive play area, featuring a multi-level network of natural rock tunnels and baby crag has attracted and engaged kids for the past 35 years, earning it the “rock park” nickname. Intent on making the most of the 5-acre, “L-shaped” park site at 1220 Eisenhower Drive (NE of the school), the original playground design featured four play areas, separated by a concrete ramp and wooden bridge, yet connected by crawl tunnels, a slide and the mini-mountain of jumbled boulders. The result has become a play haven attracting children from across Boulder to explore, climb, hide, play and exercise in imaginative ways. Since original construction completed in 1973, “Rock Park” has continued to evolve. In 1989, the wood bridge bisecting the play area and wood tower were removed due to deterioration and splintering. Most recently, BPR refreshed this favorite community park once more. In 2016, the department led a robust public engagement process seeking input on replacing aging infrastructure and improving playground equipment to meet current industry standards. Construction started in 2017 and this May, the city will host a park opening to celebrate the renovated park which incorporated the community’s ideas – including protecting the beloved rock feature. Next time you play here, you’ll find the recently reinforced, iconic natural rock structure still invites children to explore its nooks, crannies, and kid-sized tunnels. You’ll also enjoy new playground equipment, rubber surfacing, refurbished shade shelter, updated picnic tables, bike racks and more. For more information about Arapahoe Ridge Park and its re-opening celebration, please visit BoulderParkNews.org.

Featured Program: Adult Sports Leagues

Team up to have a ball.

T

here may be a dozen good reasons why you should stay at work a bit later: finish a project, get a jump on a report, reply to an email, avoid doing your taxes . . . But there are also a couple compelling reasons to grab your hat and head for the door. One of them is not letting your team down. So – what are you waiting for? Ping your friends, your coworkers, your neighbors, your FB, Instagram and Snap Chat cohorts and form a team around your favorite game. We’ve got leagues for sports you may not have played in years – or ever – and you can still play and have a total blast. Whether you’re in Boulder on a few-months assignment or you’re in for life, you don’t wanna miss this opportunity to play in one of the most active, diverse and exciting community sports leagues on the Front Range (or maybe even the West). Seriously, whether you’re looking for new ways to have fun with friends or co-workers, meet new, active adults or just enjoy playing your favorite team sport, BPR adult leagues offer an active brand of fun for just about everyone – including individuals and free agents seeking teams. You’ll play on great fields and courts, have fun (win or lose), and maybe, if you’re 21, grab an adult beverage after you play.

So, what’s your game? Softball • Soccer • Basketball Kickball (outdoor and indoor) • Dodgeball Volleyball (outdoor and indoor) There’s truly something for everyone as our most popular leagues offer divisions for both recreational and competitive players. So, gather your team, or let us help you find one, and start playing more and working (a little less). For more information on all our 2018 sport leagues seasons, see pages 22-27 in the Summer Camps & Sports Leagues insert in the center of this BPR Guide. Remember to register early, while spots are still available for each season’s popular leagues.

Intro to Kripalu Yoga

Kripalu Yoga is a unique approach to yoga that emphasizes the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. In this introductory workshop, students will learn about the three stages of Kripalu Yoga: Willful Practice, which emphasizes postural alignment and coordination of breath and movement; Willful Surrender, where postures are held for prolonged periods to promote muscle strength, develop concentration, and release deep-seated emotional and mental tensions; and Surrender to the Wisdom of the Body, also known as, meditation in motion, where both mind and body are deeply relaxed and free to move spontaneously from one posture to another. As a tool for self-empowerment and personal growth, Kripalu yoga also teaches you to tap into your own inner knowing and develop an intimate and nurturing relationship with your body. Participants will be led through a series of postures and breathing practices and take home tools that they can incorporate into any hatha yoga practice to promote health and well-being. 11939

Drop-in classes are focused on practicing all levels of yoga and can be found online at BoulderYoga.org • As a beginner we suggest the following classes, Beginner Yoga, Gentle Kripalu Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga or Restorative.

Mind/Body:

Yoga

Continuing Yoga

Therapeutic Yoga

This ongoing level is for anyone who has studied yoga for 6 months or more and wishes to advance their practice beyond the beginner level. Classes review the fundamentals and variations with longer holdings and greater focus on the subtleties of alignment. Poses such as headstand, shoulder-stand and backbends are introduced. More time is devoted to pranayama (breath control and meditation). Students proceed to the more advanced poses when they are ready. Alternatives are provided for those with physical limitations (eg., headstand is not suitable for everyone).

Explore gentle, safe, focused yoga motions and postures, the purpose of which is to find balance between mind, muscles, physiology and kinesiology. Suitable for those recovering from injury and/or surgery, those with limited range of motion or anyone wanting a gentle introduction to yoga.

Iyengar Yoga - Beginner Learn the fundamentals of Iyengar yoga. Instructors give clear demonstrations of the postures and emphasize detail, precision and alignment in the postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama). Students are observed and, if necessary, adjusted to help them find their optimal alignment. Props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both novices and regular practitioners alike. Modifications to the classic yoga postures can be made for individual students. 10918

Mind/Body Chi Kung

Qigong (also spelled Chi Kung) is a form of yoga with roots in ancient China. Its many benefits include physical health and vitality, emotional wellbeing, mental clarity, and the unfolding of our deepest potential. A regular qigong practice may, over time, reduce chronic pain, resolve anxiety/depression, and support rejuvenating sleep cycles. This course, perfect for beginners and more advanced practitioners alike, will introduce the joyful and powerful practice of qigong by exploring the ten stages of qi cultivation. Each class will combine breathing and visualization exercises with gentle movements that stretch muscles and tendons, and circulate qi (life force) through the meridians (channels of body awareness also used in acupuncture). By the end of the course, you will have learned ten life-affirming and health-enhancing qigong practices. 10908

T’ai-Chi Ch’uan - Beginner

Doing this gentle martial art increases energy and circulation, improves balance, strengthens the spine and internal organs, and promotes general life-long health. This is an introduction to the short form Yang style of t’ai-chi ch’uan as taught by Prof. Cheng Man-ch’ing. The beginner level, the first third, will be taught in both courses. 10922

Feldenkrais® Practicing the Feldenkrais Method® helps students move with more ease, coordination and freedom from pain. Subtle, slow movements are experienced while lying down, standing or sitting in a chair. The Feldenkrais Method® is a re-education of the nervous system and the physical body. Lock Policy

Patrons are urged to bring a lock to secure valuables. The city of Boulder is NOT responsible for lost or stolen property. Lockers are available for day use only.

Punch Pass Terms & Benefits

Includes open swim and gym, drop-in fitness/yoga, weight rooms, outdoor pools and reservoir entries. Punch Passes expire two years after purchase date.

Class Visitor Pass

This pass allows you to drop into a registered class, if space is available. Cards can be purchased at centers and are valid for six months from date of purchase for the following programs: Adult Dance, Yoga, Pilates Mat and Swiss Ball. $70 for 5 classes

Why Register Now?

Why wait – when you can lead the way? TODAY is the best day to register for the classes you want. Why? Because under-enrolled classes get cancelled and might be dropped entirely to make space for more popular programs. Registering early is the best way to prevent your favorite class from cancellation. This year, we’ll be increasing our adherence to minimum enrollment standards to enhance our efficient use of staff, space and funding. Under-enrolled classes will be cancelled prior to the first session. Thanks for registering today!

Class Size

Limits have been placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first come, first served. Register early to ensure a place in the classes you want. Class enrollments are reviewed 3-5 days prior to the first class and those with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled. Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation program or activity.

Group Discount Program

Discounted rates are available for businesses and organizations with five or more employees. For information call Christy Munoz at 303-413-7259 or visit BoulderParks-Rec.org

In an Emergency What’s Our Plan?

The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department operates many programs and facilities for the Boulder community. We know that under rare circumstances, extreme weather or other situations have the potential to impact our operations, facilities and patrons. In an emergency, staff will follow plans and procedures designed to ensure the safety of participants. A plan has been tailored to each specific site and facility we manage. In the event of an emergency requiring the relocation of participants, program leaders will communicate their actions and evacuation location (once practical) to department communication staff. This information will be uploaded to the city’s Website (www.bouldercolorado.gov) and be added to the city’s emergency information phone line at 303-441-4300 as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Department’s emergency plans, please call 303-413-7200.

Access for All

Boulder Parks and Recreation is committed to supporting people of all abilities in recreation through both specialized and inclusive programs. We strive to exceed the requirements set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act and to create a welcoming and supportive community. If you require an accommodation, please notify us at least two weeks in advance. For more information, contact Lori Goldman at 303-413-7256.

Children Under 12

For your child’s safety and well-being, the city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department requests that children under 12 years of age not be left unsupervised at any recreation facility, or outdoor pool. It is acceptable to leave children participating in organized classes or programs, as they are under the care of an adult program leader or instructor.

Photographs & Model Release By entering Boulder Parks and Recreation facilities or participating in our programs, you agree that photographs, digital images or video of you and your family-members may be created and used for future promotional or marketing material by the City of Boulder without prior consent or monetary compensation. Photography/videography of facility users or program participants by unauthorized individuals is prohibited. Thank you for your cooperation.

Acknowledgment of Risk / Waiver of Liability As a condition of use of any City of Boulder Parks and Recreation facility or participation in any program, sports league, class, recreation or fitness activity, you agree as a participant or parent/guardian of a participant in the program, to assume all risks and hazards of engaging in or spectating at any city activity or facility, including assuming all risks for personal injury, death and property damage. You further agree to hold harmless the City of Boulder, its staff, instructors, volunteers, officials, sponsors, partners or representatives from liability for any losses, damages or injuries that may occur in any way as a result of these activities or facility uses – regardless of cause. You further certify that you are properly prepared to engage in any activities you have selected and that you have recently consulted a physician to establish that it is safe and appropriate for you to engage in these activities. Participants (or the parents/guardians of minor children) may also be required to complete a medical health history and/ or sign an additional waiver of liability prior to participation in any programs or classes. Anyone recovering from an injury or illness must first discuss their return to physical activity with their physician and Parks and Recreation instructor prior to enrolling/participating. Therefore, having read and understood this waiver and in consideration of your accepting my entry into a City of Boulder recreation facility or program, I, for myself and anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release the City of Boulder, all staff, volunteers, sponsors, and representatives from all claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in (or as a spectator of) any program or use of any facility. Volunteerism

Honoring Youth Volunteer Emily Arnow

I

n April 2014, Emily Arnow began volunteering with Boulder’s EXciting Programs Adventures and New Dimensions (EXPAND) program. EXPAND enhances the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families in our community by helping them gain and improve new recreation skills. Since starting, Emily has attended almost every Friday Night Fun social activity event, spent the night at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo with participants, developed adaptive gymnastics routines, and served many other programs.

In fact, Emily has dedicated more than 500 hours to the organization – an impressive feat, given that Emily is just 14 years old. With her abundant joy and enthusiasm, Emily’s energy has made an enormous impact on EXPAND’s youth programs over the past three years. When new participants join, Emily is the Boulder Parks and Recreation’s (BPR) “go-to” volunteer as she has a knack for making each person feel welcome and included. Additionally, Emily has an amazing ability to see the good and positive gifts of participants, staff and other volunteers – bringing out the best in everyone. Recently, Emily expressed a desire to assist with a youth dance class including EXPAND participants. When asked about the class, she said, “I heard a lot of participants talking about how they loved to dance, yet realized they didn’t have a class to take at the moment.” To fill the programming gap, Emily rounded up six dancers from her dance studio to assist. She is now choreographing a dance that will incorporate dancers of all abilities. Now, BPR is excited to offer “A Chance to Dance,” and Emily is the reason this class is happening. The department recently recognized Emily for significant contributions as a youth volunteer in EXPAND’s Peer Mentoring Program on Feb. 22, 2018, at the Boulder Parks and Recreation’s Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. Emily truly embodies many qualities of a leader and the city’s values of respect, integrity and innovation. When asked about takeaways from her volunteering experience, Emily mentioned, “I have made so many amazing friendships through this program that will stick with me forever.” BPR and EXPAND are truly grateful to Emily for her time, passion and enthusiasm. We are excited for her to continue sharing her time, energy, and talents with EXPAND long into the future. Thank you, Emily Arnow, for making Boulder a more welcoming community for people of all abilities. Volunteers are an integral part of the City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department. If you are interested in learning more about the many opportunities to volunteer your time and energy with us, please visit BPRVolunteer.org.

Community Connections

Understanding How PRAB Works for You

B

oulder Parks and Recreation’s mission is to promote community health and well-being. To be successful, we need you – your participation in our programs, use of our parks and facilities, and your engagement in our planning. We need you to help shape our parks, facilities and programs and stay aligned with the community’s values and needs. That’s why we strive to provide a variety of ways to involve you, our residents. One important way is through the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB).

What is the PRAB? BPR’s advisory board (PRAB) consists of seven members appointed by City Council. These members are residents of the city, do not hold any other city office and serve five-year volunteer terms. They are passionate about parks and recreation and care about the community. From their diverse backgrounds and experiences, they offer a variety of interests and expertise. They also represent you! The board’s purpose is to advise us on our programs and operations. Among its duties, the board: • Offers advice to City Council and city departments on the acquisition, construction and maintenance of park property; • Coordinates policy on the development and use of recreational facilities; and, • Approves expenditures from the Permanent Park and Recreation Fund.

How Do I Engage with PRAB? Advisory Board members enjoy hearing from the community about Boulder’s parks and recreation system. You can tap into the power of PRAB and be heard by: • Staying Informed. Each monthly PRAB meeting includes a packet with the agenda, and information for PRAB’s action, discussion, or information. These packets are available online

PRAB members taking a tour of the new Civic Area.

3-5 days before the meeting and are a great way to know about current and future BPR initiatives. • Attending a Meeting. Board meetings are open to the public and provide a great way to learn about the department’s latest action items. The schedule is online. • Speaking at a Meeting. You may provide up to three minutes of comment on a Parks and Recreation matter scheduled for public hearing or matter not scheduled for a hearing. To speak, just sign in with the PRAB liaison before the meeting. Following-Up. You are welcome to follow up on the matter you brought forth. A summary of your comments will appear in the meeting’s recorded minutes. You may also follow up at a subsequent meeting or by contacting PRAB members or department staff directly. • Volunteering. Each board member serves a five-year term. If you are interested in serving on the board, apply! Board and commission recruitment occurs each February. For more information about PRAB and monthly agenda packets, please visit BoulderParks-Rec.org. PRAB meets the fourth Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers unless otherwise noted.

Now & Then As you continue your neighborhood walk, imagine what this means for Boulder and your neighborhood. For cooling shade, for oxygen production and CO2 absorption, for storm water filtration and mitigation, bird habitat and just good old serene beauty.

What can be done?

Our Tree Canopy Look around. This spring, once the trees leaf out, take a stroll around your neighborhood and look up. What do see? Notice any trees or branches that look lifeless? Do the dead-looking limbs appear damaged from winter winds or storms – or do they appear intact, just stuck in dormancy? Don’t be surprised if you spot quite a few. Odds are, you’ll be looking at an ash tree showing signs of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation and decline.

Do get alarmed. Nearly one in every seven trees in Boulder is an ash – and it’s projected EAB will likely kill nearly 100 percent of our untreated Ash population within the next ten years. Boulder has an estimated 70,000 ash trees which constitutes approximately 15 percent of our overall “urban canopy”. That means we’re at risk for losing up to 70,000 of our trees within ten years! Prior to 2013, Boulder Parks & Recreation’s Forestry unit removed an average of 250 trees per year. Since then, removals have increased to nearly 800 trees each year – and these are just from trees in our city parks and public rights of way (such as along streets). Forestry estimates these numbers will continue to rise due to EAB, severe weather events like the 2014 freeze and 2016 spring snowstorms, and the continued decline of historic silver maples in Mapleton Hill, University Hill, and Whittier neighborhoods. It’s further estimated that some neighborhoods with the highest concentrations of ashes may see a canopy loss approaching 30 percent.

62

As a city, we’re taking a number of steps to address this serious threat to our urban canopy. We’re aggressively treating or removing our public ash trees. We’re planting (and caring for) a new, more species diverse generation of trees. And we’re selectively treating as many of our high value (larger, healthier) ash trees to improve their EAB resistance. Perhaps most importantly, we’re planning a major community education and engagement campaign aimed at activating every Boulder resident around keeping Boulder a leafy place for years to come. You see, about 75 percent of Boulder’s ash trees are on private property. That means nearly 50,000 of the trees that will be impacted by EAB belong to our neighbors and landlords, not the city. So, the only way to ensure as green and leafy a future as we enjoy today is for us to all work together to support our urban canopy.

What can you do? Over the coming months, Parks & Recreation and our nonprofit partner, the Play Boulder Foundation will be hosting several events to share information and recruit volunteers to help develop and promote a tree action plan for Boulder. It will be based on the city’s new Urban Forestry Strategic Plan (UFSP). The first event will be an open house on the UFSP on Saturday, March 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Upslope Brewing Co., 1898 S. Flatiron Ct. (off Central Ave.) in Boulder. This will be a great opportunity to meet staff and volunteers working on this effort and learn more about what you can do. There will also be a tree give-away at McGuckin Hardware on Sat., April 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In the short term, we’re likely to see more sky and sun and less leaves and trees than we’ve been used to. But if we all work together to treat more healthy ash trees, plant more new, diverse tree species and provide excellent care for our existing trees (on both public and private property), we can restore Boulder’s urban canopy to it’s pre-EAB beauty, coverage and benefit. It may take a while. Most legacies do. For more information visit: BoulderForestry.org

Get Outside & Play!

Boulder Parks are healthy places for you to enjoy!

E

ach spring, you will see dandelions in your parks. This is a sign that we have eliminated the use of synthetic chemicals that are typically sprayed to control weeds in order to create healthy places to play. Just remember, when you see a dandelion, it means the grass is healthy and safe for you and your family. It also means that we have to focus on restoring soil and turf processes, not just chemical products, to make grass healthy and strong. This may take time, but our community is worth it.
