Study Abroad Programs and Off-Campus Opportunities

2014-2015

Who are we?

During the 2007-08 academic year, the study abroad office and the summer study abroad office were brought under the umbrella of the newly named Global Education Center (GEC). The GEC is the office on campus that directs and facilitates the semester study abroad programs (including NWC’s Oman and Romania semesters) and the summer study abroad programs, led by Northwestern faculty. The Center advises and assists students and faculty who seek opportunities for growth and reflection that integrate faith, learning and living in the context of cultural diversity and a global community.

The GEC sends students on semester and summer study abroad programs in countries like Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Romania, Czech Republic, France, Russia, Turkey, Japan, China, Mexico, Ecuador, Israel, India, Belize, Oman, Costa Rica, and many others.

Study Abroad gives students the opportunity to gain educational experience in another country where they earn credits towards their NWC degree. Study Abroad can include internships, a service learning or language learning component or some other kind of volunteer opportunities as part of the program.

What is study abroad

Study abroad is a one-of-a-kind experience, hand-tailored to college students who are ready to have their world challenged and willing to embrace change and exploration. Study abroad is a serious undertaking that opens a new door to knowledge and skills and to a whole new way of life and career opportunities.

The Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn once said: “Own what you can always carry with you; know languages, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag.” Solzhenitsyn’s words are, of course, to be taken figuratively, for they speak of the wealth knowledge one gains while travelling, studying, or living abroad.

Why study abroad

Studying abroad allows you to experience another culture, learn a new language, expand your horizon, and gain an appreciation of the diversity of the human experience. Furthermore, it helps you discover something new about yourself, about who you are and what your role is in this world. Last but not least, adding an international perspective to your studies enhances your resume and makes you more competitive in a globally expanding world and economy. If you want to fill up your memory bag (to paraphrase Solzhenitsyn), learn more about the world and yourself, and become better prepared for jobs and graduate schools, the Global Education Center can help you arrange a semester-long experience or something shorter like a four-week summer course.

I think that part of cultural transition encompasses finding what culture s have in common. In this common ground we can find a bridge to step over, a familiar introduction that leads us to find new things, become bolde r, and make discover ies. This picture is a simplistic depictio n of that idea: tea is a fa miliar thing in many cultures, but even th ough tea remains simple in and of itself , it is a branching out and a new ex perience in another culture. So metimes the normality in life helps us be brave enough to face new things. June 2007, Russia Chantelle Steggerd a ’10

As a NWC student you can study abroad after your first two semesters of college work with a minimum GPA of 2.0 for summer and semester abroad. Your participation in study abroad really depends on how ready you are, emotionally and financially, to embark on such a personal and academic journey. In addition, you need to have a relatively good idea about how you want the credits earned to apply (major, minor, general education cross-cultural requirement, elective, etc.). Our Global Education Staff is available to assist in making sure you have the best possible arrangement for meeting all requirements and academic needs.

Who can study abroad

Our short-term summer study abroad programs are unique programs designed and led by one or two faculty members, focused on a specific subject, and vary in length between three and four weeks. The programs usually take place right after graduation in May (but not always) so that students still have time to work or do internships during the summer. The programs are an alternative for semester abroad or a springboard for semester abroad in either the Fall or Spring terms of each academic year.

How to get involved with study abroad

Remember! You can participate in more than one program, e.g. a summer study abroad course and a semester abroad. Start planning early as this will help you design your academic schedule better, clarify questions about your financial needs, and make the most of all college opportunities and options.

This is at the Viata camp, which means life, and Andrew and Solita, a student from Calvin college who is from Canada, are working with Romanians Alex and Rozvan on the low mohawk event for the ropes course. There are different cultures, languages, and personalities present, but they unite as they come together to work as a team and accomplish the goal of getting across the rope. This event and other events at the rope course brought the Romanians, Americans, and Canadians together as they all found a way to contribute and have fun no matter what culture they're from..

In all cases, even for those participants who have or are applying for loans, all program fees must be paid in full prior to departure. Therefore, if a participant’s loan money is not available by the payment deadline, an alternative method of payment must be made. Participants who have not paid in full will not be allowed to participate but will remain responsible for all expenses incurred on their behalf. Semester Study Abroad (NWC Romania and Oman): A non-refundable $250 deposit is due upon acceptance into the program and is applied toward the program fee. You will receive email notification from the Study Abroad Office about specific billing and payments due dates. Affiliated and Partner Programs: Upon acceptance into a program, students will receive official notification from the appropriate study abroad office about billing and payment due dates and other requirements.
