WELCOME S

Y OU !

The 2016 Borrego Springs Village Guide is your introduction to the amazing Borrego Springs community. Surrounded by the magnificence of the Anza Borrego Desert, our village of a few thousand residents welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and we do it in style! Our Village Guide is designed to introduce you to: Where to Stay, What to Do, Where To Eat, and Where To Shop, all critical components of your Borrego Springs adventure. You will also be introduced to the businesses, services and organizations that, together, create the quality of life we have come to expect and are proud to share. We encourage you to patronize the businesses and organizations who participate in this Guide and to Shop Borrego First™.

Supervisor Bill Horn Welcomes You To Borrego! On behalf of the County of San Diego, welcome to Borrego Springs. I am honored to represent the people of Borrego Springs as their Supervisor for North County’s Fifth District.

Supervisor Bill Horn San Diego County

Borrego Springs is a thriving community of business people, educators, health specialists, and retirees who understand how to treat people and meet their every need. Over the years I have been pleased to be able to award financial grants to the Borrego Springs Library, the Anza-Borrego Foundation and the Christmas Celebration at, where else, Christmas Circle Park! We look forward to our continued relationship with Borrego Springs and encourage you to use this Guide as a way to get to know what it is that makes this community so special! •1•

John Richen, the Art and Artisans of Borrego Springs This year’s Borrego Springs Village Guide is focused on Borrego’s Art and Artisans and our cover is the work of sculptor John Richen, one of Borrego’s finest. Richen has been sculpting professionally since graduating from Oregon State University in 1970 where he studied architecture. John and three of his cousins decided as teenagers that they would all become architects and start a firm together. But, on his way to that dream, John discovered his passion for sculpting. At the recommendation of a fellow artist, John and his wife Ellie visited Borrego Springs in 1996. “It was everything I wanted,” John said. “…quiet, peaceful, year round working conditions and a physical environment that is continuously inspiring.” So, John packed himself, five of his eight children, and two dogs into a seventeen foot trailer and made

his way from Oregon to Borrego. John, his kids and his dogs lived in that trailer for six months while John rebuilt the house that would become the family’s new home on Verbena. After completing the construction of their home, John turned his attention to creating his new studio and, upon its completion, moved his entire Oregon crew to Borrego. Richen is an “artist’s artist.” With sculptures in private and public collections both domestically and internationally, represented by Marchetti Fine Arts, the Marshall Gallery of Fine Art, and A Gallery Fine Art, Richen is at work in his studio every day creating commissioned pieces and pieces for show. Richen is a master fabricator. While his work has incorporated granite, fused glass, water and lighting, John’s passion is metal. He loves bronze…loves its surface, it malleability, its depth. He also loves stainless steel and aluminum. “The strength of metal is what allows it to be free,” John says as he describes the filigree on the wings of one of the Angels in a series by the same name. “Each metal has its own characteristics, its own capabilities. My work is about motion, light and spirit and I select my material based upon what each piece is intended to achieve.” Our cover, “Levi Man,” is a whimsical depiction of a cowboy in his jeans. It is a bronze piece standing 100” high and was created in 1998. Photo: Cowboy Agave, by Ellen Fitzpatrick

Summer has come to an end and there is a palpable excitement in the air as the Anza-Borrego Desert temperatures begin to slip below the 100°F level. As our town prepares for the new high season, we kick-off with what will most assuredly be the grandest Borrego Days celebration ever… our 50th! Why do we celebrate? Because Borrego Springs is truly a special place in this world…a place worth celebrating. As La Casa del Zorro Resort and Spa reopened, we “discovered” our decades-old motto and it reminds us all of why we celebrate Borrego. Our motto is “Magical, Experiential and Tranquil”. The “Magical” is represented by the stars that blanket our night skies. “Sic Itur ad Astra” – “The Way to the Stars,” might be the roadmap to Borrego! The “Experiential” are the amazing stories of how our current community came to be here. A guest of La Casa called home, informed the recipient of that call to “sell the house; we’re staying.” They purchased a home that very day. The “Tranquil” is just that. Perhaps after a vigorous hike in the Anza-Borrego Desert, a bicycling adventure to Christmas Circle, a round of golf or night-lit tennis, Borrego Springs is the ultimate “veg-out destination.” Read your favorite book or magazine, sit poolside with your favorite beverage. Re-energize or find yourself. Do nothing! Art is the soul of our village, and this year we are celebrating our Borrego Springs Art Community. There are too many fabulous artists that gathered their inspiration from the beauty and wonder that is Borrego Springs to mention, but we celebrate John Richen, Cheryl Criss, Carol Lindermuler, Barbara Matson, Breta Matson, Marshal South, Liesel Paris and Armand Valle, as well as a couple of the local nonprofit champions of the performing arts, the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center and Community Concert Association, and the very gateway to Borrego Springs, the Borrego Art Institute. Borrego has much to celebrate: a rich, historical past, a strong and energetic present, and a future filled with awe and promise. As we enter the 51st year of our Borrego Days Celebrations, might we invite you to come back again, and again? Sincerely, Patrick Sampson President, Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Bureau •7•

WHAT

TO

DO

Being a village without a single stop light might lead some to believe there is little to do in Borrego Springs. That would be a mistake! Borrego Springs offers an astounding variety of experiences. Exploring the vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (which surrounds our little hamlet) on foot, by caravan, on horseback or by air is a great place to start. Of course, there is any number of other outdoor recreations to indulge in like golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, biking, off-roading, riding and gliding. With a thriving arts and culture community, sight-seeing tours, unique shopping experiences, and delicious restaurants, cafes, cantinas, bars and grills, you’re sure to find a host of things to entertain and inspire. But perhaps the best part of a Borrego Springs vacation is having the option to do nothing at all! With an environment rich in visual wonder, the opportunity for as much solitude as you wish and desert nights that are the definition of “darkness,” Borrego Springs is an excellent destination for some quality “down time!” • 18 •

The first California desert region selected to be set aside as a scientific and recreational resource for future generations, the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is distinguished by scientific features and recreational opportunities not found in other deserts. These include a rare 9-million-year chain of fossils, an ancient stage where the Earth plays out its continuing birthing and death of oceans and mountains, and a front row seat to the clash of continental tectonic forces as they reconfigure California’s coast. There is also unrivaled beauty of the desert’s extraordinary geologic diversity, 600 miles of trails, scenic vistas, and 550 species of native inhabitants. Far more unique, the Park has a heart. Borrego Springs is the geographic heart of the Park. Some call it the donut hole because this 47 square mile village is 100% surrounded and protected by the 1,000 square mile Park. Grand Central for exploring and enjoying California’s largest State Park, Borrego Springs is ringed by the Park’s majestic desert mountain ranges and is a favorite retreat, refuge, outdoor playground, and source of exploration and novel adventures--all inspired by nature. Visitors seeking soulful solitude, something new, or the comradeship of a group hike, photography or jeep tour, bike rentals, or birding, find Borrego’s friendly businesses and non-profits ready to share the desert they love – day and night. Locals will educate you about the spectacular features, alert you to seasonal sensations, and sign you up for recreational experiences and wilderness programs. They will also feed you, outfit you, map you, tour you, and gift you with new friends. Overnight accommodations range from primitive campsites to land yacht RV resorts to picturesque BnBs to luxurious full service resorts. Championship golf courses, secluded and welcoming country clubs, pristine tennis courts, tranquil spas and the true dining experience are all to be found here. Whatever the bucket list – science, health, nature, play or relaxing, the action in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park is generated by the Earth. The place to get hooked up is Borrego Springs – where the heart of the park lives, and nature resorts.

The Sculptures nodf the Ricardo Brecednaisa Avery Vision of Den THE SIGHT IS STARTLING.

GA-

Something prehistoric. Something mythical. Something other-worldly. Here, in the middle of our desert, is a magical menagerie of freestanding sculptures that will astound you. The gifts of visionary town benefactor Dennis Avery and the craft of sculptor Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures began arriving in April, 2008, taking up residence on Avery’s private parcel of land known as Galleta Meadows Estate and easily visible from Borrego Springs Road, north and south.

LLETA MEADOWS

Numbering in the dozens, Breceda’s metal creatures appear almost natural in the desert landscape. Camels, sloths, llamas, wild horses, sabretooth tigers, mammoths, giant birds, wild pigs, sheep, tortoises and, yes, dragons, seem to coexist in spite of time and rivalries. Breceda’s c re a t i o n s a l s o include sculptural representations of homo sapiens, including Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza who is said to have trekked through this desert on his way to San Francisco. Galleta Meadows is truly a unique and wonderful “find” in our desert community---a must-see for every visitor and resident, alike.

The

summertime Milky Way shines brightly over Southern California and nowhere is it more beautifully visible than in the Anza-Borrego Desert. Borrego Springs has been declared a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark Sky Association. The IDA defines a Dark Sky Community as “a town, city, municipality, or other legally organized community that has shown exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky through the implementation and enforcement of quality lighting codes, dark sky education, and citizen support of dark skies.”

Receiving the designation of Dark Sky Community is both prestigious and difficult to come by, having taken the Borrego Springs Dark Sky Coalition more than two years to accomplish and placing Borrego Springs as one of only three communities in the world that have qualified for this distinction. As a Dark Sky Community, Borrego Springs offers the rare opportunity to see a myriad of stars no longer visible in most cities. Whether you are a professional astronomer, an amateur astronomer, or just someone who wants to look up and see the rest of the universe, the night skies of Borrego Springs will amaze and delight you!

Photo compliments of Dennis Mammana © 2015. All Rights Reserved. This photo features the Milky Way with the silhouettes of two of Ricardo Breceda’s sculptures in the foreground. During the 13 second exposure, a bright meteor shot across the sky and added even more drama to the scene. www.dennismammana.com • 34 •

In spring, Borrego is famous for becoming a riot of wildflowers. When winter gives us enough rain and the temperatures are just right, Borrego’s desert landscape becomes absolutely vibrant. From the red haze of the blooming ocotillo bushes, to the gold-dripping pala verde trees, our valley flats are transformed into acres of fragrant, living color. Our village also comes alive with cameras, canvases, sketch pads, water colors, oils, acrylics, paint brushes and pastels as our resident and visiting artists rush to capture the beauty of sunrise on the blossoms, the depth of color enhanced by the midday’s sun, and to stalk every blosson and ray of sunlight, chasing the night blooming exotics and rare cactus that debut after sunset. It is all too glorious!
