xcellence in coaching and a winning tradition are terms that have become syn onymous with Edinboro University cross country and track and field coach Doug Watts. Since his arrival at Edinboro in 1969, the Running Scots have experienced nothing but success, producing numerous AllAmericans and team championships, as well as four individual cross country champions and five individual track first place finishers. Watts' coaching credentials speak for themselves, including 37 consecutive undefeat ed cross country seasons and a string of over 130 straight dual meet victories. Watts' squads have also produced a total of six national cham pionships, including backtobacktoback NCAA Division II titles from 1986 through 1988 and backtoback NAIA titles in 1975 and 1976. His teams can also boast six Division II runnerup trophies, plus finishes of third (twice), fourth (three times), fifth, sixth (twice), seventh (three times), eighth (three times) and ninth. In total, the men's squads have 17 top ten finishes at the national meet in the last 26 years. His women's program, though yet to crown a national champion, has also estab lished itself as one of the premier programs in the NCAA East Region and on the national stage. That includes nine PSAC championships in the last ten years and three East Regional titles in the last five years. Four years ago the Fighting Scot women’s harriers placed second at Nationals. As a result, an "uncountable" amount of conference, district, and regional "Coach of the Year" awards are scattered throughout his office. He was inducted into the Edinboro Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2009 was inducted into the Northwest Pennsylvania Sports Hall of

Fame. Last December Watts was presented the Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award, presented by the USTFCCCA. Finally, Watts was selected for induction into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame, and will be inducted this December. In 2007 he was recognized as the PSAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The National Coach of the Year five times, Watts has published numerous distancerun ning articles for national publications. Twice an Olympic coach nominee, Watts annually con ducts a summer preseason endurance training camp, the Edinboro Distance Village, for young men and women. In addition, 16 of his Edinboro athletes have been U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers. Most recently, Watts has ventured into the administrative portion of his sport, as the past President of the NCAA Division II Track and Field Coaches Association and former Vice President of the USTCA National Coaches Association. In addition, he was the head of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Hall of Fame Committee and presently is on the Board of Directors for the USTFCCCA (U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association). A 1964 graduate of the University of Akron with a degree in Health and Physical Education, Watts began his coaching career at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He intro duced a running program at Walsh Jesuit that yielded a twoyear record of 190 and a district championship. Watts and his wife Margaret reside in Edinboro and have two adult children, Wendy and Christopher.

Head Coach Edinboro cross country and track & field coach Doug Watts has received plenty of recog nition during his 42 years as the head coach of the Fighting Scots. Here are some of the recent instances. Below left, Watts received the Jimmy Carnes Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented last December at the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Convention in December 2009. Named in honor of Jimmy Carnes, the

recognition of his over 40 years of service to Edinboro. In his honor, the University named the cross country course the Doug Watts Cross Country Course. Finally, the photo at the bottom right shows Watts receiving his Pa. Hall of Fame plaque from thenarea President Bill Flaherty. That occurred in the summer of 2009.

Association’s first Executive Director, who for a lifetime has served the sports of Track & Field and Cross Country. It is presented by the USTFCCCA to individuals who go beyond the call of duty in their service to the Association and to the advancement of the sports of Track & Field and Cross Country. Julie Nemergut Yurcich 3rd Year Edinboro ‘07 Former Edinboro All American Julie Nemergut Yurcich returned to her alma mater when she was hired as the assistant coach to mentor Doug Watts. Nemergut con cluded a brilliant running career in the spring of 2006. She capped her career by being recognized as Edinboro’s Nancy Acker Award winner, presented to the top senior female athlete. In cross country, Nemergut enjoyed a dis tinguished career, earning AllPSAC accolades three times and AllEast Region recognition four times. She won the PSAC individual cham pionship in 2004 and 2005, and was also the East Regional champion in 2004. She finished third in the 2005 regional. Nemergut was named the 2004 PSAC Runner of the Year and East Region Athlete of the Year after winning the PSAC and East Region titles, and went on to earn AllAmerican in 2004 in cross country with a 10th place fin ish. Edinboro finished second at the 2004 National Championships, the highest finish in school history. She capped her senior year with her sec ond AllAmerican performance in track & field, thanks to a seventh place finish in the 10,000 meter run (37:23.05). She also reached the finals in the 5,000 meter run, but was unable to complete the difficult double, placing 11th in the finals. Nemergut earned AllPSAC honors in track in 2006 thanks to a first place finish in the 5,000 meter run at the PSAC Championships. She had earlier finished ninth in the 10,000 meter run at the Penn Relays. Nemergut previously earned AllAmerican honors in track in 2004 with an eighth place fin ish in the 10,000 meters. She was a national qualifier in 2005, but missed almost all of the

outdoor track season in 2005 due to injury. A native of Youngstown, OH, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Special Education/Elementary Education in 2007, fin ishing with a 3.91 GPA. She was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Nemergut also earned ESPN The Magazine Cross Country/Track & Field College Division Academic AllAmerican honors twice. She was a third team selection in 2005, then a first team choice a year later. Nemergut resides in Edinboro. She is mar ried to Mike Yurcich, who is the offensive coor dinator for the Edinboro football team. She is pursuing work on a master’s degree in Social Work Clinical Mental Health from The Ohio State University.

2010 Men’s Preview “How many times have I said this over

my long career?,” related longtime Edinboro cross country head coach Doug Watts. Entering his 42nd year of directing the cross country program, Watts again stressed, “ “You win BIG races by running well ‘up front’. “My 2010 team has plenty of team depth, but what we must have are a couple All Americans if we are to reach the National Top Eight,” stressed Watts. A year ago Edinboro picked up a second place finish at the PSAC Championships, then a week later placed second at the Atlantic Regional to earn a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the 31st straight year. That is the longest streak in Division II. 2009 Atlantic Regional Runner of the Year Ben Hahn is a solid bet to earn his second All American honor. A bothersome knee aside, Hahn has the talent and the drive to race up front in any meet on the schedule. “This is my last season,” says Hahn, “and I want to go out as a winner in the Boro cross country tradition of quality runners.”

Hahn placed 17th at Nationals as a sopho more to earn AllAmerican honors, but fell to 66th last year. It was believed that the other senior who would be considered in Hahn’s level was Barry McLaughlin. However, the onetime AllPSAC and AllRegion performer decided not to com pete this year. Two sophomores figure prominently into the Fighting Scots hopes for a quality finish at Nationals. Scott Anderson ran very well in his first season as did Dustin Thomas. If they show improvement from 2009, the team will definite ly be a title contender. Anderson was an AllPSAC and AllAtlantic Region performer with finishes of 13th and 11th, respectively. Thomas picked up AllPSAC hon ors after finishing 14th. Juniors Jake Krolick and Garth Watson have shown excellent fitness over the summer and should impact the Boro’s scoring squad. Mixing in with the aforementioned veter ans, any number of a relatively large Edinboro roster could supplement. Redshirt freshmen Dylan Stevens and Jordan Roose have real potential to knock off a starting spot. Sophomores Bryan Baumgartner and Sean Naderer are seen by Watts as threats to any of the top five veterans. Hardworking sophomore Bart Eckel and redshirt freshmen Owen Venesky and Michael Thielman will also be contenders. Newcomers to the team include track PIAA state champions Alex Beardsley (3200) and Evan Miller (800). Beardsley certainly has running in his genes, as his father Greg is one of four Edinboro runners to win a national champi onship. He did so in 1982. In addition, Edinboro picked up two All Ohio cross country runners, Tim McConnell from Hudson(Oh.) High School and Matt Link of Avon Lake (Oh.) High School, plus Bryan Deibel, a top finisher at the New York state championships while running for Albion High School. “That’s a lot of guys vying for starting posi tions,” declared Watts. “Past experience tells me good teams are made from good intrasquad competition – and we’re going to have lots of that.”

2010 Women’s Preview Following an uncharacteristic down year

in 2009, Edinboro’s women’s cross country team may contend for trophies at the season ending Championships. The 2009 finish wasn’t totally unexpected to longtime head coach Doug Watts, who knew he had young and building squad enter ing the year. A series of injuries didn’t help. Edinboro ended up finishing eighth at the PSAC Championships and eighth at the Atlantic Regional. That meant no trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the sec ond straight year. Unfulfilled in her twoyear quest to achieve AllAmerican status, senior Tina Yi returns uninjured and fit to pursue that failed goal. “Certainly Tina has run well enough throughout her career to be recognized as All American level,” surmised Watts. “But in this sport, one must capitalize on the one opportu nity there is to earn the trip to Nationals, and to this date, she has not had a good race at those sites.” A year ago Yi placed seventh at the Atlantic Regional in a season that saw a very strong field of women’s runners. “It is very important for me to be included as an AllAmerican runner,” stated Yi. “For my team, my school and my coach.” In addition to earning AllRegion honors for the second straight year, Yi’s fifth place fin ish at the PSAC’s made her a twotime AllPSAC competitor. Junior Danielle Cerroni had a sparkling sophomore year, earning AllPSAC (eighth) and AllAtlantic Region (13th) honors. 2010 will find her again at the front of the field in champi onship competitions. Hilary Weismiller, fresh off a summer internship in Baltimore, is talented enough to score well for Edinboro by November, although the belief is the internship likely impacted her summer training. Junior Hannah Kucewicz and sophomore Cheryl Svetz could help. In reality though, Watts believes that the hopes for a quality season rests on newcomers. A definite match for the Edinboro cross country training model, AllOhio cross country and track performer Monica Ciarniello of Lowellville(Oh.) High School should bloom. New York’s Elizabeth Budzinski of Depew High School has

excellent middistance speed, but may need a year of mileage adjustment in order to reach her potential. The same may be said for Pennsylvania 200 and 400meter AllPIAA per former Allison Gibbens. Brittany Kaltenbaugh, a transfer from Westminster College, will definitely rank among the top runners on the squad. Kaltenbaugh was the top runner for the Titans as a freshman and earned AllPresidents’ Athletic Conference honors. A couple of other athletes could help should they experience the freshman to sopho more year improvement – Lauren Scarupa and Alex Brasington. “With only two teams qualifying for Nationals out of a tough regional, the odds are not with us to make it – still we could be in the hunt for the No. 2 spot if all things go well in September and October,” related Watts.

National Champions Dave Antognoli -- 1971 National Champion David Antognoli was head coach Doug Watts' first recruit back in 1969. Antognoli is, according to Watts, the reason Edinboro became creditable on the nation al level, and helped lay the foundation for the success ful program that exists today. The recruiting classes of 197273 followed in the footsteps of Antognoli and led to Edinboro's six national team titles. Antognoli won a multitude of individual titles, including three national titles, and many AllAmerican certificates in cross country and track. He was award ed the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior ath lete in 1973 after winning the cross country champi onship in 1971, the NAIA 10,000 meters title in 1972, and the USTFF national championship in the six mile event. He also was the top collegiate finisher in the 1972 Olympic Trials.

Greg Beardsley -- 1982 National Champion In 1982, in a brutal combination of calfdeep snow, 20degree temperatures, and a chilling wind, the crowd at the finish line of the 1982 NCAA Division II champi onships in St. Cloud, Minnesota was barely able to make out the faint outline of Greg Beardsley, who crossed the finish line in a record 60.9 seconds before the rest of the field to win the national championship. Beardsley recalls his experiences as “great, but very cold!” Beardsley won the Sox Harrison Award as the top male senior athlete in April 1983 and was multiple U.S. Olympic Trials scorer.

National Champions Martin Lyons -- 1991 National Champion Martin Lyons was attracted to Edinboro due to the strength and reputation of the Running Scots program. The Melbourne, Australia native had no trouble adapt ing to his move across the globe, winning the 1991 NCAA Division II individual cross country title as a freshman. Though he came to the United States with little cross country experience, coach Doug Watts expected All American honors from the Aussie on the merit of his track credentials. Lyons would go on to claim cross country AllAmerican honors in each of his four seasons at Edinboro. Only two other runners have accom plished this feat since. An eighttime AllAmerican in cross country and track, Lyons was the NCAA East Regional recordholder in cross country, and also hold the school record in the marathon with a time of 2:21:35, set back in 1995.

Yi Min Wu -- 1998 National Champion Yi Min Wu became Edinboro’s fourth national cham pion after he won the 1998 national meet by a 10second margin with a time of 31:06.60. Wu did not lose a race throughout his freshman season. A sixtime AllAmerican in cross country and track, Wu was recognized as both the PSAC and NCAA East Regional ‘Runner of the Year’ in 1998 an ‘99. He was the 1999 national track and field runnerup in the 10,000 meters in addition to winning the PSAC 10,000 meter championship. Wu earned his second AllAmerican cer tificate in track by also placing sixth in the 5,000 meter run as a freshman. Wu is one of three runners to earn AllAmerican honors four times in cross country. Finally, Wu was named the PSAC Rookie of the Year in track and field as a freshman.

dinboro University is the region’s largest and most comprehensive institution of higher edu cation. Under the leadership of President Jeremy D. Brown, who assumed the helm on July 1, 2007, Edinboro adopted the motto, “Great Things Happen Here!” Yet the words represent much more than a tagline or catchy phrase. They reflect upon a changing and growing University that strives for excellence regionally, nationally and globally. Founded more than 150 years ago by the descendants of Scottish immigrants, Edinboro’s beau tiful 585acre campus is now home to more than 8,700 students enrolled in over 100 undergraduate and grad uate programs of study. University to enhance the Edinboro experience for stu dents through projects such as the new suitestyle student hous ing complex known as The Highlands at Edinboro University. The $5 million Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Arena opened in late 2009, meaning athletic teams can hold full practice sessions during inclement weather inside the region’s largest freestanding, airsupported facility. The new $5 million Human Services Building will be ready for classes in January 2011 and the $23 million expansion and renovation of the Cooper Hall science building is underway. In addition to the fiveacre Mallory Lake and ample pastoral and wooded areas, there are more than 40 other buildings on the spacious Edinboro campus, including residence halls with private or shared rooms, coed housing, honors housing and livinglearning floors for academic and special inter est student groups. Van Houten Dining Hall offers a variety of student meal plans, and Skipjack’s fast food emporium is perfect for an energybooster at any time. Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies and Research, with it’s technologybased computer assisted distance learning, now offers the region’s fastest growing academic programs. Edinboro University in Erie – The Porreco Center, is a beautiful 27acre campus that includes classrooms, computer laboratory and a unique facili ty for hosting small conferences, business meetings and special events. Edinboro University in Meadville is located in the city’s historic Bessemer Building. All Edinboro University facilities are connected by free EMTA bus service.
