Borealis feirer 20 år med eksperimentell musikk i Bergen i 2023, og benytter sjansen til å spørre om festivalformatet fortsatt er relevant med sin evne til å samle og engasjere mennesker? Eller er det på tide at ideen om festivalen som konsept må endres? Hva kan en festival være og hvilke utfordringer vil den møte med tanke på estetikk, politikk og bærekraft i fremtiden? Fra Storbritannia kommer BBC-journalist og forfatter Kate Molleson for å lede samtalen. På scenen samler hun kunstnerisk leder for Borealis, Peter Meanwell, sammen med flere andre festivalledere fra eksperimentelle musikkfestivaler i Europa. Thomas Schäfer er direktør for Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) og kunstnerisk leder for Darmstadt Summer Course, en av Europas mest prestisjetunge og ledende organisasjoner innen klassisk samtidsmusikk. Mariam Rezaei er en prisvinnende komponist og utøver, og kunstnerisk leder for TUSK Festival med base i Newcastle og Gateshead, og står i bresjen for det eksperimentelle musikkfeltet i Storbritannia. Beril Sarıaltun er musiker, lyddesigner og produsent bosatt i Istanbul i Tyrkia, der hun leder organisasjonen Beats by Girlz, og organiserer festivaler som ofte står i opposisjon til styresmaktenes politikk. As Borealis celebrates its 20th anniversary we ask whether festivals still hold any power through the act of gathering and intense engagement, or whether it’s time for the idea of festival to change? What can a festival be and what challenges will it face in terms of aesthetics, politics and sustainability? Leading the conversation will be BBC Radio 3 journalist and author Kate Molleson, and joining Borealis artistic director Peter Meanwell on stage will be festival directors from across the worlds of contemporary and experimental music. Thomas Schäfer, Director of the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) and Artistic Director of the Darmstadt Summer Course, is in charge of one of Europe most prestigious contemporary classical music festivals. Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award winning composer and performer and is Artistic Director of TUSK Festival, based in Newcastle and Gateshead in the UK it’s at the forefront of experimental music organising. Beril Sarıaltun is a musician, sound designer & producer based in Istanbul, Turkey, where she leads the organisation Beats By Girlz Turkey, organising festivals often in opposition to prevailing political conditions. Together they share their ideas and visions, and discuss whether the festival format has a future, and if so what it might look like.
