Truly unique - a fully upgraded farmhouse When Derek and Susan Brant bought Stichill Mains Farmhouse in 2006 the property had lain empty for many years – but there was enough there for the couple to imagine how it could look. There was also a large barn on the site, which they could see also offered enormous potential. Fast forward six years and the three bedroomed farmhouse is now a beautiful three bedroomed family home that combines all the character and original features of a traditional property, but with the benefit of modern fixtures, fittings and services. As for the four bedroomed barn – now an established five-star holiday let with bookings throughout 2013 - who would ever believe this stunning two-storey conversion had ever been a muddy old cow shed? “We did the house first and then applied for planning permission to convert the barn,” explains Susan. “The farmhouse is very deceptive in that it looks small from the outside but is, in fact, very spacious inside.” What is particularly striking is that the interior is modern but with high ceilings, wood paneled doors and windows, attractive fireplaces and open fires – features that give it a traditional feel. “The reclaimed stone fireplace in the living room was so heavy we had to reinforce the floor,” Susan adds.
Apart from the living room the layout also has a dining room, large dining kitchen, three bedrooms (one en suite) and family bathroom. But in this house the devil is in the detail. The dining kitchen is fitted with cream Shaker-style units with wood-effect block -style worktops and tiled splashbacks, while appliances include a stainless steel gas hob, built-in over/grill and overhead extractor – there’s also space for a slot-in dishwasher and fridge/freezer, free-standing fridge/freezer and dining furniture. Off the kitchen is a useful boot room with access to the garden and driveway beyond.
