DIRECTOR:

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

SARAH ELLISON LEWIS, CREATIVE DIRECTOR Welcome to our world. I am from Texas. It forms all of my parts. From my obsession with nature, my innate connection with grandiose accessories, to virtue, and celebrating life. Art for me resides in places where there’s room to breathe, room to think, room to rest. Calm, and kindness. People happy to be alive, who don’t struggle much with who they are. BOOTLEG is the name of a tiny Texas town, from the Texas Handbook Online:

BOOTLEG, TEXAS. There are two stories about the origin of its name. One associates the name with Moonshine Sheep Camp, where a moonshine still was once located; the campground was for cowboys and others traveling from La Plata to Endee, New Mexico. Another story has it that the community was named for a “ bootleg school”–a small school building that was moved to various locations by agents selling land for the Capitol Syndicate so that prospective customers would believe there was a school near the land they were buying. During the

1930s Bootleg Corner experienced a boom of sorts after Louis Woodford converted the abandoned “ bootleg school” building into a general store, which became a trading center for the western part of the county. I am a fashion stylist and have lived and worked in and out of New York City for ten long years. My work rarely feeds my soul. So, BOOTLEG was born out of an adoration of the connections I have with people, regarding the choices they make for their feet. I also found that no matter what

was happening with my budget, shoes are always a good buy. For all the reasons you know and imagine, this is why BOOTLEG NEWSPRINT was created – to celebrate our connections through one simple thing – shoes. We hope to bring you: 1. Beautiful photography, with a journalistic, editorial element. We hope you connect strongly with our images. 2. Features on feet and the people involved with feet. We are quite sick of glossy commercial coverage of must-have product. We think beauty is at every price point, in every community, in every age, culture and closet. 3. Inspiration to connect with those around you. Encouragement to purchase something out of your comfort zone, as a celebration of life. A dialogue you may not have otherwise had. Designed and produced between New York City and Austin, Texas, and printed in Birmingham, Alabama. We are working on our website, www.bootlegnewsprint.com. Until then, you can request a copy of this paper at sarah@bootlegnewsprint. com, or just drop me a line. Sarah Ellison Lewis Founder / Creative Director BOOTLEG Newsprint

SULLIVAN Maura Sullivan, fine art photographer

What drives me to take pictures is my need to tell a story. I look for subjects who share a timeless beauty. I try and capture either the moment before something is about to happen, or directly afterward. I like the idea of mystery...walking through a dream that seems sort of familiar but you can’t quite place. I usually prefer to go blindly into a space with my subject and let the story unravel spontaneously. I am

very inspired by film and fiction, and often borrow the persona of certain characters to set the mood for my subjects. I am also very inspired by wardrobe and locations. I believe my most successful images create a sense of doubt as the whether the scene is true or false, modern or antique.

“Some of my favorite shoes I bought in college at vintage and Sal-Val stores in upstate New York, mostly old-lady shoes with the labels all worn off, tons of fine lines, amazing details and lots of great scuffs.”

LOPANO Sean Lopano design director

It’s not often a graphics designer has their own Leica with a macro lens, or a boot collection. But that’s why we love Sean, in addition to his completely unrelenting fight for his vision, and amazing glasses. There’s nothing more fantastic than meeting in the middle, and everyone being the better for it. Thanks to Sean, we all grow. With a focus on design from the University of Texas, and countless accolades and awards at not-even 30, he’s evermore inspiring.

Also bounding between both coasts (Texas and New York) as needed, he cut his teeth at proper overheadbin usage and the proper boots to quickly pass through security. On Sundays, you can find him sunning, bathing or both.

“I love designing Bootleg, because I am able to work on the combination of my three favorite things: boots/ footwear, graphic design and photography (amazing photography). Pitting 1940’s German and French

“It was fun to play on this shoot.” Sarah: “What do you do on Sundays?” Chadwick: “I like to go fishing, Sunday is my day to fish.” Sarah: “What if your favorite shoe? Chadwick: “My right Red Wing boot my dog Gracie modified the top of the tongue by chewing it off.” www.chadwicktyler.com

pg. 28 “What I loved about working with Sarah was it was more about making art and finding the story, instead of working in a box. The poetic choices of shoes and wardrobe seamlessly fused with the vintage layers of the old mansion-romantic feel of the space. Burned sweaters and yes, old-lady shoes, waltzed comfortably between the rooms occasionally interrupted by a pair of sexy leather hot-pants, bed-head and no make-up...for the perfect cinematic film noir twist.” www.maurasullivan.com

ALL typefaces against one another always makes me smile.” “I have 31 pairs of boots in my collection, ranging from vintage English oxblood ranger boots, to Gucci equestrian, and many pairs of handmade Wesco engineering and logger boots. It’s been an obsession my entire life.” www.lopano.com

“PARIS LOW DOWN”

I am starting a shoe store called Bootleg Austin, so I have been hitting trade shows for a while now. Paris of course is so alive. I photographed the way that I see things - from clusters of feet to clever piles of everyday objects. The beauty of life is simply authentic. Every moment is as valuable as the most memorable moments. I see life in slow motion sometimes. I am overwhelmed at the beauty of movement, seeing life and how folks express themselves, starting with the shoe. Sometimes it’s relevant, sometimes it’s not. What’s most relevant is, we all have to wear shoes. For me they are the counterpoint to the earth. I never see someone without seeing their feet. But I don’t miss what’s going on around me. I couldn’t miss it if I tried. It’s enough for me.

MAURA SULLIVAN:

I met Maura through a commercial styling job. She was the calm, professional voice the crew of forty heard. She asked to shoot my portrait. Which was an honor. Turns out she’s one of my favorite living fine art photographers. So, she was kind enough to become one of our visionaries. We shot Charlie and Elise at the archive of creative genius/interior designer/owner Eleanor Ambos’ breathtaking Metropolitan Building in Long Island City. It was brutally cold, which became its own character, as the girls bent and begged for warmth. Eleanor is a longtime supporter of the arts, and creator of timeless magical spaces...which she has dreamed up to share and inspire a few creative souls. We heart her.
