Editor’s Note. On many occasions, artists have prophesied the path of their career, the course of their life and many other things surrounding them including life and death. A very specific one is Jean Michel Basquiat, the artist that we have chosen for the cover of the second edition of our magazine. From the kid living in a cardboard box on the streets of New York at 17, to a superstar millionaire artist at 21, to his tragic death at the age of 28 to a legend that inspires millions of artists, Jean Michel Basquiat has captured the imagination of the world. The purpose of this publication is to see how contemporary artists present themselves and their works to the viewers and to connect them with a wider audience.

Gallery’s Note. The path for creating this publication was very exciting, and we had a really great time working with so many talented artists. Artist from all around the world are participating in this exciting publication, and their works and biographies are truly amazing and inspiring. Kindly note that most of the works are for sale. An interdisciplinary artist merging painting, sculpture and architecture studies through the breaking down of boundaries of what is considered a work of art. This is expressed in an intuitive creative process through the use of discarded mundane objects and salvaged materials, being guided by what nature can reveal when one knows how to seek. A vital recurring theme in his works is a deep-rooted quest for identity, having dual nationality between Mexico and the US and experiencing both cultures existentially. Inherent with a native instinct to push the limits and finding a sense of freedom, his artworks embody that of a neoshaman wandering through the simulacra of buildings, paved ground, lush forests and serpentine bayous in the paradoxical landscapes of the metropolis. Throughout his travels and experiences he also illustrates a reference to ancestral wisdom through Mexica folklore, thus revealing our lost connection to nature.

Sofiia Olena Kalmykova

Sofiia was born in Simferopol, Ukraine on February 18, 1997. She has been interested in art since childhood. In 2013 she witnessed the process of occupation of Crimea by Russian troops. As a result, in the fall of 2014 Sofia and her family were forced to leave their home in the Crimea and move to Lviv, the west of Ukraine, where she started to study design. During her studies she took a deep dive into the world of art. In 2019 Sofia had her first personal exhibition at the Lviv Palace of Arts. With her fellow young artists she organized several modern art performances which made an impact on the cultural life of Lviv. In 2020 she graduated from Ukrainian Academy of Printing (fine arts). Now Sofia lives in Leipzig, Germany, where she keeps on looking for new experiences, improves her technique and looks for new opportunities.

My name is Catherine Fleming, I am a 25 year old self taught artist from Galway on the west coast of Ireland. My artistic practice involves exploring the idea of pure physical expression, how the body alone can portray emotion and the individuals self image. I tend to exclude or distort the face in my paintings as I believe facial expressions can be more easily fabricated than the rest of the body. I believe that all humans, with practice, can master the ability to control what their facial expressions tell the outside world yet the body language is less easily manipulated. I am currently working on my art in my studio, overlooking Galway Bay.

Ranjit Singh Sagoo from Sutton Coldfield, England, is a self-taught artist. Working as a Doctor in the NHS, he balances his medical career with pursuing his passion for art. The amalgamation of the experiences of his life as a doctor and artist, Ranjit’s art is an exploration of human nature in a natural, visceral form. Fascinated by human nature through his daily experiences and interactions with his patients, Ranjit expresses these emotions through his art. Ranjit challenges his art has to speak the emotions and feelings it portrays. He draws the connection between human behaviour and emotion and that seen throughout the animal world to the effect that his art is perfect blend of these. He challenges himself to bring to life these fascinating animals in realistic, detailed pastel drawings so that the viewer can connect not only visually but emotionally experience a very human emotion in its natural, animalistic form.

Laura Notari is a professional abstract artist. She was born and raised in Argentina and actually, she is living in The Netherlands. She studied Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, and during her entire life, she studied with several renowned painters and plastic artists. Corsi was born on December 1981 in Carrara, a city of art in Tuscany. From an early age he was passionate about painting, also thanks to the time spent in his father’s artistic shop, he won regional and national competitions. He began his journey by making copies of original art works, mainly classical figurative, then approached realist painting by pursuing the raw beauty of Frida Khalo. Franco’s first contemporary abstract experiments concern in the genre of great masters such as Kandinsky, Mondrian, Pollock, Richter and Burri, before he developed in his personal “Eccentric Visions”. He exhibits his artworks around important studios and galleries in Italy, winner of the “Michelangelo 2021” International Prize. His two years in London were hugely enriched by his exposure to many different artistic and cultural experiences. This, plus his many encounters with artists from many disciplines, provided a fertile environment for the next stage in his artistic development.

Vlada Antipenko is an artist and student of the Kyiv National Food University, majoring in bioengineering and biotechnology. Live in Ukraine, Kyiv. Took a course at the Pinchuk Art Center for youth who want to practice contemporary art. An active volunteer of creative Kyiv associations, such as the House of Culture Kurenivka (Konstantinovskaya 73), KosmosTabir (Kirillovskaya 47B), and “Fitotron” (art pavilion in the Botanical Garden Grishka). The works were created by thinking about the latest world events. A year and a half ago, the world was swept by a wave of false information about viruses, diseases, vaccines, and drugs. How little mankind knows about the microcosm and less does the average inhabitant know about molecules, antibiotics, and the simplest processes inside it. The works are created to draw people’s attention and interest to the microcosm, the processes of which are extremely small, but incredibly important for survival.

Born in Fort Wayne Indiana, Katrina Gorman showed a great interest in art at an early age. As her artistic abilitiesin drawing and book writing grew in school, she then learned she had a new passion by learning how to sew at 9 years old. However, instead of pursing art as a career, she went to college and earned a degree in Early Childhood Education. Then later moved to the insurance industry. In 2009, the love of drawing and sewing merged into a new exciting expression for her, called Textile Design Art. Soon after her new discovery, she had her first fine art gallery showing at Art Link Gallery in Fort Wayne later moved to San Antonio TX where she continues to pursue her passion today. Some featured exhibitions and juried art events Katrina has shown her work include: Solo Exhibition featured at The Carver, San Antonio TX 2015, King William Fair 2016, HGTV show called, “That’s Clever” 2008, and international exhibition in Chite Spain 2017.

Serena Rossi

Serena Rossi was born in Milan in 1972, where she lives and works. In 1999 she graduated in pharmacy. She trained in visual arts with various courses including engraving at the Pomodoro Foundation in Milan. In 2013 Serena worked on the Site Specific project alongside Silvia Petronici in Bologna. In 2014 she completed the Manual for Artists workshop created by Ivan Quaroni at Circoloquadro in Milan. In 2016 she then completed the Mono-type course with Leo Ragno at the Foundation Federica Galli in Milan and illustration with Javier Pabala at the Duina art space, Lonato, Italy. Since 2002 she has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Some of her works are part of the collection located in the open-air museum of Camo and in Gravina di Puglia. From 2012 she received several awards for her poems and published in several anthologies.

Kim Chase I am a self-taught artist who recently started painting again after a long absence from art. I work predominantly in acrylics, but have dabbled in water colours and pencils in the past. I love the effect of light on my subjects and the colours that dance with it, whether it be dark or light. I love working with details and connecting with nature. To me, nature is my biggest inspiration no matter what medium I chose to paint in. I believe we are all connected to nature in a parallel way; behaviors, movement, attitudes, and visually. My connection to the canvas is always nature, whether it be a portrait, landscape, animal or abstract. I try to put that into my work each time and draw the viewer in to feel the same.

Valeria was born in 1991 in a closed Siberian town where nuclear waste is still stored. Lifeless desert polygons, where there is not a single tree, created the dull look of her hometown. She decided to become an artist when she was 13 years old, graduated from art school and college. She studied landscape architecture at the university. Love for plants is reflected in her artworks. Valeria believes that deepening the connection between our deeply rooted nature and the real world, makes people careful with nature. The land is for plants, not for nuclear burial grounds. Valeria runs the art studio - greenhouse, where she teaches painting and grows over 50 types of plants.

During my study at the technical university, I have mastered graphic design software. In the beginning, it was a new hobby, but literally in half a year, staying a student, I began to earn by graphic designing in advertising agencies. In several years I began to participate in competitions on the websites for designers. After a while, I completely became to work as a freelancer. Now I work for more than 18 years as a graphic designer with organizations worldwide. At the same time, I didn’t stop saving up ideas for painting. And at the moment I am ready to share my paintings oil on canvas with the public and I try to make our world more beautiful.

Currently in Amsterdam, her passion lies in exploring her imagination and the broader world. While self- taught, Jana’s work is influenced by an appreciation of surrealism, dadaism and expressionism. Growing up as one of 11 children and finding friendship with people of different nationalities, interests, characters, Jana has always been fascinated by other’s feelings, perceptions and thoughts. Thus, she prefers to leave her art untitled so that people can find part of themselves in the expression, rather than being guided on an impersonal journey.

CAPELA, was born in Lisbon in April 1973. With a higher education in Advertising and Marketing, he completed just two years of his professional career in this field, because an invitation made him embrace a career in television where he worked with some of the biggest names in television in Portugal. Author of two books, CAPELA started painting in 2012. He was a pupil of the Portuguese painter Gabriel Garcia. CAPELA defines his Art as visceral and chaotic. No defined lines. He can also be included in Jean Dubuffet definition of Art Brut. It was with surprise that he received an invitation in 2015, for his first individual exhibition. He no longer dedicated himself to exhibitions until he felt that his work would have quality to be exhibited. This is the moment!

Lucia Salzgeber was born in 1988 in Nancy in the East of France. She understands deeply, thanks to her paternal grandmother who survived the camps, that human beings can transcend themselves. At a very young age, she lived through intimate and collective experiences in which she tried to catch a glimpse of the furious, wounded, ambiguous and primal intensity of herself and the other. She sketches and fills dozens of notebooks that still follow her. Salzgeber fragments her life by long moments of creation in an intense solitude which give birth to installations mixing body, pictorial and performative languages. In 2017, Salzgeber moved into a 7,000 square meter former granite factory, a building she named Relief, a sensitive balance between relief and oscillations. The studio, hung in a pit like a moored boat, is held by its bleached walls. Within it, the artist digs white with black. She releases the black and delivers the white. She writes a temporality in the timeless.

Ariel Chavarro Avila In 1970 I was born in the Central Andes Mountains in Colombia. My love for nature, colour, texture and art began as a little child. I am an environmental contemporary minimalist artist working in the medium of painting particularly with Oil and Watercolour. Emily Brooks Millar Emily Brooks Millar is a visual artist based in Glasgow, who works predominately in illustration. She is currently a member of the GoMA Youth board, playing an active role in organising and leading workshops and events for young people in Scotland. Her work always holds a sense of humour and a pulpy style. She is also in collaboration with the Salt Space Cooperative: a collective of like minded artists who form work and public spaces. Her most recent exhibitions of ‘Nuns on the Run’ and ‘Window Shopping’ have garnered high media attention and conversation. Her up and coming children’s horror comic book is soon to be published.

My name is Rae and I’m a Painter based in York, studying my MFA at Leeds Arts University (202022). As my hero Matisse has been quoted “What I am after above all, is expression” I use oil paint, mixed media and the iPad to create works that show expression through my use of colour and line. I am influenced by Art History, from the old masters through to the early 20th Century modern art movements. My work reveals my experiences, mood and instinct, I often don’t understand my paintings until I come back to them later. This work was part of a series called ‘Queen of the Living Room’, made during the first months of 2021. Little did I know, a month later my partner would leave me. When I look at this work now, I feel like the artist in me knew what would be coming.

Sonaz Izadi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles California. After receiving a BFA from The Theatre School’s conservatory program at DePaul University she began pursuing her passion for the visual arts. She refers to her works as “Energy Paintings.” It is her belief that there is a distinct chemical shift between people upon their first meeting. Sonaz has spent many years painting strangers in parks, coffee shops, and bars. This allowed for meaningful conversation among people and ultimately yielded a new way of expressing the energy of a moment people seldom talk about—the first encounter. Today Sonaz predominantly puts paint to paper to exhibit her own energetic response to specific moments in time. Many of her works have been created during a time of social and economic unrest in today’s world. She hopes her art welcomes a better understanding of one’s own vitality in any given moment.

Shereen Tabet is a Scottish Lebanese abstract expressionist artist based in Clapton. Mostly self-taught, her work is inspired by Colour Field and Action Painters. Her practice explores an obsession with colour, light and texture through mixed media painting. Acrylic, oil, pencils and pastels are applied using brushes and adapted household tools. Her work incorporates subtle use of pattern, juxtaposed with fragments of bold mark making and sometimes inclusion of ‘hidden’ figures, inviting the viewer to look closer. With recurring themes of family, femininity and relationships, Shereen has an interest in how our memory interprets the past and shapes the future. Her work captures a sense of vague fleeting memories, feelings frozen in time, interspersed with moments of clarity, sometimes joyful recollections of past experiences, people and places, other times tinged with melancholy.

Andrew Samuel Harrison Andrew Samuel Harrison is a self-taught artist living and working in Richmond, VA. Building upon single-line drawing, his current collage work emerges from a process of cutting, gluing and ripping figures painted on paper. A willingness to run with spontaneous ideas combines with these iterations to create suggestive abstract forms set on framed backgrounds and named with a playful love of language.

Jared Orlin After more than 15 years working in ceramics, South African-born Jared Orlin shifted his love for bright, bold colours and the beautiful symmetry of repeating imagery to a new medium: digitallyenhanced pop art and abstract photography prints. In doing so, he founded iHeart Pop Art and its mission of adding colour to even the dullest of walls. Inspired by Andy Warhol and MC Escher, Jared, who now lives in the UK, loves presenting the ‘normal’ in surprising and unexpected ways. Through playful repetitions and colour enhancements, he puts new spins on everyday images, imbuing them with unusual and sometimes surprising perspectives.

Born in the Bronx in 1992 and raised out in Brooklyn for the remainder of his youth, the artist has always had a creative soul that was full of expression. Messiah was the only child until having a sister at 16 which is when he came out to his family with his gay sexual identity. His life wasn’t picture perfect, but it was filled with tough love and passion. These unique qualities his family gave him is what made him into the creator he is today. Messiah enjoys many other creative outlets besides oil painting, he has talents in creative writing, poetry and acting. When he is not creating art, or writing heart felt poetry he is often digging into spirituality and nature. Messiah is a emerging artist, and this is just the beginning of the world getting to know who this creator is. He believes we create the beauty we want the world to perceive us as, and Messiah just began to bloom and shall continue to flourish in his garden he is building.

Kevin Devonport

Kevin Devonport is an emerging artist currently based at Assembly House Studios in Leeds. It could be said that he has had somewhat an unorthodox entry into the Art World as he learnt to paint whilst serving a prison sentence for drug offences. Art has offered Kevin a new lease of life by allowing him to reinvent himself and turn away from his criminal past. In the short time since becoming an Artist Kevin has covered significant ground with his career. He won a Bronze Award for the painting category in the national Koestler Awards, a semi-finalist in the King House 2020 exhibition and currently at that stage in the Artist Lounge ‘In the Wild’ exhibition. Alongside having a celebrity client he has now also been featured in a number of publications. Despite not having any artistic qualifications he does hold a First Class Honours BSc in Sociology that does have an influence on a number of his works. Alongside his usual practice he has donated a number of paintings to charities.

I’m the one who sees... Celia, French, visual artist, complementary therapist, wine lover, modern witch, sarcastic, dark chocolate addict, tree hugger, dreamer, unpredictable... No particular order! Born and raised in the South of France, I moved 20 times in the last 25 years and lived on 4 different continents, always in need of change and adventure. I’m a “life” painter who works from intuition and emotion. Spontaneous expression that is nonlinear and nonlogical instead of an intellectual exercise for technical perfection. An organic expression of the complexity and beauty of my life experience. My mediums are acrylic and pastel, my favorite tools are my fingers and knives. Juliet Martin Juliet Martin has a BA in Visual Arts from Brown University and a MFA in Computer Art from the School of Visual Art. Born in Portugal, Clara is currently based in Berlin, where she has been living for the past 11 years. With a PhD in human biology, Clara has worked as a cancer researcher all her life. Despite being an art lover for as long as she can remember, it was not until the beginning of 2021 that she decided to create her own art. In the middle of a global pandemic and going through a period of maternity leave, Clara felt an immense need to cope with all the outside stress and anxiety and find a place of her own. Her art became her quest for inner balance. Clara’s work is an attempt to express her subjective concept of beauty – it takes inspiration from long periods of self-reflection, but also from the most ordinary and mundane little things. It is about giving context and meaning to all the forgotten details.

Inspired by pioneering colour masters like Claude Monet, as well as contemporary artists such as Scott Naismithand Julia Badow, Aysha Mendes is a colourful and passionate mixed-media artist based out of Oshawa, Canada. As a South Asian British-born Canadian, with parents from east Africa, and having lived in eight cities, she comes from a colourful background too. As a result, she loves connecting with diverse people. Known for her use of stunning colour, Aysha combines fluorescents with pastels to create vibrant abstracted landscapes and florals that feel uplifting and energetic, yet surreal and serene. Though always a creative, Aysha has only recently delved into painting despite no formal arts education. Her work features mainly acrylics on canvas or paper but she loves to play with new materials such as inks, spray paint, watercolors, markers, pastels and even the collage of physical objects.

At kindergarden my sister and I were hair stylists, my parents were in shock when they saw our mohawk-like haircuts. 1st grade thinking I was a mad scientist as my friends and I made “cheese” by leaving old milk in lockers. In second grade I started my very own company Pencils Incorporated with my close friends. Every night a new classmates pencil would be first stripped of its paint with scissors and then dipped in whatever fun smalling soap we could find; to us, these sticky slimy pencils were the next great feat of engineering. Later I was a scientist as the fourth-grade lesson on ants led me to ask for ant farms for Christmas and ask to visit my Grandmothers house so I could observe the ants that for some unknown reason she kept trying to kill. I am still that same little kid holding a pair of skissors after coming back from the hiar sylist or an apiring pencil engineer. I learn new things from the world around me.

Riddhi Sarker My name is Riddhi Sarker. I’m a 17-year-old artist from Hyderabad, India. I am a very loud, curious, and bored person, if I’m being completely honest, especially now during the pandemic. This is one of the reasons why I love to experiment with medium and style in my artwork. It allows me to break any monotonous routines that I end up creating for myself, and find inspiration in the world around me. My name is Julija Usoniene and I’m a seascape and landscape artist based in Germany. After graduating a university with a bachelor’s degree in History and Theory of Arts in Lithuania, I have moved to Germany. My passion to paint started in childhood and was a part of my life ever since. After 5 years in Germany I have moved to a Spanish island – Fuerteventura. This peaceful and beautiful island in the Atlantic Ocean helped me to discover myself in a new ways, I understood, what I was missing and searching all the time – feeling of self fulfillment through creation. Living on the island I started selling my paintings in artist’s markets and fairs. The thing that inspires my art the most is the ocean. I have always felt a strong attraction to be close to the water and especially the sea. After spending one year in Fuerteventura, I have moved back to Germany where I am currently living and working.

Born in Tehran in 1994, Parham Ghalamdar moved to the UK in 2015. His background as a graffiti artist, and his experiences of authoritarianism in Iran, have undoubtedly impacted his thinking and practice. Resistance to oppressive ideology is especially evident in the nature of the drawings, in their medium, stylistic quality and undeniable audacity. But across a wider practice, Ghalamdar draws on other influences too, including Western and Middle Eastern Art History, Soviet Realism, animation and traditional Persian miniatures. Ghalamdar’s paintings depict sagacious worlds, unique and profound, threaded together in community. Motifs, objects and scenarios appear and reappear, introduced and examined. They echo the frames of a storyboard, but this story is fractured, futile and dysfunctional – a story undone, an anti-narrative.

I am an artist and illustrator, I work with different techniques, now my favorite direction in creativity is digital illustration. The key theme of my work is the combination of nature and art. Nature, its diversity, sensuality and beauty - that’s where I get the energy to be creative. Symbolism and polysemy, the uniqueness of each form and the ability to express the nature of my soul - this is what I give through creativity and what I receive in return. I was born in Moldova, aged 7 I moved to the grey northern port city of St. Petersburg - these two highly contrasting locations have informed mine aesthetic which deals strongly with dualities. Formally trained as a book illustrator at the St Petersburg State Academy of Art I have based myself in Tbilisi, Georgia where I have been working constantly on developing my unique style. My studies of botanical features and landscapes are indicative of my sensitive use of colour as a means to communicate the hues of light found at southern latitudes.

I go into each session with a general color scheme and nothing else. I paint with complete freedom. As a communicator, master in aesthetics and a multidisciplinary artist, I explore senses and thoughts around the aesthetics of darkness, the layers and landscapes of the body , the vulnerability of the memory and the fragmented identity of humans. After a process of reflections and research, I create visual or written metaphorical narratives based on a person´s biography, memory or identity. This narratives flourish in photography, installations , video art and poetry. I have created two major projects named “A body´s discourse” and “Bodies in the Dark”. “A body´s discourse” is a series of pictures that express the agony of existence. “Bodies in the dark” is an installation conformed by pictures, a video art and poetry which lead to reflections around women´s bodies as a geographic and expressive space affected by memories and darkness that produces insecurity, fear, eroticism, loneliness and / or creativity.

With only 48 hours to create a costume to wear for a fundraising event, I used this gorgeous spray-painted canvas dropcloth that I designed along with my friend Martin Cerventaz. Cutting, molding, pleating and sewing this beast of a beauty with my industrial sewing machine, I constructed this magical three-piece ballgown and masquerade mask. Down to the wire, full of drive and excitement I pulled “The Belle of the Ball” off and it fit like a glove! Passion, drive and a powerful need to create and be free while doing it, motivates Cheryl to keep experimenting and pushing boundaries in her 3D fiber art, mixed media and 2D art. Nature speaks volumes to her and Jean- Michel Basquiat inspires Cheryl to always stay true to her wild self and go for it! Art is an emotional expression and a fluid journey to be explored.
