In celebration of Bodum’s 80 years anniversary in 2024, Bodum has made a special collection to honor its many years of pure and simple design.
'Are you sure, That we are awake? It seems to me That yet we sleep, we dream.' Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is a funny play about the misguided ways of love and plays on everything that can happen when we dream. Dare to dream is this year's well-chosen theme at 3daysofdesign. In a time when the world is at war and uncertainty is spreading, we must give ourselves time to find the courage to dream of a better world. Good design can help change the world and we must think new at the same time as we must protect and preserve the planet we live on.
This 3daysofdesign festival is the 11th edition and it has grown to be a leading design event in the world. This is undoubtedly due to not only skilled planners but also to the fact that everyone involved has really wanted to help utilise the resources that are and can be found in existing square metres around Copenhagen. It's the biggest 3daysofdesign ever ... Copenhagen is approaching midsummer, and the night is short and the day long. Let yourself be inspired by the more than 400 design brands who open their doors and invite you in. In one of Denmark's most famous plays, the 1722 comedy 'Jeppe on the Hill; Or, The Transformed Peasant' by Ludvig Holberg, the farmer Jeppe wakes up in the baron's bed and says: 'Am I dreaming, or am I awake?' Designers, Shakespeare, Holberg and other good people: Let's dare to dream.
At the hubs you can meet people of the festival that will guide you. The two hubs are at: Hotel 25hours at Vor Frue Kirke and Reffen Hub at Refshaleøen.

Signe Byrdal Terenziani dreams of
A design that ... is meaningful. A world that ... collectively works towards peace on earth.
A life that ... fosters equal opportunities, without social segregation, without poverty, hunger, homelessness and war.
A 3daysofdesign week that ... will continue to turn dreams into reality.

'THAT'S WHEN IT STRUCK ME: WE NEED
This year's theme for 3daysofdesign is the prompt 'Dare to Dream'. We asked the festival's Managing Director, Signe Byrdal Terenziani, what dreams mean to her.
Text Malou Wedel Bruun Photo PRThis year's theme is 'Dare to Dream'. Why "dare"? Have we all become so realistic that we have forgotten how to dream?
– To me "DARE" resonates with pushing boundaries, and when adding the optimistic word "DREAM", it becomes a gentle reminder for us all to use dreams as a catalyst for positive change. I don't think we have forgotten to dream. We just need to be reminded. To give ourselves space and time to dream. Because dreams can be a powerful driving force, especially for designers, their contribution to society and to the world at large.
What difference does a dream make?
– Dreams are the gateway to our innermost thoughts. A springboard for the imagination, free from limitations rooted in practicalities. It's within this dreamscape that unconventional ideas and solutions are born.
Do you consider yourself a dreamer?
– Yes, definitely – I guess I'm a dreamer by nature. I dream all the time. It's as if there was an ongoing dreamscape running through my mind –which sometimes can be a bit hard to follow – even for myself ... (smiles) My dreams mostly revolve around how we can use design to make a better world for people and our planet. It could be dreams about using new, environment-friendly materials or creating spaces which would foster communities and inclusive environments. I dream of spaces where we can use design to address social challenges, like loneliness and stress. Just imagine simple things like restaurants with long tables, where you don't feel lonely if you're dining by yourself. I see so many settings where we could do so much more when it comes to taking care of each other and the beautiful world we live in.
When was the last time that you dreamed out loud?
– This morning, actually. I woke up feeling a bit under pressure. I love the dynamics of my work and the feeling of getting things done. But when I looked at my calendar, I could see a very busy day ahead with lots of meetings and deadlines. I'm a dreamer, who likes to dream with my eyes
open. I started dreaming of lying in a hammock on some deserted island, listening to the sound of the ocean waves, surrounded by the scent of flowers and herbs. I knew that I wouldn't be able to physically move to an island today, but I could still nourish part of my dream. So I put on a swim suit and had a quick dip in the Copenhagen harbour in front of my house. Swimming was part of my dream – even though the water was at least 15 degrees colder than what I envisioned. Still, it was absolutely lovely. And instead of driving my car to work and getting stuck in traffic, I decided to go by bike to enjoy the city and the scenery all along the waterfront.
– That's when it struck me: We need to create spaces at our festival that allow us to stop for a moment, close our eyes and dream. We can't just talk about "DARE TO DREAM". We need to walk the talk and show that we are serious about it. In order to dream, you need spaces conducive to dreaming, where you can pause and unplug from phone calls, emails and so forth. You need a nice chair, a hammock or a dreamy sofa. The scent of spearmint or lavender. Soothing music. Spaces where you can close your eyes, open your senses … and dream. When I arrived at the office, I immediately started drawing spaces that could work as dreamscapes in-between the exhibitions during our festival. Where our guests, exhibitors, the press and my team could have immersive sensory moments to dream. I'm working on creating those types of settings as we speak.
Who inspires you to dream?
– Artists, musicians, my children, my loved ones, nature. One person who comes to mind is David Bowie. He once said: 'Go a little bit out of your depth. When you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting.' It reminds me that it's o.k. to feel a bit shaky when stepping out of your comfort zones. Without a dream, design would be purely functional; only serve a purpose. Nothing more, nothing less. But when a design is driven by a dream, it becomes more meaningful. So stay curious and keep on dreaming.

Each district has been given a specific colour, so that you quickly can get an overview of what happens where.
Previously an industrial port full of warehouses, Nordhavn has been transformed into a focal point of creativity with its own stop at the metro. Keep your eyes open for the unmistakable landmarks, the iconic Silos.
A few metres from the harbour, you will find 3daysofdesign focal point Pakhus 11, a newly renovated warehouse. Continue along Amerikakaj with its scenic harbour views, and you'll find more exhibitions.
Housed in a beautiful Rococo building, the museum showcases a vast collection of decorative art, crafts and industrial designs. Located on Bredgade, that is expected to come alive during 3daysofdesign.
With galleries and classic furniture design shops populating the historic buildings nearby the breathtakingly beautiful church with its stunning brass dome, this district will be bustling with dozens of exhibitions.
Inside the ornate iron gate, you'll discover exquisite halls used for hosting extravagant gatherings. During 3daysofdesign, we'll celebrate our own cultural event in the mansion and at other elegant venues nearby.
Kongens Nytorv (The King's New Square) is a majestic square with a distinct sense of grandeur, situated next to Strøget, Nyhavn, the Royal Danish Ballet and Bredgade, and easily accessible via the metro.
A little green oasis nestled between the striking silhouette of Den Sorte Diamant (The Black Diamond) library and the regal presence of Christiansborg Palace, it's the perfect place to relax and recharge.
For over 300 years, Holmen served as the grounds for the naval base of the Royal Danish Navy. Now, with a new axis of urban design, it features art schools, galleries, dockside bars and restaurants.
From the Reffen street food market to Michelin-star restaurants, Refshaleøen is an inclusive community with an entrepreneurial spirit. Lounge by the waterfront, before heading back to the bustling city centre.
Vor Frue Kirke (Church of Our Lady), a magnificent cathedral steeped in history and architectural splendour, is the centre of the district that also includes the city's Latin Quarter and Copenhagen University.
Once the industrial zone of Carlsberg, the district has been revitalised into a mix of modern architecture with elements that retain the brewery's cultural heritage and charm, such as the four life-size granite elephants.

Text Emily Nathan Photo PRWhat's your dream?
– To be able to make a sincere contribution through our work in design and architecture, offering people positive emotions in everyday life.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– We are both architects, specialising in furniture and products. Stine wanted to become a cabinet maker, Enrico an architect. In designing furniture, you might say that we have met our dream halfway. It was our maniacal passion for details and materials that led us to design numerous products in our career; these pieces are not for us, they are for the people who will choose, receive or inherit them. We hope that every single line, every thought and all the care that we have put into every detail is an appreciated act that will give people an appreciation of both functionality and beauty.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– We sincerely think that kindness is needed in this moment, more than ever. Each individual can express it in his own way; we express it through design but each of us, with his art, manages to enrich each other. As designers, we have an act of responsibility for the product we create and the surrounding environment it contributes to. We definitely don't need poor quality products, things that are made approximately
and only to be consumed and disposed of. Instead, we create products with high quality, both in terms of material and personal values. This will make the product long lasting, distinguished by its ability to adapt to time and use. We believe that every product should be able to create a personal relationship with its user, hopefully for a very long time that spans generations.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to Dream'.
– We are sincerely trying continuously to challenge ourselves, challening our own work and design language. We continually reflect on our two cultures and diversities. Personally, we have always looked to history with respect. We feel deep respect for the Scandinavian masters of the past and believe that their work consisted of a unique quality of craftsmanship and materials, combined with highly functional and honest design. We also admire the Italian masters for their intellectual approach to design. We used to say that we draw on the classic Danish furniture and craft tradition, as well as the classic Italian conceptual approach. Therefore, both in work and daily life, we are constantly confronted with contrasts, and contrasts are often the centre of our inspiration. Achieving a perfect balance without stopping dreaming is a challenge we confront every day in our work.

Linie Design’s exhibition for this year’s 3daysofdesign, combines the creative possibilities offered by traditional rug craftmanship with a dream-like underwater world. Designer Urd Moll Gundermann’s intricately hand-drawn deep-sea dwellers are imaginatively transformed into a compelling woven narrative. Using a myriad of structures, colours and forms to express subtle tonal interplays and tactile contrasts, the vibrant organic shapes and mother-of-pearl nuances are brought to life in the rugs. The complex compositions challenge traditional techniques, pushing the potential of rug artistry to new heights that invite curiosity and immersion, making it a unique woven underwater dreamscape experience not to be missed.

HONEST LIGHT AND OTHER STORIES
Founded on curiosity for the unique, the Danish brand Karakter presents a unique portfolio of furniture, lighting and objects from designers who have already written the history of design, from Bodil Kjær and Achille Castiglioni to Aldo Bakker and Michael Anastassiades. Text May Kjærsgaard Photo PRWhat's your dream?
– As a young designer my influences come from all over the world, both in industrial design and art and the things in between. My dream is that my practice can include both worlds. Not only working with industrial furniture design but being able to keep making experimental designs that perhaps can give new ideas to the other side and vice versa. I dream of becoming a designer who makes products that will contribute with something new and hopefully something better.
– For 3daysofdesign, I dream of creating an exhibition that challenges the visitors' perception of plastic and its properties in crafts and design. I wish to create a space where you experience a collection of domestic furniture crafted with a unique technique that forces us to reconsider what modern craftsmanship is, exploring the aesthetics of plastic, transforming the industrial material into an analogue form of expression.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I want to contribute with something new and hopefully better. I don't want to make just another chair. I want it to be new in a functional or aesthetic way. It can be the whole expression of the chair or it can be a small detail making all the difference. I want to create intuitive design. Not overcomplicating things. People should be able to understand my design, how it's made and how it's put together.
Kasper Kyster wanted to create focus on young experimental design, not yet part of the industry. The platform Ukurant won Exhibition Of the Year during 3daysofdesign 2021. Kyster graduated in 2022.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– I think the world needs more quality and less of the opposite. In all aspects of our society. Not only products. But when it comes to products and design, quality takes time to develop. So: Not thinking of fast solutions for bigger problems but taking time to rethink the standards of our normal means. Let's raise the bar of standards so that quality is the new normal.
Share your thought on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– The first thing that comes to mind is our exhibition platform for young experimental design during 3daysofdesign, Ukurant. It started as a dream in 2020 for my colleagues and me for us to exhibit our bachelor's projects during 3daysofdesign. Signe Byrdal Terenziani (the festival's Managing Director, ed.) quickly responded and gave us a nice location at Frederiksgade 1. But the space was bigger than what we ourselves could fill out, so we wrote a manifest explaining what we wanted Ukurant to be: an exhibition platform and community for young experimental design showcasing the best of what the youth have to offer. Creating a scene for talents making sure they are seen by the industry and a wider audience so that hopefully their dreams come true.
101 Copenhagen is excited to unveil its latest collection, a seamless amalgamation of 70s and 80s design that introduces timeless elegance into modern interiors. This innovative series features high-quality Nubuck leather from Italian tanneries and reimagined chrome finishes, embodying the best of both eras with a contemporary twist. Designers Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl have skillfully blended fresh materials and finishes with the iconic earth tones synonymous with 101 Copenhagen. The collection includes updates to the Toe Chair and Big Foot Stool, now available in luxurious Nubuck leather, offering both comfort and cutting-edge aesthetic appeal. The new lighting fixtures, including the Ghost Chandelier Chrome and Drop Chandelier Globe, are inspired by 80s geometric and minimalist designs. These pieces incorporate chrome’s dynamic and reflective qualities to enhance any space they occupy, providing both functionality and enchanting visual effects. With its meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of materials, the new collection from 101 Copenhagen invites a refined sense of elegance and sophistication into living rooms, lounges, and office spaces alike. This line is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and design excellence, ensuring each piece not only serves as a functional asset but also as a central artistic statement.
101 Copenhagen is a Danish design brand founded in 2017. With a vision to honor exquisite quality and craftsmanship, the collection encompasses furniture, lighting and accessories in a timeless, yet modern design. With a true passion for materials and refined textures, organic shapes and colours, 101 Copenhagen presents the epitome of classics and must-have novelties for Scandinavian and international interior connoisseurs alike. The design of 101 Copenhagen is firmly rooted in the Scandinavian soil and nourished by Japanese minimalist aesthetics. Sharing
an emphasis on quality materials, techniques and traditions, the meeting between the North and the East is notable in the holistic collections of 101 Copenhagen. The design approach is dynamic and characterised by freedom of expression - creating unique and timeless pieces without compromising on playfulness and individualit. An attention to detail and a shared sense of aesthetics is what drives the two main designers of 101 Copenhagen, Tommy Hyldahl and Kristian Sofus Hansen. Merging their backgrounds and experiences from the fashion
industry, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and travels in Japan respectively, a narrative of minimalist, sculptural and conceptual design is evident throughout the collections. Translating and transforming the simplistic inspiration from Japan in a Scandinavian context is all about honouring quality, heritage and materiality while never seizing to compromise on form and function. 101 Copenhagen is a curated selection of tactile, bold objects standing out in a crowd and gathers as a whole.

The medium for artist and designer Nina Nørgaard is glass. Having studied mouth blown and sculpted glass with masters in Paris, Venice and San Francisco, she graduated from Kosta School of Glass in Sweden in 2010. Today, she works with commissioned and personal projects world wide.
Text May Kjærsgaard Photo PRWhat's your dream?
– My dream is to balance work life and being a good mother and wife as an independent artist and business owner. I dream of creating a good and healthy life and staying true to my dreams. We moved away from the city in May last year – to pursue a dream (initially my husband's) of establishing a vineyard in the hills of Odsherred (the North West coast of Zealand). We also built a studio at home where I can work and create pieces, contributing to the vineyard with glassware. It's a big project because there's so much work to be done – but I've learned to appreciate every step of the way. I'm so grateful that I trusted Joachim's dream of leaving the city to build this paradise.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I hope I will still keep inspiring the next generation to learn a craft and to follow their dreams. Remembering that good things take time and patience. Another aspect is to show the world that it's better to buy less but of good quality. I recycle and save everything, giving them new life in other projects – glass is very expensive to produce and the world is lacking in sand, so being aware of the precious material glass is, and making pieces that are beautiful, functional and not copies of all the pieces already made, is really important for me as an artist and a designer.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– Good, honest design; inspiring art; well-made, excellent craft – where you can see and feel the time it takes for a piece to be made and the skills and dedication involved. Too much low-quality work that looks the same as the pieces in the shop next door is being produced every day.
Share your thought on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– I am a dreamer by nature – I dreamed of working with glass since I was 5. I wanted to create glass pieces for restaurant Noma in 2012 (they became my first client). Additionally, in 2017, I had the opportunity to visit L.A. after being invited by a world-famous actress who showed me around and gave me business in the states. Then, I dreamed that glass should be something the younger generation would put on their wish list alongside a bag – today, I have many young customers. Byredo, Ben Gorham, Reform ... I have many stories, and I'm not like everyone else, as my family would say. I believe you should dare to dream big if you want to make a living working with glass. It's hard, expensive and warm. Few people work with glass because of that. But for me, there is so much life, beauty and possibilities that I never get bored. My bonus son once said, 'On your stone, it should say, "everything is possible".' I'm impulsive, I take risks. But I never gamble with money.

THE VARIOUS EMBASSIES are important cultural links between Denmark and their home countries. The French Embassy is located in the Thott Palace; a remarkable 17th century historical building on Kongens Nytorv, that has housed the embassy for more than a century. The Embassy has showcased French designers as part of 3daysofdesign every year since the festival began.
In Copenhagen, embassies are very much a part of the cultural life, buzzing with events all year round that promote their home country's DNA in Denmark. But! Always with a personal invite. During 3daysofdesign, several of them open up their doors, showcasing new design – and their own exquisite decor. Meet them here.
EMBASSY OF ITALY – Why visit the Italian Residence during 3daysofdesign? says Ambassador Stefania Rosini. – I would suggest three main reasons plus one: 1) The location is at the centre of an amazing part of the city, where the history speaks through a special architecture. 2) The designers today are in the first row dealing with an evident need to be aware that beauty must go hand in hand with the respect of the environment. 3) Thanks to the special relation with the Triennale di Milano and the Director of the Museo del Design italiano, Prof. Marco Sammicheli, the Embassy involved one of the most important Italian creative directors, Claudia Pignatale, who has prepared "An Italian Affair" with partners Ethimo, Fenix, Moroso and Secondome. The four brands – two self-producers, one artist and one flower designer – will each be telling a story of Italian craftsmanship and style. 4) Our pleasure to meet friends, who are always welcome at Fredericiagade 2! Fredericiagade 2, 1310 Copenhagen
EMBASSY OF SPAIN – The Spanish Embassy through ICEX, Spanish Trade and Investment, is thrilled to once again be part of 3daysofdesign. This is a unique occasion to witness how the Spanish furniture brands blend their rich artisanal heritage with their innovative designs. We invite you to visit us at the Odd Fellow Palæet and immerse yourself in this space, connect with industry enthusiasts and discover the latest trends that will shape the furniture of tomorrow, the Embassy encourages. Bredgade 28, 1260 Copenhagen
EMBASSY OF FRANCE – This year again, I am delighted to open the doors of the French Embassy as part of 3daysofdesign, and to allow the public to discover this exhibition presenting the best of the new French design scene in the beautiful framework of this historical palace, located in the heart of Copenhagen, says Ambassador Christophe Parisot. The Embassy and Institut français, the French cultural centre in Denmark, will showcase a series of pieces throughout the palace's iconic historical reception rooms by some of France's most promising upcoming designers. This includes pieces by students from some of France's top design schools (école Camondo, école Duperré, école des arts décoratifs ...), as well as French designer Arnaud
Lapierre’s "Rondin", an elegant bench specially commissioned by the French ministry of culture. The exhibition will be completed by a set of remarkable tapestries from the Manufactures d’Aubusson and ceramics from Manufactures de Sèvres. Conceived in partnership with Mobilier National. NB! Registration via Billetto on the embassy's page on 3daysofdesign.dk is mandatory. Kongens Nytorv 4, 1050 Copenhagen
EMBASSY OF ICELAND – The embassy is delighted to open our doors to celebrate Icelandic design and participate in Copenhagen's vibrant 3daysofdesign festival, says Ambassador Árni Þór Sigurðsson. The showcase features two distinct exhibitions, highlighting the fusion of Icelandic and Seattle based design studios in a collaborative project themed "Designing Friendship". This year your are guaranteed not to miss pizzatime, with designers Flétta and Ýrúarí, the winners of the prestigious Icelandic Design Awards 2023. Through their innovative approach, they intertwine design with environmental consciousness, offering a playful and impactful narrative. An electrical felting machine plays the role of a pizza oven while the designers work as pizza makers. Guests will be able to order a pizza from a menu, or by selecting toppings to customise the order to their own taste and bring home a one of a kind wool pizza made from leftovers from the Icelandic wool industry. Strandgade 89, 1401 Copenhagen
EMBASSY OF FINLAND – Unfortunately, we will not be able to make a public event this year, since the embassy is newly renovated. But we have a "by invitation only" event, where we are happy to exhibit two brands that are typical for Finnish interior design. They both represent small and family owned enterprises, producing exclusive and democratic products based on tradition, but immensely evolved. Lepo with 70 years of design history, including the Moderno Collection by Prof. Yrjö Kukkapuro, and 50 year old VM Carpet. Carpets and rugs represent the traditional Finnish way of sustainable living; in the old days, rugs were placed not only on the floors but also on the bed and on the walls – practical and pragmatic energy efficiency during the long and cold winters, says Ambassador Harri Kämäräinen. PREPARE TO SMILE when you enter the world of Absalons Kirke, designed in close collaboration with artist Tal R, known for his exploding colours.
Upcycling is not just for clothes and furniture; with new ways of living and thinking, buildings change function as well. We guide you to some of Copenhagen's finest transformations, from churches to post offices.
Text Emily Nathan Photo PRLike many thriving cities, Copenhagen hovers in a state of endless evolution. Scaffolds pop up from one day to the next; well-traveled commutes are suddenly rerouted by traffic cones as the city pursues an infinite series of transformations.
A cosmopolitan hub's ability to successfully revive, integrate and illuminate its pre-existing spaces, architectures and environments is certainly proof of something – progressive vision and economy, to name two. And Copenhagen ranks up there with the best of them. Perched along its historic streets and hidden inside its picturesque court-yards, obsolete spaces are being revitalised into vibrant new destinations seeking to answer the
ever-shifting needs of a modern metropolis. What's remarkable about these transformations is not just the infusion of new life into neglected areas, but the sustainable ethos of reuse, and the fresh, original vision for what a city can – and should – offer its residents that underpins them.
Here in Denmark's capital, there are a handful of visit-worthy architectural typologies that have yielded the most inspiring transformations from old to new, from past to the present – in ways that assert their readiness to embrace the future, whatever it may bring, as well as each of them being quality buildings reminding that "Gilding fades fast, but pigskin will last," as Hans Christian Andersen wrote in his 1847 fairy tale 'The Old House'.
ABSALONS KIRKE
Once a solemn place of worship, Absalon now serves as a bustling hub of community engagement and cultural exchange, decorated by renowned artist Tal R. Offering everything from dining experiences to table tennis matches and flea markets, Absalon has not only given the building a new lease on life, but reflects a broader shift in societal values towards inclusivity, community engagement and adaptive reuse of space. Go for: the long table dinners and a game of table tennis.
HELLIGÅNDSKIRKEN
Helligåndskirken (the Church of the Holy Ghost) is still an active place of worship – but it has been adapted to the modern world. Located on the vibrant shopping street Strøget, it integrates its spiritual heritage with the city's contemporary life by hosting various community activities, including open markets, antiquarian booksellers and concerts. Go for: the outdoor markets.
KØDBYEN
Literally named "Meat city", this former hub of Copenhagen's butchering industry has evolved into a lively cultural and culinary district while preserving its architectural heritage. Today, the area beautifully merges historical elements with contemporary uses; most of the former meatpacking facilities now accommodate art galleries, trendy dining spots, nightlife venues and innovative workspaces, but a handful of butcheries still operate alongside burgeoning businesses, merging the district's industrious history with a vibrant, creative present. Go for: the croissant at Prolog Coffee.
BRØNNUM
Once a bustling ticket salespoint and meeting point for the city's theatre set, Brønnum now houses a chic cocktail bar, decorated by original wood carvings imported from an antique pharmacy in Spain. The transition of a space like this reflects Copenhagen's ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new, drawing on the charm and gravitas of a space's former life to anchor and ground contemporary possibilities. Go for: the Milk and Honey Highball.
VEGA
Originally known as The People's House and built in 1956, the building was designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984), who is known for several significant works in Copenhagen, including the Radiohuset and the old terminal at Copenhagen Airport. After undergoing a major renovation in 1996, it was transformed into VEGA, now one of the city's most prominent music venues. This transformation retained many of the original architectural features, such as the dark wood paneling, mahogany floors and unique friezes, railings and lamps, which contribute to its status as an architectural gem. Go for: the concerts (vega.dk).
BANEGAARDEN
This former railway station in outer Copenhagen has traded its tracks and timetables for a dynamic new role as a cultural hub. Where travelers once hurried to catch trains, locals and tourists now meander through art exhibitions, craft markets and music events. The original architectural features of Banegaarden have been meticulously preserved and integrated into its new function. The high windows that once streamed daylight onto busy platforms now illuminate creative spaces for workshops and studios, and the waiting rooms, once a place of transient passage, have become gathering spots for classes and other educational activities. Go for: the organic street-food market, where all meals cost 50 dkk. (banegaarden.com/foodstalls).
THE COFFEE STATION, IN HELLERUP STATION
This café is located on site at Hellerup Station, in a space that was originally part of the original station and local post office. Emphasising quality and good taste, The Coffee Station is run by two charming hosts, and most of the baked goods and lunch items are homemade. The interior transformation marries the historical charm of the original train station structure with cozy café culture, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Go for: the owners, who know coffee and can offer alternatives to the trendy, acidic profiles popular in Copenhagen.
VILLA HOTEL
Set across from Copenhagen Central Station in a grand building that once served as the Central Post and Telegraph Head Office, Villa exemplifies a masterful blend of historical preservation and modern luxury. The design maintains the building's Neo-Baroque exterior – original architectural elements like marble columns and timber paneling have been preserved –while the interior has become a bustling contemporary meeting place for guests and locals alike. Visitors can relax in the lobby, take meetings under the stunning, arched glass ceiling or enjoy food and drinks from one of the elevated on-site bistros and cafés. Go for: the pastries at Rug Bakery.
Situated in the historical post office building next to the ENIGMA museum, Brasserie Post has undergone extensive renovations to reinvigorate the space. The transformation was carefully planned to maintain the grandeur and architectural integrity of the original building while infusing it with a contemporary flair suitable for a modern brasserie. Now in operation for almost one year, the venue boasts a menu offering a mix of classic dishes and specialties complemented by an ambitious wine list, as well as welcoming guests for casual snacks in the bar, cozy dinners by the fireplace or social gatherings in the courtyard. Go for: a special dinner.
Marmorkirken (The Marble Church) with its stunning brass dome and intricately-detailed marble columns and walls is an iconic, Neo-Baroque landmark that took nearly 150 years to complete. A few blocks away is Amalienborg Castle – four identical palaces designated to select members of the Danish royal family. The cobblestone streets surrounding the church have undergone significant renovation in recent years, with galleries and classic furniture design shops populating other historic buildings nearby. During 3daysofdesign, the district will be bustling with dozens of exhibitions – not least at FREDERIKSGADE 1, a house full of exhibitors and events next to the Marmorkirken metro.
A really good Copenhagen coffee chain is Original Coffee. If you're in the vicinity of the Marble Church and need a jolt, go there. Bredgade 36, 1260 Copenhagen Take a time out by the water in the small park Amaliehaven next to Amalienborg Castle. Toldbodgade, 1253 Copenhagen Or take a quick stroll over to Kongens Have (the King's Garden) for some hygge in the sun!
RUDY AUDIO TAKES HI-FI SERIOUSLY
Rudy Audio, a collaboration between Københavns Møbelsnedkeri and Søren Rose Studio, is a startup that takes vinyl collectors seriously. Rudy Audio produces its line of hand-crafted speakers, amplifiers and furniture focused on uncompromised audio-visual experience along with a dogma that the wood they use is harvested locally in Denmark. The inside of each speaker is insulated with compressed seaweed, and they even have their own sawmill where they meticulously dry, cut and prepare the wood for each piece. – We love the innovation there's been in the industry when it comes to sound performance, but we raise a big question about why speakers and amplifiers look like they do. We have a very different take on how these objects should feel and look without compromising the sound and experience, says co-founder Kim Dolva. Rudy Audio is also taking a swing at redesigning the black panel flat-screen that has become the centre of attention in our living rooms. – There is nothing better than watching a great movie on a screen, but I also want the ability not to look at a black screen when it's not in use. So we have integrated a projector, speakers, and screen into a beautiful credenza. It's state-of-the-art technology that will blow your mind, says co-founder Søren Rose. stones from Ukraine into glazes for her
– When I look at the world, I'm in awe of all the beauty that exists here. At the same time, so many terrible things happen, there's so much pain. It's tempting to ignore the dreadful or be overwhelmed by powerlessness. But instead, I dream that we all strive to make the world a better place where we are. I've embarked on experimenting with transforming stones from Ukraine into glazes for my ceramic sculptures. In Sydhavn (Copenhagen area, ed.), where I reside with my family, there's a sizable community of Ukrainians. The stones for this project made their way to Denmark through a young Russian woman, whose friend hails from Ukraine, and they assisted me. All three of us dream of the same thing as most others – we dream of peace.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– The dream of alleviating the pain in the world has always been present. Not by offering comfort, as the worst things cannot be comforted away. But by being with people who experience sorrow, loss and pain without trying to move them from point A to point B, but simply being with them in the exact situation they find themselves in. I want to make room for reflection, whether it concerns a ceramic piece or a conversation.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– Starting with what we need less of: Many people have a strong urge to assert their opinions on various matters, often while simultaneously condemning others and their viewpoints. I would like to see less of that. And more? Amazing things can happen when people are present, listening and curious. I believe we should reserve our outrage for matters that truly matter, where significant injustices occur, as they do, for example, in Ukraine.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– I dreamt of being happy for many years. I wasn't. I was unhappy when I worked as a priest in the Church of Denmark – not because of the work, but because of the working environment. After 12 years, I resigned. And since then, with the help of many people, I have built my vision. Making my own art pieces but also taking care of people in a new way – I teach them to create everything from abstract sculptures in gypsum to ceramic cups. I tell them what I learned – that you can build anything if you know how to do just one thing: Ask for help. My work still involves meeting and working with people, no matter what they bring and no matter how they feel. That remains the same.

Once again FRAMING will host a huge number of prominent Danish and international brands, this year in two spectacular exhibit areas: for the fifth time in one of the city’s finest Rococo palazzos, the Odd Fellow Palace, and for the first time in the beautifully restored Harsdorff House on Kongens Nytorv.
FRAMING will host 44 brands in total during 3daysofdesign, and due to the successful expansion, this year will include the two wings of the Odd Fellow Palace as the vibrant centre, as well as the Harsdorff House on Kongens Nytorv. This historic house is just a short walk away from the Odd Fellow Palace, and as it is usually closed to the public, this is a unique chance to experience the beautiful surroundings from within.
The founder and owner of FRAMING, Samira Kudsk, who has been involved in 3daysofdesign since its inception, understands how important a location can be, and she is looking forward to welcoming both old and new exhibitors as well as guests with interest in good design in the spectacular settings.
– I am proud to tell that a large number of brands once again have decided to exhibit at FRAMING, and of course, I am also grateful that so many new brands have chosen our framework for their participation in 3daysofdesign. There is no doubt that 3daysofdesign has become an event you don't want to miss, and an event that companies really invest in, says Samira Kudsk.
International and Danish guests will find fresh ideas in furnishing, objects and projects by young talent and established designers.
From all over the world, design companies will join the exhibition –from Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic, to mention but a few.
Among the new exhibitors at FRAMING are Brokis, who creates a range of very exciting lighting design. Also debuting in the Odd Fellow Palace are Dutch brands Auping, Montis and Moooi Carpets as well as the German brands Classicon and Pulpo.
The Scandinavian countries are strongly represented, including Danish BoConcept and Cane-line. The Finnish brands Secto Design, Nikari and Woodnotes will gather at the corner of Bredgade, just outside the gates of the palace. Swedish brands such as Kasthall, Johanson Design and String Furniture, who mark their 75th anniversary, will all display their novelties.
This year, Danish Njordrum Home and their concept of a sustainable, mobile house can also be found at FRAMING.
Once again, the City Garden will come to life in the courtyard of the palace, and a variety of outdoor brands will showcase their new products for outside settings such as the garden, the terrace or the balcony.

Text Emily Nathan Photo PRWhat's your dream?
– My dream is more dreams. I love to think in all creative directions and act between various disciplines, from product to lighting to interior. Every challenge is the driving force, and it offers endless new perspectives. There is not a specific topic I am looking for, it is more the surprise that compells me.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I would like to send a message and have an impact with my products. My hope is that people stop consuming trendy products and start to cherish well-crafted objects that last. I don't want to simply contribute more products to an already saturated landscape; I want to give people treasures.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– I think we all need to understand that satisfaction is more relevant than always striving for more. Slow and considered is very often more sustainable than fast and thoughtless. Slow food, like slow design, is an attitude we should consider seriously.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to Dream'.
– Dreams set us on the paths to greatest freedom and are the seeds for creativity. Unconditional dreaming is my personal way to grow ideas and visions, without restrictions and requirements. To be unique, you need to feel confident with yourself.

Kongens Nytorv (the King's New Square) is a majestic square with a distinct sense of grandeur, situated in the heart of Copenhagen and easily accessible via the metro. Take a stroll east of the square along the sunny side of Nyhavn (the "sin" side for some, since back in the days, when Nyhavn was frequented by sailors, it was the city’s red-light district). Here, you’ll find the iconic, colourful townhouses with bars and restaurants overlooking the canal. Facing the square is the Royal Danish Theatre's "Old Stage", now home to the Royal Danish Ballet, and just adjacent is Charlottenborg Palace, which houses The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

What's your dream?
– Dreams are always in flux, changing and transforming as time passes. Longings and experience are somehow inseparable. Perhaps the notion of being able – and fortunate enough – to continuously move forward, evolving and discovering what this strange world is about, is our longest-lasting dream.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– We think that our focus on virtues, committing to our principles and sticking by them, defines some sort of navigation. By trying our best, by celebrating skill and curiosity and on the way being conscious of how our choices have impact and consequence – this is our compass. We strive to be always aware, moving and dreaming with a sense of responsibility for our actions.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– We need more focus on the climate, nature and essential human
Space Copenhagen (Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou) deftly balances opposites – classic and modern, sculptural and minimal. Find their new outdoor collection 'Thorvald' at &Tradition.
connections. We need less digital noise, which steals our time, intellect, concentration and attention from the things that really matter.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to Dream'.
– Like everyone else, we are deeply affected by the state of the world – and whether the topic is climate, war or radical political division, we are dealing with a reality that is radically different and much more challenging than when we started our work life. But we all have to keep hope and optimism alive, and we dare to dream that spaces and relevant design can also change our perception of things, especially when it comes to human interaction. As designers, we have a great responsibility in these matters, and we try to design and create spaces where people feel comfortable and embraced. We also create designs with a long life, that feel both timely and timeless, and always engaging. Our mantras throughout our entire work life have been "slow aesthetics" and "poetic modernism", which are statements that we feel are even more essential today than ever.
Multi-talented designer Anne Boysen spans various design categories and materials, now adding silver work for Georg Jensen with the exhibition INTOO, celebrating the brand's 120th anniversary.
What's your dream?
– I dream of simplifying our complex world by creating designs and experiences that make time stand still. Ever since I was a child, I've possessed the ability – or perhaps a gift – to fully immerse myself in the creative process. It's this profound sense of presence and enchantment that I aspire to share with others.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I envision crafting designs that offer people a playful, immersive experience – a pause that allows them to truly connect with themselves. In an era marked by uncertainty, crises and constant change, my dream is to help people remember the importance of finding beauty in the present moment, as well as in their connections with themselves and others.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– The world is in dire need of more pauses, a slower pace and deeper immersion. We live in a society overwhelmed by material indifference,
constantly bombarded with information that demands our attention. We do not have the bandwidth to process all these impressions without sacrificing the capacity for deep engagement. I advocate for prioritizing quality over quantity, regarding both stimuli and, particularly, products.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– For the past 1.5 years, I've had the privilege of working on a dream project. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by craftsmanship and how you can create the most fantastic works with creativity and your hands. So it was a dream come true, when I was invited by Georg Jensen to design an innovative piece that would test the limits of silversmith craftsmanship and celebrate innovation and creativity. I began studying the history of Georg Jensen, alongside hands-on training in silversmithing. The result is INTOO, a large, wall-mounted jewelry-ornament that offers an immersive experience, prompting viewers to become aware of the present and dream of the future by viewing the past from a new perspective.

Nestled between the striking silhouette of the library Den Sorte Diamant (The Black Diamond) and the parliament, Christiansborg Palace, lies a little green oasis: Bibliotekshaven (the Royal Library's Garden). Just a few steps away, you'll find BLOX, a multifunctional building complex located on the harbour front and home to the Danish Architecture Centre (DAC), which will host a dedicated exhibition during 3daysofdesign. Along Frederiksholms Kanal, you'll find Kongernes Lapidarium (The Lapidarium of Kings). Once a brewery that quenched the thirst of soldiers, during 3daysofdesign you'll have exclusive access to a curated exhibition featuring outstanding contemporary design.
The Royal Library's Garden is worth a visit in and of itself. A tranquil haven in the middle of the bustling city. Proviantpasagen 1, 1218 Copenhagen Go visit The Black Diamond Library. The teenage bedroom. Perhaps the word makes you think of posters of popstars, gaming computers and stacks of dirty dishes. But it's not just that. The needs for room decoration are radically changing in these years as teenagers' values and behaviours evolve. Their lives unfold largely on digital platforms, and their interest in climate and recycling is increasing. How can future design accommodate this, and can we draw inspiration from teenagers' needs and dreams in the way we design? At DAC (Danish Architecture Centre) three young Danish design firms present their visions for the design of the future teenage bedroom with the exhibition 'Teenage Dreams'. Each with their take on how digitisation, sustainability, mental well-being and the use of social media affect and alter teenagers’ needs and desires for their private spaces. You can also experience videos featuring young teenagers talking about their own dream rooms, and the photo art project 'Still Life of Teenagers' by sociologist and photographer Barbara Marstrand, presenting snapshots from contemporary teenage bedrooms. 'Teenage Dreams', 12 June 2024 to 5 January 2025. NB! In connection with 3daysofdesign, the admission to the exhibition is free. Bryghuspladsen 10, 1473 Copenhagen

Text May Kjærsgaard Photo PR, Andreas ThaulowWhat's your dream?
– My dream is for assistive furniture to be normalised to the point where you use a cane before you fall. Design has the immense power to influence the way we think and speak of aging, of impairments and of death. I want my designs to help facilitate conversations about these subjects and bring hope and dignity to this phase in life. My role and my mission are simply to ensure that beautiful, respectful and dignified designs can be delivered to everyone in all of life's phases. Whether you are old or young, rich or poor, energetically living or soon dying, you should have the opportunity to get products that can bring pride and joy into your life. Not only function. My wish is that as "ordinary" furniture or products, we should be able to buy the furniture and assistive aids we need in stores everywhere.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I'm a practical and stubborn dreamer. You can say I'm in a slow hurry to get things done. There is something essentially wrong when we fear getting older, when we don't value our elders as resources, or when we are afraid to talk about the fact that life has an end. I want to change that. Growing older and dying are the only certainties in life and something we should cherish the same way we cherish a newborn
beginning its life. I dream of breaking these taboos in hopes of improving the quality of life for many and opening up important conversations in life with people in between. I believe that taboos are suppressing us as humans, which is why I find it so important to challenge them.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– I think the world needs less furniture and more furniture! We continue to produce the same types of furniture in new ways, while simultaneously leaving many needs unfulfilled. Around the world, people are increasingly growing older, and with that comes a need for furniture that caters them.
Share your thought on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– 'Dare to dream' to me is not an option but a condition to live and simply a must. It’s essential to challenge your fear of dreaming big to create real changes. A specific example of where I dared to dream – or maybe rather dared to feel – was when I made my coffin Ro (Calm), one of my newest and biggest projects. A product designed with pure intuition and a deep sense of necessity. I just had to succeed with the design regardless. When making Ro, I had to deal with the fact that my grandmother was dying. I was up close and personal with her death and my sorrow almost every day, and I felt a great responsibility to honour both my grandparents with this last goodbye.

For over 300 years, Holmen has served a series of important maritime functions as the former grounds for the naval base of the Royal Danish Navy. At one point, it was even home for warehouses for coal and paper. Only in recent years has Holmen entered a new chapter in its story: Connecting its naval past with a new axis of urban design, it features art schools, galleries, performance venues, dockside bars and restaurants. Heading south, you'll reach the Danish Art and Design Workshops, open to the public exclusively during 3daysofdesign. Heading north towards Refshaleøen, you'll pass by the new Opera Garden, which features exciting pop-up installations during this year’s festival.

KUGLEGAARDEN AND THE HOUSE OF LIGHT
Louis Poulsen, renowned for its iconic lighting designs, has been intimately involved in the redevelopment of the area around Kuglegaarden on Holmen, emphasising its commitment to Danish design history and innovation. –The brand's presence in Kuglegaarden, this square that used to store cannon balls, contributes to the blend of historical reverence and modern innovation in design, and aligns with the island's transformation from an industrial site to a hub of creative activities, emphasising sustainable and forward-thinking design practices, says London-based TF Chan, author of a forthcoming book about the company. – Kuglegaarden is certainly a credit to the city in terms of how it's planned, how it integrates with the neighbourhood. It's a credit to the architects who have restored the building, while ensuring that it's very well integrated into the contemporary elements surrounding it. I think it is also important that these courtyards are open to the general public – and that was a decision made by a city authority. The whole area has been designated public space, and whenever you walk by, you see how the courtyard itself becomes a living part of that space. People are always there, having coffee on the grass or reading a book. Kuglegårdsvej 19-23, 1434 Copenhagen

Come
Once the bustling heart of the city's paper industry, Papirøen, or Paper Island, has in recent years been undergoing drastic transformation – evolving from a locus of trade and manufacture into a cultural landmark that overflows with architectural ingenuity.
The connecting link between Copenhagen's historic city centre and the formerly industrial districts of Holmen and Refshaleøen which are quickly becoming its future, Papirøen is a stepping stone that leads visitors into the city's innovative core. On the occasion of 3daysofdesign 2024, we engaged two titans of design excellence and architectural innovation who have a distinctive contemporary presence on Papirøen: COBE Architects and Fritz Hansen.
Danish firm COBE Architects has played a transformative role in redeveloping Papirøen, shaping its evolution from an industrial zone into a vibrant and dynamic new neighbourhood. Housing apartments, public halls and cultural venues – as well as public spaces, both indoors and outdoors –COBE's designs for Papirøen have already become architectural landmarks for residents and visitors alike. Seamlessly blending the raw authenticity of the district's industrial roots with the sleek minimalism of contemporary design, COBE's contributions to Papirøen reflect Copenhagen's architectural evolution, its ethos of communal space and environmental harmony.
We spoke with COBE founder Dan Stubbegaard about the future of cities, the possibilities of architecture and how the two go hand in hand.
Can you describe the vision underpinning your transformation of Papirøen?
– Both Papirøen and the Opera Park are post-industrial areas, previously off limits to the public, and both projects focused on opening up the sites to the public as dynamic and vibrant places in central Copenhagen. They do so in different ways: The Opera Park provides a much-needed, publicly accessible green oasis in the heart of the dense city centre, while Papirøen offers a place where both public and private life can coexist. In that way, both projects are examples of how Copenhagen is transforming from an industrial city to a place for people.
How does COBE's work reflect and respect the historical and cultural context of the area?
– Papirøen is a very historical place in Copenhagen, situated on the border between the former navy islands of Holmen and Christianshavn – the city's old industrial warehouse district. Our design for the district is therefore based on reimagining the unique spirit of the place and creating future-proof
IN OPERAPARKEN (the Opera Park) next to the Opera House you find Væksthuset, a combined parking garage, greenery and restaurant.
architecture that balances with the historical surroundings – both fitting in and standing out at the same time. In that way, the historic warehouses of Holmen and Christianshavn, along with the old storage buildings on Papirøen, have inspired the design of the new Papirøen.
How did COBE Architects balance innovation with practicality in terms of framing the district as a destination for tourists and locals alike?
– It has been very important to create a place where both public and private life can coexist. Therefore, the island will contain both condominiums, cooperative social housing, a hotel and a water culture house – all interconnected at ground level with public halls and a harbour promenade. The halls pay homage to the former industrial halls on the island – some up to 9 metres high, open and flexible, which will house diverse, cultural facilities such as street food markets and event spaces. The mix of functions will make the island accessible to all, creating a place for people and showcasing Copenhagen's generous urban living, which can attract tourists and visitors while maintaining a strong local presence.
Papirøen residences are experienced as a coherent aesthetic volume from up close, but there are certain perspectives from which they interrupt the skyline. How did you balance consideration of the local environment with a sense of the larger urban fabric or framework of the city – and was this a challenge?
– Papirøen has its own unique island identity, but it is also positioned within a row of islets developed for industrial purposes along the Copenhagen waterfront. The architecture of these surrounding islands is defined by the pitchedroof motif – the warehouses in Christianshavn and the old military facilities of Holmen, the former navy yard. The new buildings at Papirøen are an interpretation of this distinctive feature, which incorporates the roof profile as a unifying design parameter.
– The entire development is designed as one big perimeter block, with gables facing the harbourfront and long roofs that mirror the historical warehouses along the harbourfront. The unique Papirøen roof profile is intended as a contemporary interpretation of this motif. But instead of a dark shelter for storage, these new "warehouses" will act as welllit apartment buildings in varying scales, all in a toneddown material palette extracted from the local context of yellow brick, concrete and wood. The division into several smaller units, some taller than others, contributes to a varied experience at eye level. At the same time, the architecture defines an overall identity for Papirøen as a new unique profile on the Copenhagen harbour skyline.
How does COBE's approach to the Papirøen project build on the broader narrative of Copenhagen as a city of architectural innovation?
– Located within a cultural "trinity" between the Royal Opera House and
the Royal Playhouse, Paper Island's unique location has provided an opportunity for developing a new significant cultural nerve centre in the city. The vision for our project has been to create an informal cultural icon for Copenhagen – not so much an architectural icon – but more a place that invites everyone in and a place which offers a wide range of public activities. This way, Papirøen will hopefully provide a different and more diverse cultural urban life than the one represented by the guests at the opera and the playhouse. The island is loved and known in Copenhagen as a place that does not exist anywhere else. It will be a public attraction made possible by the flexible and robust ground floor halls with the spatial capacity for everchanging urban events.
On the occasion of 3daysofdesign, Fritz Hansen is exploring contemporary design within architecture through a trilogy of experiences at three new Papirøen related spaces, all designed by COBE Architects: Operaparken, Væksthuset and Papirøen. Using COBE's architecture as contextual collabo rator, Fritz Hansen will stage compelling exhibitions of its outdoor collection, its hospitality collection and a range of thoughtprovoking modernworkspace configurations, all embodying the ethos of "aesthetic islands of wellbeing".
We spoke with Marketing Director Mark Hammerich about how design can engage with architecture – and why it should.
How does the "islands of wellbeing" concept reflect Fritz Hansen's design ethos?
– At Fritz Hansen we strive in our interior decoration to create aesthetic "islands" of extraordinary design that elevate personal wellbeing. Furniture designed for spaces where people meet, interact and engage, balanced in form and functionality. Places where design helps us improve life.
Can you describe the synergy between Fritz Hansen's designs and the modern architecture of COBE, particularly in the context of the new harbourside destinations in Copenhagen?
– COBE creates architecture with clear references to the immediate surroundings – past and present – and we follow that same principle in design, like the bricks we've made especially for Papirøen, which are infused with historic significance. They are made to last into the future. COBE's Operaparken brings a unique sense of nature into the architecture; and this relates perfectly to the distinctive, organic shapes in the Fritz Hansen design collec tion, all inspired by nature. This year we are exploring "design in architecture". One is nothing without the other.
How do Fritz Hansen's configurations at Papirøen represent the evolving needs of the modern workspace?
– The distinctive design in the Fritz Hansen design collection stands out clearly in open space where many people spend time during their daily work activities. The idea is to create beautiful design islands of wellbeing for people, even when they're at work. We are focused on the need for more flexibility in the curation of offices and professional spaces, with a fundamental purpose of presenting inviting workspaces for modern day people.
What do you believe the interaction between modern, living design companies and historical sites like Papirøen can "do" for us, as a society, in 2024 and onward?
– If you don't know your past, you don't know yourself. The two Copenhagen harbour islands where we are located during 3daysofdesign hold a rich and inspiring history that is now the context, launchpad and backdrop for creating new and exciting experiences. Know the past and be relevant in the now, when forming the future. Always try to be extraordinary in design, in architecture and in life.
Once a busy industrial area, Refshaleøen (the Fox Tail Island) has been re-purposed into a dynamic space for creative minds and design enthusiasts. The island's industrial past is reflected in its raw architecture, visible in the rusted steel structures and refurbished warehouses which offer a glimpse into its rich history. Today, Refshaleøen is one of Copenhagen's trendy neighbourhoods, nicknamed Reffen. From the Reffen street food market to Michelin-star restaurants, it's an inclusive community with an entrepreneurial eco-focused spirit. Check out the 3daysofdesign Reffen Hub for details about the district and the programme of talks revolving around sustainability and materials of tomorrow.

The 'Design Kan' podcast was founded in Copenhagen by Kristina May, Director of AM Copenhagen, a graphic-design studio. Created to share insights and knowledge about design and branding, not just within Denmark but globally, the podcast emphasises the impactful role design can play in society. We asked her, what dreams can and should do in the world we currently inhabit? – One of the pivotal skills inherent to design is the ability to envision futures yet to materialise, allowing others to dream alongside us and to navigate towards them. While some may call it dreaming, I refer to it as ethical design. Even individuals lacking formal design education can employ the design process to make purposeful decisions in both their professional and personal lives. My aspiration is for everyone to become architects of a new world; one founded on the principles of fostering healthy individuals, a sustainable planet, and robust economic systems, says Kristina May. – Design possesses the power to catalyse the transformative change that we, and the world, so urgently require. This lies at the core of the purpose of design. However, it is imperative to steer in the right direction, as design also holds the potential to construct a dystopian future if not executed with the right intentions. WHEN
Montana Furniture and fashion first mover Mads Nørgaard Copenhagen celebrate their respective classics – the Nørgaard stripes and the Montana Free shelving system as well as the Kevi-series – by merging them. The collaboration honours the quintessence of Danish design: functionality, timelessness, quality and a shared passion for colours. The collaboration's starting point is Mads Nørgaard's signature striped textile in two colours: Ruby (a soft pink) and Balsamic (a saturated brown), both found in Montana's comprehensive colour catalogue. The textile has been applied to the panel of the iconic Free shelving-system, adding an expressive edge to the design. Furthermore, the textile has been used to upholster the Kevi Office Chair, which transforms it from a classic to a statement piece embodying style, function and comfort. Make sure you don't miss this joint venture launching during 3daysofdesign. Award winning designer Maria Bruun works with furniture, interiors and exhibitions at the junction between the artistic and commercial, insisting that one does not exclude the other. During 3daysofdesign, you can experience Maria Bruun's design as part of the exhibitions at Fredericia and Pholc.
– Design raises the questions: Who are you in relation to your surroundings? How does the form and material relate to your mind and body? How do you fit into the whole? I represent contemporary Danish design in this very moment which is why I dream of contributing to the definition of what constitutes Danish design in the future – what will make our extensive heritage and tradition sustainable for the next fifty or hundred years.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– To create works and furniture that extend beyond my time. We initially have to think about the full circle of life for the products we create – from the broad spectrum of types of wood to reforestation. The idea of sustainability must be represented in the piece when you design. It could be through flexible functionality, where one creates multiple opportunities or scales within one design, or by ensuring that the materials are easily repaired, replaced or disposed. However, I believe the most important value is to create objects with high design quality. A piece of furniture that can stand the test of time and is aesthetically pleasing with wellthought-out details carried out in the best craftsmanship and materials, and that the users will care for, repair and carry on through generations, is what is most sustainable.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– I believe that the world needs more cross-pollination between disciplines. In the dynamic ecosystem of creative fields such as craft, furniture design, architecture and art, the interplay and exchange of ideas are essential for reimagining the possibilities, ultimately enriching the lives of individuals and communities through thoughtful and holistic design solutions.
– I believe that the world needs less free work in the design field. For far too long, designers have endured inadequate compensation for their work. Envision a future where sustainability certification extends to both the design itself and the well-being of the designer.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to dream'.
– For me, it means approaching my work as an independent furniture designer with curiosity, respect and care. My dream is simple: to create beautiful furniture that serve as everyday scenography for people's lives. To develop designs that not only fulfill functional needs but also contribute to the aesthetic experience of time and place. This involves a deep love for design, meticulous craftsmanship and a thoughtful selection of materials. Ultimately, I see the viewer and the user as integral parts of the objects — a seamless integration where design becomes part of one's basic self-understanding.
Carlsberg Byen is a brilliant example of a neighbourhood transformed through urban design. Originally the private industrial zone of Carlsberg Brewery in the 1800s, the district has been revitalised and revamped into a mix of modern architecture with historic elements that retain Carlsberg's cultural heritage and charm. To this end, e.g., the original entrance featuring four life-size granite elephants remains intact. Down the road are modern residences, retail and design shops, bars and restaurants. During 3daysofdesign, the district will be full of opportunities to learn about city planning, whilst enjoying visits to a handful of specially selected exhibitions.

From the iconic restaurant space he created for Noma to his minimalist boutique for Mark Kenly Domino Tan Studio, the work of David Thulstrup's eponymous studio is immediately recognisable. Seamlessly integrating textures and surfaces that illuminate the character of any space, Thustrup's style is contextually sensitive, drawing bespoke techniques and raw materials into refined aesthetic harmony.
What's your dream?
– I have many different dreams, small ones and bigger ones. One is a country house I can build and design with all my experience and design vision. Another is to design a hotel with a unique location in the desserts of Arizona or the fjords in Norway, which would also enable me to enage my experience with residential projects and hospitality projects.
How do you dream of contributing to the world?
– I want to design environments, interiors, houses and hotels that elevate one's sense of a place and enrich the architectural journey and the experience of space. I want to contribute with design that endures for many generations to come, design that is rooted in materiality and form: the things that last.
What do you think the world needs more of? And less of?
– Since we are in the realm of design and architecture, I think we
need less architecture and design that is chasing trends. There are so many new-built environments that are rooted in trend and language rather than in form and materiality, in a connection between the in door and exterior. I think we need to design with what is timeless in mind; to create better exteriors more generally, and to develop architecture that is anchored in a better connection between indoor and exterior.
Share your thoughts on the theme 'Dare to Dream'.
– Dreaming is essential for all creative work. It is a privilege to collab orate with clients who open up about their aspirations, as it enables me to apply my expertise and creativity to bring their dreams to life. My own dreams revolve around transforming projects and aiding clien ts in creating their ideal environments. It is truly fulfilling to work with individuals who have bold ambitions – such as chefs conceptualising a new restaurant, or homeowners envisioning their dream house – as I am able to be a part in shaping these visions.
