One-room living: How to live large in a small space (BPT) - As we seek to simplify our lives, the desire for small-space living - even one-room living - seems more attractive than ever. But whether you’re ready to join the tiny house movement or just want to get the most out of a compact space in your home, there are easy things you can do to make a small space look, feel and function like a larger one. “There’s no need to sacrifice great design if you live in a small space. A few simple changes are all you need to make it feel bigger, more beautiful and a reflection of your personality,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams. Look overhead and underfoot. Consider using every conceivable space to please the eye -even the ceiling. “I love the idea of reflecting the shape of your dining room table with a bold accent color on the ceiling above it,” says Jordan. Another idea: define a space at the floor level with an area rug beneath a couch and side table. Multitasking solutions. If you’re always multitasking, your furniture can do the same. Place an ottoman with a hidden storage compartment or flip-top serving tray beside a comfy chair. Move a twin bed next to the wall and add big patterned pillows to create seating space by day, and sleeping space by night. The pillows can also provide extra floor seating for entertaining. The answer is written on the wall. Walls can also be multifunctional. Sketch Pad, a clear gloss coating, can turn any surface into a dry erase board, and goes over any paint color. Instead of cluttering up the walls with bulletin boards, write directly on the wall by a computer desk, or scribble messages and doodles in the kitchen. Simply wipe it clean with a dry eraser. Have lofty ambitions. Consider creating a sleeping loft. It’s not only cozy, but leaves extra living space below. A Murphy bed that folds up discretely into the wall is another space saver. Find a focal point. It can make a space feel larger. Try painting a corner, such as a reading nook, in a bright, bold color for a mini-room effect. Or paint a piece of furniture or picture frame and elevate it to something special. Get creative with cabinetry. Take advantage of cabinetry with built-in storage features, from pullout racks that create added pantry space, to bathroom cabinets equipped with laundry hampers, hairdryer hooks and bins for grooming items. Expect the unexpected. Instead of painting the outside of your front door to make a bold statement, paint the inside of the door with a pop of color, such as bright yellow Cheerful or magenta Juneberry. Is a wood or composite deck right for your home? (BPT) - Outdoor living is a home improvement trend that can’t be ignored. If you plan to add a deck to your house, remember the design is only one aspect of the planning process. The materials you decide to use can affect the project in numerous ways, from the initial investment to maintenance years from now. Deciding between wood and composite decking can seem complex. You may have heard composite is superior but costly. You also may have heard that wood is greener yet more susceptible to bugs. Get the facts when it comes to wood versus composite so you can make the right choice for your home. Cost : Building a deck with composite materials will cost more than virgin wood initially, but not as much as most people think. The substructure is the same cost for either option and the remainder of the project could cost about 25 percent more for composite. That cost, though, is often recouped over time because there is little maintenance required with composites, while maintaining a wood deck can cost hundreds of dollars each year. 84 Years Strong... During the Depression when many other companies failed, the Plaza looked for new ways to attract customers. The Plaza Art Fair was started in 1932 as a promotion to draw shoppers to the area and to lift their spirits. Held on an empty lot on the southwest corner of Nichols Road and Central, where Tiffany & Co. is now (see the photo above), 90 artists displayed their paintings by leaning them against trees and benches. Paintings were priced from $1 to ten dollars. Artists enjoyed interacting with each other and having conversations with those in the crowd about their work. All agreed it was a successful first-time event and should continue. And continue it has. Encompassing nine city-blocks and welcoming a crowd of over 250,000, the fair has certainly evolved from the early years when it was held at small, various locations throughout the Plaza. In the 1940s it was located in what is now Chandler Courtyard by The Cheesecake Factory. Initially the artists built their own screens with chicken wire and hoped they could withstand the weather. Weathering the affects of the flood of 1977 is one the most significant dates in the Plaza Art Fair’s history. The Plaza and the City were devastated by the deaths and destruction from the September 12th flood, but many gathered to help clean-up the Plaza and prepare for the fair, only ten days away. And that they did. After celebrating its 84th year in 2015 with 240 artists from across the country, the Plaza Art Fair has impressively become a top-ranked, national art event. But, perhaps even more impressively, it continues to be a weekend of people simply celebrating art and each other, as well as Kansas City’s unofficial welcome to the fall season. 20
