Dear reader, Some 26 years ago I started working at Bolidt. Since then I have travelled the world and got to know many interesting industries: food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, farming, road building and, of course, maritime. At Bolidt we really push the envelope when it comes to exploring the endless possibilities of thermosetting polymers. All in order to make a significant contribution to a better environment and a sustainable future. We do so in different fields: design, durability, safety, energy/data and hygiene. Our slogan -‘No Limits’ - sums up our ambition. Every day my colleagues and I work on the most innovative applications, realizing some of the best and most challenging projects worldwide. What is very important, though, is that we have a lot of fun doing so! My years of working at Bolidt have convinced me that the DNA of our company is truly unique, controlling as we do the entire production chain – from R&D to final application – and serving some of the most exciting markets worldwide. In this magazine we would like to show you our versatility, with a particular emphasis on the maritime industry. As a big fan of what Bolidt does – after all it’s my life! – I am proud to present a wide range of projects covering every facet of this fascinating sector. It takes 104 pages to do this, but it easily could have been 104,000! There is so much to tell, and we are so enthusiastic, that sometimes our words may not always do justice to the subject. But we hope you find it interesting and informative and get a sense of our passion for this industry. To present our unique DNA to our clients we are in the process of building the Bolidt Innovation Center, which you can read more about in this magazine. This is a high tech facility, due to be opened this year, where our capacity for creativity and innovation, and our many years of experience, will be brought together. The Bolidt Innovation Center will be a great spectacle, but also an interesting museum, charting the history of thermosetting polymers. At the same time, visitors will be able to look over the shoulders of Bolidt employees’ and see how our innovative products are created. At Bolidt we believe in the added value of co-creation and for this reason we will be inviting our clients to come up with their own applications for thermosetting polymers through the Bolidt Innovation Center. You can also read about some great cruise ships that Bolidt has been working on, such as Celebrity Edge, Symphony of the Seas and many of the new generation of expedition vessels. Throughout these pages we give you behind the scenes access to find out, for example, how Bolidt’s sound proofing systems reduce impact noise on board to a minimum. We also present some of our partners. Boteka is a top manufacturer of special prefabricated products for cruise ships all over the world; Simwave has 59 simulators at its disposal, allowing crew members to rehearse any disaster scenario in any port in all weather conditions; and Tillberg Design is one of the many design companies that Bolidt works with. This Swedish company regularly specifies our solutions for cruise projects, highlighting Bolidt’s role as an ‘enabler’ in the interior design process. It takes a passionate and determined team to complete the wide range of challenging and fantastic projects in the maritime industry that we do. Working from our offices in the Netherlands, Miami and Shanghai, we aim to carry on doing so for many years to come. Enjoy the magazine, Jacco van Overbeek, Director Maritime Division Bolidt

REGARDING

COMPLEX ISSUES

AS BUSINESS AS USUAL IS OUR RAISON D’ÊTRE

BOLIDT HAS BEEN ON A MISSION FOR 55 YEARS NOW: TO REPLACE TRADITIONAL MATERIALS WITH SYNTHETICS AND SO DO OUR BIT TOWARDS FOSTERING A BETTER AND HEALTHIER LIVING ENVIRONMENT IN TERMS OF DESIGN, SUSTAINABILITY, SAFETY, HYGIENE AND DATA & ENERGY. THIS MISSION HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN PLENTY OF INNOVATIONS, INCLUDING IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY. CRUISE SHIPS, SUPERYACHTS, FRIGATES, SUBMARINES, DRILLING RIGS AND FISHING BOATS: BOLIDT’S PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN USED EVERYWHERE.

Bolidt has been a supplier to the Dutch navy for many years and also supplies such parties as the German and French navies. Bolidt’s systems provide optimum protection for steel in the offshore industry, and for cruise ships too. Every year, Bolidt is asked to work on cruise ship construction and refit projects. These projects involve replacing the existing deck teak with our sustainable Bolideck® series. “More often than not, before Bolidt can even set to work, the ship’s steel needs to be repaired,” explains Rientz Willem Bol, Managing Director and owner of Bolidt. “I’m not kidding, there are holes in the deck,” he insists. “If the deck’s been covered in teak for quarter of a century, then the steel underneath will be worn. Wood just doesn’t provide enough protection.” What Bol is getting at is that as long as there are cruise ship firms insisting on using real teak, then Bolidt’s task in this sector – to replace traditional materials with synthetic ones – isn’t over. The company has since grown to become market leader in cruise ship decks, he adds enthusiastically.

Bolidt devises solutions for the entire maritime industry

Surprised customers Bol’s passion sets him apart. For over 50 years now, his business has been eagerly seeking out new uses and new markets for Bolidt. Halfway through the last century, the founders discovered a new means of protecting concrete and steel from rust, cracks and wear and tear: synthetic resin that can be spread like a liquid material, but that will set rock solid after a while. Providing protection is still an important characteristic of Bolidt’s thermosetting synthetics, but the company now manages to fulfil many more promises. Like the wide grins on passengers’ faces thanks to the

"In this industry we’re the only company in the world controlling the entire chain. Everything is done from one site" experience created and being responsible for the feeling of confidence and safety that comes from extending the lifespan of the ship or bridge. To be able to fulfil these promises, Bolidt’s systems are durable, hardwearing, water-resistant, safe and aesthetically pleasing. These qualities mean Bolidt’s synthetics have proven to be the perfect replacement for conventional materials. Asphalt on bridges, concrete on offshore platforms, tiles in the food industry and of course: teak on (cruise) ships. Unsurprisingly, Bolidt doesn’t do conventional. The company is all about innovation. “Being able to respond to complex issues is our raison d’être,” says Bol. “Over the years, we’ve moved further and further away from the easy projects that any provider is capable of taking on. Instead, we’ve been looking for markets where we’re really needed. Where our know-how is genuinely appreciated. This isn’t just about the material, but also about the approach taken to projects. We can fit 15,000 m2 of deck on a cruise ship within three weeks. No other market party can rival that.” Incredibly beautiful game Something else that’s unconventional is our organisational strategy, which evolved that way over time. The company’s founders had an unflinching faith in thermosetting synthetics, but through trial and error found that just selling the material wasn’t going to be enough. Bol: “The people handling the

material weren’t knowledgeable enough to be able to apply it properly. The upshot of this was that external contractors weren’t able to live up to the ideal envisaged by Bolidt. We needed to employ and train our own staff. This was a crucial step, as it signalled the start of our current, integrated company. Over the years that followed this move, we went on to specialise in more and more new fields without losing touch with what we’d done previously.” Bolidt has now integrated its entire production and marketing chain into a single organisation. The company has its own R&D center including a climate chamber where materials are invented and tested under all conditions. Bolidt produces the materials itself and then implements the systems exclusively with its own application teams. Marketing, sales, logistics, IT, SHEQ, operations: all under one roof. “In this industry, we’re the only company in the world controlling the entire chain,” says Bol. He believes that integration is “an incredibly beautiful game”. “Everything is done from one site. Staff see and speak to each other on a daily basis. There are no formal lines and an incredible hands-on mentality. We now have 250 employees, but we still feel like a family firm. Integration enables us to respond rapidly. If a cruise company were to place an order today, we’d be able to set to work in Miami in no time at all. Another advantage is the feedback we get from our own people. We take this and use it to develop new products. What’s more, if they’ve got any gripes about the material, then we need to listen. Your own people don’t lie to you.” From surface to interface In the maritime industry, too, the quest

12

for new uses and new markets has had an effect, to put it mildly. “You won’t be able to think of a sector in which Bolidt’s products aren’t being used,” says Jacco van Overbeek, Bolidt’s Maritime Division Director. In the cruise ship industry, Bolidt works on around eight new cruise ships every year. So far there have been over 400 new-build projects, recent examples of which include the Symphony of the Seas and the Norwegian Bliss. Cruise ship firms are increasingly replacing real teak with such materials as Bolideck® Future Teak, which is not only used for the deck but also for steps, swimming pools, jacuzzis and furniture. Van Overbeek stresses the fact that optimum protection for steel hasn’t been Bolidt’s only proposition for the cruise ship industry for a long time now. “Design is just as important. Our current systems offer endless design options and come in countless colours and patterns. We developed Bolideck® Glow especially for the cruise ship industry. This is a luminous deck material that stores solar power during the day and then emits light in the dark. It’s been an instant hit.”

Cost considerations previously saw the sector switch to concrete for the purposes of making the drilling rigs even and protecting them, but the sector has now totally switched back. Van Overbeek: “Customers used to think that concrete provided enough protection. Until they found out that the material weathers extremely quickly. Now they only want our synthetic systems. These are also anti-slip, making them the safest possible option for their staff.” The extreme durability of the systems means that companies that need to be operational 24/7 are keen to work with Bolidt. Bolidt’s decks are heat-resistant and shock-resistant, and reinforce the structure of frigates and submarines. Van Overbeek: “We’ve generated a lot of trust in the company over the past 55 years. Not just because of the material never breaking, but also because we control the end-to-end chain, enabling us to always fulfil our promises – something that is extremely important in this sector.”

It isn’t just the cruise ship industry looking for designer floors – owners of superyachts are eager Bolidt customers too. Bolidt is developing a flooring specially for the yacht industry that detects motion on board with the aid of sensor technology. Not only will this benefit safety, but it will also be a great way to save energy. Owners can operate both lighting and heating simply by boarding the vessel or being on board. In other words, from surface to interface.

A completely different sector in which 24-hour usability is required is the fishing industry. Van Overbeek: “Fish are caught, processed and packed on board. Fishing vessels are floating factories that can’t stay still because that would mean making a loss. Consequently, the decks inside and out must be extremely durable. Our products are everywhere—in the processing area, the freezer room and on the outside decks. And this isn’t just because of their durability; it’s because they have no seams either, making them exceedingly hygienic.” Think global, act local.

No failure, 24/7 Bolidt’s systems still provide optimum protection for steel in the offshore industry.

Miami and Shanghai Back to the cruise ship industry. With sites in Miami and Shanghai, the global market

“You won’t be able to think of a sector in which Bolidt’s products aren’t being used”

leader is moving away a little from the all-under-one-roof principle. Bolidt decided to get a foothold in the USA 18 years ago. 2016 saw the company open a site for the Chinese market too. “The most important shipping companies are in Miami and most cruise ships use the city as their home port. The Chinese market still needs to develop further, but Royal Caribbean Cruises and Carnival Cruise Lines are already in Shanghai. What’s more, the city is also home to the major shipyards capable of building the cruise ships,” explains Van Overbeek. The advantage of having a site in situ is rapid response, he says. “Coordinating refits from the Netherlands can be tricky. Services are also quicker if you’re located close to the shipyards and

shipping companies. Customers sometimes call us and say: “Could you come on board next week? We’ve got a problem.” There’s nothing better than being able to say you’ll be there tomorrow.”

Roald Amundsen: pioneer in polar exploration The Norwegian explorer Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872 – 1928) was a pioneer in polar exploration. Born in in a family of maritime trade, Roald promised his mother to stand out and become a doctor. When he was 21 his mother died and Amundsen immediately quit university for a life at sea. After successfully traversing Canada’s Northwest Passage in 1903, Amundsen was the first man on the South Pole in 1911. He reached the arctic waters early that year, after a journey of six months on his ship ‘Fram’. On October 19 Amundsen set out with four companions, four sledges and 52 dogs in a second attempt to cross Antarctica. The team and sixteen surviving dogs arrived at the South Pole on December 14. In June 1928 Amundsen died tragically. He disappeared while flying on a rescue mission in the Arctic. It is believed that the plane crashed in fog in the Barents Sea. Amundsen’s body was never found.

Passenger experience on board increasingly important

increasingly looking at the hotel industry and leaders in the field of hospitality experience. Today’s demanding traveller insists that the comfort on board is at least equivalent to that of a 4 or 5-star hotel. The keyword to meet this requirement: design. The right interior design can create the right feeling of luxury and a unique passenger experience. When it comes to interior design in the cruise industry, several trends can be identified. For example, today’s cruise ships are often extremely modern or even chic inside, using rich fabrics and materials, high-quality carpets and sleek designer furniture. This applies to the public areas but also to the cabins, which are no less comfortable than luxury hotel rooms. As a result, a cruise ship has more and more the look and feel of a super yacht, only on a large scale. The traditional lobby is increasingly replaced by a public space that is furnished as a living room with comfortable furniture and coffee tables. In short, a place where the traveller likes to stay. This also applies to the restaurants, which are

as I stepped into Bolidt’s headquarters for the first time last year I could immediately appreciate the huge possibilities offered by their solutions. Studying Bolidt’s way of doing things helped me focus on the future needs of the market, as well as the environment, and shape my own ideas about next generation superyachts.” Nick Mezas echoes these thoughts, paying tribute to the way Bolidt helps designers distinguish their work from others in this competitive sector: “Bolidt not only inspires designers with their synthetic systems, it encourages them to be daring and to experiment, with their products. This helps us build our vision for future generation superyacht

designs, but makes it fun as well!”

The world of yacht design has seen some incredible innovations in the last decade, and one of the designers leading the way is Turkish visionary Timur Bozca. Creative, positive minded, and always developing new skills, he is constantly inspired by unique ideas that help him to manifest his dreams into reality. Following his philosophy Everything for a reason, Timur has cultivated a keen eye for detail and always aims for perfection.

Timur is equally enthusiastic about the benefits of working with Bolidt in terms of unlocking innovation. “I have found that with Bolidt’s wide product range they are better able to meet your requests,” he says.”The fact that there are fewer limits, means more creativity! If you want to push the boundaries as a designer, you need a partner like Bolidt without any doubt.” Bolidt’s strong commitment to working with young designers in this specialist sector is stressed by Jacco van Overbeek, Director Maritime Division of Bolidt. He says,”It is vitally important that we engage with up-and-coming talent in the industry. This allows us to get valuable insights about the likely future direction of superyacht design and gives us a chance to inspire and encourage emerging

He obtained his bachelor degree in Automotive & Transport Design from the UK’s Coventry University, and then went on to boost his 3D modeling skills at Majenta Academy. After earning a master’s degree in Yacht Design from Italy’s Politecnico di Milano and winning different awards including Young Designer of The Year 2015, Timur opens his own design studio, introducing to the world his most unique luxury vehicle concepts. Timur Bozca designs are exquisite in style and innovative in execution.

designers, making they are fully aware of the capabilities of some of our exciting new products for superyacht decks and spaces.” One of the ways that Bolidt aims to inspire young designers is by inviting them to their headquarters in Hendrik-IdoAmbacht for a Bolidream experience. Bolidream is a creative session in the Bolidt laboratory, where young designers can get the chance to experiment with some of the latest products and technology. The ties forged such visits are long lasting. As Nick concludes,”The Bolidt team has always made me feel welcome and almost part of the family. Whenever I need information or have questions during projects, Bolidt is quick to reply and provide me with what I need. It is easier to embrace the future knowing that Bolidt will be there to join me, and other designers, along the way!”

Timur Bozca’s Black Swan super yacht is an ostentatious and bold design. The 229 foot vessel sports a rich black exterior and powerful lines — it even looks a bit devious, in the best possible way. The hull has a distinctive point, and a helicopter landing pad is placed prominently on its top deck.

Nicolò Piredda

Nick Mezas

Born in Nuoro, Sardinia (Italy), in June 1994, I started studying humanities at the Liceo Classico G. Asproni in Nuoro. In 2013 the academic studies continued getting into the design world with a technical education given by the Interior Design course of Politecnico di Milano. In this period I got in contact with several design fields, from houses, museums and temporary retails to product and graphic projects, designing concepts with different styles and focusing on material studies. I got the bachelor graduation in July 2016 presenting the Tund one Ventitré. During 2017 I attended the Master in Yacht Design of POLI. Design department of Politecnico di Milano where I had the opportunity to design the concept of two different projects: the 38m semi-displacement Motor boat with Nuance Team and the 80ft Fast-Cruiser Sailboat with NAMI Team.

Already since I was very young, I’ve had a passion for superyachts. People close to me remember that I, as a child, drew on paper – and on walls – the lines of the superyachts I dreamt about, all the while knowing that I would later become a yacht designer. Now, after years of closely following the evolution in yacht design and having acquired a degree in naval architecture, things have only changed for the better. I still aim for those unique and timeless lines, but now in a perfect marriage with functionality and practicality. And what I consider a major advantage is that I have now acquired the skills to not only give expression to my own dreams, but to also help others realize theirs. To that end I, together with my team, gladly accept all the input a client wishes to provide, knowing that said participation will almost guarantee that the final design at hand will be unique in more ways than one.

The first important step of my nascent career is signed by M/Y Galàna, the 60m Explorer Yacht designed for Oceanco that has been chosen as Winner of the Young Designer of the Year Award 2018. It was elected during the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards on 28th January 2018 in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR

#TAYDG A few years ago Esthec, Oceanco, Boat International and Bolidt joined together to arrange a special event to commemorate Dutch yachting innovation; The Annual Young Designers Getaway. This has now become an annual event. The two-day event creates a relaxed and collaborative atmosphere for the next generation of superyacht designers to freely share ideas with their peers and industry experts alike. So keep an eye out for the next one.

DUTCH

DANCE

DOMINATES

Seven of the best djs in the world are Dutch, including number one Martin Garrix, according to the latest public vote organised by DJ Mag. It is the third year in a row that Garrix has held the top spot. Martin Garrix, who is just 22 and whose real name is Martijn Garritsen, signed his first record deal when he was just 16. Second in the list is the Belgian duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike while Hardwell, the Dutch dj who has now stopped touring and previous two times champion, was third. The rest of the Dutch line-up are Armin van Buuren (5) who has topped the ranking five times, TiĂŤsto, who headed the list three times, new entries Don Diabolo and Oliver Heldens (7 and 9) and Afrojack, who holds on to his eighth place.

50

Why are there so many Dutch DJs in the electronic music industry? Bobbing to a beat is second nature in the Netherlands which is leading the global electronic dance music scene and is the home of the world’s top DJs. It is so deep-rooted in the culture it will grab a hold of you anywhere and when you least expect it.

Whether you’re out clothing shopping or watching TV you’ll find yourself raving to a beat in no time. You’ll be minding your business and boom some wicked tune will seep through the speakers at the station and you’ll bust a move in public. It is crazy out here. Guaranteed the bug will get you during the commercial break of your favourite programme. It’s no surprise then that seven of the top 10 DJs in the world are from the Netherlands. The export of popular Dutch music is worth roughly €158.8 million and rising. The dominance of Dutch DJs on music charts has paved the way for 170 dance music events in the country with 2.7 million annual visitors every year and has become a significant feature of the economy. The Netherlands electronic dance culture dates back to the late 1980s. In the last decade Dutch DJs consistently rank high in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs. From 2003 onwards at least two Dutch DJs have been included in the world’s top 3. You have to ask yourself what the x-factor is that makes these Dutch boys Top DJs. Well apart from a super cute accent (shuper as Garrix pronounces it).

These guys are so valuable to the country that in 2014 five of them were revered on a postage stamp of their own. The October release of the stamps coincided with the 2014 Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), one of the world’s largest gatherings of dance music professionals, artists and fans. It’s sheer and utter wizardry and it will grab a hold of you no matter how conservative you imagine yourself to be. Are your ‘hands up in the air’ yet? It’s like being in a scene of The Matrix only people are walking around with headphones to access the grid.

REDUCING IMPACT NOISE ON BOARD TO A MINIMUM TODAY’S PASSENGERS PREFER NOT TO HEAR THAT THEY’RE ON BOARD A CRUISE SHIP. THAT’S WHY CRUISE COMPANIES ARE PLACING EVERSTRICTER DEMANDS ON NOISE REDUCTION. LIKE ITS CLIENTS, BOLIDT IS ALWAYS PUSHING THE ENVELOPE. WHAT’S OUR SECRET? A CONTINUOUS DRIVE TO INNOVATE. BOLIDT’S SOUNDPROOFING SYSTEMS CAN REDUCE IMPACT NOISE ON BOARD TO A MINIMUM.

Droning engines, the footsteps of crew and passengers, lifts going up and down, music from nightclubs and moving gym equipment: sound never stops on a cruise ship. To ensure passengers in their cabins can sleep in peace and quiet, major cruise line companies trust Bolidt’s expertise. Bolidt’s synthetic decks are Paul de Ruijter BSc., Senior Technical Support Specialist at Bolidt

contribute to reducing impact noise in the spaces below. By working together in this way, our expertise has grown enormously over the years.” Nowadays, the noise-reducing qualities of Bolidt’s materials are tested not only in shipyards, but also on the computer. Bolidt collaborates in this with Lloyd's Register, an agency specialising in the technical research and analysis of sound and noise reduction. De Ruijter: “Lloyd’s does calculations for Bolidt in which a number of different variables, such as the properties of the materials in our synthetic deck systems, are entered in a sophisticated computer model. We then test this against the results of the practical test that we carried out above the cabin. With the computer model, we can vary the construction of the decks endlessly and determine the ideal mix of top layer and underlay to achieve the desired noise reduction. This has thrown up material mixes that we couldn’t have found without the model. Together with Lloyd’s, we’ve been able to successfully predict the noise level in cabins for several cruise ships.” Increasingly challenging Over the 25 years that Bolidt has been developing its synthetic deck systems, the question from cruise companies has never really changed: make sure that the decibel level on board decreases. De Ruijter: “Of course, fulfilling this strict requirement is getting harder and harder. It’s like telling an athlete to keep improving on their best time. But that’s what’s so great about this: we strive to set world records every day.”

Sound is not only an issue on cruise ships. Noise reduction also plays a big role in other industries in which Bolidt operates. Through various innovations, Bolidt reduces or prevents noise resonance, contact noise and structural noise in these industries. Examples of these innovations are mass suspension systems in floating floor systems, viscoelastic Bolidt (under) layers and glues. Bolidt will also continue to innovate in this area in the future.

REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN AND PANORAMIC VIEWS CELEBRITY EDGE: FLOATING AT SEA

Cruise ships can stand out in many ways. The latest acquisition by Celebrity Cruises excels in cutting-edge design. The innovative core, the revolutionary magic carpet and the fresh interior ideas of worldfamous designers: everything is on the edge on board the Celebrity Edge. The catchy slogan says it all: Celebrity Edge. A ship designed to leave the future behind. The newest acquisition by Celebrity Cruises may not be the largest ship with a length of 306 meters, but it definitely is unique in design. The Celebrity Edge was designed entirely in 3D, resulting in new, hitherto unknown design options. The aim was to give passengers on board – there is room for 2,908 passengers – a completely new

Art takes courage

AR

CREATING ARTISTIC VOGUES OF DISCOVERY AND ESCAPE

“AS ARTISTS WE KNOW HOW IMPORTANT ART IS NOT ONLY FOR YOUR EYES, BUT FOR YOUR MIND AND HEART AS WELL.” THE SPEAKER IS JONNY AASETH, ONE HALF OF ‘BROSLO’ - THE OSLO-BASED ARTIST BROTHERS WHO HAVE BECOME STRONG ADVOCATES FOR ART AS A CENTRAL CRUISE SHIP EXPERIENCE. “When you are onboard a ship for long periods, you need to trigger the senses in different ways and art can help do that. If you imagine people to be the lungs of a ship, then art would be the fresh air,” Jonny explains. Jonny and his brother Nikko started Broslo as part of a project to re-build an old factory in Oslo as a space to create works of art. Jonny recalls, “Initially we used old wood we found in the buildings we were working in, but it quickly escalated to bigger projects and then on to exhibitions of our work. Today we work with many different types of materials, but many of our pieces contains light in one way or another. It doesn’t matter if it’s LED, neon, fibre optics or just regular lightbulbs, light always gives it a little bit of extra feeling.”

68

Mein Schiff 5

Broslo has worked on a number of cruise ship projects, including two sculpture installations on the Holland America Line ship Nieuw Statendam. Nikko recalls: “Both of them were supposed to have musical themes. We ended up doing a huge ‘melting’ rock guitar that we made out of wood which we covered with Bolidt material, and we also did a grand piano infinity mirror.” Broslo also provided artwork for four staircases on the Symphony of the Seas, including eight backlit lenticular prints plus backdrops. “Like most of the art we do, our cruise ship work is a mix between pop art and more abstract compositions,” says Jonny. “We always try to make every project as cool as possible regardless of what the task might be. Art for us is about spreading happiness and colours - even if the brief doesn’t necessarily say so!” Broslo has been working together with Bolidt for the last few years and Nikko describes it as

being “a really fun ride!” He adds: “We always dreamed of a material that dried fast and was sustainable and glossy at the same time. So when we got the first batch of Bolidt we were amazed.” The brothers’ approach often includes an ‘action painting’ element, and the fact that the end result may not be known at the start demands exceptional flexibility from the materials used. “We can truly say that some of our coolest and best known pieces are made with Bolidt materials,” says Jonny. “They really give us a new way to create something that we couldn’t have done without that type of material; so for us working with Bolidt has been important in pushing our art to the next step.” Oslo is also home to one of the world’s leading project art companies, ICArt, which has a long track record of supplying art for many leading cruise ship brands. Formed in 1988, when it carried out its first cruise job on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL)’s Sovereign of the Seas, the company now has offices in Oslo, Miami and Madrid, employing 35 people including its installation and production teams. “Our goal is that the client will not need to outsource anything when it comes to their art needs,” says Anne Cecilie Thidemansen, ICArt chief operating officer. “We are their partner from the start to beyond the finish line and can deliver anything from a single wall piece for a hotel reception, to 10,000 individual artworks to be installed onboard the world’s largest cruise ship - and everything in between!” Over the past 30 years ICArt has been involved

70

in more than 270 cruise ship projects, working with RCCL, TUI, Viking, Silverseas, Hapag-Lloyd, Hurtigruten, The World, Celebrity and Azamara Cruises, among others. “We also deliver the assurance that everything is installed according to all safety regulations and technical requirements,” Anne Cecilie points out. “Providing a mesmerizing installation hanging through the atrium across 15 decks is no joke! But these are the kinds of challenges that we thrive on. We love being able to say yes to a seemingly unrealistic idea, as that’s how we grow and learn.” With so many cruise ship projects under her belt, Anne Cecilie struggles to choose a favourite. “They are all so different!” she points out. “But curating the art collections for Viking Cruises, which include original paintings by Edvard Munch, as well as creating the fantastic versatile collections for the RCCL mega-ships, were equally thrilling.” ICArt’s mission is above all to create conversation pieces and trigger interest among passengers, hopefully showing them something they never have seen before in an environment where they have time to enjoy it.

“Providing a mesmerizing installation hanging through the atrium across 15 decks is no joke!

“It’s all about adding to the experience,” says Anne Cecilie. “A cruise is an adventure, a journey, a vacation. It should be enjoyable on as many levels as possible, and this includes the aesthetics surrounding the travellers. “The amount of time a person has to browse art on board a ship over the course of a week or two is very different, and far superior, to the time one spends in a gallery or a museum for instance,” Anne Cecilie observes. “A cruise offers more leisure time than we usually have in our day-to-day-lives, and this allows more time to truly appreciate the art. Maybe we can surprise someone, bring an emotion to the surface, or awaken new interest.” ICArt has also benefited from close collaboration with Bolidt, according to Anne Cecilie, starting with joint work on MeinSchiff 4 for TUI Cruises. “We like to explore materials that are already used onboard and materials that have all marine certificates,” she explains. “By using Bolidt, we can be assured the material in itself is ‘good to go’ from the regulations point of view, so we can focus on the creative part. When we came up with the idea to have an artist paint directly on the floor, Bolidt was our first thought as a supplier. We knew the variety of colour and finishes they have, and that the quality is impeccable. “One of the really cool things about this is that very different, renowned artists and designers have worked with Bolidt for our projects,” adds Anne Cecilie. She picks out an installation by the Polish street-artist 1010 as an “absolutely amazing” example of what can be achieved, citing its illusion of depth. “As a creative company, Bolidt has contributed so much with new ideas and materials that we have had the joy of exploring with the artists.”

Hotspots in Miami

Miami has earned itself a pretty epic reputation over the last century, often referred to as a magic city, it ‘s not hard to see why. There are so many fun things to do in Miami. Beautiful beaches, world-renowned art, yummy food and a strong Latin culture… all washed down with lots of cocktails, naturally.

Miami’s number one attraction

MIAMI IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

Bolidt has been an experienced and reliable partner in the maritime industry for many years. With its own specialists, Bolidt carries out a wide range of projects in a wide variety of fields worldwide. Many of these activities concern international marine projects as well as innovative decking systems in the offshore industry. Industries that are both subject to the highest quality requirements and extreme conditions.

COLOUR IS MAGIC AND IT’S AN ESSENTIAL PART OF EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIVES. WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNERS USE COLOUR, EMOTIONS ARE PINGED AND A STORY UNFOLDS. WHEN IT COMES TO INTERIOR ENVIRONMENTS, COLOUR PLAYS A TREMENDOUS ROLE. ALTHOUGH EVERY PROJECT IS UNIQUE, THERE IS ALWAYS A PERFECT AND APPROPRIATE COLOUR SCHEME FOR EVERY SPACE.
