The committee It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the beautiful Grand Connaught Rooms for the 21st Pink Ribbon Ball 2015 – a night of sparkling entertainment in support of an amazing charity, Breast Cancer Now. It’s hard to believe the Pink Ribbon Ball is now 21 years old! Over the years, this event has gone from strength to strength, and I’m thrilled to tell you that in the last eight years this ball has raised a spectacular £2 million to support life-saving breast cancer research. From myself and all of the Committee, thank you so much for your kindness and support. It’s because of all of you that the Pink Ribbon Ball is such an incredibly special event. Every year, this fantastic evening brings us together around a shared ambition: to stop breast cancer taking the lives of those we love. One in eight women will face the disease in their lifetime, and 1,000 women die from it every month. I know I speak for all of us when I say that we simply must do all we can to stop this. The money we raise tonight will help Breast Cancer Now keep working to reach that landmark moment: the day when no one dies from breast cancer. As Chair, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the committee for their hard work organising another unforgettable evening for us all. Our host for the evening is the lovely Kate Thornton, who helped make last year’s Pink Ribbon Ball such an incredible success and financially a tough act to follow. We have faith we can top it on this special anniversary night and, trust me, Kate will be encouraging you to do just that!

I’d also like to say a special thank you to everyone who’s sponsored elements of the evening’s entertainment and in particular a huge thank you to our primary supporter Asda, who have come on board with us this year to support the evening. Your support will enable our research funds to go so much further and we cannot thank you enough. The Pink Ribbon Ball is well known for its stellar special guests and entertainment and this year is no exception. I’m thrilled to announce that the sensational BASTILLE will be performing for us tonight! So please sit back, relax (but not for too long – dancing is mandatory after all!) and get ready to enjoy a very special evening celebrating our 21st birthday and the advances your support makes possible in the journey to stop breast cancer.

Our patron

A very warm welcome to this year’s Pink Ribbon Ball, now in its 21st year. I am so pleased that you’re able to be here with us for what promises to be a wonderful evening of entertainment and fundraising.

For the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of being Patron for this fabulous event, but I’m so sorry that I am unable to be with you this evening at the 21st anniversary of the Pink Ribbon Ball. Breast cancer is a cause very close to my heart, and it is an honour for me to support Breast Cancer Now and the ground-breaking research the charity funds.

Tonight’s event is particularly special as it’s the first Pink Ribbon Ball in support of Breast Cancer Now. Many of you will be aware that in 2014, Breast Cancer Campaign announced its bold decision to join forces with Breakthrough Breast Cancer. In June 2015, we launched as Breast Cancer Now, the UK’s largest breast cancer charity. We believe that, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live – but only if we all act now. Thanks to our supporters, we’re making incredible progress towards that goal. The money raised at the Pink Ribbon Ball each year supports cutting-edge breast cancer research. Right now, thanks to your generosity, we’re able to support nearly 450 of the brightest researchers across the UK and Ireland. Together, they’re finding new ways to prevent, detect, treat and stop breast cancer in its tracks. And if we keep working, we believe there will be a day when no one will die from this disease again.

Research like the kind Breast Cancer Now makes possible holds the key to a world where no family loses a loved one to breast cancer. But this research needs our support if it’s to keep pace and continue making life-saving breakthroughs. By pledging your support for Breast Cancer Now this evening, you’re helping to make an incredible difference for everyone affected by this dreadful disease – thank you. Every year, the Pink Ribbon Ball goes above and beyond my expectations. Not only is the entertainment first-class, but each time the amount of money we manage to raise has exceeded the target we’ve set ourselves. I hope I can count on you once again to help make sure we raise a record amount for Breast Cancer Now and the vital work they do.

Thank you so much again for your support, and I hope you have a wonderful evening.

Thank you for being here, tonight for the 21st Pink Ribbon Ball. Let’s make it a night to remember.

Baroness Delyth Morgan Chief Executive, Breast Cancer Now

Linda Nolan Patron, Pink Ribbon Ball

Proud supporter

Proudly supported by Asda Tickled Pink It is a real honour, both for me and for Asda Tickled Pink, to support this year’s Pink Ribbon Ball. I know we’ll enjoy an amazing evening, and together I believe we can raise more money than ever to support Breast Cancer Now and their inspirational work to stop breast cancer in its tracks. Asda have raised over £16m for breast cancer research since 2005, when Breast Cancer Campaign joined the Tickled Pink partnership. We are extremely proud of the work that our partnership is making possible, and the difference it’s making for all those affected by breast cancer. It’s a really exciting time for breast cancer research, and we at Asda Tickled Pink are delighted to be working with Breast Cancer Now to help them achieve their bold ambitions. I hope you have a fantastic night. Let’s raise as much as we can to help Breast Cancer Now keep funding life-saving research. Fiona Lambert Tickled Pink Ambassador

Making a donation Our focus for tonight is to raise as much money as possible. We believe that if we all act now, by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live. A way you can contribute is by making a donation. £50 could allow our researchers to freeze 100 cells. Using cryo tubes allows our scientists to freeze down cancer cells for many years. This means that cells can be frozen down for periods where our scientist don’t need them, and then thawed as needed, saving both time and money for our researchers. £100 could enable us to grow 5 cultures of cells. Studying how cancer cells grow and move allows our scientists to pinpoint the details of how tumours grow and spread throughout the body. £250 could enable us to switch off cancer cell genes in 100 experiments. siRNA is highly useful technique that allows scientists to block/inhibit a gene of choice. By “switching” off genes, our scientists can accurately determine which genes drive cancer cell growth. £500 could purchase two antibodies, a key tool in research. These determine whether certain proteins are involved in the development, progression and spread of breast cancer, helping to identify potential drug targets. £1,000 could sequence an entire person’s genome. Knowing the DNA code of a person and whether this person develops breast cancer allows our scientists to understand what genetic markers make people more likely to develop breast cancer. By understanding an individual’s risk of breast cancer, action can be taken to prevent that person from getting breast cancer in the first place thereby saving lives.

£1,500 could fund a scientific officer’s work for two weeks. These scientists are experts in laboratory techniques and equipment such as DNA sequencing and microscopes. Their expertise is crucial to allow our scientists to lead the way in breast cancer research and generate breakthrough discoveries. £5,000 could purchase one incubator essential for growing cells in the lab. Secondary, or metastatic, breast cancer is the form of the disease responsible for nearly all deaths from breast cancer. By growing and experimenting with cells, our scientists can get a detailed understanding of how breast cancer cells move and spread around the body to form new tumours. This will lead to the development of new treatments and ultimately save lives. £10,000 could pay the salary for one scientific staff personnel for two months. The scientific staff are scientists with a profound expertise in breast cancer gained over many years of hands on research experience. They come up with new and innovative ways to understand and treat breast cancer and give expert guidance on our scientific projects. Your support will be helping them to lead the way in how breast cancer is treated, prevented and ultimately eradicated. £15,000 could fund the Microscope facility for four months. The microscopy facility can enlarge cells by up to 400 times and visualise living cancer cells so that we can monitor how cancer cells grow, move around and behave. This is essential for our understanding of the causes of breast cancer so that we can work towards preventing it.

Please speak to one of our lovely volunteers on the night to find out how you can contribute to making a donation.

It’s time to stop beast cancer now

Right now breast cancer is at a tipping point. More women are surviving. But more are being diagnosed than ever before. One in eight women in the UK will face breast cancer in their lifetime. And every 45 minutes, another woman dies from the disease. Together, we can change that. Starting tonight.

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, dedicated to funding research into this devastating disease. Created by the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, their ambition is clear: they’re determined to stop women dying from breast cancer. Thanks to the support of people like you, Breast Cancer Now is already making incredible strides in understanding breast cancer risk and prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. But there’s still much more to be done to stop breast cancer spreading and becoming deadly – the stage of the disease known as secondary breast cancer. This is why we must come together now – as a collective force – to raise vital funds for cutting-edge research. Breast Cancer Now has identified the gaps in research and know what needs to be done to fill them. And if we all act now, by 2050, they believe everyone who develops breast cancer will live.

The Journey to

2050 2050, and the day when breast cancer takes its last life, is within our reach. Now it’s time to work together to make it happen. By...

2025

As a result of increased research, Breast Cancer Now believes 25 per cent fewer people will develop secondary breast cancer.

2025

The charity believes they can reach three quarters of women with their bespoke breast awareness message and increase screening uptake back to its highest ever levels, saving at least 1,500 women’s lives every year.

2025

Breast Cancer Now believes they will be able to prevent up to 15 per cent of breast cancer cases.

2025

The charity believes they will have identified those at increased risk of breast cancer so a further 2,850 women each year will have their disease diagnosed early. And by knowing which breast cancers require treatment and which don’t, Breast Cancer Now aims to eliminate overtreatment, saving over 4,000 women from unnecessary treatment every year.

2030

Breast Cancer Now believes they will have identified what causes different tumours to grow and progress, enabling the best treatment to be selected for every patient.

2030

The charity believes over 50 over per cent of those diagnosed with secondary breast cancer will survive beyond five years.

2050

Breast Cancer Now believes that 30 per cent of breast cancer cases will be prevented – and that all those who do develop breast cancer will live.

Asda Tickled Pink

Asda colleagues, customers and suppliers have raised a staggering £44million to date for Tickled Pink. As one of the benefiting charities, Breast Cancer Now’s work has been transformed by this support. From funding pioneering research throughout the country, to the UK’s first ever Tissue Bank, supporting our policy and campaigning work and raising breast awareness, Asda’s support has changed the breast cancer research landscape and made a real difference to the women, men and families, whose lives are devastated by this disease.
