Identification: 18-22� – Male (shown): Gray-brown with distinctive black tail patch. Female: Brown and buff. Habitat: Ponds, wetlands. Timing: Year-round; slightly more common in winter. Diet: Submerged vegetation, aquatic invertebrates. Note: Sometimes steals food from American Coots and other ducks.
