Welcome
to the Mar Mac Farms New Generation 2nd Female Sale. We are excited to offer you our entire bred heifer genetics from a family program that has been breeding purebred cattle for 6 decades. For those of you who don’t know us we are a family run operation who make our living in agriculture. Our children Brett and Melissa are the 5th generation to be involved on this farm and the agriculture industry. We held our first fall female sale in 2015, and at that time we committed to not having another for 3 years. It is our belief that to maintain the quality in our cowherd and to be able to offer the entire group of bred heifers that the interval between sales had to be 3 years. Our cowherd has to work for us. They run on grass till December, then put onto corn and bale grazing till calving time. They are expected to calve and nurse on their own and get rebred or they are shipped. Our cowherd is culled annually on feet, structure, udders, performance, fertility and disposition. As you look through this catalogue you will see that we believe strongly in cow families and I can say that there are females in this offering that will leave a void in our program. As I said earlier that is why there is a 3 year interval between sales. Our heifers are also bred to proven and calving ease sires; we want the heifers to calve out for the buyers the first year. The bred heifers are very deep bodied correct individuals that will be an asset to any program. The heifer calves on offer are from the top end of our program. All of our 2018 show heifer calves are in this sale and are out of some of our top cow families. Juniors have a look, you may find your next show heifer here with the bonus of her going on to be a foundation cow in your cowherd. The heifer calves in this sale had no creep or grain till they were weaned the second week in September. All of our females are on a full vaccination program which is explained by our veterinarian on page 3 in this catalogue. Welcome to Mar Mac Farms New Generation Female sale. I have had the pleasure of working with the McRae’s for the last several years as their herd health veterinarian. The cattle at Mar Mac Farms are on an extensive herd health program focusing on disease prevention. Newborn calves are vaccinated at 7-10 days of age with Inforce IN(BRSV, IBR, PI3) and Once PMH IN (Mannhemia and Pasturella bacteria) to prevent both viral and bacterial pneumonia in these young calves. Early pneumonia prevention aids in allowing these calves to maximize their growth protential. Cows and replacement heifers are vaccinated with Express 5 FP, a modified live 5 way viral vaccine (BVD I&II, IBR, BRSV AND PI3) prior to breeding to prevent losses from reproductive diseases. Replacement heifers also receive a third booster of Clostridial vaccine prior to breeding as well. At grass turn out the calves receive a second booster dose of Inforce IN and an initial dose of Bovishield BVD One Shot (BVD and Mannhemia) and Ultrabac 7/Somubac (Blackleg and H.somnus protection). In the fall at Mar Mac Farms weaning is done with the low stress quiet weaner method. Nose clips are inserted into the calves to prevent sucking. Calves are returned to pasture with their cows for 5-7 days. At the time of nose clip insertion, fall booster vaccines are administered. They receive Bovishield Gold 5 One Shot (BVD, BRSV, IBR, PI3 and Mannhemia) and an Ultrabac 7/Somubac booster. Calves also received an initial deworming with Safeguard. Pour on Ivermectin products are administered in mid October as a second deworming and for external parasite control. The cows and bred heifers will also receive pour on Ivermectin in mid October. They are also vaccinated with Scour Bos 9 in mid November for scour prevention in the upcoming calf crop. Bred heifers will require a booster dose with Scour Bos 4 in early January to complete the scour prevention program.

You will notice in our catalogue that we have not printed the EPD’s for the Red Angus females. With the decision made by the Canadian Angus Association to change to the new “Angus One program” for their EPD calculations. We feel that they do not correctly reflect the true evaluation of the Red Angus breed. Our main focus is to breed Red Angus cattle with calving ease, performance, ease of fleshing and structural correctness, that will work in the beef industry. We will continue to focus on that.

The lead off female is no coincidence. I remember the day that Blair and I were fencing and Nate Marin called from the Brylor Sale and advised us on some of the females we were interested in. Ended up we bought Red Brylor Bonita 65X and what a legend she has become. This moderate framed, thick made, feminine female is sure an asset to our program. Sons of 65X working in the Klassen and Pedersen herds. Daughter 51B was the high selling female in the 2015 New Generation Sale for $ 24,000 to Dale McKay and 51B has sons working in the Pedersen herd, was successfully flushed and flush sold to Triple L Angus and a May bull calf. Capacity seems to work extremely well with this cow as her first daughter sold ½ interest at Red Roundup for $10,000, this is 104E’s full sister and we then flushed 65X and implanted 5 embryos and got 5 calves. One is in the sale Lot 19 and one of our feature bull calves in 2018 is Red Mar Mac Marshall 21F a full brother. We sold embryos in the Legacy Sale and Nine Mile Ranch purchased the 65X x Capacity eggs. Bonita was purchased from our good friends and long time Red Angus enthusiasts, Bryan and Sherry MacKenzie at Brylor Ranch and every time Bryan comes out he has been impressed with the job this 65X female is doing, just ask him.

The Ruby cow family is another one of the foundation families. Ruby 10T has been a very functional, moderate framed female who never missed. 10T’s daughters were right at the top at the 2015 New Generation Female sale selling to Blair’s. Ag, Wraz Red Angus and Fraser Farms. Her daughter 24Y is a Ribeye female who is like her mother never misses. 24Y was Heifer Calf Champion the last time the National Angus show was in Brandon and progeny working at T Bar K, Guild Farms, Rooke Farms and 6E’s half brother is an exciting March son of our Ripzone bull. Black Angus In 1950, the Winnipeg Flood caused the Angus herd developed by the University of Manitoba and their “Managra” prefix to be moved to the W.F. McRae Farm. These Angus cattle were then sold to W.F. McRae to form the foundation herd. In 1955, W.F. McRae of Hayfield became a member of the Canadian Angus Association with his sons, Howard and Allan. The McRae family hosted the Manitoba Angus field day in 1955 at their farm, drawing 650 people. When Allan McRae married in May 1956, he and Howard divided the cowherd. This was the formation of Mar Mac Farms.
Throughout the 70’s, the McRae’s won many championship pens of 5 Black Angus steers along with carcass championships with Angus steers. The highlight was in 1976 when their Champion Angus Carcass sold for $7.00 per lb. In 1979, Mar Mac Farms sold their mature cowherd to Brookmore Angus, Brookdale. Allan’s eldest son “Blair” kept the heifer calf crop and continued to develop his Angus herd. In the late 70’s, Blair served as a director on the Manitoba Angus Board. In 1983, Blair married Lois (Gordon) of Souris and they developed their Black Angus program from Blair’s Angus and a group of females Lois had brought from Kinnaber Cattle Co.

In 1987, McRae’s Brittany 74 U was raised at Mar Mac and Grand Champion Female at Ag Ex in Brandon. At Agribition that year, we were made an offer for a good price to sell Brittany. As young beef producers just getting started we wanted to build out herd around this bloodline. In 2017, we have 7 generations of Brittany and Bridget females in our Black Program and two currently our donor females: McRae’s Bridget 125T and McRae’s Brandi 9T. One big highlight was in 1990 as we raised the Grand Champion Black Angus Female at Ag Ex and she went on to be Reserve Grand Champion Angus Female at Canadian Western Agribition. She sold in the Agribition Sale for $9750 to Randy Remington. Her first calf was a bull called Black Reign who went on to be the 1991 First Black Sweepstakes winner in Edmonton.

Black Angus bulls have been a major part of our bull sale and have gone on and worked in many herds, like Mar Mac Tiger 159Y sold for $9500 to Ger-Lei Angus, SK in 2012 (he is the sire of the Tiger 170A who most of our females are out of) and Blair’s.Ag purchased Mar Mac Blueprint 56B for $21,000. Just ask Kevin Blair what he thinks of the Blueprint females. Blueprint’s other brothers are working in the Kembar Angus herd and the McPhail herd. We have exported Black Angus cattle to United States and Davis Rairdan have exported Angus embryos around the world for Mar Mac Farms . This is the first time we have offered this large of group of Black Angus females as we have been building our numbers. These females are functional and will work in the purebred or commercial industry. Brett expanded his Angus herd in 2013 with a select group of Black Angus Females from Fertile Valley Angus. In 2016, Brett acquired the use of 50 Black Angus Females from the Sandy Bar Herd to expand his Black Angus numbers. Brett operates under McRae Land and Livestock, and has a good selection of bred heifers in the sale.

Simmental In 1976, Mar Mac Farms started in the Simmental business by purchasing a package of females from Bar 5 Simmental which were the foundation of our herd. We were extremely impressed with the performance and mothering ability that we then decided to pursue a cowherd of Simmental females.
We have marketed our cattle through the Keystone Simmental Association since 1979 and Lois and Blair managed the Keystone Simmental Sale from 1990-2016.

We have built our program around cow families like Carli 14N, 765N, Macho Girl, Nike, Prissy, Patty and Deb. We specialize in performance, easy fleshing and marketable Red and Black Simmental cattle. We want them to go out and work in the commercial and purebred industry. We host our annual bull sale on the farm on March 6, 2019 and our female sale is held every three years in December. The McRae’s have been involved in the Simmental breed organizations both provincially and nationally. Blair is the current 1st Vice President of the Canadian Simmental Association. Our children grew up in the Young Canadian Simmental program and Blair was one of the founding directors of the Canadian Young Simmentals. In 2018, Mar Mac Farms celebrates 42 years in the Simmental breed .

Swan 22F Homo test was inconclusive. This is our 2018 Simmental show heifer and look at the length of body in this female. Length weighs and you can tell by her weaning weight. The Johnny Cash’s calves have an excellent disposition and Swan 22F is no exception. We purchased her dam from Greg Goudy and she brings in a heavy weight calf each year. purchased Mar Mac Gypsy Soul 126C has been a standout female for our operation since she arrived as a heifer. She has an excellent disposition, great udder and is extremely maternal. 126C has given us two tremendous bull calves, her first calf being our newest herd sire. She’s an extremely long bodied female and it is her combination of power and being so smooth made that not only turns heads in the pasture, but the show ring as well.

Piece of Mind - Livestock insurance will be available sale day from Keystone Livestock Services. Accidents - Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of the buyers, neither the sale staff, auctioneer or Mar Mac assume any responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of an accident or loss of property. Terms - The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable in Canadian Funds. The right of the property shall not pass until after settlement is made. The settlements must be made with the clerks before the cattle are released. Breeders Guarantee - Cows represented as being pregnancy tested safe in calf have been examined and declared safe by a licensed veterinarian and will be accompanied by a vet certificate to this effect. They are considered breeders without further guarantee. For heifers under 12 months of age and purchased as single lots and who fail to conceive to the service of a bull known to be a breeder, the matter must be reported in writing to the seller before the heifer reaches 18 months of age. The seller shall have 6 additional months in which to prove that the said female is a breeder and may use any registered bull of the breed available to him. Any female returned will be at the purchaser’s risk. No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver live calves or that she will carry calves full term or that the calf carried will not be mummified. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodied after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. At no time shall the liability exceed the sale price.
