Lockhart Valley 14th Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome Cattlemen and women . . . . .

Hello and welcome to our 14th Annual Bull Sale. Wow, its been 30 years since we joined the Canadian Simmental Association. We went into this adventure with the idea to try and raise functional, maternal oriented cattle with style and performance. Of course a cattleman’s cow herd never stays the same as it’s always evolving and will forever evolve as long as the cattleman stays in the business. We’ve met alot of people along the way and some of them have become good friends and if there’s anything we hold dear, it is the relationships we’ve developed along the way and for that we are grateful.

Lee & Tina Robson P: 403.748.2054 Lee Cell: 403.357.4280 Guest Consignor Jenna Olson Silvertop Simmentals

This past year Darryl Williams of Beaverhead Ranches informed us that he is retiring. We want to wish Darryl and Sharon all the best in his retirement (I know Sharon still works). 2018 has certainly proven to be an extraordinarily tough year. It seemed we had a winter that never ended, then a hot, smoky summer, right into a nail biting six weeks of winter. We really didn’t think we’d get our crop off, let alone our winters feed out in the corn field.

We’re really high on this sales bull offering. We have an excellent pen of fullblood bulls. LHVS Charles 29C is well represented with a couple of breeder bull prospects, one of whom is polled. Also represented is Crossroad Radium, a bull we had great success using on our heifer pen. The black and red pen is a solid set of commercial bulls.. LHVS Smokewagon 1F is a powerful red bull who could have an impact on a breeders red program. We feed our bulls a TMR mix of corn silage, cereal silage and 14 lbs of Wetaskiwin bull pellets. The bulls have been split into two pens that are large with plenty of room to exercise in.

Lee, Hannah and I are extremely proud of the bulls we have on offer and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or better yet, stop in for a coffee and a visit. Lockhart Valley wishes to invite you to the farm on March 2, 2019 for our 14th Annual Bull Sale. Please come early to view the bulls and have a catered meal on us.

Thank-you, Lee, Tina, and Hannah Robson

LHVS CHARLES 29C

15-Jan-15

HORNED FULLBLOOD

In 2019 we will have the third calf crop from Charles arrive at the farm. Charles has met every expectation we’ve had about him. His calving ease, style, performance, confirmation and temperament are all attributes he passes along to his offspring. His first daughters are calving this spring and they are proving to be powerful females. They’re wide through their hips and deep bodied with excellent udders. Charles’s first sons sold at our sale last year and they were very well received. Our top three Charles sons went to well respected cattlemen. LHVS MANCRUSH 57E went to SAJ Simmentals and Roach Ranch at Edam, SK. LHVS ZEKE 31E went to Sever Farms, Rocky Mountain House, AB and LHVS MR OPPORTUNITY 29E went to Leedale Farms, Rimbey, AB. We have five Charles sons on offer, two of whom we feel will make breeder bulls. The remaining three are top notch commercial bulls who will add calving ease, performance and style.

HORNED FULL FLECKVIEH FULLBLOOD

Full Fleckvieh. Rooster is our resident pest as he’s always up for a scratch. First Charles son on offer in the sale and he’s darn good. Dark cherry red with big goggles. Rooster has his sires great hair coat, big foot, large testicles and super quiet disposition. Roosters dam came to us in dam from Marronda’s at Lomond, AB. At last years sale a Charles son from LHVS 110T’s daughter LHVS 79X Man Crush 57E, went to SAJ Simmentals and Roach Ranch at Edam, SK. 110T is a small framed cow with a near perfect udder and feet. Serious breeders take a look. There’s style and performance in Rooster. We’d use Rooster ourselves but we have Man Crush in the tank and have used him in our program. December 18, 2018 weight 1340 lbs. Cow Bull.

LHVS FONZIE 54F

18/1/2018

POLLED FULLBLOOD

I named LHVS 54F Fonzie because he’s a cool bull and you can’t help but say “ayyyyy” when you see him. All kidding aside for a smooth polled calf with a little chrome on his shoulder, Fonzie has excellent performance. On December 18, 2018 he weighed 1270 lbs, thats a 3.8 lb per day gain since weaning. So many polled fullbloods lack performance but I’d say Fonzie will have you covered in that department. Fonzie’s dam is a LHVS Commander 59X cow. Commander is a bull we sold Semex in 2011. We tried Commander on a few cows and LHVS 93A has risen to be a top polled cow in our herd. We’ve registered every calf out of her. OK breeders take a serious look here, no fooling around. Fonzie is a smooth made, high performing polled calf from Charles 29C, what more could you ask for. December, 18, 2018 weight: 1270 lbs. Cow Bull.

I really like Shockwave, another good Charles son. Shockwave’s full sister is a powerful heifer. If 72F continues to develop like his sister, his new owners shouldn’t be disappointed. Dark red with wrap-around goggles, large feet and huge testicles. Shockwave’s dam 70X is our best R-Five Maltese cow. We’ve registered a possible 4 out of 6 calves. Our Secret Affair 42C females that we have calving this spring are great females. He seems to throw beautiful udders, feet and mothering ability onto them. We have five sons on offer. The one standout calf is LHVS Smokewagon 1F. He’s long, deep, has a huge quarter on him and one of the best set of feet I’ve seen on a bull in a long time. No bulls feet are ever perfect but Smokewagon’s are. The other four are great commercial bull prospects.

POLLED PUREBRED

“Smokewagon”, I got 1F’s name from the 1993 Kurt Russell movie Tombstone, Smokewagon is an old western slang for a six-gun. The name seemed to fit 1F like a glove. This LHVS 42C son is a chunk of a bull. He has great performance, from weaning (September 9, 2018) to (December 18, 2018), he gained an impressive 4.89 lb/ day. This is why he’s penned with the fullbloods. He stands squarely on large red hooves. 1F is thick down his back, with his rump running deep down the back of his hind legs. His dam is a 10 year old red blazed face “blue” daughter from who, we’ve registered 6 calves. December 18, 2018 weight 1410 lbs. Cow Bull.

Festus is another good Crossroad Radium bull calf. His dam LHVS 74D is an excellent Double Bar D United 176A first calver. United is a bull we purchased a semen package on in the spring of 2015. Festus will grow up to be a moderate framed bull who will calve easy, leave behind excellent females and add the all important pounds to your steers weight in the fall. December 18, 2018 weight: 1010 lbs. Heifer Bull.

The only Red Titan calf in the sale. Dreamcatchers dam is a PRL 42W daughter. We used him on our heifers and cows for a few years. LHVS 73Z comes from a Bar 5 SA Evan 440L fullblood cow LHVS 46P, who we finally retired this past fall. I’d say at 14 years of age, she didn’t owe us a penny. Back to his dam, she has a beautiful udder and good feet under her. Dreamcatcher should calve like a “dream” and I’m sure he will improve udders and feet. December 18, 2018 weight: 1300 lbs. Lawman is Lee’s favorite in the purebred pen. His dam is LHVS 15D, a Springcreek Liner 56U cow out of our productive 9W and 100S cow family. LHVS 85F is a solid black bull. Born at the end of January, from weaning until January 18, 2018, Lawman gained 3.8 lbs per day. Pretty good for a black bull. Good hair coat coming out of “the Dink”, hard black hooves and an easy going disposition. Although Lawman has pretty good EPD’s when it comes to calving ease, we recommend he be used on cows. 100% Full Fleckvieh. Here’s the first Metro son we have for your appraisal. We are really high on this bulls dam. LHVS 22C is a Southseven Mr Adonis 96Z (Stuey) daughter. She’s dark red with a beautiful udder and feet. LHVS 22C is moderate framed but as your can tel by Rhapsody she’s got it where it counts. We really had to debate and think really hard about selling or keeping him for ourselves. But with so many Stuey related daughters we decided to sell him. We feel that Rhapsody is a potential breeders bull. He has great calving ease and is bang-on for his performance numbers. He has an exceptional milk EPD, Rhapsody could help the Fleckvieh Fullblood division in the Simmental world, with his style, color pattern, performance, breeding potential, his sire, but last and least of all his dam. LHVS 91X has given us an Anchor “T” Metro 4E son for your evaluation. With Vortex’s pedigree you can expect him to leave you some tremendous females. We used Metro with the hopes of getting females, instead he gave us all bulls. Some made the bull pen and some didn’t. Vortex has tremendous length and middle, of course Metro calves are generally a little narrower and Vortex is no exception. Expect calving ease (because of his lineage). Jayhawk is the youngest bull in our sale this year, born on February 18, he’s done very well for himself. LHVS 106F’s dam had a very hard time in her last year as she ended up with “lumpy jaw” and had to go last fall. Jayhawk has the widest, fluffiest ears. He’s solid black, with hard black hooves. In the spring of 2017 we dug into the semen tank and tried 2 straws of Har-Wei-Leo on a couple of non-registered cows we have. The Leo semen came to us via Jason Bruketta. We finally decided to give Leo a try and he did not disappoint. We got this bull calf and a heifer (whom we sold as a commercial). The bull calf LHVS 65F, is the spitting image of his sire. He’s chunky for sure, with a lot of bone in him and because of this we recommend him for cows. Leo has an easy going disposition and all the equipment to make your cows happy. Black Caviar is a chunky, black blazed faced bull with all the muscle and power of a Fullblood bull. This bulls dam has a beautiful udder and large no fault feet. LHVS 93B puts everything into her calves, Black Caviar was a pasture favorite in the black division this past summer with visitors who toured the bull pen. This young powerhouse is only registered as a 3/4 blood, but your cows won’t care, especially when they proudly show you their heavy weight steers and fancy replacement females in the fall. Due to some technical difficulties LHVS Butler 115F did not get registered. A bull doesn’t need papers to breed and LHVS 115F will get the job done. Butler is a moderate framed, thick IPU Galaxy 97S grandson. He is one of the last born calves with a birthdate of February 28, 2018. He weaned off at 650 lbs and had a December 15, 2018 weight of 1100 lbs. A bonus is Butler is polled. He also has calving ease built in with LHVS Bellringer 21T and ER Big Sky 545B in his pedigree. During the 2018 calving season my purebred herd decided to give me heifers, and my commercial herd decided to give me bulls. So, this year I am consigning 3 bulls coming out of my commercial fullbood cows, and one bull out of a purebred black cow. I am very excited about this group of bulls, as they are absolutely packed with performance and style! Just like in the past, my bulls have been fed and housed with Lockhart’s bulls, from the day they are weaned until sale day. They are on a full herd health program, and are fed a ration of corn silage, bull pellets and oats. This is my 6th year selling bulls and I am confident they will work for just about any kind of program.

Pedigree, pedigree, pedigree. Take a close look at the sire of this bull. None other than WFL Absolute 51Y, who ranks in the top 4% for CE and top 3% for birthweight. Absolute has sired many high selling progeny including $35,000 and $25,000 daughters at Friday Night Lights and a son at R Plus that demanded $55,000. Freddy is a structurally sound, low birthweight bull. This guy has a nicely set head and neck which follow down a wide top, ending in a very well-muscled hind end. With a stylish blaze face, I believe this low birthweight bull will be a very unique breeding piece for any herd. Homozygous Polled

With a weaning weight of over 1000lbs, needless to say this bull is an absolute tank. Finn has one of the thickest hair coats I have seen on a bull in a long time. Along with great hair, he has unreal length and rib shape. Finn has a perfect white blaze that adds style along with his power. This is the very last set of bulls coming off of my previous herd sire “Dale”. Dale has raised proven heifers, bulls and steers, and this bull should follow along in his Dads’ footsteps very nicely. Finn is the perfect mix of purebred and fullblood genetics. If you’re looking to add pounds to your weaning weights, this guy is for you!

Flint is a quiet, honest bull. His dam is a daughter out of my “16” cow whom also has a bull selling in this year’s sale. The maternal genetics are strong within these bulls and should pass down to make wonderful heifer calves. Flint has longevity built into him, with a set of solid black feet that should last for a very long time. With a small attractive head, great length and testicle development, this guy would work wonders on a commercial herd!

AKA “Dale”, I purchased this guy as the high seller from the Pheasantdale Cattle Co Bull and Female sale in 2015. Dale is a very thick made bull with lots of depth and muscling. He is 7 generations polled, 4 generations black and 3 generations of blaze face dams. I could not be any happier with the calves this guy has raised, as they all have lots of eye appeal, great temperaments and unreal feet. Unfortunately, with my small herd, I have to many of his females retained, so I had to sell Dale last spring. This will be the last offering off bulls I will ever have off of him.

Balanced and impressive, are terms that come to mind when Iooking at this bull. His dam is a dark cherry red, fullblood cow that produced my high selling bull at last year’s sale. Not only did this cow produce a good bull last year, but for the past four years she has produced fantastic bulls, that are always near the top of the pen for weaning weights. This bull is smooth across the top, carries his depth very nicely and has an unreal hair coat. If you are a commercial cattleman looking to add power to your herd, I would recommend taking a hard look at this guy on sale day.
