Book review

Bohemia boasts a large and secret walled garden, but it’s sadly overgrown and neglected. A local organisation is trying to save it. (p 1 & 4). St Peter’s Church suffered a double dose of misery recently, with flytipping and the theft of its minibus (p 5). The second of our articles about Bohemia, New York comes from Diane Haberstroh, who works there (p 11). Lashings XI are back in Bohemia on Thur Aug 7 (p 1). Hastings Locksmiths have finally moved away – blaming lack of parking for customers (p 9). Horntye Park says goodbye to its collection of cricketing memorabilia - it went to auction on July 19th (p 9). Leah, our website manager, is not well. Our best wishes for a quick recovery, Leah. Notable Sussex Women by Helena Wojtczak Reviewed by Bronwyn Pryde. The author claims that this book exists to commemorate the lives of 580 individuals whose names have never before appeared together in one place. The criterion for inclusion is that each woman included either was born, died or lived for more than two years in Sussex. Ninety five percent of the women featured were born into the middle and upper classes between the turn of the 18th century and the first decades of the 20th century and consist mainly of artists, sportswomen, philanthropists, social workers, reformers, pioneers and professionals. Some of the more famous names include Virginia Woolf, Fanny Cradock and Linda McCartney. The book is clearly a labour of love as it is packed with biographical information and is produced to a high standard. It is certainly not meant to be read from cover to cover but to be dipped into, much like an encyclopedia. At £20 it is not cheap but it does reflect the amount of work that has gone into it.

Walled garden (from page 1) and other offices. Since then the walled garden has been allowed to deteriorate. The Association says, “Many of us would like to see the regeneration of the walled garden within Summerfields Woods. It still stands as a testament to the wisdom of the Victorian horticulturalists. Their expertise enabled fresh fruit and vegetables to be supplied to the nearby kitchens, thus offering a local, reliable source of food. “What they did is of great interest to us now. We are currently struggling with many food related problems. As the newspapers and television programmes inform us, we are seeing many health problems arising from improper eating habits. We are encouraged to eat less processed food and increase our intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. As a result, many people are taking up the challenge of growing their own fresh food”. “We would welcome the opportunity to help develop the walled garden, so it can again be a centre of horticultural activity. For years, many people have walked past it, wondering why it is not in use. The local community

The Bohemia Walled Garden Association Interest in the walled garden is snowballing. Local residents and other interested parties have recently formed the Bohemia Walled Garden Association, whose main aim is “to see this valuable local site restored and brought into active use”, (see letters page). The association’s priorities are to obtain permission from its current owners, (Hastings Borough Council’s estates department), to use the land ,and to obtain funding to restore the walled garden and implement a community-based horticultural project. A petition is being circulated at several locations in Bohemia & Silverhill.

Gardeners’ Questions

by Dave Kent

Dave – My partner says I still smell after an hour in the bath. Can you advise me? Anita Harris (Mr) Dave writes: You make no mention of water, so it may be that you have been taking dry or "phantom" baths, a common practice among those who have suffered a brain haemorrhage. Perhaps you have been using the same bathful of water for some time because your supply is metered. I haven't had a bath since I had one fitted, but then I don't have a partner to give me unsolicited negative feedback concerning my personal odour. Otherwise, conduct a thorough search of your partner's nostrils as there could be something malodorous stuck up there . [Questions to ‘The Voice’: address p 3]

Bohemianism? Though a Bohemian is a native of the Czech province of Bohemia, a secondary meaning emerged in 19th century France. The term was used to describe artists, writers and disenchanted people of all sorts who wished to live non-traditonal lifestyles.

St Peter’s minibus stolen In Short A shocked and upset Father Alex Brown of St P e t e r ’ s church has reported the theft of their minibus. The beloved minibus – stolen W h a t ’ s worse is that it appears it has been so badly damaged that it will be written off by the insurance company, leaving the church without transport. The 14-year old Leyland Daf 17-seater blue-green minibus was ‘in mint condition’ according to David, who donated the vehicle to the church. ‘The steering-wheel has been pulled off, the driver’s seat has disappeared and some of the electrics have been ripped out’, he said. Father Brown said ‘It was stolen late Friday 11July or early Sat 12 July from outside the vicarage in Blomfield Road. The police discovered it a few hours later, seriously damaged; they have impounded it for forensic tests. This is a huge shock and blow to the church. The minibus was crucial to pick up elderly people and young people living outside the Bohemia area’. He went on ‘We’re all in a state of shock and unbelief how such a needed vehicle doing such good work could be targeted and damaged’. n The Voice has also been alerted that flytipping has recently become a serious problem at the church. Lorraine Watkins, churchwarden at St Peter’s, says ‘We’re doing our best to improve the look of the grounds. The lawns are mowed every fortnight and a company clears the gardens. This is not a quick or cheap job and it will take time to show improvements. The fact that some people think our church grounds are a place to dump rubbish astonishes me. We are a large church but sadly only a small (but growing!) congegration, and we can’t keep on top of things. The church and its grounds beong to all of us. It would be nice to receive some help from the community’.

THE OLD BAKERY – this London Road shop has been open for some weeks now, selling secondhand books, clothes, records, videos, dvds, magazines and general bric-a-brac. A house clearing service is advertised. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm, Thurs, Friday and Saturday. The Old Bakery, 130, London Road. LOAN SHARKS – Bohemia-based local MP Michael Foster gives his backing to ESCC’s loan shark one stop shop initiative. ‘Loan sharks are those who prey on the immediate needs of, often poor, people and then threaten them should they not repay. It doesn’t have to be like that – loans from unregistered lenders are not legally enforceable’. Anyone who is worried about this kind of debt should call the dedicated 24/7 number: 0300 555 2222. RICHARD SMART – our local accountancy expert is back in Uganda, ‘seeing what he can do to help the poor’. He’s not expected back until September. DEPUTY MAYOR – is not Vivienne Bond (as stated in our last issue). It’s LibDem councillor Peter Armstrong (pictured right). What were we thinking? He’s nothing like Vivienne Bond. Vivienne is still our local Lib Dem representative. CAR STICKERS – white vinyl ‘Bohemia’ stickers with peel-off back, available from the Voice office at 79, Bohemia Road, price £1 each.

A Brief History of Bohemia

– by local historian Edward Preston

Part 6 - Tower Buildings he Tower Buildings complex was obtained by Mr Edward Burchatt Wingfield – an entrepreneur of his time – running a furniture removal business, building properties and much more. He used the building as a furniture repository. In 1877, he added a tower to the warehouse, with the intention of providing four clock faces to serve the locality, but they never materialised. Why? In 1883/4 he built what is now called Marina Park at West St Leonards, to provide an hotel for that part of town. However, having apparently over-reached himself, he suffered a brainstorm and committed suicide. Rumour had it that he had thrown himself off the Bohemia tower, but the fact is that he was at the Marina Park building where on 25th February, 1885, he cut his throat and jumped from a first floor bedroom window – the sad end of a man who had tried to help the town develop. The tower in Bohemia was an interesting addition to the skyline, but was removed in 1974, as it was deemed unsafe. The refurbished building is today occupied by the East Sussex County Council Education department.

The gem of the collection, estimated at £1,500-2,500, is a large, original, sepia photograph of the Australian team who toured England in 1924, signed by all sixteen players and the manager, Sydney Smith.

The sale of this large and important collection has aroused controversy amongst local cricket enthusiasts, but cash-strapped Horntye Park say it is very necessary.

Hastings Locksmiths: “Parking was killing us” Escalating parking problems in Bohemia Road have driven old-established business Hastings Locksmiths away from the area. The firm’s last day of trading at their old premises, 59 Bohemia Road, was on Friday 27th June. The next day they moved to Unit 3, Haywood Way, Ivyhouse Lane, and were open for business on the Monday June 30th.

“We’ve now got a huge workshop where we can do a lot more on the workshop side of locksmithing. Going to our new premises has completely modernised the way we do things. We now do a vast range of door handles and have expanded our range of fire equipment, fire exits etc.”

St. Paul’s Church of England Primary School will be holding a Year 6 School Leavers’ Service in St. Peter’s Church on Tuesday 22nd July at 10 30am. At St. Peter’s we are proposing to have a course for those who think they might want to be baptized and confirmed in their faith, learn more about God, Christ and Christianity and what it means to belong to a church community. If you, as members of the local community, are interested in this please contact Fr. Alex. We also need young people to train to serve at the altar on Sunday mornings. We have received complaints about the church grounds. These are being dealt with, but thank you for your concerns who contacted us about this. It is good to know that people in the community do care. The contractors are very busy at this time of year and they can only attend when the weather permits and they have no other commitments. The intention is to take out all weeds and lay a cover over the weeded area around the shrubs and wood-chip the front area garden. This will lead to easier garden management. God Bless; and Thank You! Have a good holiday! Fr Alex

Silver, gold and copper Bohemia, New York

Silver, enamels & gold leaf.

Recycled copper & enamel.

Local silversmith and enameller Paula Thittichai will be opening her studio in Upper Park Road to the public as part of this year’s Coastal Currents Arts Festival. Paula, who has been making jewellery for 25 years, said “I went into jewellery because there wasn’t anything I wanted to wear myself!” Paula started making costume jewellery as a business, then designed, manufactured, wholesaled and retailed it. She has also made and designed clothes and handbags, and sold them to shops. In 2000 she completed a craft course at Hastings College covering ceramics, metalwork, textiles and glass. She produces two collections a year, one for spring and summer and the other for autumn and winter. Designs are Paula Thittichai usually influenced by what is happening in the fashion world. Her jewellery is contemporary, but imbued with her own distinctive personal touch. She says, “Many of my past collections have been inspired by the sea. I use the shapes and forms of shells. It is so interesting to compare shells from Hastings beach, which are heavy and opaque, with the tropical ones of Thailand, which are delicate, with beautiful lustres and patterns. People always say my stuff is really different. It’s really quite raw; perfection gives me the idea of being manufactured, so I like to keep that rawness. No two pieces are ever the same.” She also recycles copper hot-water tanks, cutting them down into manageable sizes and making jewellery and enamelled pictures out of it. She sells her creations at Made in Hastings (at 82 High Street). Her studio at 3 Upper Park Road will be open Sept 6th – 7th and 13th – 14th from 12 noon to 6pm. Paula says, “A warm welcome awaits you, so come and view an eclectic mix of my work; recycled textiles and copper, silk paintings, ceramics, glass, and most importantly my new autumn/winter collection of silver and enamel jewellery.”

The first Bohemian settlers (writes Diane Haberstroh) arrived in the area in the 1850's. The town was originally known as "South of Lakeland Farms" and later named "New Village of Tabor." (Tabor means camp, perBohemia, NY, established 1855 haps reflecting the fact that the very first of the Bohemians were employed or owned businesses in the surrounding towns of Sayville and Oakdale). In 1894 the name officially became Bohemia, reflecting the homeland of the Czechspeaking inhabitants. The name has remained, although there have been several attempts to change it. In the 1920's there was a failed attempt by a few to change the name to Sayville Heights (Sayville is a nearby town). After World War II, it was proposed that the town name be changed to "Lidice" after a town in Czechoslovakia where many residents were executed by the German Army. Then again in the late 1940's the name MacArthur (after General MacArthur) was proposed and the postal employees conducted a door to door poll and it was determined that residents wanted their town to remain known as Bohemia.

Diane Haberstroh Diane has worked at the public library in Bohemia, New York for twelve years and lives in nearby Oakdale. When the ‘Voice’ asked her library for information it was Diane who volunteered to help. She has taken lots of photographs and given us plenty of information. She says “ I like the area mainly because it is a nice place for families. There are lots of activities for children. It is also close enough, about an hour and a half train ride, to Manhattan if you want to get away from the suburban lifestyle for the day”. Life isn’t perfect, however: “One of the negative aspects of the area that I am currently dealing with is raccoons. Some mornings I discover that my garbage bin has been knocked over and garbage is scattered around the yard. My dog welcomes the raccoon visits since he enjoys the garbage they leave behind. To keep the raccoons out, I have to remember every night to tie the bin to a fence with a cinder block on top of the cover”. The ‘Voice’ is lucky indeed to have Diane’s help. We’ll be featuring one of her articles each month.

Puzzle 61 answer. Last month’s picture shows an example of the first commercial televsion receiving sets produced by the Baird Company in 1930. It is on permanent exhibition at our local Museum in Bohemia Road. This month’s winner – and only entrant with the correct answer is Mr Hughes of Newgate Road who has been sent a £10 Empress Art gift voucher. Well done Brian! John Logie Baird (1888-1946), a Scotsman, was the first person in the world to demonstrate a working television system, in January 1926. This was a system using mechanical picture scanning, with electronic amplification at the transmitter and at the receiver. It could be sent over ordinary telephone lines and by radio, leading to an historic transmission of television from London to New York in February 1928. Baird’s work in our town enables Hastings to claim to be ‘The Birthplace of Television’.

Dear Sir, I wonder if there is anyone who can help me. I was born at 132 Bohemia Road during the early days of WW2, before moving to Salisbury Road in 1946. I have always understood that 132 Bohemia Road was originally an “Ale House” and indeed it had a cellar. I suspect it was called The Sun though I could be wrong. Is there anyone who could tell me the past history of the building, including: when was it built; what was its name when functioning as an Ale House; when was it operating; who was the licensee? I also suspect that the street numbering changed at some point - any clues as to what number it was before being known as number 132 would be helpful. Cyril Pelluet. A few enquiries of local residents have produced no relevant recollections. ‘I’m sure it was never a pub, and I’ve lived here 30 years’ said a local woman – ed.

Village Green? Dear Sir, I wonder if it’s possible to register the piece of land used by the Bohemia Village Fayre as a village green? It might put paid to any building plans. It has been used by dogwalkers, and the fire brigade’s fete for over 20 years has it not? I haven’t got the time but I thought you might know someone who has some time to throw at it. It might also be worthwhile trying to protect the Oval as well. There are no plans as far as I know for building on the Oval, but there are plans for the swimming pool and so the old site could be sold off and the Village Fayre piece of land with it, and then it’s a brownfield site and then it’s houses with no trouble at all. See: http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/community/townsvillages/villagegreens/default.htm The world’s first commercially produced televsion – which can be seen in our very own local museum in Bohemia Road

Kat Lee-Ryan, organiser, Bohemia Village Fayre. The ESCC website gives the following information about village greens: if your community has an area that you use for sporting activities, or other pastimes, then registering it as a village green may ensure it stays that way. A village green is legally defined as an area where people in the community have enjoyed legitimate sports or pastimes for at least twenty years. ‘Legitimate sports or pastimes’ include things like: cricket matches, blackberry picking, dog walking, village fetes. To register a new village green you must prove that: the land is mainly used by local residents (rather than, say, day trippers) and that it has been used for at least twenty years. If you

wish to register land as a village green, please first visit the DEFRA website: where you will find guidance notes and an application form.. You also will need to supply: a map showing the boundaries of the proposed village green, evidence forms or letters of support from residents saying when and how they use this land, a map outlining the area that local users of the land come from and a completed statutory declaration (included in the form), witnessed by a solicitor or magistrate. Once your application is received, it is publicised and a period for people to comment on the application is opened. It may be necessary for a planning inspector to hold a hearing to decide about your application. The inspector will then recommend whether or not the land should be registered as a village green. An elected councillor with special responsibility for these applications has the final say about whether or not village green status is granted. The planning inspector’s report is sent to this councillor who then writes to all parties concerned to confirm the final decision. Any takers? – ed.

Robert Gear Dear Sir, I was looking at the genealogy of my family (Court) and was following up a Court/Bennett family in the Lewes area and found the following information about the estate of Robert Gear in Brighton, Hastings, Lewes and London, 1639-1920. It seems that the available documents include an abstract of title of an estate at Bohemia in Hastings purchased by Gear (then of Cuckfield) in 1825. When looking to see if Bohemia, Hastings was extant I came across your email address. More out of curiosity than anything, but do you know of the location of Mr Robert Gear’s estate in Bohemia, Hastings? John Court, Court Genealogy, USA. We asked our local historian, Edward Preston, if he knew of Robert Gear. He says ‘Sorry, no Gear, but there was a Robert Geary, a butcher who had land/property in St Mary Magdalen parish’. Hope that helps? – ed.

Bohemia, NY Bohemia Walled Garden Association Dear Sir, I was interested to read the letter in the July issue concerning the walled garden in Summerfields Wood. This is yet another person who feels that this once-prized horticultural site should not be left neglected and unused. The walled garden could easily be restored and become a valuable amenity to the local community. With television and newspapers encouraging us to get active, eat healthy food, grow-your-own, and cut down on food-miles, we should be using this land for growing fruit and vegetables. Demonstration gardens are a possibility; school participation could be encouraged; links with horticultural courses could be made; interest in local history could be stimulated, in partnership with the Hastings Museum. Most importantly, the walled garden should be used for the activity of growing plants. This is what it was designed for and for which it is best suited, sitting in a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. Several like-minded people have formed a group called the ‘Bohemia Walled Garden Association’, whose aim is to see this valuable local site restored and brought into active use. Anyone who would like to know more, please contact me. Susan Thomson, BWGA@dynamicaudio.co.uk [see also the article on the association, pages 1 & 4].

Eclipse Hair Salon Dear Sir, I would like to thank you and the people of Bohemia for the support you have given us with our new hair salon. So many people have been asking when we will be open and much as we would like to be open now, we want to get everything in place just right. We hope to be opening the doors soon and that you’ll all come and meet us, have a cup of tea and a chat to see what we can offer. I’d also like to thank my Dad who has been working hard to get the shop up and running. Rachael Martin, Eclipse Hair Salon, Bohemia Road.

Dear Sir, I am sending you a copy of A History of Bohemia Long Island which our local historian has dropped in for you. We truly enjoy the Bohemia Village Voice ... and look forward to the next newsletter. You guys are a blast! Kathleen Howe, Connetquot Public Library, Long Island, New York. Thank you so much, Kathleen, the book looks fascinating and we’ll be publishing extracts from it over the coming months. Nice to be thought of as a ‘blast’ – ed.

Arthur Green I wonder if anyone can help me with my family history research? This is a photograph of my grandfather (Arthur Lennard Green – born 1881) who was born and lived in Hastings. He is shown wearing a football shirt. The back of the photo states Hastings & St.Leonards F.C. 1901, but I cannot find any information about the team. Any football history “buffs” out there? Thank you for any help. Colin Green, Tower Road.

Can any readers help Colin?

Street parties? Dear Sir, why not invite residents to consider doing street parties? It would be a good way to build strong neighbourhoods and get to meet new residents. Maybe a prize for the best part? St Peter’s Road resident.
