This new dwelling was designed for the well-known van Rooyen family who have a long and successful history in the town of Walvis Bay. With vacant upmarket properties on the Lagoon front being very scarce the client was fortunate to acquire a North facing corner plot facing the Esplanade. The new dwelling had to consolidate the core family as well as Mr. van Rooyen Senior, each having their own private quarters (living unit) combined into one dwelling. The van Rooyens are private; family orientated people, but enjoy entertaining guests. They enjoy long quiet evenings around the fireplace relaxing, reading and doing things about the house. The client wanted a light airy house with clean uncluttered spaces, straight lines and slick quality finishes with a modern appeal. The building was positioned on top of a raised â€œfloatingâ€? platform in order to maximize the elevation of the ground floor towards the magnificent lagoon view. The design had to be sophisticated and appropriate for the coastal conditions, comfortable and a modern interpretation of a holiday home on the beachfront. Natural light is probably the most important design element of this dwelling and the effects of the natural light on the interiors and exteriors of the building. Floor to ceiling windowpanes were used to enable maximum light penetration and also to ensure maximum viewing frames towards the Lagoon. The large transparent panels in the lounge,
substantially by reducing the need for electrical lighting, cooling and heating. The glass specification was important and contains a solar protective quality reducing the glare over the water and at the same time increases privacy. The loose standing staircase is the central focal element on the ground floor and especially during the mornings stands brightly lit up forming beautiful shading patterns on the floor and walls. The industrial orientated design features of the staircase were constructed from 316L stainless steel tubing, stainless steel fixings and solid beechwood. The Âą 2m wide balconies on the first floor and roof structure enclosing the balconies provide protection against the setting sun through passive design. A considerable amount of energy and collaboration with the client went into the detailing of the internal design in order to ensure a continuous quality of interior spaces. The internal spaces are interesting, comfortable, sophisticated and sometimes unusual. A purposefully refining process of constantly stripping the design concept of unnecessary and conventional detailing was required in order to obtain a pure and true product. This rationalizing process not only happened during the concept design, but also had to continue down to the finest and smallest detailing. The quality of the construction and finishes are highly commendable and we must congratulate the contractor on producing an excellent product, which was an important requirement to make this building a success. “Don't delay, test today!” Isn't it ironic that we only tend to think about the efficiency of our burglar alarm systems when we and our most precious ones are not at home? We secure our homes to keep our families and our prized possession safe, but we never test to ensure that everything is still in proper working order – much like doing a check-up of our vital signs at the doctor. Only difference is that the “health” of your home or business' security system should be checked once a month, not only for when you are not present – burglars don't keep office hours, they also visit from January to November. How do you test your burglar alarm system? • Call your response company to notify them that you are testing your security system. • Notify everyone in the house that you will be testing the system to avoid any medical emergencies (e.g. heart failures, anxiety attacks, etc.) • Make a checklist of all the armed entry points and check them off when you test them. Close all windows and doors that have sensors, open individually and check that each one indicates changes correctly on the control panel. • Test motion sensors by having someone move in each zone and checking the control panel for a violation. • Also remember to test electrical fencing, beams, panic buttons etc. • If the response company has not received any signal from you, call in an expert, like the team from Master Alarms.

Thai chicken cakes
500g chicken fillets 1 onion chopped 1 grated carrot Piece ginger chopped Piece lemon grass chopped 1tsp chopped garlic A dash or two of soya sauce 1 handful of fresh coriander Salt
Put all ingredients in food processor and chop until chicken is fine. Shallow fry in spoonfuls until golden brown and cooked through. A great dish for Spring â€“ serve with crisp garden salad on the side with coriander and lime dressing.

Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme Whether you’re going to Scarborough Fair or not, the Festive Season is on hand and most of us are already planning menus. PARSLEY – Petroselinum crispum Two varieties are commonly available at garden centres – the curly moss and the Italian flat leaf. The forms is used fresh as garnish with a variety of dishes and the latter is preferred by chefs for cooking as it does not lose its distinct flavor when subjected to long periods of heat. Ideal for “slow cooking” like stews, soups and casseroles. Parsley, however, becomes rather tasteless when dried. If you have an abundant supply, rather freeze in ice cubes or zipper bags for future use. It is rich in vitamins A and C and as an anti-oxidant it helps to relieve kidney and bladder infections, jaundice and coughs. Juice with other veggies such as carrots, celery and beetroot or make tea by pouring boiling water over some leaves and stems, steep for 5 minutes and drink with (or without) a sweetener of your choice. SAGE – Salvia officionalis Very aromatic herb which at the same time is a beautiful focus plant with rough textured grey-green leaves and spikes of white or blue flowers in spring. Helps to break down fat in dishes like duck and pork and lends an unforgettable flavor to these dishes. A must-use-herb if these dishes are part of your menu. Could not resist that extra helping? Drink a cup of sage tea with honey – great for digestive problems – also for tension, depression and headache. ROSEMARY – Rosmarinus officinalis A very romantic name – ros is dew and marinus sea, thus Dew from the Sea. The most widely used essential
oil, medicinally and in the cosmetic field. As a culinary herb it subtly enhances the taste of poultry, mutton, beef and pork. Sprinkle a few fresh leaves over potatoes or other fresh veggies before oven roasting. Mixed with olive oil and coarse sea salt, it makes a delightful rub for roasts. When we had a barbercue my Dad placed some twigs on coals in a shovel and walked through the entire house to remove “evil spirits”. My Mum always said that the only evil spirits in our house was the bit of brandy in the pantry that she kept for tipsy tart! It certainly aromizes the house and drives away mosquitos and flies. THYME – Thymus vulgaris A hardy herbaceous mini shrub related to the mint family. The strong aroma of thyme can easily overshadow other flavours, so use, especially when fresh, sparingly. Use in rice, soups, stews, fish and all meat dishes – it loses nothing of its original flavor no matter how long the cooking process. For something really different, add a few fresh leaves of lemon thyme to mashed potatoes.
GROWING TIPS: All these herbs, with the exception of parsley, are propagated by cuttings and it is therefore better to purchase healthy plants at a garden centre. Parsley seeds don’t germinate easily and it would be time saving to buy a six pack seedling tray at your local nursery. According to folkloric superstition dating back to the Middle Ages, parsley grows better in a garden where the wife is boss in the house! Prepare beds for all these herbs with sufficient compost and 150gr/m2 of Efekto’s Vitaboost organic fertilizer. Work through thoroughly with a garden fork, level with a rake and water well. Leave overnight and plant the following day. After a month of planting, apply a liquid fertilizer (Efekto’s Seagro, Nitrosol or any of their Wondersol products, even Multifeed Classic) once a fortnight. Sage, rosemary and thyme are perennials and would need some cutting back or neatening up from time to time (or thyme to thyme) and prefer a full sun position. Parsley is a biennial herb and has to be replaced every second year and does better in a semi-shade position.
