Practice Networking at the PWH® Leadership Summit 4 Tips to Make it Easier Happy Springtime! During this time of renewal, we are fortunate to have our annual Professional Women in Healthcare® (PWH®) Leadership Summit in Denver, Colorado. It’s the perfect time to enhance our leadership skills, make new connections and network with colleagues. So many exciting plans originating from the Summit Committee are coming to fruition at this amazing healthcare industry event.

The theme of this year’s conference is Celebrate! We are celebrating that we are once again together in person. We are celebrating accomplishments of the healthcare industry. We are celebrating each of our individual achievements too.

One of the things that I love about the PWH® Leadership Summit is all the wonderful connections I have made. No matter the industry event, I can always connect with another PWH® member.

Making new connections can be intimidating. Introducing yourself to a perfect stranger and initiating a conversation can be daunting. However, with practice, you become more comfortable making these connections. The PWH® Leadership Summit is the ideal event to practice because you are surrounded by immensely supportive women in our industry.

Along with the reward of meeting incredible people, it is possible to get more comfortable with initiating that first interaction. It just takes a plan and some practice. Here are a few tips for how to make connections at conferences and networking events a little easier:

1. The weather or other small talk is always an easy way to spark a conversation.

2. Find something you both have in common and talk about that (PWH® for example).

3. Ask about things you are interested in learning more about. For example, ask questions about their company and the person’s role in that company.

4. Be a little vulnerable and tell them about yourself.

These are tips that I have used in the past. However, there are many others out there.

Most importantly, keep practicing by approaching new people in a variety of settings. You will make connections that will help you learn more about our industry, provide future opportunities, and who knows, maybe even find a new, lifelong friend.

As a reminder, once you make the connection, you need to follow up. Ensure that you ask for their contact information so you can reach out to maintain the newly made acquaintanceship. Strike while the conversation is fresh in the person’s mind. Sending a brief email or a LinkedIn invitation within a day or two ensures the initial effort you made pays off.

If you are attending the PWH® Leadership Summit, I hope I have the opportunity to connect with you. If you are not at the PWH® Leadership Summit, I look forward to connecting at a future industry event.

2022 Outstanding Contribution Awards Thank You Jessica Wells and Khaki Weber Each year, the PWH® Chair recognizes two women for their outstanding contribution to the growth and success of PWH®. In January, Vicky Lyle, PWH® Chair and Vice President, Industry Associations at Owens & Minor, presented the 2022 PWH® Outstanding Contribution Award to Jessica Wells and Khaki Weber.

Jessica Wells serves as PWH® Membership Committee Chair and Sr. Director, Events Strategy and Marketing, Marketing and Communications at Vizient. “This past year, Jessica stepped into the Membership Chair role, elevated the networking program with the coffee and cocktail chats, and built out a strong membership committee,” said Vicky. “Most of all Jessica brings such incredible positive energy to the board and to our PWH® members.”

Khaki Weber serves as the PWH® Mentoring Committee Chair and is also a Partner at Weber & Associates Consulting Inc. “Khaki is our PWH® match.com, creating more mentoring matches than we have ever had and at the same time, heightening our PWH® brand in the industry,” said Vicky. “Khaki stepped up to take on the Mentoring Chair role this past year and has created a strong mentoring committee with vice chairs and committee members.”

Both recipients have been part of PWH® for several years and have foundationally contributed to the mission of PWH®, empowering women and helping to achieve a more diversely-led healthcare industry.

The PWH® Mentoring Committee Introduces Mentor Circles Khaki Weber Grows the Committee The success of PWH® depends upon the dedication of our committee members who help deliver leadership development benefits and who model leadership excellence. Mentorship is an especially important part of professional growth. This issue we spotlight the PWH® Mentoring Committee to find out what these volunteer leaders are doing to help make the PWH® mentoring program so successful, and to get a sneak preview at their new concept—Mentor Circles—and what they have planned for the PWH® Leadership Summit (a mini circle). When I was first approached about highlighting the mentoring committee, I immediately wanted the focus to be on our team. That is because THEY are extraordinary, and each brings unique strengths and gifts to our community, the greater PWH® family and our committee. We all volunteer our time to deliver opportunities.

Our Vice Chairs, Meredith Fathom, Shellene Baines and Trish Anderman are rallying around great benefits for our members! Trish Anderman and her Group Mentoring Subcommittee of Jamie Terran, Kacey Litz and Michele Sines are helping to make our PWH® Leadership Summit meaningful with a new approach to group mentoring— a program we’re calling Mentor Circle—which remains a memberonly PWH® benefit in conjunction with individual mentoring.

For those attending the Leadership Summit, we sure hope you will attend our “soft launch” of the Mentor Circle— a “mini circle.” For those who cannot be there with us in person, join us for the June webinar where Jamie will present much of the same Mentor Circle goals and lead its in-depth strengths finding reflection activity that helps

attendees realize what makes each of us AMAZING! We are excited to learn what interests you and your ideas to embrace building leaders for your upward career mobility, hiring, workplace challenges and topics for future Mentor Circle meetings. These are occasions to learn from one another and to network.

While Trish is putting the new group approach together and supporting mentees in their journey, Shellene and Meredith remain focused on the traditional PWH® mentoring program.

Shellene recruits and supports mentors, and Meredith drives individual mentoring connections and support.

Vice Chair, Group Mentoring & Mentee Support Trish Andermann, District Manager, Lead Management, Cook Medical

Cook Medical invents, manufactures and delivers a unique portfolio of medical devices to the healthcare systems of the world.

As District Manager for Lead Management, I support, guide and train physicians in the extraction of pacemaker and ICD leads.

I manage a complete Lead Management portfolio of products across multiple states along the Gulf Coast and Tennessee.

As Vice Chair of Group Mentoring and Mentee Support, I lead a subcommittee that is creating and implementing new Group Mentoring opportunities for PWH® Members.

We are currently coordinating a group mentoring experience, a Mini Circle, at the Leadership Summit. The Mini Circle program is an introduction to the Mentor Circle program that will be launched this fall. I am also responsible for supporting mentees within their individual mentor experience.

The theme of our Mini Circle at the Summit, Empowerment: Own + Share Your Strengths, has encouraged me to do a deep discernment into my own strengths. Until now, it has been difficult for me to articulate my strengths. But I can now confidently describe them as curiosity + learning, creativity, and collaboration + building relationships. As part of the Mentoring Committee, I have used my creativity in helping to develop the structure of the new

Mentor Circles program, collaborating with team members to execute all aspects of the mentor/mentee experience, and discovering new ways to expand mentoring opportunities for all PWH® members. I love to support women in their development and watch them thrive through the mentor program.

Member, Group Mentoring Subcommittee Jamie Terran, Vice President of Marketing and Education, Propper Manufacturing Company

Propper Manufacturing Company is a leading manufacturer of cleaning and sterility assurance products as well as diagnostic disposables. As the Vice President of Marketing and Education, I help our customers understand the benefits of being a Propper customer and the features and benefits of Propper products.

I oversee the creation of all marketing materials and partner with our distributors to promote Propper products. I also lead the Propper Academy, our free online portal for continuing education courses. We create content and partner with key opinion leaders in our field to provide current and interesting education for our students.

As a member of the Group Mentoring Subcommittee, I have taken the lead on creating content for the Mini Circle program at the Summit. I am also working with the group to launch the full Mentor Circle program this fall. We couldn’t be more excited to bring this program to PWH®.

I was introduced to the Mentoring Committee by Eryn Marx, Chair of the Technology Committee, who I met through another professional organization. After sharing with her my “side hustle” as a Career Coach to women, she thought the committee might be a good fit for me. As a Career Coach, I help women one-on-one and in groups, so this has been tremendously helpful in working on the Group Mentoring Committee. I love bringing together my experience as a woman working in healthcare and my experience supporting women to reach their goals to one amazing committee and to help launch the Mentor Circle program.

I’m fairly new to the team, but I recently drafted a Statement of Procedures (SOP) for the Mentor Circle program. It is still under review, but its intent is to establish the Mentor Circle purpose, scope, roles, responsibilities and process steps. Once effective, the SOP will help the Mentoring Committee and PWH® members execute and manage Mentor Circles effectively for many years to come. I also drafted some survey questions for the Summit to get feedback from session participants.

I am responsible for B. Braun’s Corporate Quality Management System that supports all of manufacturing sites and distribution centers in the United States and Dominican Republic. I just started this new role, but I am still the acting Site Head of Quality for B. Braun Daytona Beach, which I held for five years.

For PWH®, I serve as a member of the Group Mentoring Subcommittee, and I will be supporting the mentoring events at the Summit by being a “table helper” and ensuring we get participant feedback about the Mentor Circle experience.

participants experienced success. My experience provided opportunities to speak at conferences regarding mentoring, the benefits it has for organizations, including the impact it can have on diversity and inclusion.

My experience with mentoring spans almost 20 years. Additionally, I have led leadership workshops at a number of organizations.

As for the strengths that I bring to the Mentoring Committee, two come to mind.

First, connectedness. I like to be a bridge builder, connecting people from various backgrounds around a common objective.

I enjoy working with individuals who bring a variety of strengths and experience to the table, continuously learning from and supporting one another to achieve our goals. Second, positivity. I have an optimistic and upbeat approach and enjoy meeting new people. These two strengths support me immensely in my role with the PWH® Mentoring Committee, working with cross functional teams, reaching out to prospective mentors, and networking to promote the PWH® mentoring program.

Vice Chair, Individual Mentoring Meredith Fantom, Director of Marketing, Medline Industries LP

At Owens & Minor, I am responsible for the development and deployment of our Continuous Improvement Business System’s tools, training, technology and activities. I provide support to develop lean expertise and capabilities, to streamline processes and improve business objectives.

As Vice Chair of Recruiting & Mentor Support, I promote and recruit mentors and mentees for the PWH® mentoring program. I also create and develop content to help raise awareness and interest in the PWH® mentorship program. To ensure the success of the program, I facilitate check-ins with mentors who are currently participating.

At the PWH® Leadership Summit, I will be assisting wherever needed at the Mentor Meet Up Breakfast. I will help facilitate at the Mini Circle and answer questions about the mentoring program and how PWH® members can participate.

I work in Medline’s Exam Gloves Division and manage a team of four wonderful marketing managers, where we develop and execute on the U.S. institutional, retail and international marketing plans and goals, driving innovation and awareness within our extensive exam gloves product line.

As Vice Chair of Individual Mentoring, I assist with the matching, coordinating and development of our 1:1 mentor/mentee relationships. Individual mentoring is the core of the PWH® Mentoring Committee.

It’s how we got our start. At the Summit, we want to provide a set time and space

where our 1:1 mentoring participants have time to meet up, so we are hosting a breakfast. The fact that almost every single active mentoring relationship we have right now began during COVID means this breakfast will provide a new and fun opportunity to get everyone together to share a meal, advice and lots of laughs.

I am very organized, a great listener and a good coach for others. My strengths work really well on the Mentoring Committee because I have always been passionate about helping others develop, whether that is professionally at work or in their personal life. Listening to others and solving problems is something I enjoy, and I appreciate that others trust in me to help them. Isn’t that what mentoring is all about?! My organizational skills work great too. Everyone is moving a mile a minute these days, so I get to help by taking all the monthly meeting minutes. I have also started helping Khaki with our mentor/mentee match making.

If anyone has been through this process, you know that she takes great care and consideration into making all the 1:1 mentoring pairs. She completed a total of 91 pairs in 2021 (wow!) and uses a google sheet, live conversations and LinkedIn to facilitate this matchmaking. It is an honor to be working alongside someone with such a big heart, and I am excited to see what the rest of 2022 will bring for the PWH® mentoring committee!

This issue we spotlight mentee Megan Quevedo and her mentor Ellen Murray-Zapone. Although they come from different backgrounds in the healthcare industry, the match has proven incredibly successful. Ellen gets to give back, and Megan gets to move up.

Why were you seeking a mentor?

What was your goal?

When joining PWH®, I wanted to take advantage of all the great opportunities that come with membership. I am trying to build a solid foundation for my career.

So, working on leadership, communication and professional networking skills, as well as my confidence, seems instrumental to succeeding at my short-term and longterm goals.

Why has the relationship been successful?

What is your background?

I’ve worked in quality and regulatory affairs for almost eight years, I started in the dietary supplements industry and then moved into the medical device industry when I joined Dukal in 2018. I’ve been a member of PWH® since 2021.

We have monthly calls to touch base, and last year, we read Dare to Lead together

by Brene Brown. We discussed all the great examples from Brene and how they apply to our experiences. We also look to real life female role models and reflect on how their strength and courage empowers us. Although we come from different backgrounds (myself with quality and regulatory, and Ellen with sales), learning about Ellen’s different experiences

and hearing her advice broadens my perspective. I thoroughly enjoy our conversations and staying up to date with Ellen’s life.

What have you learned from your mentor?

Ellen has gone above and beyond to help me develop my skillsets, think outside the box and encourage me in my endeavors, both career wise and personally. I’m definitely a bit more on the reserved side, so our discussions on being bold and curious have helped me to be more assertive while staying true to myself and my integrity.

What is your take on the value of mentorship?

Mentorship in my opinion is invaluable.

Ellen’s motivation and guidance truly help me focus on my goals and develop professionally. I not only see Ellen as a mentor, but also as a friend. I would recommend mentorship to all trying to stay focused and realize their goals.

Mentor’s Perspective Ellen Murray Zappone, Enterprise Client Executive, Vizient

provides a good perspective on the overall business as a mentor.

What inspires you to mentor?

I have had great successes, and I have also endured many challenges along my career path. I hope sharing what I learned the “hard way” can help make Megan’s career journey a little easier. For example, women often think we need to work harder to get promoted. While working hard is important, it is also important to find a sponsor and find ways to be recognized for the quality of your work and leadership within an organization. I want to see women like Megan find success a little easier than I did.

What is your background, current company affiliation and position?

I have held a variety of roles within healthcare sales for almost 40 years. I spent most of my career in distribution with Cardinal and Owens & Minor. Five of my years with Owens & Minor were spent on site at Yale-New Haven Health as a manager of account development, so I had the opportunity to learn the inner workings of a health system. I was also a sales director in New England with Owens & Minor for many years, working with a team, calling on acute care hospitals and health systems.

Later, I spent five years in manufacturing with Avid Healthcare as a sales director in the Northeast (which became a part of Medical Action). The last five-plus years I have spent with Vizient in the GPO arena as a client executive with key accounts in New England. I work at all levels of the hospital in the areas of cost, quality and strategy, and I am responsible for matching my members’ needs to our variety of solutions. My background provides a solid, well-rounded experience in healthcare, and I hope this

What have you learned from your Mentee?

I have really enjoyed working with Megan.

She is smart, ambitious and articulate about her goals and aspirations. She has a bright future, and I encourage her to speak up and go after what she wants. She is only a few years older than my daughter, and I enjoy watching her take risks and grow as a professional young woman.

What has worked well with you and your mentee?

We have both broad conversations as well as targeted discussions. I listen to Megan share her goals regarding PWH® and Dukal.

I encourage her to pursue them, and she takes the actionable steps required to move forward with her career goals. She has taken on a variety of leadership roles within her community and has received a well-deserved promotion within Dukal. We read Dare to Lead by Brene Brown and discussed what it means to lead with our values and how to be our authentic selves in the workplace. We have talked about strengths and areas of improvement and

how Megan can move out of her comfort zone at a pace that works for her. The next discussion will be on how to move beyond limiting beliefs to achieve what we want in life based on Marie Forleo’s book, Everything is Figureoutable.

Why has the relationship been successful?

We are both committed to the relationship. We have formed a nice bond, and we enjoy talking monthly. We follow a structure of following up on a few things from the previous call and then always leave some time to catch up on the podcasts, music and movies we enjoy.

What is your take on the value of mentorship?

I have truly enjoyed getting to know Megan. Although we come from different backgrounds, we have found a great deal in common. Having access to someone outside your company who will keep your comments confidential provides a safe forum where Megan can share her ideas without the fear of her comments being taken the wrong way. I encourage her to be bold, but I also provide a sounding board to test her theories and get feedback. For example, last week we spoke about setting up boundaries, and I was struck by how much Megan has grown and is not afraid to speak up and recognize the value of her time and opinions. I try to be Megan’s biggest cheerleader, and I don’t have to look far to find many things to cheer about. Many thanks to PWH® and to Khaki Weber for setting up this wonderful connection.

DEVOUR: AT THE SUMMIT

Indulge Together!

Our annual PWH® Leadership Summit event is back! After two years of missing each other, we are live and in person with an array of great speakers, learning opportunities, networking and of course joining together in community. As this issue of the PWH ® Connect Journal went to press, our Summit team was in the final stages of putting together all the special touches, experiences and opportunities for you to connect with one another. Devour the mountain landscape as you engage with new colleagues and old friends.

Monday Night Monday night we host our evening cocktail reception starting at 4:30. The reception is at the Westin Westminster Lake House, a lakeside room across the promenade from the Kachina restaurant.

After the reception, take advantage of an opportunity to connect in small dinner groups. We have worked to solidify a few different dining locations with reservations for groups of 10 after 6:30.

So, although dinner is on your own, we encourage you to join a group if you don’t already have one. If you want to meet some new acquaintances or if you already have a group, ask about sign-up

sheets when you check in at registration.

All locations will be a short Uber ride away from the Westin Westminster and hosted by one of our board members.

Exercise Tuesday Morning Start Tuesday off right with either yoga or a group walk/run. Our wonderful friend and member Lora Pfeffer has agreed to lead us again in a Morning Mindfulness Yoga Session starting at 6:30 on the Fountain Greens (sponsored by Premier Parking).

Yoga mats will be available. This year we are also offering a running/walking group for guests who want to put on their tennis shoes and start their morning out

With a woman of color having become the first female vice president of the United States, leadership experts everywhere are calling for many more women to occupy the top management ranks of organizations, large and small. Yet the number of women in the so-called “C-suite” remains minuscule – only 27 percent in S&P 500 companies, where only 6 percent are CEOs. The numbers are astonishing in light of growing evidence that companies with more diverse top management teams are more profitable than those with the least diversity.

But as discouraging as these numbers are, an even more disturbing and mostly untold story is the price paid by women who rise to the top – especially women of color. It’s one of sacrificing their relationships, their interests, their personal growth and even their health.

Research shows these sacrifices are even steeper for women of color because of the additional barriers they face in moving up the organizational ladder.

What’s more, women’s sacrifices have surged in the pandemic. Research by consultancy McKinsey & Co. shows that women accounted for 54 percent of pandemic-related job losses globally, despite being only 39 percent of the workforce. And those who are still employed are burdened with the lion’s share of family responsibilities. More than three times as many women as men are doing the majority of childcare and housework. It should be no surprise that 2 million women are thinking about taking leaves or resigning their jobs altogether.

Even prior to the pandemic, the data clearly shows that progressing to the top levels of an organization, whether a Fortune 500 or a 100-employee firm, takes a much

bigger toll on women. It’s a key reason why many fewer women get there.

Aster Angagaw is an exception.

Until October 2020, she was president and CEO of ServiceMaster Brands. The Memphis-based company’s franchised and company-owned cleaning and restoration services generates $2.6 billion annually in system-wide revenue. Aster has held senior management jobs over the last two decades at both ServiceMaster and Sodexo, the $25 billion French company.

Using sobering facts, the stories of 19 other women who have risen to the top of large organizations around the world and the author’s own experience at Sodexo and ServiceMaster, We Are So Much More shows the usually sizable personal price that women pay to become organizational leaders. She has been recognized as a top performer who goes beyond basics to help the team and to serve business needs.

Congress Can Upgrade Preparedness with PREVENT Pandemics Act

The Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) continues to work with Congress to support a pandemic preparedness strategy that builds domestic reserves, diversifies production and is distributor managed to ensure a resilient healthcare supply chain. The recent introduction of bipartisan legislation in the United States Senate gives us reason for optimism that Congress may be able to pass legislation by the end of the year that applies many of the lessons our members have acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Richard Burr (R-NC), the Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, have introduced the Prepare for and Respond to Existing Viruses, Emerging New Threats (PREVENT) Pandemics Act. The PREVENT Pandemics Act is focused on strengthening the nation’s public health and medical preparedness and response systems in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is much to be commended in the PREVENT Pandemics Act: > Bipartisan Legislation: HIDA applauds Senator Murray and Senator Burr for their leadership on pandemic preparedness.

Bipartisan solutions are required to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. HIDA has worked closely on the drafting of preparedness legislation and worked closely with Senators Murray and Burr to incorporate policy recommendations that are based on our years of collaboration with federal partners on preparedness and the medical supply chain.

> Public-Private Partnerships: The PREVENT Pandemics Act recognizes the vital role of public-private partnerships in managing medical supplies during a pandemic. The bill incorporates authorizing the Department of Health and Human Services to contract with medical products distributors to manage a surge capacity of pandemic supplies. This would create a bigger cushion of needed supplies, and it allows for critical time to ramp up manufacturing production. > Extended Contract Duration: To invest in capacity, manufacturers need

certainty that there will be long term market demand for certain medical supplies. The Federal government should make long-term commitments to manufacturing partners, which will ensure surge capacity in the event of a public health emergency. HIDA believes five-year contracts would give manufacturers a stronger incentive to invest in capacity.

HIDA has welcomed the introduction of the PREVENT Pandemics Act and has continued to share our input with Congress on these issues. Medical products distributors have unique subject matter expertise on this topic.

There are more than 500 healthcare distribution centers in over 46 states, with established, direct relationships with end users of medical supplies.

HIDA members deliver medical products and supplies, manage logistics and offer customer services to virtually every healthcare provider.

In 2020, they reliably delivered 51 billion units of PPE “the last mile” to providers. As Congress continues to deliberate on these critical issues, HIDA is proud to remain a voice for our industry in Washington and beyond.
