Growing our Organization to New Heights!

I am extremely honored to be your PWH® Chair for 2023 and 2024. Since PWH® began in 2005, we have evolved into a key organization committed to helping women learn, grow and succeed in the healthcare industry. From its humble beginnings, we now have a vibrant, nearly 800-member strong organization.

Looking back on the leadership of all the previous chairs, I am in awe of the amazing women leaders that have helped this organization come so far! Many of these leaders have been mentors to me and others in PWH®. My career path would have been different without their guidance. A special thank you goes to Vicky Lyle for her leadership and her willingness to help me get ready for this new term.

During my time as Chair, PWH® will commit to a goal of growing to a new membership level of 1,000 members by the end of 2024, or sooner. We will strengthen our organization by reviewing our bylaws, finetuning the organization’s key roles, and improving our policies and procedures. We will also strengthen our committees and make sure we have a deeper leadership bench to support PWH® for years to come.

Continuing our commitment to our members, we will include additional board development opportunities so that more people who would like board leadership experience can be involved. Our goal is to build an organization that can support exponential growth.

There will be ongoing commitment to our mentoring program, which has grown incredibly in the past five years. There is so much more to do in this area to support our members. We are excited to see the mentoring programs flourish. We are also excited to offer top-notch

programming for our annual PWH® Leadership Summit (which is right around the corner!)

Last, but certainly not least, we will continue to fulfill our vision of creating a culturally inclusive healthcare industry equally led by women. To do this, we need to make our membership even more robust. We hope to include more men and women, but also healthcare providers and supply chain professionals while still adding distribution and manufacturing members.

With so much to do, we must start now and encourage more people to join our organization. Please also let everyone know (members and non-members) about our 2023 PWH® Leadership Summit, May 1-3, in San Antonio, TX! All year long we are committed to offering amazing programming for all our members to learn and grow.

I can’t wait to see what the year will bring, and I know that with our hard work and our commitment to our vision and our members, we will continue to grow. Thank you for allowing me to serve this amazing group and industry.

Forever in your service, Allison Therwhanger

SITUATIONAL MENTORING
Mary Leonhardt

Mary Leonhardt Shares Her PWH® Situational Mentoring Experience

Recently, Mary Leonhardt was promoted to a regional vice president role at B. Braun. To help prepare for the high-level interview, she reached out to the PWH® Mentoring Committee whose members helped to coordinate a situational mentoring experience. As opposed to a longer mentorship relationship, situational mentoring is a one- or two-time meeting. It is ideal when someone is interviewing for a new role and wants feedback in advance as they prepare. It could also help someone who has a dilemma in the workplace and wants external feedback to help manage it. The PWH® Mentoring Committee matched Leonhardt with two industry leaders and long-time PWH® members: Cathy Denning and Cindy Juhas. Below, Leonhardt shares her PWH® situational mentoring experience.

Connect: Congratulations on your promotion. What is your official title and what are your key responsibilities?

Leonhardt: My new title is Regional Vice President, Healthcare Systems. In this role, I…

1. Strategically lead, coach and develop an executive selling team of Directors of Healthcare Systems who call on a group of the top IDNs in the country.

2. Drive collaboration and accountability across the organization and within my team to achieve sales and gross profit goals.

3. Work to align with and achieve both internal and customer strategies, goals and initiatives.

Connect: What was your title and role just prior to the promotion?

Leonhardt: Prior to my recent promotion, I was Director, Healthcare Systems. I held

this position from February 2017 to August 2017. My three key responsibilities were:

1. Deliver alignment spanning key functions within the B. Braun organization

2. Develop and deliver a fully collaborative strategic vision and plan across assigned key customers

3. Provide solutions to our customers to help them achieve outcomes through a comprehensive and collaborative approach

Connect: Can you describe specific reasons why you believe you were perceived as ready for the promotion?

Leonhardt: I developed and presented my vision for this new role, specifically outlining my strategy on how to execute this vision, and how my unique experiences position me to develop and execute on this vision.

Spring 2023 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org 9

Connect: Can you tell us why you pursued situational mentoring from PWH®?

Leonhardt: I needed unbiased feedback from individuals who have led leaders. I needed feedback from a fresh perspective, and I needed to learn how to communicate my experience. I had five main goals for my situational mentorship:

1. Gain an understanding of how to position myself as a leader of leaders, versus a leader of front-line reps.

2. Determine how best to advocate for myself (how aggressive to get) and to ask others to advocate on my behalf.

3. Determine a strategy for interviewing with a manager I have reported to for a long time.

4. Determine a strategy for showcasing how my strengths benefit the company.

5. Gain an unbiased (external) perspective of the interviewing process for a high-level promotion/hire.

Connect: How did Cathy Denning and Cindy Juhas help you meet these goals?

Leonhardt: They were openly frank about areas where I wasn’t communicating my goals, and this gave me specifics on where to improve my messaging to improve my branding.

Connect: How many conversations did you have with your situational mentors?

Leonhardt: I had one conversation that lasted an hour, and it was so very effective.

Connect: How did you prepare for the conversation?

Leonhardt: I provided them with my resume (it was an “internal” resume). I had already put together the beginnings of my vision of the role and highlighted

this for them. I probably put in 10-15 hours of reflection and prep for my conversation with them, in addition to resume completion.

Connect: Please share how you benefited from your PWH® situational mentoring experience.

Leonhardt: It comes down to three key takeaways:

1. Fresh External Perspective

Neither Cathy nor Cindy knew me other than maybe sharing a table at a PWH® meal. They didn’t know me or my reputation at my company. So they were able to provide direction on how to be specific and purposeful in communicating

me for a Vice President position. I have always had confidence in my skill set. Having this affirmed in a pseudo interview/ conversation with individuals who did not know me provided tremendous confidence.

3. Being Unapologetically Confident

I believe it was Cathy who used a phrase that stuck with me, and I even used it during my interview. I had the experience and skill set to be “unapologetically confident” in my ability to do this job. I was already confident. But being “unapologetically confident” illustrated the importance of letting that confidence shine through in my interview without worrying about the confidence appearing “overconfident” or “boastful.”

how my experiences had prepared me for this specific role. From a fundamental perspective, I gained a fresh, outside look at my resume.

2. Tools for Communicating My Value

Having a great work reputation and making it known in an interview are two different things. I learned how to be strategic with my language, to say more with less words. I learned how to explain the significance of my work successes, how I got there, and how that provides a strong foundation for future success. Cathy and Cindy also helped provide additional confidence that my body of work is strong and is valid and did qualify and prepare

Connect: Please share any take aways from the actual interviewing process, particularly given the high-level of the position for which you interviewed.

Leonhardt: I had been a leader. I had trained leaders. I had been a trusted advisor to other leaders. But I had not yet had the experience to lead leaders. And it is different. The conversation with Cindy and Cathy helped me to put that difference into words and explain to the people interviewing me why they were not taking a risk by elevating me to this greater level of responsibility in my organization.

Release Tension with Ragdoll Pose

Being a Professional Woman in Healthcare offers many wonderful experiences. It truly is an honor to work alongside incredible women that I have learned so much from throughout the years. But those positives come with a few disadvantages, like hours sitting at a desk, awkwardly folding into an airline seat, lugging a suitcase through DFW International, standing in heels for an absurd amount of time, etc. These can cause many different use-based injuries. For me, it caused awful neck and back pain.

To combat all the damage that I do to my body, I have learned to use my yoga practice to alleviate the aches and pains. Time and time again, I return to one of the easiest poses in a yoga practice: Ragdoll Pose, also known as Uttanasana, or forward fold (see figure 1).

The beauty of this low impact pose is its simplicity: fold forward with as little muscle resistance as possible. Fold, relax, and let gravity bring relief.

The goal of the Ragdoll Pose is to relax everything. You want to mimic the pose’s namesake and gently let the force of gravity extend your joints and muscles. This allows for realignment by reversing the compression caused by sitting, standing, carrying—pretty much everything you do once your feet hit the ground. The force of gravity is constantly adding pressure to your body; allowing it to readjust in this low impact pose is a way you can use that force to reverse negative effects.

If you have trouble with a full forward fold, it is critical that you never force the pose. Limitations can be from lack of mobility (flexibility), injury or simply lack of use. Regardless of the cause, there is no benefit to forcing your body into a pose. All the benefits derive from relaxing the muscles and allowing the body to release into position, allowing for the lengthening of muscle and realignment through passivity.

Once you are able to hold Ragdoll, the benefits can be significant and include enhanced focus and mood, improved flexibility, reduced stiffness and pain and

even improved digestion. For those with a good base practice, I encourage you to try and add shoulder and chest openers (see figure 2). By pressing both palms together and extending the arms behind you, the same opening can be achieved for upper body, all by using the same low impact pose. Whether a beginner or seasoned Yogi, the benefits of Ragdoll make it worth trying. This pose has relieved some incredible back pain post extended work trip, and I hope that my sharing here can bring some relief to you as well. Namaste!

3 Sets of Upcoming Mentoring Circles

Setting Goals to Bring

More Balance to Work and Life

You can have it all, just not all at once. There is a tendency for women to think they can do everything and do it well, but this leads to burnout among other mental health issues. Many people resolve to make changes and set goals at the start of a year. The first two sets of Mentor Circles will bring together professionals who are looking for greater clarity, direction, and purpose to their lives. Each participant will share their experiences with seeking balance, attempting to gain balance and, ultimately, clearly define what balances means for them.

> 1st Set – Join facilitator Kylie Gilberg, Senior Marketing Manager, Dental Division, Midmark, on Fridays, Feb 24, Mar 10, Mar 24, Apr 7, and Apr 21, from 1-2 pm ET.

> 2nd Set – Join facilitator Saran Stevens-Ross, Sr. Manager, RX Sales Administration, McKesson on Tuesdays, Feb 28, Mar 14, Mar 28, Apr 11, and Apr 25, from 5:30-6:30 pm ET.

Finding Success in Healthcare After a Career Change

It can be challenging to break into a new industry. For many, the real work begins once you have started in a new

role. It is often overwhelming to ramp up knowledge, build a new network, and translate existing skills into a new organization. This Mentor Circle will encourage open discussion between individuals making a career transition to share ideas and best practices based on their experiences. Whether changing roles or changing disciplines, Mentor Circle members can expect to gain tools and ideas to aid in navigating the healthcare industry after a career transition.

> 3rd Set – Join facilitator Jennifer Eiselein, Sr. Director, Marketing and E-commerce, TIDI on Fridays, Mar 3, Mar 17, Mar 31, Apr 14, and Apr 28, from 1-2 pm ET.

The Sandra Parker Leadership Scholarship

Recently, PWH ® lost one of its founding members, Sandi Parker. Sandi made many friends and had countless achievements within her more than forty years of involvement within the healthcare industry, but the accomplishment she was most proud of was her relationship with Professional Women in Healthcare ® . PWH ® is built upon a strong history of women leaders in the healthcare supply chain industry who continue to create a platform for progressive leadership and mentoring for the next generation. Sandi was one of the seventeen founding members and the third chairwoman of the organization. She had a passion for helping to create leaders. She helped grow the organization from the seventeen original members to over seven hundred members today. Sandi leaves a legacy of strong leaders that she helped develop, mentor and grow.

In honor of Sandi’s commitment to leadership development, PWH®, with funding from Graham-Field, has established the Sandra Parker Leadership Scholarship. Each year the scholarship will provide one woman in the healthcare industry with funding to attend the PWH® Leadership Summit. The annual scholarship includes a 1-year complimentary PWH® membership as well as airfare, hotel and registration for the Leadership Summit. The 2023 PWH® Leadership Summit will be held in San Antonio, TX, May 1-3, 2023. This year’s recipient will be announced soon.

Succession Planning is Part of Leadership

Succession planning is an important part of leadership because it is critical to the ongoing success of an organization. Leaders must encourage the leading members of our organizations to seriously consider how to sustain our organization’s momentum and mission, groom future leaders, and delegate authority effectively. As a leader, it is especially important to develop others to be our successor for the day that we step into a new role.

18 Spring 2023 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org
Vicky Lyle (front left) has passed the gavel to our new PWH® Chair, Allison Therwhanger (front right). COACH’S CORNER

PWH® has a wonderful succession planning program that has helped us over the years stay focused on our strategic goals, grow the organization, and most importantly advance our mission and make our vision a reality. We use the “9-Box” succession planning tool.

As of January 1, 2023, Allison Therwhanger will be at the helm of the Professional Women in Healthcare® (PWH®) organization as the 2023-2024 Chair. I have been honored to serve as PWH® Chair during the 2021-2022 term. PWH® is our industry’s only organization focused solely on leadership development, specifically leadership diversity, and we take succession planning seriously!

Many of you already know Allison. She is the Vice President of Innovia Medical Corporation. She has been at my side as Chair Elect throughout the past two years. Allison has been a member of PWH® and the Treasurer since the organization’s beginning. She is a strong leader and will continue to advance our mission of creating a culturally inclusive industry equally led by women.

With each new PWH® Chair, the leadership team of PWH® strives to take the PWH® organization to the next level. We learn from one another and support each other. As of January 1, I will take on the duties of the Past Chair position, and for the next two years, I will continue to serve in a supporting role to help Allison with whatever she needs. As Allison steps into her new Chair role, Ashleigh McLaughlin, Chief Financial Officer of IMCO, will step into the Chair Elect role and begin her two-year training to become Chair.

PWH® has a wonderful succession planning program that has helped us over the years stay focused on our strategic goals, grow the organization, and most

importantly advance our mission and make our vision a reality. We use the “9-Box” succession planning tool. This tool is used to identify the performance

and potential of our team, including those who are ready to take on advanced positions and those who may need more development. The tool helps us build a bench of resources as others move up or out of our organization.

There are many tools to help you get involved in the succession planning process. The most important thing, though, is to have a succession plan. The PWH® organization will be around for many years to come, and it is important for the stability of the organization to have a successful succession plan. I know that our next Chair, Allison Therwhanger, is ready to lead PWH® because of the strong succession plan that the PWH® organization has in place that has prepared her for this role as it prepared me for this role as well.

Does your company have a succession plan?

If not, consider planning tools that that can help you get started.

What if you aren’t part of the succession planning process? How do you play a role in your succession plan placement?

> Talk to your manager – let your interest be known!

> Network with others in your organization – ask for advice

> Identify your gaps – and work on those skills

> Use tools such as Clifton Strengths Finder to identify your strengths and share them

New HIDA Summit Fosters Intentional Approach to Supplier Diversity

HIDA convened its first-ever Supplier Diversity Summit as part of its fall 2022 Streamlining Healthcare Expo & Business Exchange. This summit was inspired by HIDA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the awareness that many healthcare entities are becoming more intentional about purchasing healthcare products from diverse suppliers. The overflow crowd heard from panelists who urged a purposeful approach to sourcing from diverse suppliers.

Supplier diversity is not a trend or a passing fad. Supplier diversity is a strategic commitment to provide equitable access to purchasing and contracting opportunities for diverse businesses. Some of HIDA’s member companies have had supplier diversity programs for 30 years or more. One of our panelists at HIDA’s Supplier Diversity Summit was Angie Thomas, Vice President of Government Accounts Manager & Enterprise Supplier Diversity at Cardinal Health. Angie observed that “recently, we have seen more language on supplier diversity from our customers. But it’s not a buzzword. It’s a priority we are going to continue to drive forward.”

Supplier diversity is about building wealth and creating health equity in the communities we serve. A strong supplier diversity program allows healthcare systems to promote wealth in the communities they serve, which ultimately supports and improves health equity.

Providers are looking to achieve multiple supplier diversity goals. Although specific goals vary from provider to provider, the

strongest programs have the following three goals in common:

1. Growing the inclusion of diverse vendors in the RFP process

2. Growing the RFP awards and ultimately the amount of diverse spend

3. A strong development and engagement program, with a focus on community engagement

Distributors have a role to play in supplier diversity by helping providers meet their goals. Distributors can create their own supplier diversity programs and assist providers in identifying qualified and certified diverse suppliers.

Participants at the Supplier Diversity Summit were advised to:

> Build A Network. Partner with a minority company to assist in the creation of a first-class program.

> Be Inquisitive. Ask providers questions to gauge their supplier diversity needs. Does the provider have Supplier Diversity goals and initiatives? What is the dollar goal of the provider? Where is the desired need for spend – on services, products, etc.?

> Lean In. Don’t wait to be asked. Be proactive by presenting diverse suppliers to your provider customers. Provide a list of MBEs and the products that they distribute.
