Acting on Feedback Generates Success I hope you had a wonderful summer filled with vacations and fun. At PWH® we have just wrapped up our August board meeting where we spent time reflecting on this year’s PWH® Leadership Summit and planning for next year’s live event, taking place May 16-18, 2022 in Denver, Colorado. This summer, the PWH® Leadership Summit was the first virtual conference for PWH® and according to all the feedback we received, it was a success. We could not have done it without our Summit Sponsors and our Corporate Partners that support us throughout the year.

Each year, we strive to set the bar higher for the PWH® Leadership Summit.

Your perspective is critical to our success.

We need to know from you how to continuously improve our mission and programs so we can take actionable steps.

In a recent Harvard Business Review article entitled, “Research: Men Get More Actionable Feedback Than Women,” Elena Doldor, Madeleine Wyatt and

Jo Silvester share their research to explain differences in how evaluators provide developmental feedback to females and males. In general, men are encouraged to be the change that is needed in leadership situations, while women are encouraged to cope with change and help others cope with it too. Men are encouraged to network up, while women are encouraged to network horizontally.

As an organization, PWH® encourages members to seek feedback, prepare to hear it, and then act on it. We aim to model this behavior as well. We must listen to the feedback given and determine what to do with it. It is in our power to accept constructive criticism at face value or dig deeper to learn more about the skills we need to grow and evolve.

PWH® Honors Natalie Martin with the 2021 Jana Quinn Inspirational Award

Natalie Martin

The Jana Quinn Inspirational Award was created to celebrate the memory of one of our PWH® founders, Jana Quinn.

She was family focused, a mentor, role model, leader, professional, a loyal friend, a person not afraid of struggle, encouraging, accepting and so much more. Jana’s combination of endearing qualities drew

others in and made them better just by knowing her. This award recognizes an inspirational person in the healthcare industry who encompasses the qualities that were an inherent part of Jana.

The 2021 Jana Quinn Inspirational Award goes to a leader in our industry who, in all areas of her life, epitomizes the

word Inspiration. Natalie Martin serves as Creative Services Director of NDC and chairs the PWH® Marketing Committee.

She is a well-respected woman in the industry and strives to empower her female colleagues and friends, exudes confidence, always brings an energizing and upbeat vibe to any interaction, and lives every

day putting her family first. Her nominator comments, “Natalie embodies all of the characteristics of Jana Quinn. I think Jana would be proud to see her receive this award. She is an inspiration to so many women, personally and professionally.”

Jana Quinn endured struggles in her life. This year’s recipient overcame an already challenging year while carrying and delivering a high-risk pregnancy nearly four months early, followed by a 110-day stay in the NICU. Natalie dealt with the ups and downs of having a premature baby in stride and still met her work and volunteer obligations—she was even texting about PWH® on the way to the hospital! She couldn’t better represent the spirit of Jana in today’s industry.

Natalie began her career with NDC, Inc. 14 years ago where she has held various positions within the marketing department, leading up to her present-day role as Director of Creative Services, managing NDC’s Marketing and Creative Services team and directing all creative endeavors and strategic vision for corporate branding and marketing efforts. Natalie is a proud member of PWH® and a supporter of empowering women to lead and succeed in all aspects of life.

Natalie has been described by Tracy Boyd, her longtime friend and coworker, as “one of those individuals whose passion is infectious. She inspires those around her to improve upon even our best efforts in order to follow her to the next level. She is a giving and empathetic leader who serves

as an inspiration to an entire industry beyond the walls of NDC.” Natalie’s boss, Ian Fardy, shared how Natalie’s “commitment to NDC and her unwavering dedication to the brand, her team and most importantly her family, especially through 2020, is remarkable.

PWH® Honors Cathy Denning with the Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership Award of Distinction 2021 The Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership Award recognizes women who have experienced significant growth to become accomplished leaders in our industry.

Such a leader has catapulted her career, scope of responsibility and professional development. She exudes confidence, integrity, and is well respected by the industry, her peers and her subordinates.

She is committed to giving back and is a leader that others desire to follow and be mentored by.

This year’s recipient has all these qualities. Her nominator shared, “she exudes servant leadership and integrity. She operates in a manner that is consistently customer focused. She is always looking out for the "team" and always willing to help and mentor others. Although her wisdom seems endless, she is forever humble, and gracious in her interactions. She is a role model and inspiration for all and embodies all that this award is about.”

Today, we recognize Cathy Denning as the 2021 Anne Eiting Klamar Leadership of Distinction Award Winner.

Cathy started her career as a nurse and rose to senior leadership within Vizient. Before retiring last spring, Cathy’s title was Group Senior Vice President, Sourcing Analytics, Operations, and Center of Excellence. It was her clinical background that gave her the foundation to understand how her team’s work and decisions affect members and their patients. Accordingly, her servant leadership earned Cathy the MVP High Impact Award in 2019.

Cathy has shared many words of wisdom and has been an advocate for creating leaders. She has often said that "we earn then obligate." In other words, leaders should restrain from granting expanded authority to people without first expecting them to step up and demonstrate their potential for growth before assigning them new responsibility.

Vizient’s involvement in Professional Women in Healthcare® is now woven into the fabric of Vizient’s DNA offering, and Cathy is responsible for that. She joined PWH® and became an advisor to the board as PWH® began widening the scope of our membership to include representatives of GPO’s.

After almost 21 years at Vizient, Cathy retired in April of this year, but thankfully, will continue to volunteer as an advisor to the PWH® Board. While she is retiring from Vizient, her contributions to Vizient will continue. President and Chief Operating Officer for Vizient Bharat Sundaram stated, "We are grateful for Cathy’s many contributions toward Vizient’s success. The foundational practices and principles she helped put in place will serve us and our members well for many years to come.”

Chris Moreland Finding Humanity was presented by President & CEO, Moreland Accord Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Chris Moreland. Chris described the systems of thought that alienate us and provided ideas for building new connections. He also reminded us about famous American Cultural Anthropologist Margaret Mead who considered the ancient cultures she studied “civilized” when she could detect that those cultures practiced group care.

Christine Arme Leading through Change was presented by Vice President, Healthcare Systems & Strategic Channels, 3M Medical Solutions Division Christine Arme.

Christine helped us to understand how energy, emotion and shared meaning relate. When we remain aware of the energetic and emotional tenor of our environment, we can better notice and thus not fear the signs of change.

Instead of fearfully resisting change, we can gracefully embrace it with respect for what was before and excitement for what lies ahead.

Brad Connett H2H (humanity to humanity) – The Next Leadership Imperative was presented by President, Henry Schein Medical Group, Brad Connett. Brad reminded us that humanity is the central part of life, society and leadership. Being honest is being vulnerable. Personal and professional lives have blurred. Now on virtual meetings a dog comes into the virtual frame, a kid can be heard. It’s a good thing. But remember to really check in to the mental health of your team. If you hear, “yeah, I’m good,” dig deeper, and model vulnerability.

Jennifer Anderson Redefine Your Boundaries with Intentionality was presented

by Senior Vice President, Humor Resources, McKesson Medical-Surgical Jennifer Anderson. Jennifer helped us appreciate the value in being more proactive, intentional and thoughtful in our personal and professional actions.

Because if we don’t set our own individual boundaries, someone else is going to set them for us. Reflect on what boundaries shifted for you during the pandemic and which of those boundaries will you maintain or revise in a post-COVID world.

Scott Quilty The Humble Leader was presented

by CCO, Enclara Pharmacia, Scott Quilty. Scott encouraged us to practice obsolescence. In other words, be brave enough to move out of the way to let talented team members do what they can do. This is an example of leading from behind. Also, watch out for the rubbish that rolls downhill, but be brave enough to keep it from going further. Build strength for you and your team.

Navigate Your Career with Helpful Advice from Industry Leaders Take-aways from the PWH® Leadership Summit Leadership Panel Discussion During the virtual PWH® Leadership Summit this summer, Midmark sponsored a general session panel discussion entitled “Looking Back, Moving Forward.” President of Share Moving Media and Publisher of the Journal of Healthcare Contracting John Pritchard served as moderator. Pritchard asked a panel of four industry executives to reflect on what they’ve learned as they’ve navigated their careers and what advice they have for Summit attendees. Cris Pellegrino: Get a mentor!

Sue Hulsmeyer: Don’t be afraid to try different things. You are good enough, smart enough, you will figure it out. Believe in yourself.

Elizabeth Day-Curi: Say yes more than you say no. Don’t be afraid to fail. Maybe you won’t hit the mark every time, but you will evolve and learn things. Perfection is a paralyzer.

If you think you have to do everything perfectly, that thought will keep you from advancing. Don’t assume that your opinion or point of view is not valuable.

Pritchard: What about managing up?

Steele: It is hard to manage up. You need to have a relationship and established trust. Otherwise, your ability to manage up falls flat. My attempts were most effective when the person I was managing up with opened the question by asking for feedback. Do it respectively and make sure it is worth the risk.

Hulsmeyer: The trust has to be there.

The person who is higher up has to want to hear the feedback. The higher up in the organization you go, the more filtered the information is so you can manage up in a more protected way. So, you are better protected to deliver truth.

Pellegrino: Reach out to mentors for help and guidance on how to navigate or manage managing up. Carve out time and a safe space for letting your guard down and working out the grievances. Be open to feedback.

You do own your career in terms of having those direct conversations. I use a decisionmaking framework and have a strategy for difficult conversations. If an opportunity aligns with my values and goals, then I say yes to it. If it doesn’t, then I don’t.

I was told, “Chris, you check all the boxes, but we are considering outside talent because we are looking for a fresh perspective.” I pulled my name out of the hat. I would be the square peg in a round hole. By doing that I could become part of the hiring process for the new hire. I learned a lot from that experience. But,

Figure out what your brand is, and theirs, and let that guide your navigation. Volunteer for opportunities offered throughout your organization.

Hulsmeyer: Find balance. It is a tough conversation when someone is impatient for that next role. You don’t want a role before you are ready for it. You need to market yourself within your organizations.

They need to know what your skills are.

Every time you come into work, you are interviewing for the next role that you want. How you come to work and present yourself is part of a hiring decision. Every day is an investment in your next role.

Pritchard: How do you navigate your career, and which part of your career do you own?

Pritchard: We’ve all been passed over for a role, promotion, assignment. What did you learn from that experience?

Day-Curi: A great way to start navigating your career is to network within your

Day-Curi: I thought I was ready, but I didn’t have the really close relationship with my supervisor. He wasn’t clear about what I wanted because I had not made it clear. If you don’t develop relationships and make your aspirations clear, assumptions can be made for you. Supervisors may assume you don’t want to travel or relocate.

Hulsmeyer: How you handle not getting that role is important. Did you brush yourself off and get back at it?

Make sure people are aware of your goal aspirations. Know what you need to do to prepare for that role when it comes around again. It’ll give you a much better chance of getting it.

Pritchard: How has COVID impacted your career aspirations?

Day-Curi: There were lots of ramifications for me and my team. I was on the road a

lot about 70% of the time before COVID. I loved being on the road. It brought a welcomed pause to that. I probably will rethink things before I sign up for travel in the future. But COVID did not change my aspirations. I am actually more aware now of more opportunity.

not in daycare, I wanted to go to the airport just to get some normalcy. Communicate about important calls, who is walking the dog on Monday, who’s picking up kids from daycare, and who’s taking care of parents. I stay caught up by carving out time, even while on vacations.

Pellegrino: Big change personally, but career aspirations did not change.

Tactical piece changes as perspective on necessity to travel has changed. We are doing so much more video conference calls internally and with customers. But those in sales had already been working more remotely.

Steele: I am honestly terrible at it. The best thing that I do is vacation in the mountains, and there is no cell service. So, it offers a forced cutoff. But lines between work and home have blurred. I try to stick with no weekend meetings and cut off at 6. I’ve found myself having to put more boundaries in place.

Hulsmeyer: COVID has changed people.

Folks may view that daily commute as how often do I really need to do that? How often do I really want to travel? But there is a loneliness that can happen when you work remotely. You don’t get that hallway conversation where those quick interactions and decisions can be made.

There is a loss there. I would proceed with caution when considering whether you want to go 100% remote.

Pritchard: What about work-family balance?

Day-Curi: It is not easy. Takes a lot of planning. Sometimes you don’t get it right, but you just roll with it. My husband and I have a joint calendar. We both travel a lot with our jobs. We carve out time with kids where we put cell phones away. We all have deadlines and pressing issues, and it is hard to juggle. But it can be done—takes a lot of planning and dedication to do it.

Pellegrino: I was already working from home, but then my wife was teaching from our dining room table, and the kids were

Hulsmeyer: Create boundaries on your calendar. You give and care for others, but you can’t give when the well is dry. I know we hate the back up of emails on Monday, but it is important to unplug. Give yourself the grace to take time to reengage with family so that you can care for people when you come back to work.

Pritchard: Any advice on how to network within your organization if it is siloed?

Day-Curi: Especially if you are siloed and remote, start with your leadership.

Whoever your supervisor is, ask for help to get access to who you want to network with. I’ve gone to HR to help me get connected or aligned with roles outside my current reach.

Pellegrino: I know someone who took online courses and brought the content back to the broader organization. They scheduled meetings on the subject matter, and after two or three there were a lot of attendees, and it helped that person network.

Pritchard: Should you have a professional mentor?

Steele: It’s very important to have a mentor, and you can have more than one.

A mentor should be able to see you in action to provide guidance and feedback.

But you grow out of mentors sometimes, and it is ok to move on to another one.

Some people hang on to it too long. That mentor needs to get to know you, and you need to prepare for your meetings. Get to know one another, make sure you’re on the same page. What is your parallel narrative? Make sure you are aligned.

Hulsmeyer: Organizations need to train people on how to have certain conversations, including mentorships.

Day-Curi: I am a huge fan of mentoring.

I mentor within and outside of our organization. I am a real huge fan of peer-to-peer mentoring where those in the same role can mentor each other. And I’m a fan of reverse mentoring to get more perspective. Create a board of mentors, internal and external of all ages and all folks you can go to and scrimmage ideas.

They give an alternate point of view and challenge your way of thinking. It helps ensure you determine better outcomes.

On November 17, 2021, at 12:00 pm ET, PWH® will host a webinar entitled Word Choices Emote. This lunch-hour chat with Dr. Danni Green and Vicky Lyle will “go off the reservation” to explore phrases from the “peanut gallery” that can result in some of us “spazzing” when we hear them. The origins and sentiments of many word choices can challenge even the most enlightened. To many, such comments are simply a colloquial saying. Yet to others, they are highly offensive. The “rule of thumb” is that language may cozy-up to a “tipping point” yet should not go overboard.

The goal of this session is to bravely

awaken us to what and how we speak for the purpose of fostering education and awareness bringing us closer together rather than further apart. The only prerequisite is that each of us extend grace through the enlightenment process.

Another Great Match Female Leaders in the Medical Device Industry This issue we spotlight mentee Calie Grey and her mentor Christine Duborg. Calie sought guidance for her relatively new role managing a team of development engineers. Christine had a lot of experience from which to reflect. Both women are grateful to Vice Chair, Mentor Support, PWH® Mentoring Committee Khaki Weber for making a great match. Read below to learn about their relationship.

What was your goal?

As a relatively new manager, I know I still have a lot to learn in terms of my management and leadership skills, so my primary goal with pursuing a mentoring relationship was to learn from the experiences of others.

I have also been working to develop my communication and networking skills with other leaders, and mentoring provides a great opportunity to develop those skills as well.

What is your background?

I joined Zimmer Biomet (previously Zimmer) as a development engineer in 2009 and have held roles of increasing responsibility throughout my career. I began my career providing post market development support for legacy products and worked as both a development engineer and project leader during the development of the Persona Primary Knee System. When Zimmer and Biomet combined in 2015, I moved into our Platform Services organization and became the owner of our global design control processes. Since then, I have worked to globally harmonize our design control requirements across all our design sites, participated on

Coming prepared for mentoring sessions has made our time highly valuable. Previously, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry in both sales and management roles. My roles at GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson and Alcon Laboratories spanned various healthcare specialties and practice/ institution types. I serve as a board member and Internal/External Relations Chair for the Cetronia Ambulance Corp. I also serve as marketing chair for the Parkland Baseball HS Booster Club. Finally, my husband and I co-own Amada Senior Care - Lehigh Valley.

What inspires you to mentor?

What is your background, current company affiliation and position?

Prior to joining Veeva in January 2020 as an account executive and now the sales director in the MedTech vertical, I held roles of increasing responsibility within the healthcare industry over the last 20 years.

I joined Olympus in 2008 leading sales training for its medical business where my responsibilities included educating sales and distributor personnel from North and South America on the safe and effective use of the company's medical device portfolio. Then I transitioned to a strategic position as a product marketing manager in the endoscopy division overseeing some of the company's flagship medical technology solutions.

In wanting to gain more experience on the corporate side of the business, I took on the role of director of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team, leading corporate giving initiatives, community relations and employee engagement across the company’s 40+ locations in the Americas. This led to a role leading the Corporate Integrated Marketing Group with a focus on telling the Olympus story

I love the two-way learning relationship that comes from mentoring. Over the years, I have learned a lot from those whom I’ve mentored, and I enjoy watching them grow in their career!

What have you learned from your Mentee?

Calie has shared some really great perspectives that allow us to brainstorm together to come up with ways to address a challenge.

What has worked with you and your mentee?

Calie comes prepared for our sessions to speak about specific challenges or areas of focus. She sets up the conversation in the beginning which allows us to jump into productive brainstorms together!

Why has the relationship been successful?

The relationship has worked because of Calie! Her preparation, self-awareness and desire to continuously improve serves as the best foundation for a mentoring relationship!

What is your take on the value of mentorship?

I continue to appreciate the conversations that I have with Calie as both our roles have evolved since starting our mentorship. Thank you, Khaki, for matching us up through this program. I highly recommend this type of mentorship program which allows women from different companies and backgrounds to be paired and learn from each other.

HIDA Members Support the Medical Supplies for Pandemics Act

The Health Industry Distributors Association hosted its Washington Summit in June, bringing together more than 60 members and their manufacturer partners to engage with U.S. Senators, House members and staff.

HIDA supply chain executives participated in 80 meetings urging support from legislators for the Medical Supplies for Pandemics Act, which will better prepare the U.S. for public health emergencies.

The measure, which has been introduced in the House (H.R. 3463) and Senate (S. 1693), strengthens the partnership between the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) and commercial distributors.

The legislation would allow for: > Enhanced Public/Private Partnerships: The SNS would partner with commercial distributors to manage inventory and prevent expiration of critical pandemic supplies such as PPE, test kits, and infection prevention products. > Diversified Production: The SNS would work with manufacturers to geographically diversify production sources of medical supplies. > Increased Investments in Surge Manufacturing Capacity: The SNS would work with manufacturers on innovative approaches to ensure there can be enhanced production of supplies during emergencies.

During the summit, Reps. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Richard Hudson (R-NC) discussed bipartisan long-term pandemic policies.

Slotkin, who has a defense and intelligence background, said the U.S. should treat the healthcare supply chain and the national stockpile as matters of national security.

Hudson said the SNS model should be revisited so private companies have greater ability to replenish it.

White House Supply Chain Coordinator Tim Manning told participants that building public-private partnerships was critical. He called for review of government procurement, a new vision for the SNS, more ways to support U.S.-made critical medical products,

and macro policy needs to support those efforts. He applauded the progress the nation has made in combating COVID-19, but noted that until the global pandemic is over, the U.S. pandemic isn’t over.
