Hanley Foundation Boca Brunch Raised Money for Scholarships for Substance Use Disorders

Hanley Foundation hosted the 2nd Annual Brice Makris Brunch on Sunday, December 11 at Boca West Country Club to a sold out crowd of more than 250 guests. Foundation Board Member John Makris and his wife Michelle chaired the event that honored their son, Brice, who tragically passed away two years ago at age 23 from a Fentanyl overdose. “What a powerful and moving event,” said Jan Cairnes, CEO of Hanley Foundation. “The proceeds from this brunch will make a real difference in the lives of people suffering from substance use disorders. We could not be more grateful to all who attended and supported this cause.”

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the inaugural ‘Brice Makris Community Spirit Award,’ giv-

Boynton Beach to Flush Water Lines with Chlorine

The City of Boynton Beach will temporarily modify the disinfection process utilized to treat its drinking water from Thursday, January 5 through Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Customers may notice a slight chlorine taste, or odor, in their tap water. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects. Those sensitive to the taste, or odor, of chlorine, can place an open container of drinking water in the refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate. Users of home dialysis ma-

chines, owners of tropical fish and managers of stores, and restaurants with fish and shellfish holding tanks are advised to seek professional advice as the method for removing chlorine residuals differs from removing chloramine residuals from tap water.

This is a preventative maintenance process in order to maintain the City’s high standard of clean water distribution. During this period, the City’s drinking water distribution system will continue to meet all Federal and State water quality standards.

POSITIVE LIVING

Learn to Work With Varied Possibilities!

There are people who are so limited only to their own ideas, that they never consider other points of view, nor other reasonable possibilities of solving a problem, beyond what they alone accept to be the only possible solution.

True achievers, however, never confine themselves in this manner. From the start they realize that if plan A doesn’t work, let’s look at other alternatives before giving up their attempts of creating something good, or applying a new methodology or technology to what is being tested!

The insecure individual, who operates with tunnel vision, prefers to

argue, to complain, to discredit, and to do countless more inconsequential things, instead of considering suggested alternatives while there is yet time to accomplish what can bring the desired results.

Through the years I’ve come to recognize that there can be multiple answers to one single question without any reply contradicting the other. A viewpoint depends on the angle though which a person is observing a situation, even if several other persons are attempting the same from the perspective through which they analyze what they contemplate. Most often, it’s through the contribution of sev-

eral that a proper conclusion is best reached, on account of the varied perspectives that construct the fuller picture!

Some people, insisting on their single, chosen way of doing things, can spend countless hours, or even days without success, and still dismiss other suggestions to what can be a better way – indeed the most decisive manner of leading that task into the desired resolution!

I’m convinced that many times it’s personal pride that blocks one’s pathway to genuine accomplishment; it’s a person’s insistence in pursuing a road already travelled without ever leading

FAITH

to the sought destination.

Sadly, some individuals become defensive when their suggestion is rejected and their way is not attempted. They label the detractors with many uncomplimentary classifications, considering defiance as the primary attitude being shown by the true visionaries.

Yet, such is hardly the case because no one is limited to just one way of doing things, nor one single manner of addressing any situation. Issues need to be understood from the inside out, as well as from top to bottom. Those who limit their observation will never attain a satisfactory understanding, if any at all!

Business And The Reliability Of The Bible

Recently, while interviewing a job candidate, I asked about the applicant’s view of the Bible. She told me, “I believe the Bible is inspired by God, but certainly not all true.” That was a deal breaker for me since the focus of my organization is to equip business leaders for modeling biblical principles in the marketplace.

The Bible itself stakes a strong claim to its authority and reliability, declaring, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Either every word of the Bible is true, or you make yourself a god by overruling some of the teachings in God’s Word.

Some time ago, Hank Hanegraaff of Christian Research Institute suggested the acronym, MAPS, to help explain the reliability of the Bible. The M stands for Manuscripts. When I visited the site of the Dead Sea Scrolls, I learned about

the meticulous process the scribes used for copying the Holy Scriptures. If they made any mistake, they immediately burned the scroll.

Historians gauge the validity of a manuscript based on the number of manuscripts and the time span between the originals and earliest manuscripts. The Bible has stronger support than any other classical writings, including those of Greek writers and thinkers. “The rules of the Lord are true and righteous altogether” (Psalm 19:9). Historical manuscript evidence overwhelmingly proves biblical reliability.

The second letter in Hanegraaff’s MAPS acronym, A, stands for Archaeology. Sir William Ramsay was trained as an archaeologist. A skeptic of the Bible, Ramsay set out to disprove the historical reliability of the book of Luke. However, he became a follower of Christ as he saw archaeology confirm the historical statements in the Gospel of Luke, one

after another, to be accurate.

Recently, archaeologists discovered King Manasseh’s palace, proving his existence. Through the years, many skeptical archaeologists have been proven wrong when they have disputed the Bible. Psalm 18:30 teaches, “This God – his way is perfect; the word of the?Lord?proves?true.” God’s Word is trustworthy and true, as archaeologists who have tried to prove otherwise has learned.

The third letter in the acronym, P, stands for Prophecy. Among the remarkable attributes about the Bible are the predictions made hundreds of years before they came true. Before Jesus’ birth, prophets made 55 predictions about the Messiah, including the Savior would be born to a virgin in Bethlehem and He would be crucified. God said, “I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my?words that the?prophet?speaks in my name”

(Deuteronomy 18:19), God’s Word has proven itself to be reliable.

The final letter in Hanegraaff’s series is S for Statistics. A professor, Peter Stoner, worked with 600 students to figure out what the probability would be of just eight prophecies of Jesus being fulfilled. The result is one in one hundred quadrillion. The probability of 55 predictions being true is beyond calculation.

Jesus said to Peter, “Go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours” (Matthew 17:27). Eyewitnesses watched Peter do what Jesus asked. The odds of catching a fish with a specific coin is impossible. Statistics prove that the Bible is reliable because it is God’s Word. We can trust its wisdom to lead us we carry out our daily work responsibilities as well.

Planning To Start The New Year Well

“Out with the old, and in with the new.” Even though hysteria diminished over the coronavirus – commonly known as COVID-19 – the year that soon will pass had many reasons for causing us stress and anxiety. So, once again when 2023 arrives, many of us will look back on the past year and shout an enthusiastic, “Good riddance!”

Which brings us to the new year. What will make it better for us than the last? Certain things are beyond our control – like pandemics, economic turmoil, wars, storms, and other natural disasters. But there are many things we can control, or at least positively affect our careers and lives in general. The decisions and choices we make during the coming year will go far in shaping how things turn out.

These last few days of the calendar year often are times for evaluation and introspection. “What went well?” “What could I/we have done better – or not at all?” “Did I make significant strides professionally? How about my private life – am I a better person today than I was when the year started?”

You can probably add similar questions to the list. There is nothing wrong with that if we do not look back for too long. Because the past is fading out of reach; what we do have is the present, along with our hopes, intentions, and dreams for the future. We should start looking ahead, formulating plans, goals, and objectives for the next 12 months.

We might focus on career advancement, building our business, growing

market share, increasing profits, or developing new product lines. The list seems endless. But what about our growth and development as individuals, especially if we are followers of Jesus Christ? That requires thoughtful planning as well. Let me suggest some wisdom we can glean from the Bible about that:

Grow in relationship with God. When asked about the greatest of all commandments, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). Can you say you are doing that right now? Would you consider it a worthy goal?

Grow in relationship with others. Right after declaring the greatest commandment, Jesus said, “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these” (Mark 12:31). Again, how well are you doing this? What might you do to improve in this area?

Make Christ the foundation of all you do. It is common even for people who profess faith in Jesus to “compartmentalize” Him, to let Him into certain areas but not others. True faith makes Him Lord of every area of our lives. “For in [Jesus Christ] we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

Seek to better understand and apply the Word of God. I did. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Boynton Beach to Reinstate Police Athletic League Basketball Program

The City of Boynton Beach, with support from the City’s Recreation and Parks Department, the Boynton Beach Police Department and the Bill Tome Foundation, will once again offer local teens (ages 15-18) the opportunity to play basketball through the co-ed Boynton Beach Police Athletic League program held at the Ezell Hester, Jr. Community Center (1901 N. Seacrest Blvd.). Sign-ups will take place on Thursday, January 12, 2023 (6:00 pm – 7:30 pm).

Space is limited to the first 60 teens to register. There is no cost to participate in this three-month long program.

Practices and games will take place on Thursday evenings. Sponsorship opportunities are available, with funds utilized to help support the program.

Bill Tome, previously a longtime Officer with the Boynton Beach Police Department and a recently named Reserve Officer,

originally founded the Boynton Beach Police Athletic League in 1994 and has been an advocate to help inner city, at-risk youth in school and with after-school programs. Due to a lack of funding, the program ended in 2011. At the recent request of Boynton Beach City Manager Dan Dugger, Mr. Tome came out of retirement to reinstate the program.

“The PAL program will provide the opportunity for teens to view Police Officers as a mentor or coaching figure; someone they can trust and ask for life advice,” said Dugger. “It will provide structure, discipline and serve as an opportunity to change the course of teens’ lives for the better.”

PBA Announces New Engineering Program

In fall 2023, Palm Beach Atlantic will launch its Bachelor of Science in Engineering program, reflecting a robust job market for engineers and a growing number of students seeking engineering education within a Christian worldview.

“All the pieces are in place,” said Dr. Fred Browning, professor of physics, who has led the development of the new engineering curriculum. It’s a challenging major of 130 credit hours, offering four concentrations: computer engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics and general engineering.

“We’re getting a lot of inquiries and a lot of enthusiasm from prospective engineering students,” said Dr. Robert Lloyd, dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He expects more than 20 students to enroll as freshmen engineering majors in the fall. In preparation, two classrooms are being revamped to become engineering labs.

Prospective students will need strong math skills, as they’ll “start right off with Calculus 1,” said Browning. In their first semester they’ll also take Introduction to Engineering, along with general education classes. The second semester will add a prototyping design class, using computer aided design and 3D printers.

The four-year curriculum will emphasize hands-on work and group projects, Browning said, with a two-semester senior design course as capstone. “Employers are looking for students with that kind of expe-

rience,” he said, noting that in recent years Palm Beach County’s booming economy has attracted numerous firms needing graduates from STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs.

PBA’s engineering grads will be wellrounded, Lloyd said, with a program “embedded in a liberal arts university” and taught in small classes by professors integrating their Christian faith into their teaching. One of those classes in particular, Engineering Seminar, will tackle subjects such as ethics and how one’s faith impacts design and purpose.

In the sophomore year, key classes will include physics and chemistry, with the upper-level engineering courses beginning in the junior year. As students work their way up through the curriculum of this new major, the university will expand its faculty with new hires in engineering. In addition, Lloyd and Browning have established a collaborative relationship with nearby Florida Atlantic University, so that PBA students might take some very specialized courses at the FAU campus.

PBA’s program received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in October 2022. Lloyd credited Browning for his “tenacious and enthusiastic” research and program development leading up to that milestone. “I was just thrilled at how Fred has risen to the occasion on this,” he said, “and I think engineering will be a great success here.”

Resolve to Protect Your Finances and Your Family in the New Year

(StatePoint) After a holiday season spent racking up credit card bills, many Americans consider making financial resolutions in the New Year. However, now is the perfect time to not only reevaluate your saving and spending, but also commit to creating a more holistic financial plan designed to protect your finances and your family.

Consumers are seeking stability and preparedness in today’s uncertain economic environment, according to a recent Consumer Sentiment Tracker study by Lincoln Financial Group. With ongoing inflation and market volatility, 56% of respondents cited protection from risk as being most important to them. When it comes to thinking about their finances, people said they have the greatest interest in protecting their family (39%) followed by their income (26%).

“Our research reinforced the importance of financial solutions that can help consumers navigate through market cycles and protect their loved ones,” said David Berkowitz, president, Lincoln Financial Network, Lincoln Financial’s wealth management business. “People are not only concerned about having enough to pay their bills, but also saving for retirement and preparing for the unexpected. It’s important to have a well-rounded finan-

cial plan that can address those risks, protect assets and create positive outcomes for today’s families.”

To achieve a stronger financial future, don’t neglect your finances in 2023 — instead, add a little TLC (Talk, Learn, Commit). Resolve to create a robust financial plan using these three tips from Lincoln Financial:

1. Talk about it. Financial conversations play a crucial role. Be transparent with your loved ones about financial priorities so you can set expectations and work toward your shared financial goals. Initiate ongoing dis-

cussions to stay on track with everything from saving for retirement to paying for a long-term healthcare event, which can happen suddenly and be very costly. Also, consider talking to a financial professional who can help identify solutions that best meet your individual needs, as well as drive better outcomes. Lincoln’s research found those who work with financial professionals are more likely to prioritize retirement savings (26% vs. 10%).

2. Learn more about tax-deferred investments. Life insurance can be more than just

Resolving to Get in Shape in 2023?

(StatePoint) While you may want to tone your abs, glutes and triceps in the new year, there’s one often-overlooked area of the body that deserves your attention too: your feet!

“A lot of people hit the gym or dust off their home exercise equipment in January,” says Danielle Butto, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “But without proper precautions, a new exercise routine can cause foot and ankle injuries that could sideline you just as you’re hitting your stride.”

According to ACFAS, here’s what to know as you follow through on your resolution to get fit:

Common Injuries

• Don’t play through the pain of an ankle sprain. Avoiding treatment can not only cause further damage to the ligaments which may take much longer to heal or possibly require surgery, but you may be overlooking a more serious injury -- a stress fracture.

• A stress fracture may feel like an ankle sprain at first, but you’ll notice additional warning signs, such as swelling without bruising, and pain even during normal activities or when touching the area. If you have any of these symptoms, have your foot and ankle evaluated by a foot and an-

kle surgeon as soon as possible.

• Pain or swelling around your Achilles tendon after a workout could be indications of Achilles tendonitis. Untreated, a stretched or strained Achilles tendon may worsen over time, leading to stiffness and fatigue in your injured leg. Worse yet, untreated Achilles tendonitis could result in a ruptured tendon requiring surgery and a rehabilitation of several months.

• Heel pain that lasts for more than a day or two, or worsens when you stand after sitting for an extended amount of time, may be plantar fasciitis. This common condition is a result of inflammation of the tis-

a death benefit, with some types of policies offering income replacement for unforeseen events. It can also protect your financial security from the impact of taxes, market volatility and longevity. It’s not just for individuals and families either, but businesses too. Also, consider diversifying your portfolio with an annuity, which can provide protected growth and monthly lifetime income to help cover expenses in retirement and ensure you have a stream of income.

3. Commit to maximizing your workplace benefits. Look into supplemental coverages like disability, accident and life insurance that may be available through your employer. Solutions like these protect against unexpected events that can disrupt your ability to provide for your family or drive you into additional debt. If you have an employer-sponsored retirement plan, make sure you are contributing and getting a match, if offered. Tap into any financial wellness tools offered at work to help provide you with an accurate picture of your holistic financial situation and lower stress.

Visit www.lfg.com for more tools and resources.

With a robust plan, you can help ensure a solid financial future for you and your family.

Don’t Forget Your Feet

2. Stretch. Incorporate mobility and stretching into your fitness regimen, particularly before and after workouts.

3. Be footwear aware. Wear properly-fitting athletic shoes that support the arch of the foot, provide heel cushioning and are designed for the exercise in which you’re engaged. These measures can help you avoid plantar fasciitis and neuromas. Wear cotton or nonslip socks to help prevent painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more serious issues, especially if you have diabetes.

sue extending from your heel to your toes. If caught early, your foot and ankle surgeon can recommend at-home conditioning. In late stages, plantar fasciitis is harder to treat and takes longer to resolve.

Prevention Tips

The good news? Many injuries are preventable. Foot and ankle surgeons offer five tips to help you keep your feet and ankles healthy:

1. Be smart. Consider consulting a personal trainer at first to ensure you’re practicing good form, and to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts gradually and safely.

4. Guard against bacteria. Sweaty shoes, public showers, exercise equipment and the pool deck are breeding grounds for fungus, viruses and bacteria. Wear water shoes in public areas, and after workouts, and get your feet clean and dry quickly.

5. Book an appointment. Foot and ankle pain isn’t normal. It signals a problem that needs to be evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a specialist who fully understands this part of the body. To find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, use the “Find a Physician” search tool at FootHealthFacts.org.

“When you exercise, your feet and ankles do a ton of work holding you up and absorbing the shock of each step you take,” says Dr. Butto. “So, as you kick off your new fitness routine, don’t forget to protect them.”

American Heritage Schools Invites Educators to Its Virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” on Jan. 31

American Heritage Schools, the topranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school, invites educators from throughout the country to its virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. EST. From the convenience of their homes, attendees will learn about job opportunities and the benefits of teaching at American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus and Palm Beach Campus.

Viewers will hear directly from the American Heritage Schools President, Dr. Douglas Laurie, about how the Schools’ mentoring program supports educators in their professional growth. They will also earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credit offered by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF) by attending a keynote address given by nationally recognized teacher A.J. Juliani, founder of Adaptable Learning, on the importance of adaptability in the classroom.

Educating students is hard work. It was before the pandemic, and it has continued to challenge all teachers, coaches, administrators and parents. Going from in-person teaching to remote learning and then to a hybrid approach, educators have seen the need for flexible curriculum and instruction. Juliani’s Keynote builds on the best of what educators have done for years: adapt their instruction to meet the needs of their students.

Juliani serves as faculty for the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PLN) and is the former Director of Learning and Innovation for Centennial School District. As a curriculum coordinator, tech director, English teacher, football coach, and K-12 instructional coach, he has worked towards innovative learning experiences for schools in various roles. Juliani is also an award-winning blogger, speaker, and author of multiple books, including the bestsellers Adaptable, Empower, and Launch.

American Heritage Schools is one of the top four largest private schools in the nation and among the top 20 largest employers in South Florida. It is headed by educators rather than a board of directors and maintains subsidiary departments in-house, such as admissions, human Resources, curriculum development and PR/marketing. The Schools also offer free tuition for employees’ children and salary supplementation for additional roles, including tutoring during the year and teaching at the Summer Institute over the summer.

The Fuller Center Wee Dream Ball Featured an “All Grown Up” Fuller Kid as Speaker

The Fuller Center held its Annual Wee Dream Ball, the organization’s signature fundraiser, on Friday, December 2 at Boca West Country Club. Guest speaker, Diana Capobianco, who attended Fuller Center as a child, spoke about what a difference it made in her life.

“My parents, immigrants from Mexico, found The Fuller Center in 1992 through word of mouth and were given the opportunity to enroll both my sister and me full-time. This was the hardest thing for my mom to do, as she always dreamed of being home with us when we were little; however, she and my dad both needed to work,” said Mrs. Capobianco. “The Fuller Center not only gave my mom and dad the freedom, encouragement, and financial relief to both work and save money, but also gave them the security of knowing that their children would be fed, educated, and cared for, while being provided with experiences we would normally never been able to have.”

Mrs. Capobianco went on to say, “The Fuller Center started a ripple of positive effects throughout my childhood that eventually led to me graduating from college with an undergraduate engineering degree. I got my MBA and landed a great career with American Express, and bought my very first home with my husband Sean in Boca Chase, just behind the Fuller West Campus. We now have two young children of our own who attend the Fuller Center. I always felt safe at this school and wanted my children to have the same wonderful experience that I had, now as a paying parent.”

Event co-chairs Rosa Agentis Feeney and Karen Foreman, along with Special Honoree Gail Wasserman, spoke about how crucial the Fuller Center’s work is, and how each person in the room was helping to make a positive impact on the children and families the Fuller Center serves, as well as positively impacting our

community.

The Wee Dream Ball was an intimate and inspirational evening with beautiful black and white décor with pops of red roses. The live entertainment featured NY NY Dueling Pianos, LED winged ladies, dancing, a luxurious live auction and Gift from the Heart presentation, and delicious cuisine. The evening ended with a lounge-style dessert hour in the library with classics sung by duo Steve and Rhonda Kaplan.

The sponsors were Karen & Jay Foreman, Christine E. Lynn & E. M. Lynn Foundation, Jo Ann & Philip Procacci, Publix Super Markets Charities, Sam and Simone Spiegel Family Foundation, and Schmidt Family Foundation; Empower Sponsors Anidjar & Levine Law Firm, Brotman, Nusbaum, Ibrahim & Adelman, CP Group & BRiC – Boca Raton Innovation Campus, Silvana & Barry Halperin, Bob & Lynne Hart, Leslie & David Kantor, Hiromi & Robert Printz, Sandra & Marvin Rubin, Susie & Mark Tabor, and Eda & Cliff Viner; Dessert Sponsor Boca West Country Club; Luxury Retail Sponsor Saks Fifth Avenue Boca Raton; Magazine Sponsor Margaret Mary Shuff & Boca Raton Magazine; Program Book Sponsor Office Depot; Signage Sponsor FastSigns Boca Raton; Signature Cocktail Sponsor Tito’s Handmade Vodka; Table Décor Sponsor Gucci Boca Raton.

The support and belief in the Fuller Center mission allows the organization to continue embracing, educating, and empowering the hardworking, underresourced families and children of our community – the essential workers ultimately taking care of us, and the workforce behind the workforce.

Fuller Center and supporters remain steadfast in their commitment to turn the tide of generational, economic inequity and make a positive impact in as many lives as they are able, because they know TOMORROW

Fellows represent a mix of political persuasions – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – and come from public

and private schools. Five attend Ivy League institutions, four go to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and 20 are enrolled in state schools. Roughly half of the fellows are studying public policy, political science or history, more than a third are studying economics or business and just under a third are majoring in a STEM field.

Fellows will have meetings with Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, the first Israeli Ambassador to the UAE Amir Hayek, one of the main negotiators in the historic Abraham Accords, Israel’s Head of Economic and Trade Mission to the UAE, the Chief Rabbi of the UAE, numerous high-tech executives, academics, leaders of coexistence projects, and key members of the press and business world.

In Israel, fellows will explore numerous models for coexistence and progress through meetings with FeelBeit Jerusalem organizers, Jaffa’s diverse community members, and educators at Groovetech, a fully immersive center in the Eshkol region that trains students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Fellows will also tour Bethlehem and the Aida Refugee Camp, visit the Gaza border and the Kerem Shalom border crossing, meet with Palestinian and Jewish residents of

the West Bank, and explore the Christian, Muslim and Armenian quarters of the Old City in Jerusalem. In Dubai, fellows will meet with local students and young professionals from around the world who are currently living, working, or studying in Dubai, including professors and students from the NYU Abu Dhabi Program, considered a model for coexistence. They will visit the Sheik Muhammed Center for Cultural Understanding and Global Village to discover how 80 different cultures cooperate in a shared economic space.

The fellows bring unique perspectives and insight to the officials they will be meeting. One fellow is chief of staff to the vice president of programming for the Hispanic Student Association and president of the First Generation Leadership Program, another is the founder of FroshVote, which mobilized thousands of students to vote and was featured on the Today Show, another grew up in Daegu, South Korea and, as a Black woman, explains she is dedicated to working to unite Jewish and Black communities and another was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico and competes in triathlons. Other fellows include a former student government senator for LGBTQ+ Affairs and president of his school’s Model UN Team, a fellow who hopes to commission into

the U.S. Coast Guard as part of the JAG Corps to promote international cooperation, a member of the Black and Jewish Fellowship, a biology and bioethics major researching how to improve healthcare, a Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research Fellow, vice president of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for their school’s Panhellenic Association, and a member of the Deans’ Advisory Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

“Since the historic Abraham Accords were signed, the Middle East landscape has been changing on a weekly and daily basis with greater economic, security, technological, medical, and policy advances and cooperation than ever before. ICC is excited to provide the next generation of American leaders access to experts on the front lines who can engage these future changemakers in robust conversations about Israel’s new place in the Middle East, as well as the challenges that remain,” stated ICC CEO Jacob Baime. “This immersive experience will help build a diverse network of thoughtful, intelligent, and successful leaders who can help shape the future of the U.S.-Israel relationship. We know they will return to their campuses and communities with a better understanding of the changing Middle East and a desire to share their passion with others.”

Cultural Council for Palm Beach County Hosts Free Exhibition by Artist Serge Strosberg

Home Run Franchises Launches Ownership Incentive for Titus Center for Franchising Graduates

In its dynamic Donald M. Ephraim Family Gallery, the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County will present another thought-provoking exhibition: Veni, Vidi, Vici by international portrait artist Serge Strosberg, January 16 through February 18, 2023. The exhibition is an artistic exploration of the life and influence of Henry Morrison Flagler, the founder of Standard Oil and the Florida East Coast Railroad, as well as the cities of Miami and Palm Beach.

Strosberg takes Flagler as captured in portraits and vintage photographs provided by the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, and reimagines him in a modern context, costumed in contemporary vibrant patterns and colors by Lilly Pulitzer or Maus and Hoffman, while a frieze composed of train tracks borders the works. Descriptions of the historical images were written by popular Worth Avenue tour guide Rick Rose, author of Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America’s Legendary Resort Town.

“The captains of industry from the Gilded Age seemed to have a fas-

cination for Ancient Rome, Greece and Europe, which constructed infrastructure such as roads, aqueducts, and monuments while also building economic empires,” explains Strosberg. “Henry Flagler transformed Florida (which was still mostly swamps in the late 1800s) into a flourishing state by building a railroad going all the way to Key West, plus monumental hotels and cities, ‘conquering’ this ‘inhospitable’ land. In fact, it was the monumental bust of Caesar Augustus adorning the entrance of Whitehall at the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum that inspired this exhibition.”

“After all, Palm Beach today is an ultra-wealthy enclave, a modern Rome separated from the rest of the world by an intracoastal where workers do not reside and only an exclusive crowd now lives. It is also decadent and surreal in a world that is quickly evolving,” adds the artist.

The exhibition Veni Vidi, Vici by Serge Strosberg is available for free viewing in the Cultural Council’s Donald M. Ephraim Family Gallery Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m., January 16 through February 18, 2023.

Home Run Franchises, a Nashville, Tennessee-based franchisor of four home service franchise brands, announced a new incentive program for graduates of the Titus Center for Franchising at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The incentive program awards a franchise to any graduate or MBA student who demonstrates a passion for franchise ownership and meets the start-up financial requirements (less than $20,000). Recipients do not pay the initial franchise fee, making franchise ownership possible for most graduates by steeply reducing the startup investment.

Home Run Franchises was founded by Thomas Scott, a career franchisor and franchise industry supplier. Scott has helped more than 12,000 people open franchises and has helped grow more than 380 franchise systems over 25 years. Scott founded seven franchise brands. His Home Run Franchises brands specifically target young, Generation Z owners. The brands are Up Closets, Dryer Vent Superheroes, The Lighting Squad and Window Film Squad.

Scott is a member of the Titus Center Advisory Board and provides internships to Titus Center students.

“We believe Generation Z entrepreneurs make the perfect franchise owners. They bring a unique set of skills and drive to the table,” said Scott. “Unfortunately, many franchise companies dismiss these young entrepreneurs, mistakenly thinking they lack skills or financial means. Our in-

centive program allows young entrepreneurs to get started in a life-long career of franchise ownership starting at an early age.”

The Titus Center for Franchising at Palm Beach Atlantic University is the only academic center of its kind in Florida and one of only a few in America. The Titus Center offers academic coursework, internships, job shadowing and training at area franchises. The center, based in the Marshall E. Rinker Sr. School of Business, was established in 2016 through a gift from Ray Titus, founder and CEO of United Franchise Group. Dr. John P. Hayes is the center’s director. The center is dedicated to franchising education for both college students and professionals who want to enter franchising.

“We are so grateful for the service of franchise professionals like Thomas Scott who want to not only spend time with our students, but give them opportunities for ownership. Our program is unique because of generous, forward-thinking people like Mr. Scott,” said Hayes.

The Titus Center is rapidly growing and attracting students who see franchising as a way to blend corporate and entrepreneurial career goals. “The students who are graduating are top-notch and will pioneer the next two decades of growth in franchising,” said Scott. “We’re excited to help professionally develop as many of these students as we can through our new incentive program. It is a unique opportunity that offers a great head start in our industry.”

Boca History Museum schedules Civil War talk and first ‘free fun Saturday’

The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum has scheduled two special events this month. For more information, visit www.BocaHistory.org or call 561395-6766, extension 100T.

To celebrate the opening of the new Boca Raton Brightline Station, the museum will offer free fun Saturdays -- starting on Jan. 7 and continuing the first Saturday of every month during 2023. On each of these special Saturdays, the museum will waive the regular admission fee ($12 adults, $8 students and seniors, free for members and children 4 years old and under)

for all visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is a perfect no-cost opportunity to enjoy the museum’s exciting and interactive exhibits that document the growth and development of Boca Raton from a small farming town to the sophisticated internationally known city it is today.

In addition, on Thursday, Jan. 12, a “Town Hall Talk is scheduled.” The topic for the evening is: “Escape, the Confederacy’s infamous Libby Prison and the Civil War’s largest jail break.”

Award-winning singer-songwriter, dancer, actress and social influencer Montana Tucker will headline a multi-arts “Concert-4-Kindness” Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium at the Florida Atlantic University Student Union on the Boca Raton campus. Tickets range from $10 to $20 and can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or by calling 561-297-6124.

Marilyn and Jay Weinberg are presenting the concert. It was organized and conceived by longtime FAU supporters Bonnie and Jon Kaye of Kaye Communications PR & Marketing.

It will feature Tucker in her first hometown concert, along with dancers, FAU students and various community groups. This will be intermingled with “kindness” cameos by Tucker’s friends in the arts and entertainment industry meant to inspire unity and peace.

“To amplify kindness in South Florida and beyond, I look forward to headlining this concert,” said Tucker. “I hope each of you will help out by bringing all your friends from all walks of life to this incredible program.”

The event will also include performances by the following:

Clarence Brooks, director of dance at FAU, who will perform “Sweet in the Morning,” choreographed by Leni Williams with music by Bobby McFerrin.

BriGuel, the internationally renowned bilingual artistic duo from Spain and New York, who are on a mission to “harmonize humanity” one note, one film at a time. Brianne and Miguel will perform their own music and share award-winning film shorts they created. Both grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, they support Ukrainian displaced persons finding refuge at the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation in Poland.

Florida Singing Sons and Chorale Soleil, a new high school student ensemble, will join forces vo-

cally to cultivate arts-aware youth as leaders of tomorrow.

Nat King Cole Generation Hope, named for their famous father by his twin daughters who live in Palm Beach County, provides a legacy of music education, mentoring and resources for youth with the greatest need and fewest resources. Local students and their mentors will perform instrumental music.

The performers all are donating their talents to support the future Kurt and Marilyn Wallach Holocaust and Jewish Studies building at FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. While serving as the hub for Holocaust and Jewish Studies on campus, the Wallach building will bring together under one roof all multidisciplinary education that focuses on human rights’ education, conflict de-escalation, ethics and diplomacy, leadership training and peacemaking.

The building will also house FAU’s Peace, Justice and Human Rights Center, a university-wide effort that unites scholars, students, practitioners and community leaders engaged in the themes of social justice, human rights and peace and nonviolence. All concert proceeds will be directed into the “Make a Difference Fund” at FAU to support scholarships and programs within the building.

Tucker, who has a total of more than 14 million social media followers combined on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, has opened for icons like Jennifer Lopez, Flo Rida, Ciara and Pitbull. She will perform her popular original song “Be Myself” and show her music video “I’m Not Alone,” also known as “the song that saves lives.” Tucker wrote these songs for her music videos to inspire young people to respect their own and others’ inclusion and diversity.

Extending her message beyond her music, Tucker is using her vast social platform for change. She recently retraced her roots to Poland in an ex-

The speaker, Dr. Robert Watson, is an award-winning author who has published more than 40 books and 200 scholarly articles and essays on topics in political, military and social history. He is also a professor at Lynn University.

“Escape” is the story of one of the worst and deadliest prisons in American history, one where senior Union officers suffered and died in alarming numbers. Located in the heart of the Confederacy’s capital—Richmond—the infamous prison was used for propaganda pur-

poses by southern leaders and took on symbolic significance far beyond that of just a prison.

However, it was also the site of a bold and daring prison break by a group of high-ranking Union officers, an event that captivated the nation, outraged the South, and sparked one of the largest manhunts in American history.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with check-in and refreshments, and the lecture starts at 6:30 pm. It is free for BRHS members and $10 for guests.

Commenting on the upcoming performance, Bonnie Kaye of Kaye Communications Inc., co-chair and sponsor of the event along with her husband, Jon, said:

“As we lose the generations from all backgrounds who bore witness and survived injustice, bigotry and watershed events in history in their lifetime, who better than their grandchildren to stand up and speak out against hate, bullying and discrimination, and advocate for better education and understanding.”

The Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center’s Sandler Center has announced its upcoming exhibition, “Triumph of the Spirit: Jewish Athletes Before, During and After the Holocaust.”

The display, featuring rare and extensive memorabilia of famous Jewish Olympic athletes, opened Jan. 5 at the Judi & Allan Schuman Museum Gallery located at the Levis JCC Sandler Center and will run through Feb. 28, 2023. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Local collector Neil Keller has amassed more than 22,000 sports collectables over a 35-year span by leading a worldwide pursuit of prominent Jewish figures throughout history.

What started out as a purchase of a 1961 Topps Sandy Koufax baseball card in 1987 turned into three-and-a-half-decade passion for collecting rare and personal items of prominent Jewish sports, political and entertainment figures throughout history.

“I have spent the better part of my life tracking down family members and other individuals that

would lead me to discover the stories behind these remarkable athletes,” said Keller. “This has been a fulfilling quest and I am honored to share it.”

The exhibit includes one-of-a-kind items such as autographed family photos that belonged to World Champion Jewish boxer Victor “Young” Perez and well-known boxer Kid Francis, both of whom were ordered to fight other Jewish prisoners to the death. Perez and Francis were internationally known before the war and their items, much to the surprise of Sotheby’s, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Israel, have remained in Keller’s private collection for years. These photos, among so many other rare magazines, trophies, trading cards and never-before seen items, will be on display during this exhibit.

Also featured are track and field athlete Marty Glickman; Fort Lauderdale Swimming Hall of Famer Eva Szekely and Helene Mayer, named by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 100 female athletes of the 20th Century, are all featured in the

exhibition, among many others.

“We are so proud and honored to be able to share this truly unique collection of photographs and memorabilia of Jewish athletes with the community here in Boca Raton,” said Karen Lazar, Arts, Culture & Learning Chair of the Levis JCC Sandler Center.

“We are so fortunate to have unique access to Neil Keller’s remarkable collection. It’s likely the only one of its kind in the world, and the depth and breadth of artifacts and information he has collected about Jewish athletes before, during and after the Holocaust is astounding. The stories of these athletes are inspiring, heartbreaking and truly unforgettable.”

To view the complete Arts, Culture and Learning brochure, visit https://levisjcc.org/culture/. All events take place in-person at the Levis JCC Sandler Center located at 21050 95th Avenue S. in Boca Raton unless otherwise specified. For more information, call 561-558-2520.

Hester’s Triple Double Leads to Overtime Win

FAU Stuns North Texas with Gritty Comeback Win

The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team returned to Rubin Arena for its first game of 2023, facing Eckerd College.

The Sailfish needed overtime but eventually took down a pesky Tritons team due to a 24-point triple-double from Jakob Hester. PBA (6-6, 2-4 SSC) held Eckerd (5-7, 2-4 SSC) to two points in overtime, resulting in an 80-73 win at home.

Hester’s triple-double was the first in PBA’s NCAA Division II era. He converted on 11 of 14 attempts, finishing with 13 rebounds, 10 assists, two blocks, and one steal. His old Anclote HS running mate, Jalen Cooper added 19 points with nine rebounds and three blocks. Will Lee recorded 14 points with eight dimes. Ryan Claflin reached 10 points with six rebounds.

Trent McNair provided a nice spark off the bench with seven points and six rebounds.

The beginning of the game was fast-paced as both offenses operated efficiently. The Sailfish scored 25 points through the first 10 minutes of play, but the Tritons hung with them, scoring 23 of their own. Both teams let it fly from 3-point range and were shooting the lights out, combining for 10 threes on 22 attempts in the first period.

Defenses began to step up as the first period wound down. With the Sailfish leading 34-28, the Tritons went on a 14-3 run where PBA’s shot stopped falling from deep. Lee went coast-to-coast to score a layup at the buzzer to make it 4340 Eckerd at halftime.

A 3-pointer from Lee to open the second half quickly tied the game. The game remained close for the rest of the half as each team traded leads. PBA’s stingy defense stepped up and held the Tritons to 36 percent from the field in the second half.

PBA was positioned to close out the game down the fire. The ‘Fish led 69-68 with 2:26 left to play. An athletic layup from McNair as the shot clock was winding down made it 71-68 with 53 seconds to go. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, a Tritons 3-pointer tied the game at 71 with 42 seconds to play. Lee’s go-ahead try was no-good, and Eckerd’s final attempt was blocked by McNair to force overtime.

The Sailfish were ice cold from deep in the second half, shooting 1-for-16 from deep. That’s when PBA relied on the duo of Cooper and Hester to provide points down low.

Overtime started well for the Sailfish. A bucket and a pair free throws from Hester and a layup by Lee made it 77-71 with 3:27 to play. The ‘Fish went on a threeminute scoring drought, but it didn’t matter as baskets from Hester and McNair closed out the 80-73 as PBA took care of business on defense.

The Sailfish won the rebounding battle, 48-37, and outshot the Tritons 47 percent to 40 percent. The ‘Fish finished with 56 points in the paint compared to 28 for EC. PBA scored 14 second-chance points which played a big part in tonight’s game.

PBA traveled down 95 to nearby Lynn University on Wednesday. The game in Boca Raton, Fla. takes place at 7:30 p.m.

The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team had their backs against the wall on Thursday night. North Texas had a 46-37 lead on the Owls with five minutes remaining in a rock fight. Against all odds, on the road against the second-ranked defense in the nation, the Owls closed the game on a 13-0 run to steal a 50-46 victory over last year’s regular-season Conference USA Champions.

The Owls continue their terrific start to the season, now standing at 121 and 2-0 in C-USA play, with a program-record 11-game winning streak. FAU stood at 13th in the NCAA Net Rankings prior to tonight’s game.

FAU has been known for its 3-point shooting this season, and rightfully so – as the Owls entered tonight’s contest 10th in the nation in made threes per game and 22nd in 3-point percentage. This game was the opposite; a total defensive slugfest, as FAU shot only 3-of-23 from long range, yet still found a way to win.

Alijah Martin finished a layup and got fouled for the 3-point play to pull FAU within 46-40 with under four minutes to play. The Owls’ defense dug in down the stretch, holding the Mean Green scoreless in the final 5:24. After a clutch Michael Forrest triple, a pair of Johnell Davis free throws made it a one-point game, then a clutch 3-pointer from Bryan Greenlee lifted FAU on top 48-46 with 56 seconds to play.

On the other end, Martin came up with a huge steal to give possession back to FAU. With nine seconds to go, FAU held a 48-46 lead with the Mean Green shooting a one-and-one,

and they missed the front end. Forrest grabbed the rebound and hit two free throws to ice the improbable win for the Owls.

“That was a good old-fashioned rock fight,” FAU head coach Dusty May said. “We’re very proud of our guys’ effort. For both teams to shoot a combined 6-of-45 for three, that means there are a lot of long and tough rebounds. We’re really proud of our guys for staying composed. Our mantra is ‘frame by frame’. When you watch film, there’s possession by possession, play by play and frame by frame. You pause it in milliseconds and ask ‘is that team engaged? Is that team in a stance, anticipating and ready to play’? For about 39 and a half minutes, our guys were as locked in on the defensive end as you could be. North Texas is an elite defensive team themselves, they’re physical and aggressive. Our guys responded. Especially for us, being a team that’s known as being skilled and offensive minded, for us to build a win like this is a testament to what we are capable of moving forward.”

Hubbard named C-USA Freshman of the Week

After leading the Owls to their second Conference USA win and ninth overall victory of the season last week against North Texas, Florida Atlantic women’s basketball freshman guard Aniya Hubbard was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday. The honor marks the second career nod for Hubbard after being named CUSA Freshman of the Week on Dec. 19, as well as the third weekly honor for the Owls this season.

The Hoover, Alabama native had another career week, leading FAU to its second C-USA victory of the season in a 6661 win over North Texas. Hubbard scored

a career-best 23 points, shooting 56 percent (10-of-18) from the field and 50 percent (1of-2) from 3-point range. She also added a career-high five steals and tied a career-best five assists, in addition to collecting a pair of rebounds in the win. Through two CUSA contests, Hubbard ranks second in CUSA in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game, and field goal percentage, shooting 58.6 percent.

Next, the Owls will head out on their first C-USA road trip of the season on Thursday, January 5 as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on the UAB Blazers. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET inside Bartow Arena.

Cooper Earns SSC Defensive Player of the Week for Second Straight Week

Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball’s Jalen Cooper was named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday.

Cooper has continued his stellar sophomore season with two strong performances this week. The Anclote HS product began the week with 19 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks against Tampa on Thursday. The performance tied a PBA DII-era record for blocks in a single game.

The Holiday, Fla. native helped lead the ‘Fish to an overtime win against Eckerd on Sunday. Cooper recorded another 19 points and nine rebounds, swatting three Triton shots.

It is the first time in PBA men’s basketball history that a single player has won a conference player of the week award two weeks in a row.

The Sailfish travel to Lynn to face the Fighting Knights on Wednesday. The game in Boca Raton, Fla. takes place at 7:30 p.m.
