IMMEDIATE OCCUPANCY!—Holland Drive Industrial Park The Preserve

Danburg Management is on a mission. We live, work and play here in Boca Raton and there is truly no place else we’d rather be. Sure, you may have the need to hit the slopes in Aspen, see a show in New York, or do some shopping in Paris. But except for a few occasional diversions, why would you ever want to leave Boca? Our contribution is to provide a great business environment at our premier Boca Raton properties. Peninsula Corporate Center provides Class-A storm-ready office space for users of 354 to 2,600 square feet. Boca Industrial Park consists of six distribution/manufacturing/showroom buildings targeting tenants from 5,400 to 60,000 square feet. The Preserve at 7700 Congress is a campus style office park with spaces from 498 to 4,000 square feet overlooking the Yamato Scrub Environmental Preserve, and One Boca Commerce Center is a two-story office building with lake views. And all are seconds from I-95 at the Congress Avenue Interchange.

Boca Industrial Park

But what can we do for the contractor who needs a small office and equipment storage or a manufacturer’s rep who needs an office and inventory storage? Until now, you may have had to travel as far as Deerfield or even Pompano. For you, Danburg Management presents Holland Drive Industrial Park featuring warehouse bays of 1,108 to 2,145 square feet with 15 to 25 percent office finish, storm rated overhead doors and impact glass. Spaces are now available for immediate occupancy, rates start at $1,500 per month and best of all, you’ll never have to leave Boca.

To find our more about these properties, please contact Ken Silberling at 561.997.5777 ext. 27.

All in the family W

hen life gets overwhelming, family is the glue that holds me together – I don’t know where I’d be without mine! Anyone who feels the same will appreciate this month’s Family Issue, dedicated to all things relative (and relatives). We’re excited to reveal the winners of our second annual Hottest Husbands contest (Better By the Dozen, page 60). Boca Raton wives certainly adore their hubbies – their responses doubled last year’s! The final selections were not easy, but in the end we think you’ll agree we made great choices! Speaking of “hot”, you won’t want to miss our exclusive interview with Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian (Sister Act, page 48), which takes you behind the scenes of one of this country’s zaniest families, and highlights the sisters’ new Miami-based spinoff show on E! Entertainment Television, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami.

Linda L. Behmoiras

linda@bocaratonobserver.com

Also in this issue, we pay tribute to Superwomen everywhere in Momtourage (page 54), a story that addresses the networking skills and resourcefulness so many mothers exhibit daily in order to keep their family engines humming. Planning a family vacation? You’ll find great options in Get Campy, (page 74), which offers a host of fun activities and diversions for parent and child alike. And we haven’t forgotten about your furbabies! Our feature Happy Tails (page 80) gives you the straight poop (pun intended!) on our area’s best dog parks. In today’s challenging economy, families everywhere are looking for ways to spend their money wisely, and we’d like to share an important tip from our family to yours. We all realize that businesses today have many choices for their print media advertising. In today’s world, accountability means everything. As business owners, you want to spend your advertising dollars wisely. The best way you can do this is to buy “safe media”, or commit your advertising dollars only to magazines like The Boca Raton Observer, whose circulation is audited. Having audited circulation means that an independent national auditing agency, (in our case, the Audit Bureau of Circulations) verifies the amount and the actual readers we mail our magazines to each month. The Audit Bureau of Circulations is known as the gold standard of media audits. Many prestigious national, regional and local magazines are members of ABC, such as In Style Magazine, and O, Oprah Magazine. Instead of relying on an empty promise about circulation, on bulk “curbside” distribution, or on fictitious newsstand sales, ABC verifies that we actually direct mail our magazine where we say we do. ABC verifies a magazine’s circulation so that businesses know exactly who is seeing their important message. To learn more about the benefits of purchasing only audited media, please visit the Web site buysafemedia.com. Finally, The Boca Raton Observer is proud to announce that this month we’ve won Florida Magazine Association awards for “Best Theme Issue” and “Best Service Feature.” This is only the beginning: We promise to keep bringing you the award-winning quality magazine you deserve! In the meantime, enjoy spending quality time with your family and get ready for a fabulous season ahead. Best,

Reality Check The show’s typical histrionics began early for Koegel, who broke up with his girlfriend Danielle during the first episode. “We were already on our way out,” he recalls. “I didn’t want to be seen as the relationship-guy who missed out on the fun.” And while he says the show was a blast, he admits having 15 lensmen capturing your every move can be, um, awkward. “It took me about three weeks to get comfortable,” he explains. “If you’re not honest about something, it’s going to come out.” He Wants his MTV: Cast Member Christian “CJ” Koegel

On Thin Ice In yet another stellar, only-in-South-Florida moment, former U.S. figure-skating champion Nicole Bobek, 31, was arrested in Tequesta for being part of an extensive methamphetamine ring that weekly distributed more than $10,000 worth of the drug. Ack Nicole Bobe cording to the Sun-Sentinel, Bobek was extradited to New Jersey, where she was released upon posting a $200,000 bond. It’s not the former athlete’s first brush with the law: In 1994 she was placed on probation after pleading guilty to a home-invasion charge.

Got corpses? Fans of cable shows like HLN’s Nancy Grace and CNN’s Larry King Live will recognize Dr. Joshua Perper, the forensic pathologist with the Romanian accent and misshapen head (dropped as a child, a blood clot thickened part of his skull). When there’s an unsolved death, Perper, Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County, goes to work. Perper moved to Broward in 1994 after 12 years as a Pittsburgh coroner, and he’s since performed high-profile autopsies on famous people such as model Krissy Taylor, who died of bronchial asthma, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, who died from ephedra use and actress Anna Nicole Smith, whose death was caused by a mix of sleeping pills and prescription drugs. He’s a frequent news pundit for other highly publicized cases, including the Caylee Anthony and Jett Travolta deaths. “We have a public obligation of explaining what are the findings, and how we arrive at those findings,” says Perper, who earned degrees in law and medicine from Hebrew University and forensic pathology from Johns Hopkins University. Golden Arches If eyes are the windows to the soul, brows are the frames, explains Anastasia Soare, a celebrity eyebrow stylist in town recently extolling the virtues of quality arches. Over-plucked brows make a face appear washed out, while bushy brows look angry (and don’t get her started on the uni-brow). The right contour, on the other hand, works wonders. According to Soare, the key to perfectly shaped, symmetrical brows lays in her secret “golden proportion technique,” which combines elements of math, architecture and technical art. “This brings harmony to the face,” explains Soare, whose clients include Madonna and Oprah Winfrey. Need a lift? The Brow Studio in Nordstrom at Town Center at Boca Raton performs Soare’s technique ($30 per session). Or – if you dare – try the do-it-yourself kit. Behind Candy Bars oddball

You know life is mundane when Tijuana Mama Sausage becomes the highlight of your existence. This and other munchies are all the rage among fussy Broward and Palm Beach County jailbirds, who, tired of mystery casserole, cornbread and jello, demanded better food – and got it. Rather than telling convicts to stick their orders where the sun don’t shine, a new snack system has been implemented, and jails now offer Cheetos, Ramen Noodles and peanut butter cookies waiting to be devoured by the counties’ finest pimps, pickpockets and car thiefs. Prisoners pay for the grub with money sent by friends and family. Apparently, they’ve been hungry. In just the first three months of this year, they forked over $948,000 for the fattening treats. ome husbands and wives imagine working together would be a nightmare, but authors Deborah and Joel Shlian consider it good medicine. They should know. They’re doctors. “We’ve always wanted to do everything together,” Deborah says. And they have. They attended the same Baltimore high school, though sparks didn’t fly until they reunited at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Four days after meeting up again, Joel proposed. “We got married six weeks later because we were in school and had one free weekend,” Deborah recalls. After graduation, they practiced at Kaiser Permanente for a decade before

24

joining the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where Joel was a professor and Deborah the Medical Director of Student Health. While there, Deborah’s boss urged her to get an MBA. Joel joined his wife and, after receiving their degrees, they founded Shlian & Associates, a medical-management consulting firm. In 1996, the couple moved their company to Boca Raton to be closer to their parents. While producing journal articles, they were hired by Art Ulene, NBC Today show’s first medical expert. Bit by the media bug, they realized they enjoyed writing as a team. They pitched a nonfiction book analyzing health maintenance organizations in the ’80s, when they were prevalent only on the West Coast. Ironically, according to Deborah, “Our publisher said peo-

ple on the East Coast would never know what HMOs were.” The couple had better luck with fiction, opting for Robin Cook-style medicalmystery thrillers, and soon published Double Illusion, about a baby thief. The book received positive reviews from the Los Angeles Times, and the Shlians followed it up with Wednesday’s Child. Their most recent book, Rabbit in the Moon, won a Gold Medal in Genre Fiction by the Florida Book Awards. Today, Deborah and Joel divide their time between writing and running their company. They’re debating whether to write a Rabbit in the Moon sequel or publish a fresh thriller. Meanwhile, Deborah’s latest effort, Dead Air, which she wrote with a UCLA colleague, will be released in December. O

Best of the Wurst Sacha Baron Cohen’s Brüno Is Offensive, Outrageous – And Worth Seeing!

Cohen provides very sophisticated humor … for the seventh grade – and many of us still love it. Think of America’s love affairs with Jerry Lewis and even Pinky Lee! But he also has a spot-on eye for targets worthy of ridicule.

Rated R. Includes vulgar language, nudity and strong sexual content.

here are times when political correctness and good taste become uninteresting, overly cautious and banal. At such times, the foul, intentionally juvenile humor of a Sacha Baron Cohen becomes irresistible, if not downright infectious, and the world is a better place for it. A genuine belly laugh, no matter at whose expense, can be good for the soul.

ternational celebrity. During this odyssey, the phallic displays and references make Pompeii look like a medieval cloister.

Cohen’s new film, Brüno, is, quite simply, an outrageous, deft, droll and thoroughly offensive work (how lucky can we get?). It is soul food for the vulgar in us all – for the first 20 minutes or so. And then it becomes repetitive, predictable, childish and boring. This is a total Cohen effort – no one else in it is important.

This picture is a classic example of one man’s meat (if you see the film, you’ll get my pun) being another man’s poison. Some of the send-ups are truly hilarious, and Cohen plays the Teutonic flamboyance to perfection. The wardrobe inventions, the sexual innovations and some of the dialogue are all sidesplitting. Then, there are the less-than-sidesplitting fallbacks like, “Austria’s two greatest celebrities, Brüno and Hitler,” along with some pretty embarrassing African-American shtick involving a baby (hey, there, Madonna) smuggled from Africa in a carton on a plane.

Big Love Poignant Pages From The Lives Of Parents And Children

By Tyler Jett

Bill Cosby once wrote, “No matter how calmly you try to referee, parenting will eventually produce bizarre behavior, and I’m not talking about the kids.” These books are a tribute to the unconditional love of parents, who often sacrifice their own sanity to raise upright men and women.

All Over but the Shoutin’ By Rick Bragg “This is a place where grandmothers hold babies on their laps under the stars and whisper in their ears that the lights in the sky are holes in the floor of heaven,” writes Pulitzer-Prize winner Rick Bragg about his hometown of Piedmont, Ala. “This is a place where the song Jesus Loves Me has rocked generations to sleep, and heaven is not a concept, but a destination.” Bragg has provided a voice to America’s poorest people for years, saying those living in the worst circumstances are the most honorable. His opinion is based on his upbringing in Piedmont, one of the poorest cities in America. All Over but the Shoutin’ tells of the 28

struggles that accompany poverty and small-town life, but moreover pays homage to his mother who, despite living with an alcoholic husband, inspired her son to climb the career ladder from local reporter to New York Times feature writer.

Home Game By Michael Lewis He’s written about his life as a bond salesman in the ’80s (Liar’s Poker), the entrepreneurial culture in Silicon Valley after the Internet’s emergence (The New New Thing) and the success of the Oakland A’s, despite spending less than their competition (Moneyball). Now, Michael Lewis tackles fatherhood and challenges stereotypical dad

behavior. Lewis, a father of three, writes that he didn’t “feel” the way he was told fathers should feel and didn’t see the point in doing things fathers are supposed to do. For instance, he punishes his daughters by eating cake in front of them without letting them have a bite, but then wonders if he just screwed up his kids for life with his discipline. On paper, Lewis appears to be a father without a clue but, in reality, he is an honest, hilarious father without a clue.

a year is crippling. People cope with grief in unique ways. Christopher Buckley, a renowned political satirist, chooses – not surprisingly – humor. In his memoir, Buckley, author of Thank You for Smoking, lampoons Patricia, his socialite mother, and William, his father and founder of National Review. For instance, Buckley reveals that William tried to negotiate luggage fees when checking in for a flight and refused to pay more than $9 for a bottle of wine. Buckley also examines what it’s like to watch your parents lose their independence to age. (Both parents lived past their 80th birthdays.) Patricia’s body suffered after four hip replacements while William’s mind dulled, sometimes even asking to dine with people who had already died.

Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace By Ayelet Waldman In a piece for the New York Times, Ayelet Waldman wrote that she loved her husband more than her kids. Now, to the chagrin of thousands of women who sent her letters saying she should lose custody of her children, Waldman has released a mothering book. Her book is an attack on the idea of the mod-

30

T h e B o c a R at o n Ob s e r v e r

ern mom – the woman who focuses her attention on her children (but not too much or that would be controlling), keeps them in line (but not too much, they won’t be able to think for themselves) and feeds them healthy food (so long as it’s not too expensive, because you have to pay for college after all). Waldman argues that, as long as you love your kids and don’t “damage them in any permanent way,” you are doing just fine.

The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother By James McBride Being the son of Rachel McBride Jordan (formerly Rachel Shilsky), a white Polish immigrant and Orthodox Jew who converted to Christianity, and Rev. Andrew McBride, a black man from Harlem who died of lung cancer when his kids were young, left James McBride a troubled youth. He struggled to understand his racial identity growing up and dropped out of school. Through his writing, James comes to grips with his place in the world and honors his mother for her courage and strength. The book alternates between James’ story and a first-person account of Rachel’s. His mother grew up in Virginia, worked at her father’s grocery store and was forbidden to socialize

with gentiles. Rachel did not like the confinement of America’s social structure in the ’40s and ’50s and refused to bow to racial pressures – marrying two black men and mothering 12 mixed-race children.

Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons By Tim Russert In response to Big Russ and Me, the late Tim Russert’s 2004 tribute to his father, Russert received more than 60,000 letters from readers sharing stories about their own fathers. Those letters inspired Russert to write a second book. Wisdom of Our Fathers is comprised of Russert’s experiences as a father and son, as well as some conversations Russert recalled having with famous people (like Maria Shriver) about memories of their fathers. But, above all else, Russert’s book is about the relationships between average Americans and their fathers. One son speaks of going to a New York Giants game with his dad and how his dad had two extra tickets, but refused to scalp them for a profit, instead charging face-value to another father and son so they could share a similar experience. It’s this type of subtle gesture that makes dads stand out – and it’s why we love them. O

Wing Men Counting Crows Comes To Bayfront Park Amphitheater

F

ans of the Counting Crows will be happy to know the band, so popular in the ’90s, will perform new songs and classics at Miami’s Bayfront Park Amphitheater on August 18th. The group was conceived when singer Adam Duritz and guitarist Dave Bryson met in San Francisco. The duo began as an acoustic group but eventually bulked-up their lineup to become an alternative band. Before signing with Geffen Records in 1993, the band created demos containing many songs later featured on their studio albums, including the breakout hit Mr. Jones. In spite of members’ wishes to be a band focused primarily on live performances, their debut album, August and Everything After, skyrocketed to No. 4 on the Billboard 200 when the aforementioned Mr. Jones became an MTV hit. Duritz was less than enthusiastic about his newfound fame, reportedly suffering nervous breakdowns (though he still managed to capitalize on his fame by dating Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox). Following the success of August and Everything After, the band released Recovering the Satellites in 1996, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Since

then, Counting Crows has released three studio albums and a pair of live albums. Accidentally in Love, featured on the Shrek 2 soundtrack, landed the band an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. Duritz has a history of rewriting songs for concerts and combining multiple songs, seamlessly threading one within another. Sometimes, Counting Crows plays one of its hits before interjecting with a song from a big-name like Bruce Springsteen or an underground musician. The band performed an altered version of Round Here on Howard Stern’s radio show and the shock-jock called it one of the best performances his studio had hosted. Handsome Harmonies Crosby, Stills & Nash Performs At Hard Rock Live

C

rosby, Stills & Nash will be where it belongs when the band performs at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino’s Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on August 20th. It seems the folk band fits perfectly in a place like South Florida: Members have an obsession with ships and water rivaled only by Jimmy Buffett, and David Crosby has been sailing since he was 11. The super-group formed from the wreckage of The Byrds, The Hollies and Buffalo Springfield. Crosby left the Byrds because of irreconcilable differences with bandmates, and Stephen Stills was out of a job after Buffalo Springfield disbanded. The two began experimenting and recorded a few songs. Graham Nash, then a member of The Hollies, performed with the two at a party just for fun, but the three found the combination of their voices to be perfect, and he left his band to join them.

On the strength of its previous fame, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the group’s selftitled debut album, reached No. 6 on the Billboard charts. The song Long Time Gone was noted for its political awareness, as it recounts the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Social consciousness would become a theme for the band. Members were noted for anti-war beliefs and mistrust of “the establishment.” The song Wooden Ships, recorded at the height of the Vietnam War, shares band members’ fears of a looming nuclear holocaust, and Ohio is a protest song in response to the Kent State shootings. Neil Young joined the group in 1970 (changing its abbreviation from CSN to CSNY), and Déjà Vu, its sophomore album, reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Young left shortly after, but the group remained successful, producing two more Top 10 albums and getting inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. While Griffin’s often loud and confrontational style has scored her some enemies, at the age of 48, her popularity continues to grow. Perhaps it’s because she’s a one-woman army bat-

One target is multibillionaire Oprah Winfrey. She bashes the worship-level love Winfrey receives from fans, saying, “it goes Father, Son, Holy Ghost, Oprah.” Griffin also makes light of the ambiguous relationship between Oprah and her best friend, Gayle King, often referring to them as Oprah and “her boyfriend Gayle”. Other targets include Paris Hilton, Barbara Walters and Clay Aiken, whom she

refers to as “Clay Gayken.” Griffin claims her celeb-bashing got her banned from talk shows such as Live! with Regis and Kelly and the Late Show with David Letterman. Griffin has garnered massive attention for her Bravo reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, now in its fifth season. The show won Emmys in 2007 and 2008 for Outstanding Reality Program, and Griffin received praise for her self-deprecating sense of humor, as the show surrounds Griffin’s lack of fame and attempts to garner publicity. The show is also noted for its guests, with the most current season featuring Paula Deen, T.I. and Salman Rushdie. Cool Cats Def Leppard Rocks Cruzan Amphitheatre M

iddle-aged rebels will pack Cruzan Amphitheatre on August 13th to revitalize their teen spirit when Def Leppard comes to West Palm Beach. Def Leppard, considered one of the vanguards of the British heavy metal movement of the late ’70s, became a stateside household name tailor-made for the MTV generation. Photograph, a single off the band’s Pyromania album, knocked the King of Pop off his throne when it replaced Beat It as the channel’s most-requested music video. Def Leppard also scored 11 Top 20 hits in the United States, including Pour Some Sugar on Me and Love Hurts.

Three of the band’s early members – bassist Rick Savage, vocalist Joe Elliot and drummer Rick Allen – still perform with the group. The other two original Def Leppard members are no longer with the band after succumbing to their vices: Guitarist Pete Willis was forced out in 1982 when the rest of the group determined his excessive drinking was threatening the band’s livelihood, and guitarist Steve Clark died after stacking antidepressants, painkillers and vodka. The band moved on, replacing Willis with Phil Collen and Clark with Vivian Campbell. Another near-casualty was Allen, who lost an arm in a car crash. Determined to keep drumming, he

created an electronic drum kit that allowed his legs to do the work of his missing arm. Allen tours with the band to this day. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, the band’s 10th studio album, was released last April and was intended to sound like “early ’70s AC/DC,” according to Elliot. The band also

broadened its sound, working with country star Tim McGraw. Check out the Def Leppard tour, when the guys will be joined by fellow ’70s band Cheap Trick and glam band Poison. The doors open at 7p.m. O i For more information, call 561-795-8883 or visit livenation.com.

The Heat Is Gone Putting The Fire Back In Your Relationship

By Felicia S. Levine

T

But she’s missing something. Badly.

Mason’s story is all too-familiar in this technologically advanced, multitasking era when struggling finances, challenging careers, social obligations and children (the ultimate aphrodisiac antidote) devour couples’ quality time like Bernie Madoff ’s investments did his clients’ life savings.

“I haven’t had sex in almost two years,” laments Mason, 46, now contemplating an affair with a colleague. “I still care about my husband, but we’re more like roommates than lovers and I have needs. I don’t even know how this happened!”

Consequently, marriages become less romantic and more like business arrangements, with precious free time relegated to chores, doctors’ appointments and carpools. Physical intimacy falls to the wayside receiving less priority than catching up on sleep. Who

o the outsider *Ellen Mason, a petite blonde with two smart, welladjusted kids and a devoted husband of 20 years, appears to have it all: a successful career at a prestigious law firm, a spacious home in a country club community and a loving family.

has time for sex when there’s a mortgage to pay, kids to feed and the car needs new tires? It’s enough to send the Dalai Lama in search of Xanax. “Couples are so overwhelmed by daily functioning that communication breaks down,” says Debra Gross, a licensed clinical social worker in Tamarac. “They go into survival mode and eventually become emotionally bankrupt – it’s like they’re making too many withdrawals from the marriage and not depositing anything,” she explains. “Soon there’s total burnout, which is when they become roommates.”

Indeed, relationship doldrums don’t occur overnight. Rather, they sneak up on you like those extra pounds after too many holiday parties. One day, you wake up and your marriage no longer...fits. Often, couples get so caught up in their routines that it takes a trigger for them to even realize something’s wrong. It could be a forgotten anniversary, generic holiday gift or even a greeting card. “You’re forced to acknowledge there’s a problem when it’s time to buy your spouse a card,” says Lori August 2009

37

that’s life8 relations “There are varying cycles of intimacy in a marriage and that’s normal. It’s like food – we may

love pizza, but after awhile we get bored of it. We get bored with the familiarity, not necessarily the person.” -- Lynn Dorfman-Volin, licensed marriage and family therapist, Delray Beach

ing love in different parts of the house. Don’t be afraid to experiment. One thing couples shouldn’t do: use their kids as an excuse not to be intimate. “I tell couples all the time – hire a babysitter, send them to their grandparents for a night or just lock your bedroom door!” says Sarvis.

Sarvis, a licensed clinical social worker and sex therapist in Deerfield Beach. “You panic because you can’t choose – none of the loving words apply anymore. So you buy a funny one instead of a mushy one. That’s when you realize, ‘Wow, this is worse than I thought.’” (Talk about your Hallmark moments.) If any of this rings familiar, don’t panic. Rather, take a cleansing breath and prepare for a heart-toheart with your partner (assuming you want to revive your sex life; if not, that’s an article for another day). Communication is crucial. The longer you wait, the harder it may be to turn things around. “I see couples who haven’t had sex in a year or two – by then, it’s very difficult to be comfortable with nudity and touching each other. So they put off talking about it, but it’s always the elephant in the room.” When approaching your partner, Gross suggests using what are known as “I Statements”: That is, you should say “I feel like we’re roommates” rather than “You make me feel like we’re roommates.” Framing your 38

feelings in this manner can prevent your partner from feeling attacked. Gross also recommends engaging in active listening: “You have to hear and comprehend what the other person is saying, whether you agree with them or not.” Next, it’s important to define the problem. Is it a matter of attraction? Are anger and resentment in the way? Does one of you have a decreased – or nonexistent – libido due to a physical condition or side effect of medication? Is it a matter of frequency? It’s common for one partner to want sex more often than the other.

Of course, great sex starts in the brain. Sarvis suggests building anticipation throughout the day with suggestive texts and e-mails, or with sexy whispers when the kids are not nearby. “A man should romance a woman, and a woman should stroke a man’s ego,” she says. “Men, pinching her butt does not apply here – give her a sincere compliment. Women, give him a peck on the cheek and tell him you appreciate all he does.” Engaging in new activities also breeds passion. “Doing new things gives you

more to talk about, and this stimulus leads to intimacy,” Sarvis explains. And whether you have sex once a week or once a year, it’s crucial that partners be on the same page. Otherwise, you may fall into what Sarvis calls the relationship dance. “This is when one partner wants sex, but the other’s always too tired. At first the apprehensive partner gives in, but over time may feel resentful and say ‘no.’ The other partner feels rejected, which may lead to straying or other negative patterns.” Talk to each other. “Some couples agree to minimal or no sex and still others agree to open relationships,” says Dorfman-Volin. “As long as you define it the same way – whether it’s once a year, once a week or not at all, it’s good. It’s about mutual agreement.” Finally, says Dorfman-Volin, when confronting sensitive issues, be tactful but truthful with your partner – even if it hurts. “Infidelity and betrayal are much worse than having a difficult conversation,” she says. “If there was a spark there once, chances are you can get it back.” O • Name has been changed to protect privacy

Wheels of Fortune Don’t Let The Family Road Trip Drive You Crazy By Leslie Kraft Burke

ou’ve painstakingly loaded the family and countless suitcases into the car and driven a mere block when the first dreaded “Are we there yet?” rears its ugly head from the backseat. A half hour later, it’s “Mom, he’s touching me!” Next comes the screaming, swatting, whining and –if you’re really lucky –barfing.

You’ve painstakingly loaded the family into the car and driven a mere block when the first dreaded

“Are we there yet?” rears its ugly head.

It’s about this time during your three-day drive that, in the name of serenity, you’re tempted to a) strap the kids to the luggage rack, b) threaten to lock them in the trunk with the boogeyman or c) consider abandoning them at the next truck stop. Then you remember that these things are considered bad parenting (and illegal).

Two Trips At In One The Ritz-Carlton, Naples By Julie Kay

Double Your Pleasure

I

t could just be the perfect family weekend.

A stay at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples allows Dad to hit balls at a 36-hole championship facility designed by the legendary Greg Norman, where a PGA Tour event is held. Meanwhile, Mom can shuttle over to the nearby Ritz-Carlton Spa, where luxurious body treatments, sand, salt and sea exfoliations and ionic-cleanse foot baths await. And for the kids, there are plenty of distractions: the resort has a brandnew teens’ entertainment lounge featuring Wii, PlayStation and Xbox, as well as a “Nature’s Wonders Center” for the younger set, comprised of 46

aquariums, nature exhibits, a laboratory and a place to interact with turtles, butterflies and other wildlife. But what really puts the southwest Florida resort, which is located just minutes from the balmy Gulf of Mexico, on the national map is its golf facilities.

held every December,” says Lauren Rotchford, a spokeswoman for the resort. “Many, many people come here for the world-class golf.” Many also come to the 295-room resort to hone their skills at The Rick Smith Golf Academy, which features individualized instruction, computerized swing analysis, private video viewing rooms and a student-teacher ratio of 2:1.

full days of comprehensive instruction. Parent/child instruction is also offered. The course itself is considered one of the most beautiful in the state – if not the world – featuring dazzling views of the Gulf of Mexico and three miles of pristine beaches.

Named the top golf resort in Florida by Conde’ Nast Traveler in 2008, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples is located on a pair of Tiburón courses, where guests have priority tee times and can take advantage of a variety of golf packages.

How good are the academy’s instructors? Consider this: the academy’s clients include some of the world’s greatest golfers, including Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and David Duval.

The two golf courses – “Gold” and “Black” – are marked by the use of stacked sod wall bunkers and coquina sand. Players have the choice of five tee boxes per hole to make the experience challenging for all skill levels.

“Guests can actually play on the course where the PGA tour tournament is

holes. Both Gold and Black courses span more than 7,000 yards, and a full-service practice area with chipping and putting greens is also available.

Or try the Sunset Rose Body Cocoon, which begins with a moisturizing application of rose essential oil followed by a geranium grape-seed scrub to exfoliate the skin.

With hubby safely ensconced at the golf course, his wife can set out on a different brand of fun – at the spa. Shuttles run every half hour to The Ritz-Carlton, Naples’ twin resort three miles away, where the spa is located.

After a relaxing day, meet your partner at the golf resort for a meal at Lemonía, a Tuscan grill overlooking the golf course. The new summer menu features dishes such as Agnolotti with Butter-Poached Lobster, Florida grouper and Piccata “Your Way” with choice of chicken, veal or grouper.

Decorated in the luxurious comfort of a Tuscan manor, the spa features rejuvenating steam rooms, saunas, aqua lounges, an outdoor mineral pool and some of the most diverse offerings you’ll find. Oh sure, there are traditional facials, pedicures and massages, but guests should really indulge in some of the signature offerings. For example, how about taking a Drift to Sleep treatment that allows you to doze off at a sub-conscious level through a peaceful body massage with warm aromatherapy oils, an exfoliating lavender body scrub and an aromatic milk bath taken while sipping herbal tea infused with St. John’s Wort? Built into the two-and-a-half hour treatment is a 30-minute catnap. Sea Holistic is a personal favorite: here algae oil and salt polish the skin and steamed, fragrant linen filled with marine-salt crystals, lavender and eucalyptus warm the body while masseuses attack trigger points and employ Thai massage techniques.

Lake Dora

The perfect way to end the evening is by sipping a Tigertini, the specialty cocktail created by The RitzCarlton, Naples in honor of – who else? – Tiger Woods, the world’s No. 1 player. The refreshing drink, which debuted this past February, is a bright green cocktail made of Hangar One vodka, Midori and a splash of pineapple juice, with marshmallow for garnish. As if you needed further enticement, to accommodate Boca Raton residents who visit the resort in summer, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples is offering a new Spa Escape package. For $259 per night, guests can stay at the resort and get a $200 spa credit, as well as a $50 gift card for the nearby Waterside Shops in Naples. The package is good May through October 31st. “Right now it’s all about the value,” explains Rotchford. “It’s a very tranquil, peaceful place for people on the east coast of Florida to come for the weekend – and an easy drive.” O

Well-Suited for Reality TV: Khloe (left) and Kourtney Kardashian

It’s good to be a Kardashian. Like a couple of stylish divas let loose in Miami, sisters Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian zipped from their oceanfront penthouse at Bentley Suites to SoBe clubs like Mynt, Mansion and LIV, and restaurants like Prime 112 and Phillippe in the Ganesvoort South. They met guys, suntanned on the beach, hosted fashion shows, shopped at tony boutiques and bought sexy merchandise for their new store, DASH, which opened this summer on South Beach. But they weren’t on vacation from their southern California home. With occasional help from popular sister Kim Kardashian, they were in Miami filming their daily activities for a new reality show scheduled this month to debut August 16th at 10 p.m. on E! Entertainment Television. Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami is an eight-episode spin-off featuring two of the stars of the network’s hit, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, a laugh-out-loud, family saga that just completed its third successful season – one of E!’s biggest ratings wins. “We’re so excited about our new show,” exclaims Khloe, 25, who simultaneously launched a Friday night talk-radio show on South Florida station Y-100 FM. “Kourtney and I are single and ready for something new.” Agrees Kourtney, 30: “I don’t love change, but I’m excited to grow and start a business in a new city. I really enjoy the energy and vibe of Miami.”

Khloe and Kourtney were given their own show after Keeping Up With the Kardashians producers, Ryan Seacrest Productions and Bunim-Murray Productions, realized viewers had fallen in love with the sisters’ entertaining personalities from the family’s weekly halfhour program. Because the adult Kardashian women, which include mom Kris Jenner, 53, married to Olympic Gold medalist Bruce Jenner, and sister Kim, 28, a model and actress, own two southern California boutiques – DASH and SMOOCH – producers thought a series starring the pair opening an extension of DASH would appeal to a TV audience. “Kourtney and Khloe had been looking to open another retail store and thought Miami was the perfect place,” says Lisa Berger, E!’s executive vice president of original programming and series development. “We knew fans could not miss out on this drama-filled duo as they invade such a beautiful, vibrant and notoriously wild city as Miami.” Producer Ryan Seacrest concurs, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans won’t be disappointed as their wit, sincerity and drama will not be missed.” The new show follows the sisters around Miami and South Beach as they launch DASH and make decisions as business owners – from staffing and ordering appropriate merchandise (super-sexy beachwear and bikinis), to learning the lay of a new landscape. Of course, being young, curious and exotically beautiful, the girls along the way encounter new boyfriends, nocturnal temptations and other unexpected excitement in multicultural Miami. “We aren’t about beach and yachts

the whole time,” jokes Kourtney, who runs DASH in Calabasas, Calif. “In Miami, we have one day off from work, and then we go to the beach or study the wonderful subtropical architecture. Once we have the new store up and running, I’ll commute back and forth from L.A. and maybe open a third boutique in Manhattan.” The new show allows viewers a fantasy trek through Miami, with scenes from the May ribbon-cutting at DASH, which took place the morning after their grandopening party at The Clevelander (where the girls were more than an hour late because they were watching American Idol in their penthouse suite). There’s also a fashion show at Setai, a drag queen contest at The Clevelander hosted by Miami’s leading cross-dresser, Elaine Lancaster, to choose a Khloe lookalike and a rainy alfresco dinner at Cafe Prima Pasta in Miami Beach, with Kourtney and a friend discussing boyfriends while chowing down on beef carpaccio, cheesy gnocchi, ginger salmon and other goodies. Fans will appreciate watching Kourtney hosting a party at Mynt, both girls headlining at LIV at the Fontainebeau Resort and listening to Khloe’s raunchy remarks on her radio show (which Kourtney complains takes her away from work too often). If the new show is half as buzz-worthy as Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it should be a hit, pundits say. The original works because it’s unique: There are eight family members, each with an inimitable personality. The familial dynamic can be confusing, so pay attention: Kris Jenner is a TV entertainment correspondent and manages the careers of Khloe, Kourtney and Kim, her three eldest daughters. She was divorced in 1989 from the late Robert Kardashian, a prominent Los Angeles defense attorney, who, as part of the Dream Team, represented O.J. Simpson

along with Robert Shapiro, F. Lee Bailey and the late Johnnie Cochran, in his 1995 murder trial. (Simpson was acquitted of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman.) Kardashian was the father of the three girls and Rob, 22, who graduated recently from University of Southern California, his dad’s alma mater. Stepfather Bruce Jenner, 59, and Kris, were married in 1991, and are parents of fireballs Kendall, 12, and Kylie, 10, who conspire to outsmart their parents at every opportunity, including the purchase of a puppy behind Dad’s back. Stepbrothers Burt, Brandon and Brody Jenner (who appeared in The Hills and then Bromance, the spinoff), and stepsister Casey Jenner, rarely appear on the show.

“Everything we do is real. We fight and scream but love each other, and I am so happy Khloe and Kourtney have their own show! I can’t wait to visit them in Miami!” -- Kim Kardashian

Family members regularly pummel each other with rhetoric. Jenner, who underwent both a colonoscopy August 2009

and plastic surgery on recent shows, plays the straight man, amusing audiences with conservative wisecracks about his stepdaughters’ racy lifestyles. Kourtney and Khloe goodheartedly bash their parents, and put sister Kim, whom they quip is a “diseased shopaholic,” in their places.

where classmates included Nicole Richie and Luke Walton.

“Kim has a real problem with shopping, my mom is obsessed with us, and Bruce is just Bruce but we all love him,” deadpans Khloe, also a recent contestant on Donald Trump’s show, Celebrity Apprentice. “We had no idea Keeping Up would be so hot. It was thrown together a couple of years ago and turned out great. We love it and are so excited about the spin-off.” Kim, a superstar beauty in demand from coast to coast for her hot body, pleasant personality, business acumen – she has an online shoe business with attorney Shapiro – and overall cool factor, says she’s hyped about both shows.

After graduating from Arizona in 2001 with a degree in theater arts, Kourtney returned to Los Angeles, living the good life and trying to decide what to do with the rest of it. In 2005, she joined the cast of E!’s Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive, a reality show featuring celebrities living together in Colorado. While she was portrayed as a typical “rich bitch,” it paid off because producers contributed a big chunk of change to charity as part of her appearance. The show also made E! aware of her kooky, cool family, leading to Keeping Up With the Kardashians two years later. (The family also appeared on NBC’s Celebrity Family Feud in 2008.)

“Everything we do is real,” Kim says. “We fight and scream but love each other, and I am so happy Khloe and Kourtney have their own show! I can’t wait to visit them in Miami!”

Kourtney decided to take acting classes, but ultimately realized she preferred the fashion business. “I actually hated acting classes and called in sick,” she recalls. “I was more into clothes.”

Kris says she “could not be prouder” of the two. “They’re definitely on an adventure, and now that I’m used to the idea of them leaving home, I want the girls to embrace this experience and time in their lives. This is an amazing journey we are all on as a family. We are truly blessed.”

Her grandmother owns a store in La Jolla, Calif. called Shannon & Co., so she veritably grew up in the ready-to-wear business. As a little girl, she’d go with her mom to grandma’s store and take home all kinds of cool outfits. “It’s really in my blood,” she says. “So I was happy when we opened DASH.”

While compatible, the sisters are remarkably different. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kourtney, quiet and studious yet heady, attended Marymount High School, an all-girls’ private institution. The eldest sister spent two years at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas before transferring to University of Arizona in Tucson, 52

“I was homesick at SMU and cried a lot so I transferred,” she recalls. “I didn’t feel comfortable leaving home. I’m always happier being around my family.”

After Miami, new stores will follow in New York and Las Vegas since Kourtney, who broke up with her boyfriend of two years about nine months ago, has found her bliss. “We want to live in a casino while we open our Las Vegas store,” she says. “But all in good time.” In contrast to Kourtney’s laid-back persona, sister Khloe is a no-nonsense woman who speaks her mind – often with a dollop of sarcasm.

T h e B o c a R at o n Ob s e r v e r

Born in Los Angeles, she didn’t like school and instead opted for home education. Entrepreneurial and energetic, she chose to work with her older sisters and became a co-owner of DASH. A supporter of PETA, she participated in the “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign as chronicled on her family’s show. Like Kim, who dates New Orleans Saint Reggie Bush, Khloe likes hunky jocks. She’s dated the NBA’s Sacramento Kings Guard Rashad McCants and NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneer Running Back Derrick Ward. Khloe has had more trouble than her siblings coping with the death of her father in 2003 from cancer. In fact, she got a DUI (driving under the influence) around the anniversary of his passing, which was reenacted in an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, entitled, “Remembering Dad.” When she was released after a short jail stint, the family celebrated with champagne. Khloe quips: “What the f--k kind of family takes their daughter out of jail for DUI then goes drinking?” After her DUI, the restless sister decided to make some changes. “It was time for me to do something else, live in a new city,” says Khloe, who’s never been away from home. “I was ready to move to New York, but decided not now.” She opted to open DASH in Miami, instead. “Miami is beautiful, and it motivates you to take care of yourself. The competition is wild.” She adds, “Mom flipped out when I mentioned New York but she was happy Kourtney and I went to Miami together.” Even Bruce offers a light-hearted thumbs up: “I hate to see them leave ... my girls in that wild city. Kind of scary without my guidance and total supervision... but it’s great for Khloe and Kourtney to have a spin-off.” Stay tuned. O

The Practical Alternative To Being Superwoman Do you know a mother trying to be Superwoman? She’s managing the kids’ homework, carpool and school activities, not to mention sports practices, dance lessons and birthday party itineraries; doing the grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, cooking and dog walking – and oh yeah, working 40-plus hours a week at the office. Perhaps she’s stressed, frustrated and feeling guilty for not being able to spread herself even thinner. Perhaps that mother is you.

CIRCLE OF LIFE

he good news is, there’s help. We need merely look to the First Lady for inspiration and an increasingly common solution to Superwoman syndrome. “The work-life balance is something I think about a lot,” Michelle Obama wrote last year on BlogHer, a popular blog for women. “Too often, when I’m with the kids, I feel like I’m shortchanging work. And when I’m at work … I feel like I’m shortchanging the kids.” Subsequently, Obama moved her mother into

the White House, establishing her as the head of her Momtourage – that invaluable group of people (family and nonfamily members) who provide emotional, logistical and physical support to get everything that needs to get done on any given parental day. Momtourages (aka, Mamfias, Mommy Mobs, Momagers and Parent Posses) are a growing phenomenon being embraced by millions of women grappling with trying to do it all – and do it well. The evidence can be found in the proliferation of blogs on the Internet.

“Here we have Michelle Obama, graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School, mother of two, and now our country’s top working mom telling us she’s struggled for so many years to get it right when it comes to balancing work and life and still hasn’t figured it out,” says Dr. Sherrie Bourg, a Coral Springs psychologist who specializes in stress among moms. Dr. Bourg’s blog (high-achievingwomen.com) offers advice and support for moms at risk of burnout. And as a mom with her own Momtourage (which includes a long-time nanny and an extensive network of friends), she can personally attest to the need for a support system.

woman will only lead you to resentment, fatigue and failure. You cannot do it all!”

“There’s every kind of Momtourage, from nannies and housekeepers, to friends and family members, or maybe both,” she explains. “A woman’s financial situation has a lot to do with it, and how many kids she has too. The first step is in the mind of the mom – that it’s OK to ask for help!”

Sandberg’s early “mommy” days are behind her now that her daughter, Lauren, 22, has graduated college, but feels strongly her Momtourage was the only way she was able to handle raising a daughter as a single mom.

Still more support came from girlfriends and Sandberg’s mom – allowing her to travel or go on a date, while a housekeeper kept the home in order and a neighbor’s granddaughters provided ad hoc babysitting. Shannon Favole, a national sales manager for The Breakers in Palm Beach, found once she set up her Momtourage she was able to take parenting to the next level. “To be fully engaged with my family is priceless,” says Favole, whose support system includes the “best nanny in the world” and a high school neighbor who takes over childcare duties at 3 p.m. each day until Favole gets home. “Life is short,” she says. “Let someone help so you can help what matters most – your family.” August 2009

ORGANIZING THE TROOPS

T

he most successful momtourage organizers know that formalizing support can be key to success.

Personally, she’s a mom of three (twin 7-yearold boys and a 1-year-old boy) and member of a Mamfia.

“We’ve hired my mother-in-law to do school pick-up and be with our three kids until one of us gets home from work,” explains Sarah Marmion, a working mom and company spokesperson for a Florida utility company in Juno Beach.

“As the clock strikes 7 p.m. and all the kids are in bed, we’re on the phone to one another, dishing over the latest playground gossip, bouncing ideas and worries around and occasionally complaining about how our husbands just don’t ‘get it,’” Folsom explains. “We know our husbands love us, but only your Mamfia cares about the minutiae of the day and can lend a sympathetic ear for your post-bedtime rant.”

“We can’t rely on a wily-nily system; it’s too stressful if a step-in caregiver has conflict, says Marmion, who pays her mother-in-law for her services. “We have nailed the system down and because it’s a financial deal, the guilt of calling a relative for help is not an issue.” Professionally, Jennifer Folsom is a director of a staffing firm that connects returning-towork Moms with part-time employment. 58

T h e B o c a R at o n Ob s e r v e r

Unlike some moms, Folsom doesn’t suffer guilt about asking for and accepting help. “Think about it,” she says. “When you’re successful in a career, working at a firm, you didn’t do it all yourself there either. You had resources. You had help. This is no different.”

Freelance writer Gina Shaw, 42, is another guilt-free Mom and proudly boasts of her Parent Posse. The mother of a 3-year-old and a 14-month-old, her group evolved from a closeknit group of women at a local daycare center. “A group of us became close when all of our girls were about 6 months old,” Shaw explains. “It was very organic in growth and developed into play dates to going on vacation together.” In her group, every Mom works full time, and only Shaw is lucky enough to work from home and avoid a daily commute. “It’s wonderful to have this forum where we all respect each other’s opinion,” she says. “It’s our safe space; we e-mail each other all the time. They’re also there to validate your screw-ups.” Stacey Kannenberg, an author, motivational speaker and mother of two daughters, has written a series of books, including Let’s Get

Jennifer Folsom (right), son Anderson and Momentum Resources candidate Angela Meyers

Mom and author Stacey Kannenberg and her book (below).

Ready for Kindergarten! and boasts an extensive Momtourage of part-time workers. She’s adept at outsourcing work around the house and caring for the kids while running four companies from home. “I have the most amazing cleaning lady in Deanna, while Brenda cooks yummy meals for my family. Then there’s Sam, a college student and Amanda, the 16-year-old neighbor for babysitting. I also have a stay-at-home Dad in the neighborhood that does our lawn,” Kannenberg explains. She attributes her success to remaining super

organized. “You’ve got to make the effort to get the game plan in place,” Kannenberg says. “It takes practice.” Martha McGlothlin Gayle, president of a charitable foundation, is a mother to four children under the age of 3. “We adopted two and then had twins with a surrogate,” she says. “Clearly, we need help.” McGlothlin is one of the fortunate ones, admitting her Momtourage sort of “fell into place.” Learning to keep things running smoothly took a bit more effort. Her support system includes a part-time night nurse, babysitters, her out-of-

work cousin (a chef), friends, her mother-in-law and a part-time housekeeper. “Every Friday I make a chart of who is working when and doing what, and I post that in the kitchen. With so many people, you can’t expect them to just know what to do, there’s upfront time needed to direct them.” A universal truth among the successful moms we spoke with is that, all gave themselves license to accept help. “I really believe you can only do a certain amount of work each day,” Folsom says. “The rest needs to be outsourced. No one gets an award at the end of the day for being a martyr.” O

Better By The Dozen Meet Boca Raton’s Hottest Husbands 2009 Never question the fervor of a Boca Raton wife. After announcing our second annual Hottest Husbands contest, we were flabbergasted by the overwhelming response (double the entries from last year)! Letters and photos arrived via e-mail and snail mail, with women boasting of their men’s smokin’ bodies, handsome mugs and prestigious careers. And while all our winners are easy on the eyes (as their wives will proudly attest), it’s their strong character, kind nature and love of family that ultimately won us over. We’re proud to introduce Boca Raton’s 12 Hottest Husbands.

To the extent that Cheryl, who is actually a hot wife, thinks I am, it’s been a matter of balancing family, career and recreation, particularly because I’ve been active in so many sports and activities over the years. I guess the fact that Cheryl nominated me must mean I’ve achieved some kind of balance.” 64

Family Resorts Keep Kids At Bay So Parents Can Play When we were kids, hotels got two thumbs up if they had a pool and air-conditioning. Times sure have changed. Luxury resorts today offer full-fledged camps for discriminating children, with everything from mini-golf courses and treasure hunts to water parks and day spas. The best part? These nonstop adventures keep kids occupied so parents can savor some much-needed alone time. The following destinations will inspire you to pack your bags. NATURAL FUN The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne may be ultra upscale, but don’t worry about bringing kids to a chic resort that has mother-of-pearl wall coverings in its opulent bathrooms. This tropical paradise is extremely family friendly. It’s evident in the amount of care and attention infused into the Ritz Kids half-day and full-day programs for children ages 5 to 12. Activities rival a cruise itinerary, with tennis, fishing, treasure hunts, arts and crafts, pool games and excursions to local parks and the historic Bill Baggs Cape Florida Lighthouse. From June through August, the program morphs into Adventure Camp, with even more fun stuff including tennis, basketball, soccer, relay races and additional field trips to venues such as the Miami Children’s Museum, Miami Seaquarium, Parrot Jungle, Miami Metrozoo and Blackbeard’s Water Park. There’s also a summer tennis camp for kids ages 7 to 16. During holiday weekends, the resort schedules activities for tweens and teens. And while the kids are occupied, parents can play. This serene resort, with its stunning nature preserves and golden beaches, is the perfect backdrop for a couples’ massage in an oceanfront cabana. Or, relax at the adults-only Tranquility Pool or in the adjacent Dune Oceanfront Lounge. Need more activity? Eleven tennis courts await at the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center, the largest of any Ritz-Carlton in the world. Rather be in the water? Paddleboats, kayaks, Hobie Cats and windsurfing are available.

There’s a Kids’ Night Out every Saturday, affording the perfect opportunity for parents to enjoy a romantic dinner for two. We suggest the Sensory Odyssey package – a five-course aphrodisiac dinner in a candlelit oceanfront gazebo with a private butler and musician.

Consider adding The Ritz-Carlton Club Level when booking your room ($100 to $180 extra), which affords guests access to two club rooms – one oceanfront – where they can grab breakfast in the mornings, snacks during the day, and hors d’oeuvres, aperitifs and desserts at night. The Peace of Mind package starts at $339 daily and includes breakfast for two, a half-day Ritz-Kids program for two and up to three nights (based on length of stay). Other packages available. For more information, call 305-365-4500 or visit ritzcarlton.com.

WILD WEST At Vista Verde Resort, kids are encouraged to whoop and holler. And at this paradise, hidden away in Colorado’s Elk River Valley, there’s plenty to shout about. Adventure is incorporated into every activity at this working ranch, from the welcome hayride to the farewell marshmallow roast. After all, how many resorts boast their own fire truck for emergency runs into town for scoops of hand-cranked ice cream? Kid Wranglers (über-energetic, boot-wearing babysitters) keep campers ages 6 to 11 happy so parents can revel in a hot-air balloon ride, take a cooking or wine-tasting class, ride horses (which are chosen especially for guests during their stay) or – depending on the season – sled, ski, snowshoe, fly fish, hike, raft or rock climb. Another resort tradition is the Dine and Dash, which gives parents a chance to reconnect

over a candlelight dinner while young kids enjoy hayrides, treasure hunts or outdoor games. The resort, located just outside Steamboat Springs, also offers plenty of teen-approved activities, such as movies, tubing the Yampa River, rock climbing and an overnight “survival” trip. Everything here is designed so guests can enjoy the wild, wild west – and that means no phones or TVs in the rooms. The western theme trickles down to the authentic one-to-three-bedroom log cabins, which offer wood stoves and hot tubs on the decks, and balconies in the lodge rooms offer panoramic views of the mountains. This is how the west was won. Weekly summer rates start at $3,300 per person ($600 less for children under 12) and are all-inclusive. Closed in spring during “mud season.” For more information, call 800-526-7433 or visit vistaverde.com.

water WORLD Any place that houses a 34-acre water park with 13 pools, a 7-acre snorkeling lagoon, 50,000 marine animals, adrenaline-pumping water slides and an action-packed kids’ camp gets our persnickety stamp of approval. Atlantis, the mega-resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, offers all that – and much more. This is the ultimate in family fun, with over-the-top activities for guests of all ages. The kids’ program is divided into three age

groups, and you'll find no routine arts and crafts here. Rather, junior guests feed fish, explore the lost city of Atlantis and tour the resort’s Fish Hospital, where they visit newborn, ailing and acclimating marine life and learn how the resort cares for its sea creatures. Even blasé teens unplug their iPods once they arrive and discover the teen-only spa and nightclub. The club, awash with leopardprint couches, a disco ball, mirrored walls and gothic velvet drapes, is the spot to surf the net, watch movies, play Xbox, GameCube or PlayStation or join the Friday night karaoke session. They may even spot a celebrity or two – Rihanna, Fergie, Jesse McCartney, JoJo and Christina Aguilera have been seen here. Parents find their own nirvana among myriad options, including a 50,000-square-foot casino, a 30,000-square-foot spa, the Earth & Pottery Studio, a quaint Bahamian marketplace, a cabaret theater, tennis courts, 19 bars, 12 restaurants and a marina that’s earned Atlantis the nickname, “Monté Carlo of the Americas,” for attracting yachts from around the world. By the way, don’t leave without exploring The Dig, where you’ll find partially submerged archaeological sites containing artifices and hieroglyphics of the ancient Atlanteans. Rates start at $260 nightly mid-August through October and $515 nightly January through April. For more information, call 800-ATLANTIS or visit atlantis.com.

CREATURE COMFORTS

FAMILY AFFAIR

The kids are clamoring to go camping, but your idea of roughing it is no access to a Starbucks for 30 miles. We’ve got the perfect compromise: Glamping (glamorous camping).

The Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, which recently underwent a $187 million renovation, welcomes the pitter-patter of little feet, and its kids-only check-in desk is just the start of the Red Carpet welcome. Tack on a kids’ camp tweaked every six months to ensure vitality, add a special meet-and-greet with the camp staff and it’s nearly nirvana.

At The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana, families can experience all the glories of Mother Nature without forfeiting the creature comforts (think gourmet treats and a cozy bed) most of us crave. Families sleep in a 270-square-foot tent on the banks of the Blackfoot River fronting towering pines but awaken to freshly-brewed gourmet coffee served by a butler. Here, you’ll not only have beds and electricity, but also twice-daily housekeeping service. The resort promises “nature served on a silver platter for those who only want to sleep under five

LOCAL LUXURY You’ve got to love a resort with a 24-hour family room where you can lounge, surf the Web, watch TV, play a game or read the paper. But when that resort also has a girly girls’ day spa for your little princess, a youth fishing day for your angler and an up-to-the-minute-cool teen program, you know you’ve hit the getaway jackpot. This 356-acre Boca Raton Resort & Club is all that, and more. Its year-round Camp Boca – based at the newly refurbished Boca Beach Club – offers programs for kids ages 3 through 5 (Boca Tots) and kids 6 through 12 (Boca Bunch). The resort also has 28 luxury vacation homes. The property offers extraordinary camps. Fulland half-day programs for kids ages 5 through 12 include lessons on map and compass reading, knot tying and building a wilderness shelter. There are also scavenger hunts, hikes, petting zoos and a trip to a historic ghost town. Teens have their own thrice-weekly activities that include camping lessons, where they’ll learn how to gather firewood, pitch tents, build a shelter and fire, read a compass and cook on a campfire. There are also target practice sessions and an Adventure Day, where they’ll hike, boat, golf and join a triathlon. There’s just as much excitement for parents, who can ride horses, canoe, kayak, drive an ATV, hike, fish, golf or relax at the spa. Winter visitors can dog sled, cross-country ski or ice skate. Even the food here is an adventure – we recommend indulging in French Toast served with huckleberries picked from the slopes of surrounding mountains and handmade sausage. Four-night family packages, which include accommodations for parents and two children, meals and more, start at $5,488; four-night glamping packages start at $3,255. The Grow The Family getaway includes a romantic oceanfront room, red-clover and raspberry tea (reputed to have pregnancy-promoting qualities) and a fertility-enhancing aromatherapy couples’ massage. And, yes, a “Do Not Disturb” sign. The package is offered during sea turtle-mating season (through October) and offers a free three-night return visit for parents who provide a birth certificate within eight to 10 months of their baby’s arrival. A portion of proceeds benefits the Sea Turtle Monitoring & Protection Project of the Conservancy for Southwest Florida. Got a golf lover in the family? Kids ages 6 to 15 can play free after 3 p.m. when accompanied by a paying adult and get a free lesson when accompanied by an adult taking a paid lesson. Scuba diving classes are offered for kids ages 5 and up. There’s plenty more to do, such as sailing, dive-in movies, tennis, shelling tours, pool games, yoga classes and a 24,000-square-foot spa. But leave time each evening for the sunset celebration, where a storyteller shares the legends of Marco Island. Rates start at $249 nightly for the Baby Butler package (for one child) and $409 for the Fertile Turtle package.

not imposing a minimum number of campers required. While the littlest campers enjoy interactive games, crafts and outdoor activities, the older group swims, fishes, and goes on scavenger hunts and nature walks. And to keep with the technological times, teens can check Teens Chill on Facebook and Boca Resort Teens on MySpace to get the latest news and a schedule of teen-tested resort events. And while the kids are off having a blast, parents can relax on the private beach or at the spa, play golf on one of the two 18-hole championship courses or try one of the 30 tennis courts (the Evert Tennis Academy is located here). There are seven pools and three fitness centers from which to choose. The resort, which just underwent a $220 million renovation, offers plenty of family fun as well: You’ll want to gather for movies by the pool, sandcastle-building contests, beach volleyball, treasure hunts and water sports. Here, the toughest family decision may be deciding what to do first. O Kids’ camp full-time programs cost $65 per day, per guest and $35 per half-day session. Canine-Friendly Parks And Beaches For Dog Day Afternoons Americans love dogs. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are about 75 million dog owners in this country – and Boca Raton is right up there in terms of puppy love. For proof, simply observe the myriad shoppers pushing furbabies in strollers around Town Center. ¶ And let’s face it: we pick up their poop. ¶ When it’s time for rambunctious play, canine-friendly parks and beaches abound, replete with dog-tailored water fountains, agility tracks, obstacle courses and tree-shaded areas for rest and socializing. The following allow four-legged friends to run leash-free – the way nature intended. Lake Ida Dog Park Thanks to philanthropist George D. Cornell, Delray Beach dogs have a place to run free. The park offers eight shaded benches for owners, dog fountains and a paved washing area. “Everyone is very friendly,” says Jon Roos, marketing coordinator for Lynn University’s athletics department, who twice weekly visits the park with Lola, his Chihuahua. “It has a nice vibe to it.” Admission is free. Hours: Dawn to dusk daily, except Thursdays, when the park is closed from noon to 3 p.m. 2929 Lake Ida Road, Delray Beach; 561-966-6600, pbcgov.com/parks/dog parks/lakeida. Canine Beach Dogs can swim in the ocean or dig in the sand along this 100-yard stretch of beach, located adjacent to the area’s high-rise hotels. A security guard provides cleanup bags and makes sure everyone gets along. You may consider leaving your dog’s leash on, as the site is located near heavy traffic. Beachgoers can buy an annual pass ($30 for resi80

dents, $45 for nonresidents), or pay a $7 weekend fee. Hours: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Located on A1A, between Sunrise Boulevard and Lifeguard Stand #14, Fort Lauderdale; 954-8287275, ci.ftlaud.fl.us/cityparks/canine_ beach/index.htm. Dr. Steven G. Paul Dog Park The brainchild of the late veterinarian, Dr. Steven G. Paul, this twoacre park features a fenced perimeter so canines can roam, an obstacle course, canine water fountains and showers and a Memorial Board for beloved departed pets. For owners, there’s a gazebo with picnic benches and airlocks at exits to keep dogs from straying. Note: Dogs must have current vaccinations; those less than four months old are prohibited, and there’s a maximum of three dogs per owner allowed. Admission is free. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., daily. Mizner Bark: The Boca Raton Dog Park At this two-acre park (one acre for large dogs, one for small), humans mingle on cozy benches while pooches – often donning designer outfits – socialize. There are water fountains for man and dog, but clearly canines rule: While there are no restrooms for you, there are plenty of dog-wash stations, plus six bag stations for cleanup. Parking permits are required and obtained at any city community center. Boca residents enter free; nonresidents pay $25 a month or $265 annually. Hours: 7:30 a.m. to dusk daily, except for Wednesdays, when the park opens at noon. 751 Banyan Trail, Boca Raton; 561-393-7821, ci.boca-raton. fl.us/rec/dogpark/miznerbark.shtm. Jupiter Beach At this two-and-a-half-mile stretch of pristine beach there are no set hours, rules, fees, or officials checking tags or licenses. While the beach is low-key, a group called The Friends of Jupiter Beach recruits “beach ambassadors” to educate the

public about cleanup, leashes, safety and protecting dogs from tar patches that can taint tender paws. The whole town is canine friendly, holding Dog Days Baseball Games and Meet for Treat Yappy Hours. Dogs are allowed on non-guarded beaches from Jupiter to Juno Beach. (south of Carlin Park and north or Marcinski Road); 561-741-2100, jupiter.fl.us/ParksRecreation/ Beaches/Dogs-on-the-Beach.cfm. Happy Tails Dog Park Home of the annual Doggie Palooza festival, this five-acre site is divided into three sections – a leash-free run/ fun area for large dogs, an exercise/obstacle course space and a section for dogs 25 pounds or less. The park holds pet-centric events throughout the year and there’s a sheltered pavilion, water fountains (for dog and human), restroom facilities and plenty of cleanup bags. Admission is free. Bark Park At Snyder Park This two-acre site’s favorite slogan is, “The Park Dogs Ask for by Name.” Offerings include separate areas for small and large dogs, canine drinking fountains, agility equipment, leash stations, hose stations, scoopersupply depots, and fountains, benches and picnic tables for owners. The park hosts a doggie swim program on weekends ($1 fee), and a freshwater lake allows you and your pooch to take a dip. Dogs must have current tags and remain leashed until inside park gates. Pooch Pines At Okeeheelee Park Built in 2004, this five-acre site is located at the highest point in Okeeheelee Park, a hilly location

that invites cool breezes. There are separate fenced-in areas for large and small dogs, three drinking fountains for both dog and human, shaded benches, a paved wash station, bike rack, cleanup bags and free parking. Note: most visitors congregate in the gazebo to avoid harsh sunlight; if it’s too crowded, try a shaded bench in the back. Admission is free. Barkham At Markham Dog Park Opened in 2005, this park was Broward County’s first to be landscaped with Bermuda sod for an even grassy playing surface. The five-acre park features areas for large and small dogs, three sheltered spots, drinking fountains for dog and human, a dog wash area, cleanup bags and asphalt paths for leisurely strolls. The park offers training

classes on Saturday mornings, and dogs must be at least 4 months old, with proof of current vaccinations and tags. Admission to Markham Park is $1.50 on weekends and holidays. Bayside Marketplace, Miami

Busch Gardens, Tampa

Located downtown next to the AmericanAirlines Arena, Bayside is an enclave of restaurants and shops, all surrounding a waterfront stage, which frequently features live music. A number of boats provide tours of Biscayne Bay, Millionaire’s Row, Fisher Island and the Port of Miami. Stroll through stores, grab a meal, sip mojitos while enjoying live music, then catch a boat ride. ¿Es un bueno tiempo, no?

Busch Gardens offers close encounters with animals, a safari across the Serengeti Plains, year-round live entertainment and a number of roller-coasters and water rides. Check out The SheiKra, a floorless dive coaster; Gwazi, a wooden coaster; and Scorpion, which features a 360degree spiral loop. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, Jupiter

This African-style safari is one of the world’s few places where visitors can actually drive through an animal sanctuary. The trip takes about an hour; go at your own pace with the help of an audiotaped guide. Stop roadside, where there’s a good chance of getting close to giraffes, monkeys, rhinoceri, zebras, elephants and, of course, the big bosses – the lions. At the end of the five-mile roadway, there’s a theme park with a petting zoo, giraffe-feeding exhibit and rides. For more information, call 561-7931084 or visit lioncountrysafari.com.

Get hooked on the Fishing Hall of Fame Museum, located adjacent to the Bass Pro Shop in Dania Beach, where you’ll find fish-related films, galleries and exhibits. The Hall of Fame features accomplishments and mounted, life-size world-record catches. At the outdoor boardwalk, visitors can take photos with a humongous swordfish and walk a nature trail brimming with wildlife. Cap off the day with a fresh seafood dinner at the adjacent Islamorada Fish Co.

The fire-engine red Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse in northern Palm Beach County offers tours daily, from Tuesday through Sunday. During your visit, a guide leads you up steps to the very top, where the views are spectacular. The oil house – a building once used to store kerosene, which powered the lighthouse – has been converted to a small museum, and a building outside the station serves as a gift shop and meeting place.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, South Miami

Whitehall Flagler Museum, Palm Beach

Fronting beautiful Biscayne Bay sits Vizcaya, an opulent Northern Italian mansion. Built by wealthy industrialist James Deering, who used it as a winter residence from 1916 to 1925, the manse and its exquisite gardens are open to the public. The house contains more than 70 rooms decorated in ancient artifacts and European furnishings; equally impressive are the acres of Versailles-like gardens, filled with charming nooks and crannies and aging limestone fountains.

For the quintessential Palm Beach experience, check out the Whitehall Flagler Museum, former home to Henry Flagler, co-founder of Standard Oil and the man who brought the railroad to South Florida. Modeled after a Beaux Arts Palace, the museum appears as it did in 1902, down to its opulent furnishings, china, clothing and jewelry. Make sure to check out Flagler’s personal railway car, one of the museum’s highlights. O

Happy Meals Cooking With Kids Yields Sweet Memories Some of life’s sweetest moments happen in the kitchen. Why not create them with the next generation of cooks – your children? They may not be ready for the complexities of crème brûlée, but kids as young as preschool age can begin to learn basic skills. Not only will you be creating delicious food together, but memories that will last a lifetime. Here are some kid-friendly recipes to get you started. By DL Lunsford

Brazilian Cheese Puffs cup canola oil 1⁄ 3 cup water 1⁄ 3 cup milk 2 cups tapioca starch or yucca (manioc) flour, available in grocery stores or Latin markets 2 eggs, lightly beaten 21⁄2 cups freshly grated Sardo Parmesan, your favorite Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese 1⁄ 2

Strawberry Cheesecake Sunflower oil, for greasing 6 oz graham crackers 3⁄ 4 stick butter 1 cup whole strawberries (plus extra to decorate) 1⁄ 8 cup sugar 2 Tbsp water 1 package strawberry gelatin 7 oz cream cheese 7⁄ 8 cup whipping cream Grease cake pans with sunflower oil. Put graham crackers in a plastic bag; crush into fine crumbs with rolling pin. Pour into a bowl. Melt butter, pour onto cracker crumbs and mix. Press into bottoms of pans (can use heart-shaped pans or loose-bottomed 8-inch cake pan). Chop strawberries into pieces and pour into a pan; add sugar and water and simmer until strawberries are soft. Remove from heat, add gelatin and stir until smooth. Leave strawberry mixture to cool. Whip cream cheese. Pour the strawberry mixture onto the cheese, and whisk until cream forms stiff peaks. Spoon onto strawberry and cream cheese mixture and fold in. Spoon mixture onto crackers in pans. Smooth out tops, and refrigerate for 2 hours until set. MAKES ONE CAKE Source: Cook It Together, by Annabel Karmel, DK Publishing

Preheat oven to 375ºF. In medium saucepan, combine oil, water, and milk and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, pour starch into large bowl. Once boiling, add liquid to starch and mix. Let rest for about 15 minutes, and stir in eggs and cheese. Form into medium-size balls, the circumference of a half dollar. Just before guests arrive, place balls an inch apart on parchment paper-covered sheet pans. Bake on top rack of oven until they start to brown (about 15 to 20 minutes). Serve immediately. Piece Maker California Pizza Kitchen Pleases The Pickiest Palates By Kenny Spahn

ooking for a family-friendly restaurant that will delight kids and still satisfy adult palates? Head to California! California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), that is. Located in Town Center at Boca Raton, the restaurant caters to a variety of tastes. The younger set will appreciate the CPKids menu, with its child-friendly pizzas, pastas, salads and sweets. The restaurant offers signature beverages for kids of all ages, ranging from frozen lemonades, fruity Italian sodas and tropical smoothies for the little 98

ones to a full bar, wine list and specialty cocktails for the big kids. CPK is renowned for its California-inspired, creative take on familiar favorites. East meets West with the delectable Avocado Club Egg Rolls, baked Tortilla Spring Rolls and refreshing Singapore Shrimp Rolls. Other appetizers ($5 to $11) range from Garlic Cheese Focaccia and Sesame-Ginger Dumplings to a rich and silky Asparagus Soup. Meal-worthy sal-

ads (half or full portions, $7 to $16) include Thai Crunch, BBQ Chicken Chop and Seafood Misto. My favorite is the new Moroccan Chicken Salad, served with seasoned chicken breast and Romaine lettuce, along with an unlikely mix of roasted butternut squash, Medjool dates, avocado, fresh beets, toasted almonds, chopped egg and dried cranberries. Of course, pizza remains the eatery’s featured item. CPK, which opened in Beverly Hills in 1985, launched with its signature BBQ Chicken Pizza and the original star still reigns supreme (although new Bacon and Hawaiian versions are close seconds). Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Shrimp Scampi, Wild Mushroom, Carne Asada, BLT and the new Cheeseburger Pizza further showcase CPK’s eclectic vision, while Italian Sausage, Margherita

and traditional Cheese pizzas appease less adventurous palates. Prefer something other than pizza? Entrees such as Sautéed Mahi Mahi, Ginger Chicken and a dozen pasta dishes offer delicious variety ($10 to $18). I particularly enjoyed the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich served on rustic Garlic Cheese Focaccia. Finish your meal with a decadent old-fashioned Hot Fudge Sundae, Red Velvet Cake or a slice of multi-tiered Chocolate Banana Royale. Delizioso! O

Curtain Call FAU Holds Groundbreaking For New Building

F

lorida Atlantic University (FAU) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 73,000-square-foot building on its Boca Raton campus that will include offices, 14 classrooms, a conference room and a movie complex to be operated by Living Room Theaters, Inc. (LRT). The $19 million facility is planned to meet U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification and is scheduled for completion by next fall. The new building will serve the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. Anchored by a three-story atrium designed as a Main Street, one wing of the first floor will house a state-of-the-art, all-digital movie complex with four separate 50-seat theaters and a cafe. The theaters will offer significant environmental advantages by eliminating the use of celluloid prints. This marks the first and only all-digital theater on a university campus.

“This new movie complex will further enhance the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters standing as a center for culture and the arts,” said Manjunath Pendakur, dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. “During the day, the theaters will be used by FAU’s film study program in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies, allowing students to study film in a true cinema setting … on evenings and weekends, the theaters will be used by LRT for community screenings of foreign, classic and independent films.” The movie complex is funded by a $1.5 million donation from LRT and matching funds from the State of Florida’s Alec P. Courtelis Capital Facility Enhancement Challenge Grant Program, which doubles the gift to $3 million. The architect for the building is Astorino, and the construction firm is Turner Construction. O

The band’s origins date back to 1990 when Matthews, then a Virginia bartender, was persuaded by a friend to record a demo. Two local musicians – drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore – heard the demo and joined Matthews, followed by a few more members (tragedy struck last year when Moore died from an ATV accident). Check out the group’s live show at the Cruzan Amphitheatre, where the guys will perform songs off their newest album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, along with earlier songs and a few covers.

amilies come in many shapes, sizes and colors. My parents grew up in Pennsylvania in large families – my father had eight siblings and my mother had five. I was also born in Pennsylvania, but am an only child. We found housing in Boca Raton by the time I was 3, where my parents stayed until the end of their lives. Boca was small in the 1940s and ’50s, and we knew pretty well all of the full-time residents and winter visitors. Everybody knew everybody – and if they didn’t, it was easy to get to know them quickly. Most children attended Boca Raton Elementary School, and many of us went to the

Community Methodist Church on Royal Palm Road. Our fathers were volunteer firemen, American Legion members or members of the Lion’s Club. Many of our mothers were part of the Legion Auxiliary, baked for the Brownie and Girl Scout sales, served as Room Mothers at our school and drove us on field trips to wonderful places like Africa USA, Ancient America and Waite’s Bird Farm. Where I grew up, just 40 families lived in the little two-bedroom houses on Southeast 5th and 6th Streets, in homes that had been built for Army Air Corp officers. Two houses west of us lived Mr. and Mrs. Prichard; Mr. Prichard was the city

engineer and Mrs. Prichard became my friend. As we got to know each other, I would drop by to visit her. She did a lot of handiwork, noticed my interest and began to teach me. I was around 10 and learned basic crochet techniques, making potholders for my mother and little blankets for my dolls. She also taught me to embroider, which I found fascinating. I believe I still have a dresser scarf I embroidered for my mother. She used it on her chest of drawers for years; I still treasure it even though she scorched it with a cigarette back in her smoking days. Our neighborhood had an everchanging population and most

people moved to other parts of Boca Raton as the town grew and new houses became available. A number of neighbors who lived beside one another built homes next door to each other in Boca Villas, the first modern-day subdivision built in Boca in the early 1950s. Even as it grew, Boca Raton remained a tight-knit community. Many of the older pioneers were related. And just as the newer residents became acclimated to South Florida, so did our relatives who came from the “lands of snow and ice” to visit us. Once they felt sand in their shoes, they moved here too, causing our Boca Raton family to continue its growth. O
