TRANQUILITY June 20, 2021 Hello Dear Friends: Welcome to “Tranquility”.That’s the title of our new on-line exhibition, our third this year in Okinawa. Why “Tranquility”? We think that’s what we all need more of these days. Sometimes we need a quiet space to think and relax, a place to just be. We have chosen works for this exhibition that really enable us to slow down and contemplate. All of these works have their roots in a serene and uncluttered style. These are works that we hope will enable you to keep your life simple and holding closely to a love for natural beauty. We’ve included many gallery favorites as well as artists whom we have rarely shown. The artists include Naoko Miwa, Jun Ogata, Nattawut Sing-Thong, Jonas Wood, John Fraser, Nengah Sujena, Hengki Koentjoro and Masako Kamiya. Many of these works have a truly Japanese aesthetic—even though they are not all from Japanese artists. We invite you to re-connect and explore the beauty and power of the works in this exhibition. TRANQUILITY NAOKO MIWA
Naoko Miwa, the youngest artist to join our gallery, reduces images to their essences. Naoko brings together minimalism, with the immediacy of abstract expressionism, and the intuitive gesture of calligraphy in her exploration of gesture, line, and color. Several of Naoko’s works that we feature in this exhibition incorporate organic, intersecting lines, creating rhythmic patterns. These works create an almost mystical experience through the creation of elusive abstract spaces. Naoko received her BFA and MFA from Tokyo Zokei University. We considered her works to be the most interesting of more than 400 artists whose work we saw at the Tokyo Five College Graduation Exhibition at the National Fine Arts Center.

JONAS WOOD
We’ve been big fans of Jonas Wood for many years and have often shown his work in our gallery. He grew up in Weston, MA, the town next to where Bob went to high school. Jonas’s wife is the ceramic artist Shio Kusaka. He combines art historical references with images of the fabric of his life. He translates the threedimensional world around him into flat color and he confounds expectations of scale and vantage point. Wood attended the University of Washington, Seattle, where he received an MFA in painting and drawing in 2002. This work, Bromeliad is the first of his works calling attention to the plants he loves. TRANQUILITY JOHN FRASER
American artist John Fraser is best known for his collages that are based on a minimalist aesthetic. The materials he uses for the collages are book end papers. His works have a very Japanese aesthetic in their simplicity open space and in their re-use of old materials. The artist arranges the components with clarity, order, an economy of means and are also suggestive of fluidity. They are simultaneously factual records and abstract constructions. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions throughout the United States, Germany, and in Canada, and in group exhibitions in our
gallery and throughout the United States, Germany, Spain, England, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, Hungary, and Iceland.
We have one signed print from John and 3 collages. The artist does not sign his collage works. We will provide a certificate of authenticity for all works.

HENGKI KOENTJORO Hengki has visited us twice in Japan. His works help us find the solace that is often elusive. A master of the black and white photographic medium, his photographs give us the time and the chance to appreciate the world around us, and in the same instance, discover what this planet has to offer. Hengki Koentjoro has received more than 25 awards for his Black and White photography and is one of the few photographers ever selected as a Hasselblad Ambassador. Hengki specializes in capturing the full spectrum that lies amidst the shades of black and white.
Hengki was born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia and studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California.

TRANQUILITY NATTHAWUT SING-THONG
In this exhibition we feature his drawings of stones by Thai artist Natthawut Sing-Thong Stones have traditionally played an important role in many Asian cultures. Prominent large stones are worshipped while gravel was used to designate sacred grounds, as seen at some shrines. Smaller rocks and gravel are used to line ponds and streams. Meanwhile, dry gardens are comprised entirely of stones, with larger stones symbolizing mountains, islands and waterfalls, while gravel and sand replace water.
Caption
The Korean name for these shaped rocks is Suseok, also called viewing stones. Such stones are similar to Chinese scholars’ rocks and Japanese suiseki. Natthawut ’s works reflect a connection to nature and spirituality and his works have been shown in
galleries in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. The artist was born in 1978 and received BFA and MFA from Chiang Mai University. Originally from Ubon Rathchathani, he is currently based in Lamphun

NENGAH SUJENA The paintings of gallery artist Nengah Sujena are about the fundamental relationship between humans and nature. The artist studied in Jogjakarta and returned to Bali after the huge tsunami and has dedicated himself to a deep spiritual practice that is reflected in his works. According to Sujena, the paintings describe the true symbols such as leaves, animals and mountains where nature is a balance for life in the world. An elephant that stands upright and sturdy is a support for the universe. Leaves are a symbol of balancing nature. The triangle in the paintings represents the mountains. The leaves are a symbol of balancing nature.

TRANQUILITY JUN OGATA Jun Ogata’s vision transport the viewers into the realm of minimalism and harmony. Creating invigorating works, Jun Ogata, one of our gallery favorites, brings us on a journey that is tactile and conceptual. His works displays ancient Japanese sensibility of divulging a convincing and refined relationship between the rigid sense of geometry and the freedom of association within the domains of memory and imagination. His astute process is a personal evolution in the realm of abstraction and minimalism, conveying both representational and abstract elements into an unfailing harmony. The works in this exhibition give focus to the beauty of nature and the artist’s belief that “All things are in a state of Flux”– all things and events are constantly changing – a view that he truly values. In the artist’s own words: “My primary emphasis is on the colors. You can see the varied colours that changes with time and season in the garden.” Using colors, the artist is able to tease out the delicate sensibility of the seasons and its association with nature. The dialogue established by texture and his use of colours is captivating in his works, and it is a crucial part of his creations. With vague images of nature, the imaginative use of colours and textures; and seemingly simplistic gestures, Ogata brings us along the entire life-cycle of flowers and the seasons in Japan. It is the artist’s wish that we view his works with our hearts and be immersed in his calm and reflective world. TRANQUILITY MASAKO KAMIYA
Gallery artist Masako Kamiya engages in a dialogue with paint. Her dialogue with the paint and the surface is composed of each dot she makes with the brush. Masako builds up dots of color into half-inch, stalactitelike columns with rich variations in color layers. From a distance the painting is a series of dots, which create larger patterns toward a uniformed center. When observed more closely the third dimension is revealed, a forest of multicolored columns. The surface is dense. Colors on the flat surface of the paper react with the colors on the surface of each stalk when perceived closely. She works intimately on the surface, and also moves away from the surface in order to see how the layers of mark-making negate earlier marks and reveal a new form. Masako is a recipient of the Brother Thomas Fellowship in and the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship. Her mid-career exhibition was held at the Danforth Museum. Masako is a professor in Painting & Foundation Department at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, Massachusetts.
