Gallery artist Zhu Wei [朱偉︱朱伟] is one of China’s most visible contemporary practitioners of the post-Tiananmen period. Zhu is known for his subtly quizzical critique of politics and society in a rapidly evolving China. Faithful to that country’s quintessentially classical artistic medium, Chinese painting, the Beijing-born-and-based Zhu is a painter, print-maker and sculptor. His work has achieved iconic status. In most of his works, his vision often seems anguished and alienated, personal and political at the same time.

NEW ART | NEW YEAR 2021 MASAKO KAMIYA

Masako Kamiya Painting Close-Up Details

NEW ART NEW YEAR 2021 MASAKO KAMIYA

26. “Orion”

27. “Breath”

Gallery artist Masako Kamiya is a recipient of the Brother Thomas Fellowship in 2015 and the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Painting in 2006 and 2010. She is a professor in Painting & Foundation Department at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, Massachusetts. In her painting, she engages in a dialogue with paint. Her statement is composed of each dot she makes with the brush. She works intimately on the surface, and yet she also moves away from the surface in order to see how the layers of mark-making negate earlier marks and reveal a new form. In this way, she slowly arrives at her own truth, which is visual satisfaction. Her paintings are made with gouache on watercolor paper. She builds up dots of color into half-inch, stalactite-like columns with rich variations in color layers. From a distance the painting is a series of dots, which create larger patterns toward a uniformed center. When observed more closely the third dimension is revealed, a forest of multicolored columns. The surface is dense. Colors on the flat surface of the paper react with the colors on the surface of each stalk when perceived closely.

28. “Spirite Jaune”

These are signed works on paper and framed in a white box frame. Framed Size: 60cm x 49cm ¥390,000 | $3800 USD

NEW ART NEW YEAR 2021 THONGCHAI YUKANTAPORNPONG

Gallery favorite Thongchai Yukantapornpong creates art with order and patterns as the bases for his search for pure form. In his work you can see overlapping patterns of line and color in a geometric arrangement with a luminous surface. What is revealed is beauty in the balance between opposing things - between light and dark, movement and stillness, and the creation and disintegration of forms. Ultimately his art is an expression of the distinctly Asian belief in

the truth of the cycle of life and death. 29. “Emalgation”

Thongchai is an associate professor of art at Chiang Mai University in Thailand. His inspiration has roots in many areas including the textiles and clothing worn to the temples. His works reflect the beautiful patterns and colors of Chiang Mai textiles. Thongchai has adopted the same attractive geometric shapes and often includes metallooking colors such as silver.
