Was Hemingway right? Did Cather not deserve the 1923 Pulitzer Prize? This class explores the breadth of Cather’s major works, like O Pioneers!, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and A Lost Lady, to assess the degree of her skill, influence on other writers and place in the American literary canon. Pete Guither, Artistic Director, The Living Canvas; retired Assistant Dean, College of Fine Arts, Illinois State University

Hear more about recent issues in education policy that have been debated, passed or failed at the Illinois State Capitol. Amy Ballinger-Cole, Contract Lobbyist in Illinois Education Policy

Niala Boodhoo, host of the daily statewide public radio talk show, The 21st, will share what she has learned and how she works to provide journalism that helps inform, engage and overcome civic apathy. Niala Boodhoo, Host and Executive Producer for the radio show “The 21st” – a statewide news and talk show produced by Illinois Public Media

Work Zone! Considering Structural Changes for Illinois Government

Tuesday, May 9 Should we revise how we draw district lines for Illinois? Set term limits on any elected officials? Eliminate any constitutional offices? Toss on your hard hat and get ready to work through these issues with crew boss Sheila Simon, who will share safety tips for this hazardous job. Sheila Simon, Visiting Assistant Professor, Southern Illinois University School of Law

Dysfunction in Illinois Politics and Government: How Did We Get Here?

Friday, May 12 If there is one thing that most Illinoisans can agree on, it is that our current politics and government are dysfunctional. How did this happen? We will examine a few of Illinois’s key characteristics, along with the historical and national context, to try to help answer this question. Chris Mooney, Director, Institute of Governmental and Public Affairs, Professor of Political Science, University of Illinois

4. WWI AFTERMATH

May 15, 17, 22, 23 (Monday/Wednesday, Monday/Tuesday) 1:30 - 3:30 pm

Flappers, Bootleggers, Rioters and Ku Kluxers: Domestic Turmoil

Monday, May 15 As the Great War ended in Europe, another sort of war erupted at home. Public battles over prohibition and women’s liberation, rising crime rates, race riots and a surge of nativism in the form of the Ku Klux Klan shattered Americans’ sense of peace. This session will examine the fraught aftermath of WWI, a time that gives new meaning to the idea of “the roaring twenties.” Amy Louise Wood, Professor and Graduate Coordinator, Department of History, ISU

= Walk-in option, $15.00 for noted single sessions, payable at the door.

We Return From Fighting and We Return Fighting

Wednesday, May 17 Join us for a prideful march through the history of the New Negro movement, renaissance, as it battles racial violence alongside economic and political disenfranchisement, learning how African Americans were affected by the Great War. It will capture the emergence of an eclectic Black literature in the aftermath of the war that was supposed to end all wars. Ricardo Cortez Cruz, Professor of English and former Associate Chair, ISU

Fees Per Class – $35.00 for members $45.00 for non-members = Walk-in for Mornings with the Professors, $15.00 for individual session, pay at the door. March 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28 (Fridays) 9:30 - 11:30 am

False Dawn: The League of Nations and International Politics, 1919-1933

Sustainable Nation: Urban Design Patterns to Perfect Communities

Those Insufferable Suffragettes: Making Sense of the Fight for Voting Rights

What Makes a Musical Masterpiece?

Monday, May 22 At the end of WWI, the League of Nations embodied the hope of millions of people for a better, more peaceful world order. In the 1920s and early 1930s; however, the League failed to do much to alter international politics. This class will examine why that failure occurred and explore the role the League played in international security in the years after the Great War. Ross Kennedy, Professor, Department of History, ISU

Tuesday, May 23 Activists who reinvigorated women’s suffrage in the 19th century met their share of critics who characterized them as militant, angry, disreputable and insufferable. Instead of buckling to the criticism, they challenged those who saw them as misguided women to see them as citizens deserving of full rights. Kyle Ciani, Associate Professor, Department of History, ISU

Classes are held at Illinois State University's Alumni Center, 1101 N. Main St, Normal, IL, unless otherwise noted. For more information or to register, go to www.SeniorProfessionals.IllinoisState.edu or call (309) 438-2160.

Friday, March 31 The country faces urgent opportunities and crises that compel us to change faster than we have ever before. History shows us since de Tocqueville’s tour of the country in 1830, the country has been built by citizens working together. Though recent societal trends are skewing toward disengagement and isolation, Sustainable Nation demonstrates how urban design patterns are the tool to unlock a new wave of community activism. Doug Farr, President, Farr Associates, Chicago and instrumental in developing Uptown Normal Friday, April 7 There are many works of classical art music that are considered by most listeners to be masterpieces. What are their shared characteristics, and why have some composers produced many of them? Do these works arise at an intersection of skill and inspiration? Jonathan Green, Provost and Dean of the Faculty, Illinois Wesleyan University

From the Kitchen to the Courts

Friday, April 14 We are only two generations removed from the time women's only options were homemaking and child rearing. Hutchison will explore the evolving role of women on the sports courts and how that role has been influenced by society and the actions of the legal courts. Jill Hutchison, Retired Women’s Basketball Coach, ISU

In consideration of folks with asthma and allergies, please minimize use of perfumes and colognes.

= Walk-in option, $15.00 for noted single sessions, payable at the door.

One Hundred Years of Native American Sovereignty in Central Illinois

Friday, April 21 Native Americans in Central Illinois did not go gently into that good night. Accustomed to trade partnerships with French and then British corporate concerns, they established successful understanding of respective rights and obligations with these Europeans. At the end the American Revolution the British signed over the lands of Illinois to the Americans. The Americans looked at Illinois as land destined for American families, land from which Indians were to be removed. Today we call this ethnic cleansing. Greg Koos, Executive Director Emeritus, McLean County Museum of History

Jim Crow's Lengthy Stay in Bloomington-Normal

Friday, April 28 Little known today, racial segregation became solidly established here in the early 20th Century and was only ended with much struggle from the 1940s into the 1960s. What happened to Jesse Fell's community? Why was it OK that blacks were kept out of restaurants, hotels, and the whites' swimming areas? Mark Wyman, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, ISU Photographs are taken during Senior Professional programs. Explore the Reddick Mansion in Ottawa and Farnsworth (Glass) House in Plano Thursday, May 18 7:30 am – 5:00 pm

Discover an unusual Italianate-style home, distinct for the period of the 1850s, and a more modern structure from the 1950s. Historically important and architecturally unique, the Reddick Mansion anchors Washington Square in Ottawa, the site of the first Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Built in 1855, this charming 22-room Italianate mansion was possibly the most expensive and ornate private home built in Illinois before the Civil War. Farnsworth House is an exemplary representation of both the International style of architecture as well as the modern movement’s desire to juxtapose the sleek, streamline design of modern structure with the organic environment of the surrounding nature. Accompanying us on the bus will be Russel Francois, architect and firm principal from Francois Associates Architects, LLC, sharing his vast knowledge about architecture. $55.00 for members | $70.00 for non-members Cost includes transportation, site fees, a snack and lunch at Uptown Grill in LaSalle. The bus will depart at 7:30 am from the ISU Office of Parking and Transportation parking lot, 709 N Main St, Normal, and will return at 5:00 pm. Wear comfortable shoes for extended periods of walking and standing.
