June 12 is Loving Day Loving Day is an unofficial holiday celebrating the Supreme Court decision of Loving v Virginia (1967).This decision made it illegal to restrict interracial couples in the United States. Based upon the case of Mildred and Richard Loving (who were arrested at night while asleep in their home for the crime of being interracially married), this decision overturned laws in 16 states, including Maryland, which still restricted interracial marriages, affecting not only blacks and whites, but Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics and other ethnic groups. Even as late as 1945, at the end of the Second World War, there were 30 states that prohibited interracial couples. Loving Day is about fighting prejudice through education and building a sense of community among people who engage in meaningful interracial and intercultural relationships. Brides And Grooms Expo applauds true love in all its forms and celebrates Loving Day for the remarkable changes brought about in a mere generation.
