Located just 60km from the rustle and bustle of the Sydney CDB, Camden is an area steeped in heritage, adventure and natural charm, it also home to the Macarthur Pirates BMX Club. The club, much like the area around it, is booming as the urban sprawl continues its push into the west and south-‐west of Sydney bringing with it new people to area through new developments. Development brings with it family and its families who are taking up the sport pushing the numbers of the Macarthur Pirates higher and higher. The Pirates expansion hasn’t been all smooth sailing though; the growth of the club has uncovered challenges and ones that are at the core of sports – the need for volunteers and officials. In fact it was the stark realisation the club was lagging behind in their officials numbers that spurred the club to action. President of the club, Mark Osborne spoke to The Dirt about the club and some of the work they have done and are doing for what will be a bumper 2014. “Our club started to boom for what seemed no particular reason apart from the population expansion in this area,” Mark said. “There’s a lot of friends of friends joining the club and we then found ourselves to be the biggest club in NSW with the least amount of officials.” Monthly, a report is sent to each of the states detailing the numbers of officials each state has which is further broken down to a club by club analysis. Becoming an official has been made easier with the introduction nearly 12 months ago of the online officials quiz where anyone wanting to be involved in the sport can take part in the quiz and join BMX Australia if they are not already a 7 member. “Geez, we better do something about that; it doesn’t look good on paper,” was the reaction from

2

Osborne when it was revealed Macarthur’s numbers were quite low. “In kids sport, or any sport, you are always struggling to find people to help out at events. “We have club events with up to 150 riders and that’s where BMX NSW said to us we need to get our ratio of riders and officials right, you can’t run a club event that size with only a handful of officials.” From there the club has been working hard to bring more officials on board – and it’s working. From having a small group of officials at the club, they have now become one of the highest growth clubs for the recruitment of officials. And that will come in very handy for 2014. “We held the Macarthur Open earlier this year and I think that was the largest single day event BMX NSW has ever held – we had 630 riders compete. “That brought us to the attention of BMX NSW on how good we can run events and that played a part in allowing us to be selected to host the 2014 State Titles as well.” In his seventh year at the club, Osborne credits the work of the committee to the successes they are enjoying. Joined on the executive committee by club stalwarts Wayne Austin and Fred Furner, the trio are among the longest serving at the club. “There’s been a good core of people who have stuck with the committee for the last 4 or 5 years,” Osborne said. “One of the main problems I have is, if you start a project towards the end of the year, you really want to see it through and see it finished off. “The state titles are great example. There are a lot of us on the committee who worked on the proposal, so we all want to stay on board and see it through.” And with such a huge year planned, the

8

3

benefits for the riders at the club are profound. “ A lot of our riders are young and don’t travel as much and for a our newer members it will be good for them to see a State Title at their own track. We’ll be able to get them involved more and then hopefully they get the taste for it and go on with it further.” Developing the riders for higher competition is already in full swing. With 24 riders representing the club at the 2013 Subaru BMX National Championships in Queensland this year, the riders returned home with 7 Aussie plates. Furthermore, the club achieved 2 World plates from the World Championships in July. Over the last month the track at Kirkham Park, Elderslie has undergone some changes but not to make it too “gnarly”. “We’ve just changed it up a bit, we didn’t do anything too gnarly or anything. We worked with Brett Barnes from Dirtz, he came in and had a good look at the track.

Become an Official The Level 1 course is specifically targeted at the official who desires to assist in the conduct of club racing and includes all of the basics into officiating at a BMX track. The course requires Candidates to read an online manual and complete an online quiz. www.bmxaustralia.com.au

“Because a lot of our members are young we didn’t want a gnarly supercross style track with canyons they are going to disappear in and mountains they have to climb. So we just wanted something fast and flowing – which was what our track has been renowned for. “With it being the same now for a few years we thought not only just our club members but also visiting club’s members were finding it a bit boring – it just need to be spiced up a bit”. Since the revamp, there have been 2 club events on the new track and Osborne is yet to hear a bad word about the changes. The Macarthur Pirates have taken what was a significant concern and turned that into a positive for the club. Very much a chicken and egg scenario of where do you start first – get the officials or get riders – the club has embraced its growth and the trust of the sport to hold significant events for the upcoming year. Already hosting one of the sports largest one day events the Macarthur Open, make sure you book in the 2 long weekends of 2014 when the BMXtreme carnival (Pre-‐titles, Mighty 11’s) is held in June and the State Championships in October.

It’s been a crazy year for Bunbury’s Lauren Reynolds, she missed the opening rounds of the BMX Australia National Series to stay home to relax after a massive Olympic year in 2012 before winning both rounds in Perth later in January. Debuting on a new bike in 2013 there was much to be excited about and the US was a big part of that. It’s fair to say though July was a stellar month for Lauren when she finished second to fellow Australia Caroline Buchanan at the World Championships in New Zealand. “My preparation into that race was really good. I was super confident and really fresh,” Reynolds said on her way to see a Perth specialist. The unplanned return trip home due to a devastating knee injury allowed her time to reflect on the year as she spoke to The Dirt. “I was excited to get second, it’s been one of my best results. It gave me a lot of confidence knowing I had a big end of the year to go. “2013 has been one of my best years, I got a 5th at the first World Cup, then a third in Holland and a second at Worlds. So out of the major events I’ve had 2 podiums. “Overall, I’ve been getting consistently betters results.” Reynolds said. Unfortunately, the great year Lauren was experiencing came to an end when she was taken down during the Fresno round of the ABA Series. 12 “There was a split straight where you could do either straight, Mariana Pajon and I took the pro

2

straight where we were jumping when Dominque Daniels took the other straight. “As we came into the land where the 2 straights meet, I was still in the air when she came under my wheel and just completely took me out. “My right leg took the full impact, but at that point I didn’t know how bad the injury was; I continued to ride a few laps but really struggled with it. “So I had scans later that week in Chula Vista where they said I had torn the ACL, bone bruising and other stuff I can’t remember.” The injury brought Reynolds home to seek further medical attention back home where she was booked in for a knee reconstruction and won’t be back on the bike until early 2014. “It’s only a few races in America this year that I’ll miss so its not as bad as it sounds. And since 2009 I’ve never had more than 2 weeks off the bike so it will be a good recovery period for me Up beat about it, Reynolds said it was a good to “reset and re-‐group” ahead of next year while being with family. “I’ve got no rush at all, I’m just going to get myself strong and fit again and back at 100% so I’ll be set for next year.”

As we move into November five states have already held their Championships. Last month we took a look at Queensland, this month we catch up with New South Wales, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Western Australia

The 2013 State Championships proved to again be a massive success. With over 590 entries and the event held in the Country this year at the recently remodelled Kalgoorlie BMX Club Track, now also known as “KalVegas” The Eastern Goldfields BMX Club now boasts a new 6m Start Ramp and state of the art facility it was looking to be a fantastic weekend. Weather was a cool 35 degrees. Thanks must go to the hardworking Kalgoorlie Committee that has been working tirelessly on upgrading the facility for the past 12 months. The new Kalvegas commentators room fitted out with dual timing screens so commentators could see and report lap times live as they were happening, proved also to be a great success, directly alongside is the new Scoring and timing suite (yes its very upmarket as well, no cables lying around, all hidden behind doors) A new format for the Western Australia State Championships, introducing Dynamites and Time 14 was something we had not done before, and Trials, with an Elite Super Final on the Saturday attracted many riders and spectators to get in on the action.

2 3

Along with the debut performance of the Mini Wheelers Class, and the DJ specially flown in from the Northwest with some great tunes, the atmosphere was electric. With an outstanding 10 riders the Mini Wheelers class was to kick off the event with everyone trackside to watch these guys (mainly girls) speeding around the track. Chequered flags waving and our fantastic commentators following their every move, sometimes even unable to keep up. What an amazing start to the Mini Wheelers in Western Australia at a State Championships, we cant wait to see more enthusiastic little riders on the track next year. They crossed the finish line for their last race, flags still waving madly. Their session came to an end, it was time for them to kick back and wait for trophy presentations later that afternoon. Smiles on their faces, as well as parents was priceless. Introducing the Time trials at State Championships made out for some more great racing, with the Super Final being won by Elite Men Joshua Lathwell, and Elite Women, Kirsten Dellar. Sprockets and Cruisers were next on the

track to battle it out. The cruisers were flying around the track Saturday Afternoon, the track proving to be too fast for some. We saw a few heavy crashes amongst the older riders but some outstanding competitive racing. At the end of an awesome first day, it was time to get ready for the 20” classes on Sunday. Sunday morning came and we traditionally start the day with all Clubs dressed and decorated in their Club colours for the march. With 2 awards up for grabs, Best Presented and Best Represented club, we saw some very interesting new tactics. One club even had a Club Song, which we are sure will be a new inclusion for next years Championships. Best represented club went to Eastern Goldfields, and best presented for a 2nd year in a row was Tom Price. It was great to see the Club Riders and some parents getting in on the action. Racing got underway and it was full steam ahead for the 20” riders. There were some thrills and spills as the 20” riders took to the track and a lot of great battles between them. Pro Riders were great to watch as they hit up the new “Kalvegas” Pro Straight and the Elites did not disappoint to show off their style and 15 skill.

4 5

Racing was finished and it was time to head off for Trophy Presentations. With shiny new Gold Cups in hand and smiles on their much photographed faces, riders were ready to go home and start thinking about next years event and to reflect on what a terrific weekend of racing was had by all riders. Well done to all Riders, our excellent Volunteer Officials, and the fabulous Kalgoorlie crew for putting on such a great weekend providing riders and spectators with such outstanding facilities, it was enjoyed by everyone. 2014 will see the WA State championships back in the City at Southside BMX Club, ready for another action packed weekend of racing.

It is great to have racers from far & wide sign up for the adventure and take on the locals. All up we had just over 300 riders. This was also to be our first event with online nomination, transponders & eZeventing. At times it felt like we might choke taking a bite that size. But we made it thanks to the help of Lauren at BMXA, the fabulous Lyndon Downing & much appreciated guidance and assistance from Marty and Karen.

Northern Territory

October marks a special time for many BMXers in Australia. That rings true in the NT as well. The NTBMX Titles is the event that inspires the topend riders to reach their peak. . Satellite City were this years host club and even early in the year there were signs that they planned to make this event a run away winner. News that the track had been upgraded had spread. Several also looked forward to taking on the pro straight which already had a bit of a reputation amongst the facebook followers. After talking with several of the crowd that were present it was clear that the hard work put in by the Satellite City committee, club members, volunteers from other clubs and sponsors had laid on an event that had put a smile on pretty well everyone’s face.

The pre-‐meet saw most start getting their race face on. Action in the Dynamite & Crackerjack classes gave us a taste of anticipation for the upcoming titles event. Thursday night things went pear shaped when a huge storm flooded the pro & third straight. Hands on deck with garden tools, buckets & a dirty great pump into the early hours of the morning sorted that out though. Come Friday evening the stage was set again for some awesome BMX racing. When you gather over 50 sprockets & mini-‐wheelers you tend to see at least twice as many parents 16 cheering them on. A great way to spend a tropical night in Darwin. There were some memorable battles in the younger classes &

6

the cruisers kept the crowd gasping in between the cheers. A few of the stand out finishers were Ian Orr in the 8 boys, Danny Galea in the 35-‐39 men’s cruiser & Reece Roach in the pro cruiser. Saturday night was all 20”. Some very talented riders lined up on the gates in several classes. Matt Juster was back in town on his way through from a great ride at Chula Vista the weekend before. This was also his 15th NTBMX Titles. In fact half the Yes team was there including Josh McLean & Hayden Jones. Add in some of the locals Ravine Kelly, Ben Pettit & Talon Dobson and the pro men’s was going to be one to watch. Pro ladies was interesting also with Gemma Sloane, Tahlia Waldron, Jessica Baker taking on locals Taylah Maurice & Kate Neaylon. Racing progressed a frenetic pace. So many great races to watch but they won’t all fit here. So glad we used transponders. Some of the tight wins went to Jacob Brine 9 boys, Rory Fairchild in the 10 boys, Maddison Brown 11 girls, Luke Tahney Grubb 11 boys. The pro ladies traded places in many motos. In the end it was Taylah Maurice that put in some fine laps to lift the winner’s trophy. Pro men did not disappoint. This race was nuts. Matt Juster held on for the win. At the end of the night most people were on a high from being involved in a great night of BMX. Plans are being made for the 2014 titles in Alice Springs along with the Masters Games. It would be BMXcellent to see you there.

New South Wales

During the NSW State Championships at Lake Macquarie, the 9 Years Boys class saw twins Jayden and Harry Chambers riding for the Manning Valley BMX Club (Taree). In what could possibly be a first (let The Dirt Know otherwise…), the twins both made the final before Jayden came in at 5th place while Harry collected 7th. Asked what is it like to ride against your twin brother, Jayden said: "It's hard when you are in the same semis and quarters because you know that there's less chance of both of you getting 17 through."

7

While Harry said: "When we are in the same race I still go as fast as possible but I try to be aware of where Jayden is just because, I don't know why, I just do...." Well done boys!! Photos: Aaron Single

Tasmania

The 2013 Tasmanian state titles saw riders travel from Queensland and Victoria this year and was held at the Wynyard BMX Park. This club is a newly formed one and has only been open for about eight months. Everyone that rode gave them the thumbs up. The class of the weekend was the 19 plus challenge which saw three family members contesting the same age. Christopher Ellis (cousin to ) Reece Ellis( Brother in law ) to Aaron Brown and finishing in that order. Wynyard BMX park riders almost all of whom are new to the sport performed extremely well. Tasmania will be looking at running the State Titles next year to coincide with the Victorian State Titles to make it two State Titles in two weeks. Photos: Allison Murfett

2013 King of Dirt The 2013 King of Dirt competition was held last weekend as part of the Newton’s Nation event in Newcastle, NSW, which also included the second leg of the ‘Be the Influence’ Boarder X Series and the ASA Scooter Competition. The three straight jumps, created by Damian Connolly and Josh Stead, with a 6m start ramp allowed riders to showcase their tricks while dealing with some challenging conditions including strong winds and high temperatures throughout the event. With over 30 competitors coming from NSW & QLD to enter either the Amateur or Pro categories, the format for the qualifiers on the Saturday afternoon allowed riders to complete four runs with the best two scores taken. The Amateur field showed some great promise with a number of riders from the local area showing off their skills in front of the Novocastrian crowd. Oliver Frank qualified in first place followed by Andrew Keevers and Matt Walker in third. The Pro qualifiers heated up quickly with a mixture of tricks displayed and the rider imposed sanction of 10 push ups for any jumps missed/bailed proved to be a great incentive. Qualifying in first place for the Pro comp was Nathan Philps, with Brandon Burt & Dale O’Brien in second and third respectively. The finals on Sunday were much anticipated but due to the strong winds, they were cancelled for the riders safety. A special mention should also go to Andy Buckworth who came and showed his support for the event as a spectator due to a broken foot from the Dew Tour in San Francisco in October.

Results: Amateur st 1 Place – Oliver Frank 2nd Place – Andrew Keevers 3rd Place – Matt Walker 4th Place – Brendon White 5th Place – Josh Williams

Pro 1st Place – Nathan Philps 2nd Place – Brandon Burt 3rd Place – Dale O’Brien 4th Place – Thomas Glew 5th Place – Boyd Hilder

HPP CORNER Paul Sales -‐ BMXAHPP

BMX riders need to optimize muscle mass and minimize body fat to achieve an optimal power: weight ratio. This requires a carefully balance intake. Consuming excess total energy can lead to an increase of body fat. However, restricting energy intake to attempt to achieve an ultra-‐lean physique can cause loss of muscle mass. BMX riders need to consume a variety of nutrient-‐dense foods and match carbohydrate needs to their training load. Protein requirements are similar to other sprint athletes, being around 1.6-‐1.8g/kg of body weight. Preparation for competition Body fuel stores are not a limiting factor for single sprint events. However, when contesting a number of races over a day, fuel demands can be high. Riders should aim to begin competition hydrated, with a comfortable stomach and with sufficient fuel on board. In most cases, BMX riders can prepare for competition by maintaining their usual healthy eating habits. Generally, carbohydrate loading is not required for sprint events. Longer events such as the Madison Track event may be an exception. Competition Day Food and Fluids Pre-‐ competition meals should be familiar and individualized. For BMX riders, the meal does not necessary need to be a high energy meal but should contain foods that the rider enjoys and tolerates. BMX riders need to assess the opportunity between events to eat and drink. The aim is to consume sufficient food and fluid throughout the day to ensure the rider is in peak condition at the end of the day when the competition really counts. Post competition Muscles are primed to replace glycogen immediately after exercise. The more depleted the muscle, the faster it will replenish glycogen. This you can only do if carbohydrate is supplied to muscles. Best recovery is achieved in the first 20 minutes after exercise, but the following 24 hours is also important. If sufficient carbohydrate is supplied, glycogen can be restored after 8 hours as opposed to 24-‐36 hours. Travelling Athletes often fly in to compete 1 – 2 days before racing. Managing jetlag, in particular minimising dehydration, is important to see rider ready for competition on arrival. Athletes who travel regularly, need to be aware that travelling reduces training loads therefore reduces energy requirements. Adjusting food intake to accommodate the reduced requirements can help avoid unwanted weight gain. In the next article I will discuss competition day nutrition including hydration and what you need to 28 consume in the form of macronutrients (Carbs, fats, proteins) and samples of foods containing such nutrients.
