Goodwill Hosts Multiple Hiring Events

T

he National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (NCIA) held a hiring event at Goodwill headquarters at 222 East Redwood Street. NCIA was recruiting for Direct Service staff such as Residential Counselors, Case Mangers and Job Coaches for their Youth, Adult and Vocational programs.

Penguin Staffing to host a hiring event at our headquarters. By partnering with PenguinStaff and the Hospitality Training Institute, Goodwill was able to provide its participants with hands on training in the areas of hospitality, including Bartend-

ing, Banquet Service, Safety Courses, and English For Hospitality. 30 participants also were placed into temporary positions as banquet servers!

NCIA, located in Woodlawn, MD provides individual care, concern, and treatment for those with intellectual and emotionally disabilities and those involved in the criminal justice system. Goodwill has worked with NCIA since 2010. The event was a major success, there were over twenty-five candidates that were pre-screened and sixteen interviewed. All sixteen candidates that were interviewed have pending job offers. Goodwill also partnered with

May Career Fair Success Every year during the first full week of May, Goodwill agencies across the US and Canada celebrate the power of work through local events and promotions. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. held its career fair on May 8th and 17 employers attended. The career fair had three resource vendors—one offering free cell phones for those who qualified and two educational vendors. Over 263 people sought employment at the career fair and several interviews were obtained.

Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce Holds Training Event at Goodwill Baltimore County Chamber Of Commerce President Keith Scott and Vice President Christine Crawford did an interactive presentation to over 50 students at Goodwill to help them better prepared for interviews. The subjects covered were how to interview, body posture, language, eye contact, and how to sit when interviewing. The entire group enjoyed the presentation and looks forward to a return from the Chamber.

Lower Shore Career Center Celebrates 15 Year Anniversary

The Lower Shore Career Center, located in Salisbury, MD celebrated its 15 year anniversary on May 9th. The Career Center has helped those looking for job training and placement services since 1998 and offers clerical and computer training, QuickBooks training, customer service training and cashier training. The Center held an Open House and several celebratory events throughout the week including presentations and demonstrations from businesses in the community. Over 25 people attended the Open House, including Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton.

Program for Seniors in Harford and Cecil Counties Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. is now offering help for individuals 55+ who need job placement assistance in Harford & Cecil Counties. A new partner of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), participants are paid the minimum wage while they gain skills working part-time in nonprofit or public agencies. Goodwill will administer SCSEP under a USDOL grant and in cooperation with Senior Service America, Inc., the national SCSEP grantee in Maryland. The SCSEP is an equal opportunity program. The SCSEP is the largest federally-funded program specifically targeting older adults seeking employment and training as-

sistance. SCSEP gives special attention to seniors as well as veterans most in need including those with low income, poor employment history, physical disabilities and language barriers. Most SCSEP participants work part-time at a local nonprofit or public agency serving their communities. This paid work experience prepares many of them to find future employment outside of the SCSEP program.

Goodwill Continues to Be Recognized for its Leadership and Performance Lisa Rusyniak, Goodwill President & CEO, was recently recognized for her leadership and commitment to Goodwill through two awards programs. She was the recipient of a SmartCEO Brava! Award, which celebrates top female CEOs who combine their irrepressible entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for giving back to the community. Lisa was also recognized as one of the Daily Record’s Most Admired CEOs. This award identifies Maryland business executives for the tremendous accomplishments they have made so far in their career. They are judged on professional experience, community involvement and a commitment to inspiring change. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. was also recognized as the winner of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s Business Breakthrough Award in the 200+ Employee category. The awards program honors Maryland businesses for breakthrough performance, innovation and growth.

Employee Buys His First Car With a Little Help from Goodwill & Vehicles for Change Goodwill’s Financial Wellness counselors assisted Goodwill employee Gene in obtaining a vehicle through our partnership with Vehicles for Change. Gene is a single father with a son who has a disability who had trouble with getting to and from work and doctor’s appointments. Vehicles for Change and Goodwill held a fundraiser to help Gene get on the road to success. Vehicles for Change helps low-income families achieve the financial and personal independence that comes from owning a vehicle. Gene was awarded a 2001 Toyota Corolla at the end of his fundraiser. Congratulations Gene!

Clear Your Clutter Day at Harford Community College Harford Community College held its annual Clear Your Clutter Day on April 27th and had over 385 cars come through the event. Goodwill had a donation trailer at the event and collected items from over 325 contributors, filling two trailers!

Goodwill Awards Luncheon Goodwill Held its 57th Annual Awards Luncheon on May 2, 2013 at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. The guest speaker was Ms. Gaynell Colburn and several awards were given out, including Goodwill’s Employee of the Year, Achiever of the Year, Scholarship recipients, Graduate of the Year and Employer of the Year. Goodwill participated in Baltimore Fashion Week’s UNDER show in late April, a show designed for models 5’6 and under. Goodwill donated 20 outfits to designers, who refashioned the looks to show that fashion can be found on any budget. All outfits that were donated cost $20 or less.

Goodwill Team Members Become Nationally Certified Twenty two Goodwill staff members became certified Job Developers through Career TEAM’s national program on May 31st. The training ensures those enrolled in the program are effectively communicating a common message to all clients served, through interactive role playing and group exercises.
