Fashion vs. Art Article “Many Stripes of Pattern”, written by Suzy Menkes focuses on the famous artist Piet Mondrian. The artist is known for his geometric pattern portraying a specific color theme and style. The article goes into depth of how the geometric pattern has turned into a fashion trend seen on dresses and shoes. The color palette for this magazine feel assignment are yellow, red, blue and black. Instead of focusing on the pattern on clothes I painted a models face with the black stripes and colored effect. The cover page shows the depth of the design, and use text to pop out the main focus points of the article. Inside layout is the model laying across over 150 sheets of paper with the words “Art”, “Fashion” and “Be You”. The back layout is shoes with a continuation of the format. The article is about expressing yourself, which is why the photographs show expressing who you are.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries Five Guys Burger & Fries has been a favorite since 1986. As the family grew so did their business. The redesign is very simple and brings them back to their traditional ways. The color palette is black and white with their traditional checkered background on the bottom half of the bag. Five seeds on the burger and the five sided pentagon represent the five brothers. And yes, I’ll have fries with that.

“Sketch It Out” Written By Barbie A paper book product based on the Neenah Paper Company established in 1873, it holds the award for the oldest continously operating mill. The color scheme varies of bright colors of blue, pink, orange, yellow, and black, the colors used on the old vintage Barbie boxes and products especially Barbie lunch boxes. The idea is based on a sketchbook theme, built by an upcoming fashion student named Barbie Robert (the traditional name of the first Barbie). Her sketcbbook hold designs, fashion photographs, and more. Page four consists of Barbie accessories from the vintage times, for example hair brush, blow dryer and more. The old camera opens up to a photograph of a model in old suitcase holding an older camera model. The next page is an envelope inside is two tickets, one a signed photograph of Barbie, “Thanks dolls for coming xo Barbie”. The next ticket is for her first fashion show. Dates in 1959, when the first Barbie was made. The tickets are $3, the cost of the first Barbie, and stating 125 outfits for careers, which was how Barbie was first invented for. Next couple of pages consist of transparent paper, so Barbie’s outfit changes for her fashion show. The last page is the original Barbie, in her bathing suit and black traditional heels. Finally the last page informs you of the information of the Neenah Company, displaying color, type, and weight of paper. It also displays the types of paper from their “Environmental Line”, which is how this sketchbook was built. Hope you enjoy the fashion show!

GETTING THE FIRE STARTED Now that you know what it takes to have a safe campfire it is time to learn how to start one. There are many different ways to build a campfire, and once you build a few you can certainly develop your own method. The most common way to assemble a fire is into a teepee shape. A teepee fire is easy to start , can be kept conveniently small, is easy to control, and the shape guides the smoke up and away from guests at the fire.

In order to build a teepee fire: 1) Assemble tinder – dried grasses, pine needles, wood shavings, shredded paper, lint, wood dust, or fallen bird nests. 2) Kindling – thin, dry twigs built in a teepee shape over your tinder. 3) Add larger sticks following the basic teepee shape. 4) Light the tinder; add larger pieces of wood as the fire catches.

If you are planning on cooking over the fire, it will greatly benefit you to dig a shallow hole to expose bare soil. Build your teepee fire in this pit and once it has gotten going you can push down the coals. A grate can be easily laid over the colas for cooking. Clean up is easy and the chance of the fire spreading is small. Also, for fires that you are planning to cook over; be sure that the wood that you are using for the fire is not treated in any way. The fumes that come off of treated wood can be absorbed by your food, and are harmful if ingested.

Fare of the Wilderness: Exhibit Museum exhibit, “Roughing It: Fare of the Wilderness” took over a year to design. Working with a team of individuals at the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales, put together a wilderness exhibit for all ages. Entering the exhibit, you see a real life tent, wood fire, hot dogs, wood benches, and cases of pots and more. There is a game to see if you will survive in the wilderness on your own. Following the triangles filled with steps it will bring you through the exhibit as you learn more about the wilderness and different types of cooking that can be done. The exhibit has a very earthy, nature feel color palette. There are many different types of greens but a main color that was used in all the panels was gray to make the cream pop. Photos were from cook books, magazines, brochures that date back from when the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts first began (with full permission). The exhibit has brochures to take home filled with different recipes even one to make your own Girl Scout Cookies. The adventure is just the beginning to survive at this exhibit.
