more of Sinatra’s sound. “I think what I felt about the Broadway show was that it was ungroomed and needed pruning.” Tharp told The Chicago Tribune. “I lightened the Tribune show. I took out some of the shadows in the underbrush. I made it more interior.” She changed the story from two acts to one and did away with a singing character. “It clears the pathway for Sinatra’s voice,” Tharp said. “Now we are just free to go.” COME FLY AWAY opens with a rare recording of Sinatra’s unaccompanied voice. Music Supervisor David Pierce, who recently worked with Michael Buble on his Christmas album, helped select the songs for COME FLY AWAY.

rank Sinatra’s music and legend. Twyla Tharp’s choreography and vision. It’s a match made in a slice of cultural heaven called COME FLY AWAY. Using Sinatra’s voice, a big band and 14 dancers, Tharp weaves a seductive story of the rise and fall of romance. It’s musical unlike any you have seen before. The show opened on Broadway in 2010 to the delight of Sinatra and Tharp fans... and critics. The New York Times called it “spectacular and dazzling” and “an electrifying celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra.” From Broadway, COME FLY AWAY moved to Vegas where Tharp added even

He used a technically advanced process to remove Sinatra’s solo voice from recordings and blend that voice with live accompaniment, according to The Grand Rapids Press. “We used some well-known recordings, some rare,” Pierce said. “Sinatra is so iconic. He introduced ‘The Shadow of Your Smile’ (in his Las Vegas nightclub act) at the Sands. In this show, it’s like hearing this song the very first time it was ever sung.” In compiling the music, Pierce used recordings from 1957 through the 1980s. Among the songs you’ll hear: “Fly Me To The Moon,” “My Way,” “New York, New York” and “Witchcraft.” “You feel like he’s right before your eyes,” he said.

music composed by Tchaikovsky. “I’m really looking forward to Dance Theatre’s production of Sleeping Beauty,” said dancer Alessandra Ball, currently in her eighth season with the company. “The ballet is magical, and I’m excited to see how Jean-Pierre brings the story to life on stage.” Bonnefoux plans to draw on his past to bring something special to his version of Sleeping Beauty. “I have a unique perspective on Petipa and Tchaikovsky because of my tenure as a principal dancer at Paris Opera Ballet and New York City Ballet,” said Bonnefoux. This March take your family on a whimsical journey to an enchanted kingdom, as the beloved childhood story of Sleeping Beauty is sure to leave audiences of all ages feeling happily ever after.

leeping Beauty’s timeless tale of a beautiful princess, a dashing prince and the triumph of good over evil with a single kiss has delighted audiences of all ages for years. In March 2012, North Carolina Dance Theatre performs Sleeping Beauty for the first time. President and Artistic Director JeanPierre Bonnefoux, who is known for creating spectacular classical ballets including Nutcracker, Cinderella and Peter Pan, is choreographing Dance Theatre’s production. “Sleeping Beauty is the essence of classical ballet, and I believe Charlotteans will enjoy the opulent sets and costumes of this spectacular performance,” said Bonnefoux. The ballet was originally choreographed in 1890 by Marius Petipa, with

Opera Carolina

Opera Carolina Stages Tchaikovsky’s Masterpiece Eugene Onegin Romantic Russian Drama Headlined by International Performers

A

n evening of thrilling operatic moments awaits operagoers as Opera Carolina premieres Eugene Onegin, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s fiery drama of love and regret. From its powerful arias to vibrant orchestral writing reminiscent of Tchaikovsky’s beloved symphonies and ballets, the opera’s commanding score underlines the intensity of the ageless story about youth’s longing for true love, even in the face of tragedy. Opera Carolina’s first staging of this grand Russian opera brings together performers with rave reviews from some of the finest opera houses around the world for Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. The cast is led by Russian baritone Vasily Ladyuk and Russian soprano Dina Kuznetsova as Onegin and Tatyana, and stars High Point, N.C. native and Metropolitan Opera star tenor Anthony Dean Griffey. Tchaikovsky, who created some of the world’s most beloved music, scored his first true opera house success with Eugene Onegin. This soul-searching, passionate drama is based on the novel of

the same name by Alexander Pushkin, the most influential Russian literary figure of the early Romantic period. Opera Carolina’s well-crafted production transports the audience from the lush Russian forest to the wintry beauty of the Russian countryside as a stellar ensemble captures the potent drama and masterful musical score. “Tchaikovsky’s Onegin is traditional grand opera, in the style of Italian romantic opera, but with a full measure of Russian pathos. It is a beautiful expression of the classic nature of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. “Prepare to be moved!” Opera Carolina’s production of Eugene Onegin performs over two weekends: March 17, 22 and 25 at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. For ticket information, call 704.372.1000 or visit operacarolina.org The 2011-2012 Season of Opera Carolina is underwritten by a generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Private Bank. The performance presenting sponsor for Eugene Onegin is Time Warner Cable.

relevant throughout the ages and the grandeur of the orchestration is equally spellbinding. “The music itself toggles between huge forces and a single voice, juxtaposing majesty and intimacy with ease. The musical style is equally inclusive, ranging from simple chant to almost rock-inspired rhythmic sections. On February 24th and 25th you can enjoy in the work in a new way, while sipping cocktails and sampling hors d’oeuvre in the Knight Theater. Enjoy a beverage while listening to the explosive combination of the Oratorio Singers and Charlotte Symphony, and participate in a postconcert activity with the strains of “O Fortuna” ringing in your ears. A composition of huge proportions, Carmina burana calls for a 200-person chorus, full orchestra and soloists. The subject matter is sensual throughout, covering love, lust, the pleasures of drinking and the heightened moods evoked by springtime. However primal, the themes have remained

What It Takes For STOMP To Bring The Beat One big question always comes up when STOMP, the long-running Off Broadway and touring hit, returns: What the heck are they going to bang on next? The answer is usually “You never know!” STOMP is a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy. The show originated in Britain in 1991 and began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February 1994, winning an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for Most Unique Theater Experience. It’s become an international percussion sensation that has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.”

Over a period of one week, the cast of STOMP goes through quite a few “instruments,” in addition to some other things that keep the show running: 30 brooms 8 lids 5 short bins 10 6-foot long, 6-inch wide poles 15 pounds of sand 4 blocks of athlete’s chalk 12 pairs of drumsticks 200 liters of water 8 bananas

(No word on whether said bananas are Chiquita or not.)

12 boxes of matches
