There’s a Lot to Like About Sister Act

I

f you enjoyed the movie Sister Act, don’t tell the good sisters that we told you this, but you’re likely to enjoy Sister Act the musical even more. Sister Act, which is on its first national tour, plays in Charlotte Jan. 8-13 at Ovens Auditorium.

Alena Waters, Rashidra Scott and Patina Miller in the Broadway production of Sister Act.

Why might you like the musical even better than the movie? Three reasons:

1.

A more developed story. Deloris Van Cartier (aka Sister Mary Clarence) remains the central character. Instead of being a struggling Reno lounge singer – the movie role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg – Deloris in the musical is a young, up-and-coming singer. The story fleshes out some of the male roles, including Deloris’ boyfriend and the police officer who helps her. Also, the story is set in Philadelphia in 1978, instead of San Francisco in 1968. Goldberg, by the way, not only signed on as producer of the musical, she joined the London cast in the role of Mother Superior for part of the show’s 18-month West End run.

Mermaid (working with Slater), Beauty and Sister Act. Menken won the 2012 Tony for Best Original Score for Newsies.

3.

A set that has been described as “Studio 54 meets The Sound of Music.” Given the year, 1978, the Studio 54 reference should be no surprise. (For those born around 1990 or later, Studio 54 was a famous disco in New York.) Factoring in the majesty and beauty of the convent’s stained glass windows, the analogy works. Consider it the eye candy to go along with the ear candy!

2.

Great new music by a beloved contemporary composer. Sister Act is blessed with new original music by Alan Menken, winner of multiple Tony and Oscar awards. He and lyricist Glenn Slater drew on music references from the late ’70s, which included funk, disco, gospel, the blues, Motown and Barry White. Be prepared to want to download these tunes. Menken’s credits include Disney films such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas. He received Tony nods for the musical versions of

Did you know? Patina Miller, who originated the role of Deloris Van Cartier in London and on Broadway, is from Pageland, S.C. She attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities and then graduated from Carnegie Mellon University. She received a 2011 Tony nomination for her work in Sister Act. High-energy Traces Goes Deeper to Connect With Audiences

I

If you found Cirque Dreams Holidaze magical and loved the energy of Stomp, add Traces to your must-see list for 2013. Traces, produced by Blumenthal Performing Arts, tells the story of what seven people would choose to do if the world was about to end. The actors combine the breathtaking acrobatics of a circus with the raw energy of street performance for an explosive display of emotion and physicality. Add a soundtrack with music by Radiohead, VAST, Blackalicious and others, and you’ll have a theater experience unlike any other. Hailed as one of Time magazine’s “Top Ten of the Year” during its 2011 off-Broadway run, Traces makes a triumphal return to Charlotte May 7-19 in Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts. Thousands of local arts fans fell in love with the show in 2008 during its six weeks of performances at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square. Audiences continue to find the work by 7 Fingers, a Montreal-based company, to be thrilling, touching and haunting. Traces goes deeper in its relationship with the audience as the performers open up about their personalities, vulnerabilities and obsessions, according to a New York Times interview in 2011. One cast member’s parents are revealed to be psychologists. Another hates when the cap is left off the toothpaste. The show is “really trying to connect with the audience members as if we’re just like them,” said Bradley Henderson, one of the performers. “We’re not superheroes.” In the early days of circus, “it was all about, ‘Look how easy this is,’” said performer Florian Zumkehr in the Times interview. “We kind of show you how hard it is.” Since 2008, Traces was expanded for larger venues and has played in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and New York. The Union Square Theatre performances garnered the 2012 Off Broadway Alliance Award for Special Theater Event. In June, the troupe performed at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C.

Fela! an International Sensation “There should be dancing in the streets.” – The New York Times

Fela! – a provocative hybrid of dance, theater and music – is a triumphant tale of courage, passion and love. It is the story of legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afro-beat rhythms ignited a generation. With visionary direction and choreography from Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, Fela! features Kuti’s captivating music that mixes pounding eclectic rhythms with incendiary lyrics openly attacking the corrupt and oppressive military dictatorships that rule Nigeria and much of Africa.

“More than a musical.

An ecstatic phenomenon!” – Time Out, New York

With a team of producers that includes Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Fela! has become an international sensation that has been performed in three continents. Inspired by his mother, who was a civil rights champion, Kuti defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

popular pre-concert festival. The festival invites children to explore music through hands-on activities such as a lively drum circle, musicrelated arts and crafts, and The Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo,” which allows children to play and get exposure to many of the instruments found in the orchestra. New this season, concertgoers are encouraged to stay after the concert to attend Family Day at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. Children will learn about the art and artists of the Bechtler collection and engage their imaginations through special museum tours and hands-on art activities. Family Day takes place from noon-4:30 p.m. after each Lollipops concert. Admission is free for children and $4 for adults.

t might be cold outside, but the Charlotte Symphony’s January performances are hot, hot, hot! The Charlotte Symphony is excited to present three high-energy, can’thelp-dancing-in-the-aisles concerts at the Knight Theater. Put on your dancing shoes and join us for a Winter Dance Party; a morning and afternoon of Dancin’, Rockin’, and Hip Hoppin’ at the Lollipops Family Series; and an evening of Ballroom! at our second KnightSounds Series event of the 2012-13 season. Winter Dance Party: Tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper – Jan. 11 and 12, 2013, 8 p.m. On Feb. 3, 1959, a plane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper crashed in an Iowa cornfield. It was said to be the day the music died. The music lives on in the faithful recreation of the famous triple bill that has been called, “as flawless as a chord from a Fender Stratocaster” (Chicago Tribune). John Mueller as Buddy Holly. Come hear the classics of a musical era that still influence pop and rock artists of the present!

KnightSounds: Ballroom! – Jan. 25, 2013, 7:30 p.m. Waltz, rumba, samba and tango shine in a high-energy concert featuring dancers from Metropolitan Ballroom. Follow the dancers’ lead, wear your fancy shoes and move your fancy feet at a post-concert dance party. Launched in 2010 with the arrival of Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, the KnightSounds series contemporizes the symphony concert and breaks down real and perceived barriers between audience and orchestra. The KnightSounds series attracts both first-time concertgoers and longtime patrons for its unique mix of classical repertoire, theatrical staging, less formal atmosphere, and audience participation opportunities through activities. Join us at 6:30 p.m. for light hors d’oeuvres, catered by Dean & Deluca, in the Knight Lobby. Admission includes a one-drink ticket redeemable for wine, beer or soda.

Lollipops Dancin’, Rockin’, and Hip Hoppin’ – Jan. 12, 2013, 11 a.m. Ever heard a flute beat-box? Project Trio returns for a program featuring works by Beethoven, Rossini and Brahms, reinterpreted through the group’s eclectic musical tastes and high-energy performance style. The hour-long concert is preceded by the
